As 2011 wraps up we all find ourselves looking to 2012 and wondering what to expect. There are a lot of album releases scheduled for 2012 and only time will tell if they live up to the hype a lot of these releases have already built up.
First Quarter
Of course, most of the album release information that is available is for the 1st Quarter of 2012 – January through March.
In the first quarter there are several releases to look forward to. Below is a brief description of each and a link for a new song of the upcoming album if it is available.
Band of Skulls
In February, and for the time being a tentative release date of 02/21, Band of Skulls has a planned release of their next album ‘Sweet Sour’.
They have released their first single from the album, ‘The Devil Takes Care of His Own’ to give us a taste of what to expect.
Below you can watch the music video for ‘The Devil Takes Care of His Own’.
12 Stones
12 Stones has a scheduled release for their next album ‘Only Human’ on March 27th – we’ll have to wait to see what happens with this one as this was originally scheduled for release in mid 2011 and got pushed out at the last minute. They have, however, released a single from their new album titled ‘Bulletproof’ which you can listen to below.
Dragonforce
Dragonforce has a yet untitled release scheduled for sometime in February. This will be their first studio album with their new vocalist, Marc Hudson. Marc Hudson joined Dragonforce after their previous vocalist, ZP Theart, left in March of 2010. For a few months now Dragonforce has been performing a few new songs live – titled ‘Cry Thunder’ and ‘Lost Fallen World’. There isn’t a music video for either song, but there is a link to a live recording of ‘Lost Fallen World’ below. I apologize for the poor audio quality.
Marilyn Manson
Marilyn Manson has the album ‘Born Villain’ scheduled for release sometime in February, and supposedly recorded without drummer, Ginger Fish, who has left the band. Both Marilyn Manson and Twiggy have made numerous statements in interviews that they believe this is their best album to date. They have released a few songs from the album, including the title track and also songs titled ‘Overneath’, ‘I Am Among No One’ and ‘Slo-Mo-Tion’. Below you can check out the title track ‘Born Villain’ with the official music video.
Silversun Pickups
Silversun Pickups upcoming album has been titled ‘3’ as a place holder title set to release in 1st quarter. This will be their third studio album, and unfortunately there is not a song available to listen to from the album. They did, however, release an EP in 2011 titled ‘Seasick’, and below you can listen to a track from this EP. Below is the title track from the EP ‘Seasick’. Again, this is not a track from their upcoming album, but if you missed the release of the EP, it is worth checking out.
Tenacious D
‘Rise of the Phoenix’ by Tenacious D is due out at some undetermined time in the 1st quarter. Supposedly there will be 3 different songs on the album all titled ‘Rise of the Phoenix’, as well as a song titled ‘Senorita’, but no other song titles have been released. Below you can listen to a poor quality audio recording of Tenacious D performing ‘Rise of the Phoenix’ on a radio show. Sorry for the poor audio quality.
Testament
Testament began recording their new album, ‘The Dark Roots of Earth’, on June 20th of 2011 and it should be releasing at some undetermined date in 1st quarter. I’ve read conflicting reports for the release date, with some in March, others in April, but most sources just saying late 1st quarter. Alex Skolnick has returned to Testament in roughly 2005, and this will be his second album with Testament since his return. Although some song titles have been publicized from the upcoming album, no audio clips seem to be available.
Second Quarter
Unfortunately, as we look into the future album releases of 2012 we come to a point where there is less and less information available and less and less audio of unreleased music. This is not a comprehensive list as a lot of bands don’t like to give any kind of release date information until it is close and they can actively promote the release. For the second quarter of 2012 I will just listing the releases to anticipate that seem like firm releases:
The Offspring will be releasing their album titled ‘Apocalyptic Guides & Inferno Theme About Nothing Meaningful’ sometime in May. The title may not even be correct, but it is the most information I can find. Members of The Offspring have stated in late 2011 that the album would actually be complete by the end of 2011, but they would be working on the artwork, etc. into 2012 before the release.
Soundgarden will be releasing an untitled album as their sixth studio release at an unspecified date in the 2nd quarter of 2012. They have been busy touring since their reunion but Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil have both given interviews regarding the new album and stated it will be 90% new material and 12 – 14 new songs are ready to go.
Tool will be releasing their as yet untitled 5th studio release at an unspecified date in the 2nd quarter. The most current information I located stated most of the music had been completed and now the lyrics are being worked on, and once those are completed they will be knocking out the recording phase. In the meantime, you can check out Maynard’s Puscifer album that released in 2011, ‘Conditions of My Parole’ to help tide you over.
Sometime in 2012
Some artists have not even set a general idea of when their new albums will release, but have stated in the media in some form that they do expect releases in 2012. I will just list the bands here that have mentioned a release in 2012, but have not given much more in the way of when the album will actually release, etc.
Ben Folds Five
Bad Religion
Black Sabbath (with Ozzy)
Green Day
Linkin Park
Metallica
Pearl Jam
Queens of the Stone Age
Rancid
Slayer
U2
Wolfmother
Alanis Morissette
Muse
There has also been some talk, mainly from DJ Ashba, of a new album by Guns N Roses sometime in 2012, but I have my doubts. If we look at ‘Chinese Democracy’ we are talking about the album that holds the record for longest in progress album and probably most expensive. I have no doubts that Axl Rose has all kinds of songs written and ready to record, but I’ll have to see some proof that he can get in the studio and turn out some finished product in a timely manner. I’m more excited about the old GnR lineup being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the possibility of some kind of reunion tour with the original lineup. That would really make 2012 a killer year.
Have we left any off the list? Which album releases are you most looking forward to in 2012?
For All Those Sleeping is planning on Releasing one and Skrillex claims he might be releasing one but who knows if that a fact or rumor and HIM is unknown. Sparks The Rescue is collecting money from a kickstarter to make an album also. Thats all i know of off the top of my head haha.
Sorry about leaving Rush off the list, I'm not sure how that happened. I'm looking forward to that album release myself. Also with the Alice in Chains, last I heard they haven't said when it would release or if it would even be in 2012 - unless I missed something.

HIM should be releasing an album in mid to late 2012, since the drummer ****ed up his arms. He's still healing.
This will be make or break for me with Dragonforce. Hopefully their songs start having a deeper meaning, rather than "so far away" "warrior" "dragon". I am a fan of them, but I really do hope that Marc brings something new to the mix.
lol this list is like the Top 10 bassists without Les Claypool... Come on! Where's Lacuna Coil, Fear Factory, No Doubt, Cradle of Filth and the rest, like the said Rush and Lamb of God?
Tenacious D played a few new songs wen they toured with Foo Fighters. The one's I heard where titled "Deathstar" and "Roadie." They said the album was also being released around Summer (Not sure if he meant in Australia or America.)
there's another new Tenacious D song aswell called "Roadies" they played it when I saw them opening for Foo Fighters, Jack said it was from the new album.
Lots of good music (hopefully) coming out in 2012. Silversun Pickups, Rush, Tool, Soundgarden, Dead Letter Circus, The Butterfly Effect, Karnivool (lots of awesome Aussie prog rock coming out right now that the world needs to start paying attention to), Black Sabbath, Pearl Jam, The Offspring, Muse. I'm skeptical about Pearl Jam, the Offspring and Muse. Hopefully they make their traditional rock albums and not some pop rock radio garbage.
Bury Tomorrow will release their 'Union of the Crowns' somewhere in te first quarter of 2012. Two songs are already available (Lionheart, Royal Blood) and they are magnificent
Completely forgot about 12 Stones' new album in 2012, but more importantly, possibly Sevendust's farewell album due out next year. Really psyched for that plus you know, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Tool, etc. Should be a phenomenal year for music.
Oh and Spineshank's comeback album that has been delayed far too much already. I think March is the time they're aiming for now when it was supposed to originally be released this past summer.
Why do they ignore Canadian bands, when most of them are better than the bands on this list? Rush- Clockwork angels and also the Tragically Hip plan to release another album this year.
RUSH! This is a big deal, really.
I'm somewhat excited for Bad Religion too, and Silversun Pickups. And Muse is always worth a listen, and will not disappoint.
BUT SERIOUSLY, Linkin Park can stop now. If it sounds like anything they've done post-Meteora, it's not the band I loved in high school, and I intend to whine about it.
Garbage, No Doubt, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins ( I didn't even know about that one. I feel like a bad fan.)
This is gunna be a gr8 year.
I'm excited for U2 and Linkin Park, and the Sabbath album should be cool. Metallica...we'll see. One that I'm really looking forward to is the new Lostprophets album, which should be coming out next year. Super excited for that
Jeff Loomis!! Meshuggah!!! Sabbath WITH OZZY!!!! Tool!!! Lamb Of God!!!!! Gojira!!!!! Holy crap 2012 could be the year that ends the world it's still gonna be an awesome year!
umm anthony green AND circa survive, hurt, possibly NIN, good old war. and these are just a FEW you missed on my most anticipated list. UG only focuses on huge bands and shitty bands. makes me sad.
Down is releasing some EP's and St. Vitus has a new album coming out in March if I'm not mistaken. Also, Control Denied is gonna come out next year. These three combined with a new Sabbath release make for a kickass year!
I know they're not the most popular band in the world; however, I'm confused why there is no mention of Behemoth. Nergal stated they would tour and release a new album. I think it's mentionable with him getting sick and all.

Soundgarden, Marilyn Manson, The Silversun Pickups, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age The Offspring and Green Day are going to have a new album in 2012? (Not all of them confirmed to be coming out 2012) but still,
Okay so this was written on the 23rd, otherwise they would have had to mention Van Halen's new album and tour which was first announced on the 26th with official release dates following on the 28th. That sould also be on the most anticipated for 2012 list. Does anybody really care that much for Slash's new album? No offense.
The Word Alive, A Day To Remember, Woe is Me, and Attack Attack!...no1 thot of these bands? COME ON GUYS...and what about Nightwish?
Nightwish released Imaginaerum a month ago. Unless you're talking about the movie, which should be in April. o i guess so man. idk the exact release dates tht come out, and i use itunes, so supposedly it says its coming out jan 10th
Yeah it got delayed here in the US. It was released in Finland on November 30th, and it won't be released here until the 10th. I couldn't wait that long because they're my favorite band and I had been waiting for it for years so I downloaded it a month ago, and I'm going to buy it when it comes out here.

Bullet for my Valentine stated that they began working on the album now!
They say there is no pressure to hurry now, but they think that they will release in 2012!
I'm actually looking forward to a lot next year - OSI, Storm Corrosion, The Butterfly Effect, Muse, Karnivool, Porcupine Tree, Rush, Metallica, Birds of Tokyo, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Coheed and Cambria, John Petrucci, etc. A few of these are unlikely for next year, but I can hope.
What's up with all the A**holes giving thumbs down to the Avenged Sevenfold comments? They f***ing rock. Hopefully they come out with something this year
Between the Buried and Me are supposed to be releasing one this year, I believe.. Although that came from my friend (who follows this stuff a lot better than me), I'm still not positive if he's correct.
There's an album coming out on May 22, but I can't for the life of me remember who it is. lol

I stayed true to the original release date in Finland. I had been waiting for it with such anticipation for years now so I couldn't wait until they released it in America haha. Its a great album; has some nice experimentation on it. I wouldn't say its their best, but still very good.
