The Holiday List That Went Awry: Bands' Top-5 Favorite Albums

author: UG Team date: 12/24/2007 category: features
rating: 4.5 / votes: 46

It was going to be perfect end-of-the-year article. Ultimate Guitar would send a call out to bands everywhere, asking them what albums they deemed as the best of 2007. We could hardly wait to see what Lamb Of God or Velvet Revolver – bands at the top of their games – might consider their biggest source of competition. We eagerly anticipated a sumptuous list of titles that would get UG readers heated in debate about which responses were right on the mark and which ones were seemingly compiled by someone under the influence.

Of course, we forgot to take reality into account. Between the fact that it usually takes time/effort to compile a list of favorite albums and that age-old issue of miscommunication, our coveted list turned out to be an odd, disjointed one. It wasn’t a complete bust, but we never did hear from Slash or Mark Morton. We did, however, get some intriguing and unexpected lists, which made for interesting, wacky reads in their own right.

If you ever played the game as a child, then you might remember how skewed the original information became as it traveled from one kid to the next. It’s frightening how similar our holiday project began to look like a game of Telephone. Our original intent was to gather up the top-5 albums of 2007, but somewhere along the line we began to receive lists that featured albums and songs all the way back to The Beatles.

So in the end, we can admit this was an experiment that went awry. It has made us appreciate the UG readers all the more for responding to our various polls with answers that are actually related to the initial question. Even so, we still want to extend a warm thanks to all the bands that did take the time to jot down their favorite albums – even the ones from 1969.

Tom Gabel of Against Me!

(in no specific order)

05. Rumble Strips – Girls And Weather

04. Klaxons – Myths Of The Near Future

03. The Good, The Bad & The Queen – Self-titled

02. Moneybrother – Mount Pleasure

01. The National - Boxer

Faber Drive

05. Avril Lavigne – The Best Damn Thing

04. Daughtry – Self-titled

03. Boys Like Girls – Self-titled

02. Nickelback - All The Right Reasons (We don’t care that it was released in 2005)

01. Faber Drive – Seven Second Surgery (Just kidding)

Joey Eppard of 3

05. Amber Leigh – Reckless (Someone in our band has had a crush on Amber for 7 years or so... I'm not naming names or anything...)

04. Radiohead - In Rainbows (Well, it’s Radiohead, ya know?)

03. The Dear Hunter - Act II: The Meaning Of, And All Things Regarding Ms. Leading (Somehow these guys have managed to merge evolved emo sensibility with ragtime. Eclectic and original but also very melodic.)

02. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (Just as good live as on record, PT proved that thoughtful and progressive rock is alive and well in 2007.)

01. Kiss Kiss - Reality vs. the Optimist (This band is more than just a breath of fresh air. These guys are making some of our favorite music these days. They are progressive but even more melodic. The songs are full of surprises and the compositions are absolutely brilliant. Every song is precious.)

Jamie van Dyck of Bushwhack

05. Hurt - Volume II (I finally just heard this album for the first time a few weeks ago. Vol. II is a giant step above its predecessor. The songs are ambitious and inspiring, yet these experiments within the fairly unexperimental genre of post-grunge rock are maturely controlled. From bluegrass flourishes to full-fledged orchestral arrangements, the album encompasses a range of moods and emotions, and it has enough memorable songs to shake things up a bit in the current rock world.)

04. Sevendust - Alpha (Ten years after their self-titled album was released, these guys are still kicking ass. Songs like "Driven," "Beg To Differ," and "Confessions Of Hatred" show that these guys are still hard rock riff-writing machines. In their most aggressive moments, Sevendust are heavier than any metal band could ever dream of being. “Under" may have their best chorus since "Trust" from their 2001 album “Animosity." And Lajon still has my favorite voice in rock music. This is yet another strong record from the hardest-working band on the planet.)

03. Karnivool - Themata (While labelmates Nonpoint and Skindred also released albums this year [Skindred's Roots Rock Riot would have been my #6 for the year], I have to give my nod to these boys from down under. Technically this was released in 2005, but it wasn't released in America until '07. The musicianship and composition on this album are first-rate: great melodies, interesting chords [the guitar players both tune their guitars B-F#-B-G-B-E, making the bottom 3 strings like a Drop B tuning and the top 3 strings just like standard], and complex rhythms.)

02. Fair To Midland - Fables From A Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True (These guys win the rookie of the year award as far as I'm concerned. Serj Tankian of System of a Down would agree has they are now thriving on his Serjical Strike label. Their lead single “Dance Of the Manatee" made quite a splash on rock radio this year, but the entire record continues at that level. A reviewer on All Music Guide coined the term "Prog-Core" to describe these guys, which seems just about right to me. The guitars are mostly just power chords and octaves, but he always chooses the right ones. His playing is also made far more creative by the fact that he can play power chords and octaves at the same time by using the tuning C-G-C-G-C-C. Every song is catchy as hell, and the keys add the epic touch to make this record my 2nd favorite album to come out this year.)

01. Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet (This is my favorite album to come out not only in the last year, but rather, in the last 5 years, since two albums before this, Steven Wilson and co. released In Absentia, my favorite album of all time. On Fear of a Blank Planet, Wilson confronts relevant issues of the world we live in today as straightforwardly and directly as possible, without coming across as preachy or pretentious. FOABP is the imperative listen of 2007 for almost anyone who is a fan of music, let alone prog-rock/prog-metal. Gavin Harrison may be the best drummer in rock today that few know about. The 17-minute plus "Anesthethize" would even leave bands like Tool, Dream Theater, and The Mars Volta in awe. Steven Wilson as a guitar player is simultaneously tasteful and virtuosic in a manner that only David Gilmour could compare. Each of the six songs on this album stands out as a classic in its own right, and yet none of them sound all that alike.)

Steve Blaze of Lillian Axe

05. Avenged SevenfoldAvenged Sevenfold (These guys are my favorite newer band; great live also.)

04. My Chemical RomanceThe Black Parade (This band has really evolved. Great dynamics. Great vocals.)

03. ChevelleVena Sera (Loud and powerful mixes)

02. H.I.MVenus Doom (Melodic Goth, my fave)

01. MuseBlack Holes and Revelations (My favorite band – these guys are amazing on all levels, especially the songwriting)

Stella Mozgawa of MINK

05. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Is Is (Great little EP that's enough to satisfy me till the next LP. "Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow" sounds like an evil art-school jam; I love the visceral quality of the recording.)

04. Regurgitator - Love and Paranoia (Legendary Australian band and my good friends from back home released this album welcoming a new addition to the band, a synth slayer named Seja. Check out the track "Romance of the Damned".)

03. BjorkVolta (Speaking of which… Bjork is hands down my favorite contemporary artist and this album was a welcome return to her heavier, electro-esque roots. Didn't hurt having Timbaland co-producing a few of the tracks, too. Yum.)

02. M.I.AKala (I fell in love with the "Boyz" single instantly and the album is equally as fresh and impressive. I have a feeling M.I.A is going to be the next Bjork.)

01. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (Kind of reminds me of Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.” Incredible guitar sounds and probably the most accessible album that Wilco has released to date. This one grew on me like a fungus…)

Tony Giglio (director of the film Timber Falls)

05. Bloc PartyA Weekend In The City (Great follow-up to Silent Alarm)

04. Peter Bjorn & JohnWriter’s Block (Easy, casual, cool)

03. RadioheadIn Rainbows (They're the best band in the last 20 years)

02. Arcade FireNeon Bible (Not a secret anymore)

01. EditorsAn End Has A Start (Great, consistent rock. Best live band of 2007)

Jack Frost

05. WingerPull (I know it’s old but still one of my favorite records every year. I could die with this record.)

04. Bo BiceSee The Light (I know another American Idol. His new record is Southern to the max. I just can’t say enough how great this is. If you’re a fan of Kenny Wayne or Molly Hatchet, you’ll eat this up.)

03. Richie KotzenGo Faster (It’s great to hear him back to the blues and soul he kills on. His voice is everything Lenny Kravitz and Prince lost in the past. He should be on the cover of every guitar mag in the world.)

02. Symphony XParadise Lost (The new record just crushes. It’s their most amazing record to date. They are the kings of prog. Case closed.)

01. DaughtrySelf-titled (I love this CD, as the songs are true and groundbreaking. I think it’s a real songwriter’s dream.)

Editor’s Note: The next few bands opted to list their all-time favorites.

Bigelf

05. The MoveMessage From The Country (This band has to be one of the most underrated in history. Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne are complete geniuses; nobody is on their level.

It's as if The Beatles continued into the 70's…well, Jeff did end up producing the last Beatles project in the end, so there. Heavy pop at it's absolute finest!)

04. Black SabbathSelf-titled (When I was seven I used to put on Black Sabbath to scare my best friend. "Oh no, no…please god help me!" I was a little scared too, actually. The birth of Metal.)

03. The BeatlesAbbey Road (I'll never forget this…I was at Shawn Cassidy's house [yes, Da Doo Ron Ron - don't ask] listening to the second side of Abbey Road for the first time. It blew me away, definitely a desert island record for me, one of the best in music history as well.)

02. King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King (When I first heard this album I felt like I'd never heard music before. Crimson pretty much invented "prog rock" with this release and consequently left everyone else trying to emulate it. I don't think there has been a record since that makes you shit your pants, well maybe the Eddie Murphy/Michael Jackson duet "What's Up With You?")

01. The Pretty ThingsS. F. Sorrow (In the Summer of Love, three records were recorded at Abbey Road...Sgt Pepper, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and the unknown masterpiece S.F. Sorrow. If you look up psychedelic in a dictionary it should say…"see S.F. Sorrow". It was also the first rock opera, preceding "Tommy" by a year. Experimental, sparse, ominous, bleak yet still whimsical and epic. This is a magical record for me; it will never grow old in my mind.)

Ryan Key of Yellowcard

05. Elliot Smith – XO

04. Green Day - Nimrod

03. Third Eye Blind – Self-titled

02. Weezer - Pinkerton

01. Foo Fighters – The Colour And The Shape

Chris Brown of Trapt

05. DredgLeitmotif (These guys went to our high school and we saw them countless times during high school. They did all the things we wanted to be doing. Their sound during high school was more like Korn and the whole Nu-metal sound. The first time we heard the music on this CD was live. They created a certain mood with their music that was not like anything else people were doing. It just made us want to push ourselves even more.)

04. ToolAenima (This CD was way above our playing abilities at the time, but still had a big influence on us. It was a very progressive album that had great lyrics and songs. It made us want to push ourselves.)

03. DeftonesAdrenaline (These guys were fairly local and were another great band live. They had a mix between heavy and melodic which had a big influence in us because that was the sound we were going for. Everyone loved the Deftones at the time and they have influenced so many bands.)

02. IncubusS.C.I.E.N.C.E. (This CD had a big influence on our sound. It was a progressive record that had a bunch of crazy parts and great playing on the whole record. We saw these guys a bunch of times in clubs on this record. This CD made us want to practice.)

01. KornSelf-titled (This album had an influence on us for many reasons. It's the reason I bought a 5 string bass and Simon bought a 7-string guitar. We loved the heavy sound of the record and enjoyed the fact that it had melody and groove as well.)

Josh Todd of Buckcherry

05. The CultElectric (Fantastic rock record, up there with Back in Black and Appetite For Destruction. Ian is a big influence of mine; I love his voice, his commanding confidence live, and the way the overall record makes me feel. Great songs from beginning to end and Billy's guitar work is sick.)

04. PrincePurple Rain (There are so many great Prince records but this one is a must have. It captures every human emotion and you can dance, rock and fuck to it. Prince is the best live performer I've ever seen. You better ask someone.)

03. YazUpstairs at Eric's (I love records that you can listen to from beginning to end great songs and who can resist Allison's soulful voice.)

02. AC/DCBack in Black (This record still sells 10,000 units a week because it's arguably the best rock record ever made…Hands down the best rock band ever and this record was the theme to my high school years most of which I can't remember.)

01. Minor ThreatOut of Step (I got this record in my teens and the lyrics really made me feel like these guys knew what was going on inside of me. The live show was even better. This record is timeless.)

Wow.... these lists are terrible. I dont know who most of these people are and what they think they are rating, but it doesnt seem to me like they have any say in innovative albums. When I saw velvet revolver and lamb of god I thought this article may have had some potential in ratings.

I was wrong. I think that ratings from more guitar-developed bands than buckcherry, trapt, or yellowcard would have been much more useful. Talk to Tommy from BTBAM, Anders from in flames, or maybe someone from A7X. Then we might get some interesting choices.

A Warm Place :
For those of you complaining so much about this list, first of all, keep in mind that no "favorites" list is going to be perfect. Second, I've noticed that a lot of you who are complaining are only listing metal bands as your favorite albums. Maybe the problem isn't with the list, but with your musical tastes. There is good music out there other than metal. I'm not saying I don't like metal; in fact, I love it. But I like music other than just hard rock or metal. Hmmm.....interesting. Not any of what I expcted, other than The Black Parade being on someones list. Mine would go like this (all time)-
1.Placebo - Once More with Feeling. Has every good song by them on it. Even tho its a greatest hits, id say only Meds would stand up to it.
2. Mastodon - Blood Mountain. Awesome album. Something very different than the stereotypical metal album. Tons of harmonies, guitar and vocal, no super-deep screaming for the most part, some actual singing as well, and the best drum tracks i have ever heard. ever. Definately one of the best.
3. Coheed and Cambria - IKSSE:3. Some super-awesome songs. Has 3 songs over seven minutes long. One of the best and longest songs i have ever heard, The Light and the Glass, is just the best way to end the album. Has alot of different moods and sounds on it, from raging serial killer to upbeat, fast, fun-ish song.
4. Nine Black Alps - Everything is. Awesome album, very nice songs. Some say it might signal the return of Grunge, but i doubt it. A very good band, even tho their newer stuff is softer.
5. Paramore - All We Know is Falling. I like this CD, and i think its better than Riot. Great songs, much more raw and much better written than Riot, even for someone as young as Haylie.

The article says of 2007 buddy. Just for fun..... I'll make a list.

1. Colors- BTBAM (no contest)
2. Storm the Gates of Hell- Demon Hunter
3. Threads of Life- Shadows Fall
4. Rise of the Tyrant- Arch Enemy
5. The Alchemy Index- Thrice

There..... I allowed some variety. Its not all gay punk/emo shit or just extreme metal. Theres some alternative, hardcore, metalcoreish stuff, death metal, and hard rock in there, heavy but soft at times. Im sure no one agrees entirely (maybe not at all), but at least i have broadened the list a bit for more than one ****ing genre.

I can agree with this guy. I like the disturbed, SlipknoT, shinedown, and seether. im amazed at the fact that nobody on these lists mentioned "The Unthinking Majority" by Serj Tankian. However, "Venus Doom" by HIM, not my favorite album, but they ARE my favorite band. my 5 would be:

1. "The Unthinking Majority" - Serj Tankian
2. "Darklight" - HIM
3. "Vol. 3 Subliminal Verses" - SlipknoT
4. "Stabbing the Drama" - Soilwork
5. tie between "One-X" - Three Days Grace and "The Way of the Fist" - Five Finger Death Punch

and another thing.....Avril Lavigne?

The Light and the Glass is probably one of the best songs ever written, especially the "Your father's dead he passed in his sleep" part and on after.

Those lists were pretty terrible. I think UG would have been better off just getting ten random people off the street and asking them their top 5.

Come on guys, its interesting to see what famous band members listen to! Even if its sh*t or not, its pretty interesting!

For example, Adam D from Killswitch Engage likes to listen to The Killers! How f*cked up is that!?

Minor Threat , wish they were still around in 2007. That guys gotta be pretty thick to list an album like that on the best of '07, especially @ #1

Nice to see Wilco and Arcade Fire up there, rather than just another death-metal album.

my 5 favorites of '07 are

Sky Blue Sky - Wilco
Yours to Keep - Albert Hammond Jr
Costello Music - The Fratellis
Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys
&
Octopus - A Band of Bees

To see Avril Lavigne at the top of someone's list is a bit much. It's hard to respect someone's opinion when their taste is that typical.
