The Ultimate Guitar Christmas Wish List: Don't Let Us Down This Time, Santa

author: UG Team date: 12/23/2006 category: features
rating: 9.4 / votes: 60

Dear Santa,

I realize that I’ve been somewhat naughty for your taste this past year, and I’ll apologize off the bat. Please note, however, that anger gets the best of me when my friends start to debate me on whether Dragonforce’s Herman Li playing lacks emotion. Come on, now. I mean, it’s Herman Li. So with that behind me, I hope I’m not overstepping my boundaries by creating a Christmas Wish List for you. I know you’re up to the task, particularly when you look at the numerous wishes you fulfilled for me last year: a resurgence of the guitar solo, new albums from Tool and Black Label Society, and the rebirth of Alice In Chains. On the last item I probably should have specified the Layne Staley’s era of Alice In Chains, but hey, I won’t be greedy.

There were so many highs and lows in 2006 that I felt it necessary to enlist the help of the Ultimate Guitar readers in compiling a thorough list of requests, which I think you’ll find completely valid. I’ve got to tell you, Santa, the UG readers provided so many Christmas wishes (thousands, in fact) that I was only able to include a very small portion on my list. I think you’ll see that the wishes inspired by readers are pretty much essential for making 2007 a memorable one. Oh, and there’s one reader out there who personally wished for his manhood to come to life and provide psychological advice to him. Yeah, he’ll need to speak with you directly.

So here’s hoping that you’ll be able to fulfill at least a few of these requests. It’s for the good of the music world, Santa. This Christmas I wish…

  • That System Of A Down only fooled us all by saying the band was on hiatus and actually will be releasing an album come early Spring. That moment onstage when Daron Malakian changed the lyrics to what seemed like a mean-spirited shot at Serj Tankian? Please let it be only a ploy to gain attention for SOAD’s soon-to-be-released next album. I believe the love in that band is still there. I believe, Santa.

  • Metallica’s next record will feature lots of classic Kirk Hammett solos, recalling the days of Kill ‘Em All and Master Of Puppets. The band then goes on to proclaim that the entire album will be featured on the next edition of Guitar Hero and any free downloading site. That comes straight from Lars’ mouth.

  • On that same note, if Metallica cannot fulfill this wish, it will be a necessity that Dave Mustaine and Megadeth take over Metallica’s place in history. Mustaine has said in plenty of interviews that he’s felt like he’s lived in Metallica’s shadow, so let’s be fair.

  • Axl Rose reunites with Slash and the rest of the “realGuns N’ Roses, or at least completes his decade-long journey in recording Chinese Democracy. The readers are growing restless and forming a lynch party. Seriously, it’s disturbing the kind of violent thoughts that Axl is provoking. Let’s just say black holes and diseases were mentioned.

  • For Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and AC/DC to come out with albums that have such astounding combined power that they have the ability to wipe the word “emo” forever out of our memory banks.

  • For Santa to explain the secret to Keith Richard’s longevity, which is perhaps the greatest mystery known to man. I thought for sure that incident with the coconut tree would have the angels calling him home.

  • For the resurrection of Kurt Cobain, Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhoads, and Jimi Hendrix. ‘Nuff said.

  • Tom DeLonge, Travis Barker, and Mark Hoppus discover there is a decided lack of humor in their present-day lives. The only logical option is to reunite blink-182. For every foul name that one of them called the other in various magazine interviews, the band members will have to make up for with hugs, lots of hugs.

  • In an amazing act of courage, guitarist James Iha decides to join Billy Corgan in recording the new Smashing Pumpkins CD. The event is so touching that it inspires Slash and Axl to write an entire album’s worth of material, which they eventually call Slash and Axl: BFF.

  • For Herman Li to play even faster. It will be necessary in order to fulfill the shredding battle that has been foretold: Yngwie Malmsteen versus Herman Li.

  • That Rage Against The Machine reunites. But Santa, let’s not stop there. Invite Chris Cornell to participate, thereby resulting in the greatest Rage songs known to man.

  • Pink Floyd reunites for a Syd Barrett tribute show. And the co-headliner? Led Zeppelin, of course.

  • For Fall Out Boy to be quiet. They’re hurting many of the readers’ ears.

  • That you could decide which is a better fate for Green Day - for the band to continue making records 20 years from now or for it to be banished off the face of the earth. It’s pretty much a tie for readers, so St. Nick needs to make a judgment call.

  • That Zakk Wylde’s essence is bottled so that guitar players everywhere will be able to play a solo with the necessary testosterone-driven manliness. Let us know if a long beard will be required to gain as well – that might be the source of Zakk’s power.

  • For us all to have one concert experience this year that changes the course of our lives for the better. If that concert happens to be Pink Floyd or Zeppelin, I won’t protest.

The last wish was probably the most popular request, yet it could very well be the toughest to accommodate. Apparently bands are just not hitting all the cities that they need to be. If you could work that magic of yours and send the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Children Of Bodom to Pittsburgh, Tenacious D to San Francisco, and pretty much every band in existence to Iceland, that would be great. Oh, and new guitars for everyone!

That should pretty much do it, Santa. You’re a reasonable man and I know that you want UG readers everywhere to be happy. So word to the wise: Start with the new guitars.

In an amazing act of courage, guitarist James Iha decides to join Billy Corgan in recording the new Smashing Pumpkins CD. The event is so touching that it inspires Slash and Axl to write an entire album’s worth of material, which they eventually call Slash and Axl: BFF.

    brilliant, brilliant list.

though a few amendments that would make it perfect in my mind.

SRV also comes back to life. and then he joins the wiping out of emos by garotting all he can find with his unbelivably thick strings.

Cliff Burton also, and he shows the world that a bass can be used for something more than root notes.

Layne Staley also, and again fronts AiC. though in recognition for his services, William DuVall is given a pacific island.

Axl Rose hit by the VR tour bus after stumbling out a venue after fleeing the stage when he broke a toenail.

VH stop screwing around, and bring back Diamond Dave. again, they prove to the world the importance of synth pop.

hmmmmm, there's more but i won't be greedy.

    merry christmas.

And be immortalized (along with me) so they could make classic albums for ever. And Rick Rubin producing the shit. Oh yeah, and for me you can get rid of Green Day. They'll never be good again. Herman Li versus Yngwie Malmsteen ? That'd be...interesting. Power metal versus neo-classical. That'd sound terrible. Lol. Nothing against them, as I respect them both as guitarists. But, the victor going against Petrucci isn't really necessary. Petrucci's insanely fast, no doubt, and I'm a huge fan of his, but Yngwie is still faster. So, winner should go against Michael Angelo Batio or...that other guy that I can't seem to remember. Frusciante ? Or...something...like that.

I agree with the resurrection of Randy and Dimebag, and definitely with the resurrection of Cliff, that someone else mentioned. Cliff was inspiring -- find a video of him playing For Whom the Bell Tolls at the Day out on the Green (or something like that) gig; it's simply amazing.

And yes, new axes for all ! Santa, I'd like the Rust Razorback tribute guitar notably used by Trivium's Matt Heafy in honor of Dimebag Darrel; if not possible, I'll settle for a Randy Rhoads model.

wat we need is a high priest to perform a resurrection n SRV, jimi, randy, dimebag, and kurt, and john bonham. we then use this high priest to make robert plant and the others of led zeppelin younger (u kno to hit those high notes like in the old days). we then pay led zep to do a reunion Universal tour, and all 6.sumhing billion ppl on earth will flood the arenas and create world peace.

Sorry for double post but i would rather have the Axxion, as well as a beard as Zakk Wyldes, or even hair like theirs. Cant wait till spring for SOAD to come back, and then Pink Floyd to do a concert here.
The one thing i want the most is for more GOOD or GREAT bands to do concerts in, wait for it,,,,,

    - 20 more years for green day.

    - brutal unavoidable car accident that kills all members of fall out boy, panic! at the disco, and my chemical romance.

    - an album from tool thats better than the piece of horse-shit 10,000 days was.

    - someone from a major record label to sign my band.

    thank u santa.
