The UG Readers' Poll: The Best And Worst Bands Of 2008

For anyone out there who has a burning desire to one day be an adored rock star, we’ve got some sage advice for you. Study and scrutinize every move made by Fall Out Boy – then do the opposite. It might sound harsh, but the UG community has once again declared Pete Wentz and the gang the Worst Band of 2008 in our annual poll. Taking into consideration Fall Out Boy's position on last year’s survey (Hint: You hated them 12 months ago, too), we thought that the radio-friendly emo band might get a little break from being loathed. After all, their new album had not even been released at the time we tallied the latest survey’s results. But I suppose spending a little too much time on MTV and playing papa to Ashley Simpson's new baby still pushed the readers over the edge. Hey, we can’t help it if the UG community’s taste is so consistent that even those irksome Jonas Brothers aren’t able to displace Fall Out Boy from that of the most-hated band.

While it was a fairly one-sided year for Fall Out Boy, Metallica picked up where Avenged Sevenfold left off. You might recall in 2007 that there was obviously a love/hate relationship occurring with Avenged Sevenfold, with the Huntington Beach natives earning both the #1 Best Band and #3 Worst Band positions. While their entertaining new live CD/DVD Live in the LBC & Diamonds In The Rough has helped them nab the #3 slot among the Best Bands, Metallica's long-awaited Death Magnetic drew a decidedly mixed response from the public. But as a wise individual once said, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

We want to thank everyone in the UG community who participated in our annual Best/Worst poll – even those who tried to slip in more than one vote for each category. While we appreciate that you really, really hate or love a particular band, the rules force us to count only one vote per person. That will explain why the multiple votes you posted for "Your Mom" didn’t show up among the Worst. So without further ado, we present to you the bands that shaped (for better or worse) the year of 2008.

The Worst

01. Fall Out Boy (429 votes)

Forget the fact that Fall Out Boy had very little presence in 2008 until this month’s release of Folie A Deux. The quartet’s very existence is disconcerting enough to earn the #1 Worst Band…again.

Most of the news relating to Fall Out Boy this year was usually associated with the band’s figurehead, Pete Wentz, who apparently pissed off a lot of you by procreating. Or perhaps it was Wentz’s new gig hosting the MTV show FNMTV, which often focused its attention on artists that already have ample attention (i.e. Snoop Dogg). It should be noted that UG users’ comments have been a lot less scathing on FOB-related news stories lately, and that might be an indication that Wentz and the boys might just win you all over in a few years – or at least fall to the #2 Worst Band. Dare to dream.

02. Metallica (425 votes)

Although Death Magnetic received generally positive reviews, there are some who still feel that Metallica's first studio album in 5 years is a far cry from the Master Of Puppets days.

The legendary metal band has seemed to lighten up quite a bit since the whole Napster debacle, but it may take more than a few songs on Rock Band/Guitar Hero and a sub-par mastering job on Death Magnetic to win a lot of the hardcore fans over again.

03. Jonas Brothers (422 votes)

It makes little difference that the Jonas Brothers have received little to no coverage on Ultimate-Guitar.

You just need to visit your local Walmart, Toys R’ Us, or magazine rack (Lord have mercy, they were on the cover of Rolling Stone) to see that this is one band where the marketing has overtaken the music.

04. Coldplay (331 votes)

While there are plenty of "alternative" radio stations and magazine publications hailing Coldplay's latest album Viva La Vida as one of the best offerings of 2008, the UG community didn’t quite agree.

Churning out another huge helping of low-key soft rock that is often mistaken for something much heavier or artistically daring, Coldplay didn’t make many new fans at UG this year. And the cherry on top? Chris Martin transformed into a misanthropic diva on the BBC Radio 4 program after being probed about his songs’ meanings. Wow, imagine being famous and having people interested in the music you create. Must be rough, Chris.

05. Tokio Hotel (329 votes)

For those living in the United States, the force of nature that is Tokio Hotel hasn’t perhaps been fully understood. But you only need visit Sweden or Italy to witness the Backstreet Boys-meets-glam-rock hysteria existing among the kids overseas these days. It seems those of you who are extremely familiar with the Tokio Hotel rage are pretty damn disgusted.

Whether it’s because of vocalist Bill Kaulitz’s cartoonishly punk hairdo (which seems to not fit his musical style in any manner) or just the fact that screaming teen girls do tend to make up a good chunk of the band’s core fan base, there are quite a few reasons that might push Tokio Hotel to the #1 slot in a few years’ time.

The Best

01. Metallica (1087 votes)

This was no close call. Metallica might have popped up on the Worst Bands of 2008 list as well, but the number of people extolling the virtues of the legendary metal outfit far exceeded the naysayers.

And what could possibly make it even sweeter? Metallica won by a landslide, with 5 times as many votes as the 2nd runner up. It’s a huge victory for a band that only a few years back was becoming a frequent butt of jokes, thanks in part to the band alienating a new generation of downloading fans. But the past is the past, and Death Magnetic is a sign that even in their mid-40s the guys in Metallica are still in their prime.

02. Slipknot (277 votes)

Changing up the formula is not always a wise idea for a band already at the top of its game, but Slipknot has seemingly come back stronger after a little change of pace. Along with opting to record the latest album All Hope Is Gone in their hometown of Iowa, Slipknot also incorporated each member in the songwriting process – a first for the masked musicians. Critically acclaimed and praised as their heaviest offering yet (particularly in the layered percussion work), All Hope Is Gone proves there is plenty of substance behind the elaborate costumes.

03. Avenged Sevenfold (264 votes)

Avenged Sevenfold might have slipped a few notches from last year’s #1 title, but it still holds the prestigious honor of no longer being considered among the worst of the worst.

The release of last year’s self-titled album was met with a flurry of both praise and pans, but a solid work ethic on the road and the entertaining new live CD/DVD Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough has won the majority over.

04. Trivium (221 votes)

The comparison to Metallica has always haunted Trivium, but 2006’s The Crusade pushed a lot of fans over the edge. Frontman Matt Heafy’s vocal style morphed into a carbon copy of James Hetfield’s, and all the screaming heard on the first few releases was a distant memory. But don’t ever accuse Trivium of being a band that doesn’t heed fans’ advice. The new album Shogun not only features the return of Heafy’s grittier vocals, it also combines the best parts of Trivium’s previous releases. Between the technical efficiency and the solid melodies, Shogun ranks up there with the best albums of 2008.

05. AC/DC (213 votes)

If there is one great unifier in rock, Angus Young is thy name. Don’t believe me? Young’s riffs have the amazing ability to be appreciated anywhere from your standard rock concert to a high school mixer to a wedding – and the list goes on and on. There’s just something incredibly relatable about an AC/DC tune, and that’s a valuable trait to have.

After an 8-year break AC/DC has given the public Black Ice, and it’s full of reliable yet gritty rock tunes. The band knows not to mess with the formula, and while there are a few slight twists along the way, Black Ice stays true to the AC/DC that we’ve loved since the days of Bon Scott.

The only truely good bands on either list are muse and opeth. The others are iffy. Metallica made slight amends with Death magnetic, but not enough to garner a best. Axl's Gun's album was ok, but nothing special. Something I'd bargin bin buy. Slipknot hasn't made a truely tolerable album in forever, and Bodom's new album was ok but again, nothing special

Umm i was unawrae this was even going on and am sadly disappointed by all of it, first off i don't think metallica deserves number 2 worst, they arent that bad, second they definitely dont deserve number 1 best they didnt come back well enough at all =/

Metallica's on both. And the fact that 8/10 bands on the Best of list are hard rock or metal bands shows something about the users on here. Im surprised BFMV isnt on the best list. And the fact that all the bands on the Worst of hits have all easily had Top 40 hits this year. Coldplay is easily one of the best bands this year, even if Viva La Vida wasnt their best effort. And tbh, FOB and My Chemical Romance have done very little this year to offend of bring hatred. If you want bad "bands", try out Brokencyde or 1-800 Zombie. Trivium definetly deserves to be on this list, Shogun was an absolutly amazing album. Metallica deserves to be number one by coming back with Death Magnetic, but why are they on the worst list also at #2?? WTF??Obviously there never going to make an album as good as ride the lightning or master of puppets again, its impossible. No band should be expected to top a classic album like that.

Slipknot definetly didn't deserve to be #2 on the best, all hope is gone was really mediocre. They already have. That "plateau" is only determined by metal heads and hard rockers who frequent sites like UG. personally i was quite pleased that A7X and Slipknot got on there, because they do have some great stuff; sure the solos of Avenged barely have any differential, but who cares? it never specified that the best bands have to be unique with each song, they just wanted to see who like the sound of it, and the sound of A7X gives results. i get goosebumps in some of their songs.

props for those two bands being up, the rest though (aside from AC/DC) could be changed for the best.

I just feel lost when I look at lists like this. You have seventies bands like AC/DC (who I ocassionally enjoy and grew up listening to) actually able to compete with modern bands. It shows how big of a gap there really is for a band to come out of the blue at any moment now and blow everyone's mind, because right now the only minds being blown are the ones looking at lists like this and wondering where music is heading.

Pop Rock can be a decent genre when it's done right, Fall Out Boy is one of my favorite bands in the genre. Hannah Montana should be on the list, I agree with you there. Also, I care about MCR and FOB, I like them both to an extent. I prefer metal but I don't limit myself to it.

Dude Hannah Montana doesn't count cause nobody cares about her. However, i feel that the worst list was actually very accurate. I am a huge fan of Avenged Sevenfold, love them to death but i think they deserved to be a little lower on the Best List. Slipknot belongs on the worst of only, by comparison only.

I think the number one on the best list she trade sides with Guns n' Roses, even if they are low on the best list their release was better than anyones this year... The only problem I've got with this is you throwing Metallica in with those other bands. Metallica are the ****ing godfathers of thrash metal, and one of the most significant metal bands of all time. All the other bands you mentioned are relatively new bands that were influenced by Metallica (except for Slipknot, the only one of those bands I actually really like). I know Metallica might not seem as original now, but in the 80s they created a whole new style of music. Just because they're one of the few metal bands that has had lots of mainstream success doesn't take away from the fact that they created a genre of music.

To whoever tried to say Metallica and Trivium are emo: seriously? look at the top of the worst list.

i'm pretty well happy with this list, metallica and trivum both put out very good albums, i'm a big a7x fan and its hard not to love AC/DC even tho they gave us nothing different. i haven't heard any of slipknots new album, but i might just check it out now.

They definitely don't deserve to be on the worst list because there many many worse bands, but to give them the #1 spot is atrocious. Death Magnetic is not a comeback. TRACED IN AIR is a comeback. Better yet, where the hell was Ayreon? 01011001 was literally one of the greatest listening experiences I've ever had and I have nothing but respect for everyone involved in the making of that album. Some of their material does sound the same but no one can honestly say that something like Powerage or The Razors Edge or Stiff Upper Lip or their new one sounds anything alike. People go buy the AC/DC stuff that's played on the radio. A lot of their deep album tracks are actually great, well arranged songs.

I became very very very upset when I saw Metallica was voted the 2nd worst band this year...and then it all went away when I saw how much they won best band by.

The UG community voted on it, which means, you people who are complaining about it, had the chance to freaking change it. Don't complain if you didn't vote. And see two sides of a story. Don't come on and be like "WTF?! METALLICA IS THE NUMBER TWO WORST?!" Seriously, listen to what people are saying about the album. Read the reviews that people post on here and most of all, listen to the MUSIC. The music speaks for the artist, so frankly, if the music's bad, then it should be rated low.
Even as a huge Metallica fan, I think that "Number 1" is not the spot for Metallica. Their comeback was good, but it wasn't great. There's a lot of room for improvement in the drum dept, the solo dept, and lastly the vocal dept.
And I don't see how Fall Out Boy is the worst. At least they write music. Albeit, music that appeals to the masses but it's still MUSIC. I mean, if you really want to put anyone down, put down Miley Cyrus or those guys on the freecreditreport.com commercials. It's all about MARKETING people.

... These lists aren't very good. I don't really have a big problem with Fall Out Boy - their first album was very good, and each album to follow has had at least a few good songs.

My Chemical Romance is one of my favorite bands... I don't really see why people hate them so much. They aren't sell outs, and the last album they put out was totally out of the box and one of the best albums I've ever purchased.

The Best - I don't really get the thought process behind that list... Avenged Sevenfold is the only worthy band on their to me, and I can almost understand Bullet For My Valentine. But where are the bands like Rise Against? Appeal to Reason was a smashing album, and probably one of the best I've ever heard.

I personally didnt like blooddrunk as much as their other cds. It had like 2 songs that I actually liked and the rest were just ok. And Coldplay didnt steal shit, the songs dont even sound the same.

wow, avenged sevenfold. It's chilling to think their are still people who don't realize that they suck balls. Even more appalling that people enjoy trivium. New Offspring is just awful nowadays, and although bullet for my valentine can actually be pretty surprising musically, no amount of decent music can detract from that mans awful voice and lyrics. Dragonforce is more of a novelty than Dethklok. Ac/Dc is irrelevant and their songs sound exactly the same, and always have. Children of Bodom is okay until you hear more than 3 songs, then you just want to punch them.

On a lighter note, Congrats to Opeth and Muse.

Avenged Sevenfold is okay, definitely not worth the top 10 best bands though. not even the top 100. I didnt even think muse did anything this year. And Children of Bodom is just making me tired. they have a couple of good songs, but for the most part they just plain bore me. they are the pop music of metal. The offspring have little or no creativity. all of their songs sound very similar. Bullet for my Valentine doesnt bother me all that much, but they sont deserve this list.

I agreee. Whats so wrong with an over the top theatrical record (the black parade cd? The Beatles Sgt. Peppers was HUGE and still is today, and its was really theatrical. i'd like to say first off, that i'm a listener who is fairly mainstream, but not nessacarily pop. that being said: this article severly flawed. not because of the bands so much, but slipknot and metallica are on both lists.
so starting out, you know it can't be that great. i like most of the artists here, not a die hard fan, but like some of the stuff. mostly ac/dc and tallica. i will say that even as a small fan, ac/dc is pretty repetitve. and as far as tallica's "comeback" goes, the album was pretty good, but a comeback? no. i like about 4 songs from fob, but even though they're kinda sucky, jobros are far worse. why? simply because their rise in popularity shows how much the music industry is based on sales, not music. i haven't listen to... well, any of their songs extensively, and i bet some bashers havent heard of them at all, but their reputation of being bad(amoung straight males over the age of 5) definately follows them. but they are bad, so its alright. as far as ug being biased towards metal, it very well could be. however, this site is ultimate guitar. not ultimate METAL guitar, not ultimate EMO guitar, just ULTIMATE GUITAR. so there is no excuse why other representations can't be here. the bottom line is, having the jobros anything but worst is a disgrace. jobros are ruining music and everyone from morbid angel to every douche bag named joe satriani should feel embarresed to be in a buisness where the jonas bros are taken as serious artists.
