Mark Your Calendars: New Album Releases For 2009

author: UG Team date: 12/23/2008 category: features
rating: 7.2 / votes: 53

Now that Chinese Democracy - otherwise known as the most highly anticipated (or at least most hyped) album of the past few decades - has finally hit the shelves, a flurry of other bands can now be fully given the spotlight. These hard-working musicians might not have dedicated roughly 2 decades to their newest works of genius, but most have proven in the past that they only need a year or two to deliver a solid follow-up. So mark your calendars accordingly, as we’ve compiled a list of the albums you can expect to hit record stores in 2009. We apologize for those wishy-washy bands that provide the generic “summer of '09” or “late 2009/early 2010” dates, but on the other hand it certainly does keep us reading their blogs for the latest news. Clever, indeed.

While January is not a weak month by any means, things will start to get very interesting come February. Lamb of God and U2, bands at the opposite ends of the musical spectrum, will deliver two of the most highly anticipated albums of 2009. Early Spring brings the release of Mastodon’s concept album Crack the Skye, with themes involving Tsarist Russia, Rasputin, and Stephen Hawking - a guaranteed conversation piece. Killswitch Engage and Megadeth are also set for early 2009 releases, while the winter months promise the return of Iron Maiden, KoRn, and possibly Deep Purple (sadly, without Ritchie Blackmore).

Many of the artists listed have already planned tentative tours to support their new albums in 2009, so expect next year to be jam-packed with killer concerts. Dream Theater, KISS, and U2 are just a few that are already gearing up for the album/tour combo, and don’t be surprised if most of the bands mentioned below make it to your town in the upcoming months as well.

I'm looking forward to Hoobastank's For(n)ever and Rammstein (I desperately need my R+ fix), and Linkin Park is very likely to release an album in 2009, though probably would be on Q3/Q4 that year

What about Alice In Chains? They've gotten so much coverage from the UG news team but they're album isn't on this?

I also dislike not seeing Pearl Jam on it.

I'm also intrested in checking out new Anthrax, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice in Chains, Deep Purle and Slash's solo album. Hopefully Necrophagist will put out a new album next year too. And people, quit complaining because your favorite band isn't on that list. It's not like they are going to put every album coming out next year on that last.

Im excited for Alice in Chains bc i need something that is close to the old grunge of the nineties. You know Buckethead will work on something with someone. I wish I could see Primus but I don't think that will be for awhile and it would be a miracle if Tool came out with an album next year, same with Pearl Jam. Wolfmother would be here, but the band has its issues, and im sure the "break up" will hinder its sound. I hope the White Stripes work on another next year, but chances are that they are done. All they other bands I can think of atm are either history or on hiatus, so next year will be disapointing at best for me.

I am excited for DT's new album to come out. Their last one, Systematic Chaos, was good, but maybe a little too technical for my DT taste. Still though, every album of theirs has always been at the top of my lists of favorite albums and so I'm excited. And ya, what about Chickenfoot?!? That one I have been really interested in finding out about, I could've sworn that they were going to have an album out soon.

there's a handful of albums I'm looking forward to there. Dream Theater is my most anticipated followed by Megadeth with Chris Broderick. Lamb of God, Iron Maiden, Mastodon, Kreator, and Alice in Chains are also on my radar. The Slash solo album also will be interesting to hear but I'm expecting crap, it will probably reinforce my strong opinion on slash only being icing on the cake to the original GN'R while the true masterminds were Axl and Izzy. hopefully its a surprise and he pulls off a solid rock album, with people like durst and fergie on it though I'm expecting the worst thing he's done yet.

I'm looking forward to the new Green Day album. Its my taste in music and I'm 20 years old. I've been listening to them since Nimrod (1997) and will always listen to them. They were the first band I ever got into and I will buy their new album even if it sucks.

Like 'em or not, their album should DEFINATELY be on this list
