Introduction:
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower. The first of serveral Hendrix tracks to be feature in Weekend Riff, All Along the Watchtower is one of the best cover versions ever re-written. Hendrix was an expert at taking a simple chord progression and improvising within them to create an awesome sound that has supposedly never been re-produced to quite the same level.
Techniques:
The song opens with a chordal intro that moves into a lead lick high up the neck. Slide with your third finger then hit the twelth fret with your first finger to leave yourself in a good position for the high bends. The same applies for the slide to the eleventh fret slide.
In the Verse section, of which the first is tabbed, you can use the shapes for the barre chord to leave your fingers in almost the right postiton to hit the hammer-ons and slides. The barre chord is an A Major or Minor shape on the fourth (C#m x46654), second (B x24442) then open strings (A x02220) and changes twice a bar, returning to the B barre just before the next two bars.
Gear Info:
You'll need no equipment other than a Strat plugged into a Marshall. The start of the song is relatively clean, and uses the neck pickup, but if you fancy trying your hand at the solo, wah, pitchshifter or octave and reverb will all be needed to get things just right!
Gear Settings:
Treble: 7 Mid: 3 Bass: 5 Drive: 3

Does the extra "m" stop you from being able to read the column or play the song? No! So shut up... and make sure you check out the bass riff too!POSTED: 11/13/2004 - 04:55 pm / quote |
