You Be The Judge: Ultimate Guitar's Best And Worst Bands Of 2007

It’s official: There is indeed a thin line between love and hate in the rock world. If the results of the Ultimate Guitar’s poll for the best/worst band of 2007 did anything, it showed us that the most respected bands out there also tend to be the most despised. Avenged Sevenfold was a slam dunk in terms of winning the title of best band, but they also scored almost the same amount of votes at the other end of the spectrum. After perusing the message boards we knew that Avenged Sevenfold would ignite some passion, and the votes that the band received (275 for the best category, 249 for the worst) indicated we have quite the divided audience.

M. Shadows and the boys weren’t alone. There were several bands that received nods as both the best and the worst, and it’s very likely that most of you could already guess a few of those. The most pathetic showing came from artists that were immediately deemed as worthless (sorry Guns N’ Roses and The Killers) and banished to the “worst” column. To our surprise, a lot of the “worst” bands haven’t released anything for quite some time. There are a few grudge-holders out there, apparently.

So which bands were an utter disgrace to the state of rock? Who came out being the saviors? The results aren’t too shocking, but there will probably be more than a few people who will feel the results are blasphemous. If that happens to be you, don’t hold those feelings of loathing back – get to work on the message boards. By the way, if you love Fall Out Boy, get ready to defend their honor.

The Best

01. Avenged Sevenfold - 275 votes

The band might not have made it through the year unscathed (their latest album earned 1 out of 10 stars by Rock Sound – yikes), but there were plenty of voters who deemed the self-titled record far better than any of their previous efforts. Of course, when you look at the numbers, it was still a close one.

Whether you wrote scathing reviews of their latest album on the message boards or have found genius in every track, you proved that Avenged Sevenfold evokes emotion – and that’s not such a terrible thing.

02. Foo Fighters - 187 votes

Dave Grohl remains one of the most likeable musicians in rock today, and it also never hurt that he came from one of the most idolized bands in history. But the Foo Fighters have never had to rely on anything other than their own music to win audiences over, and that fan base has continued to multiply since its 1995 debut. Their newest offering Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace stepped away from the rock a bit, but it was actually the low-key moments that left the biggest impression. Grohl stayed true to his word and wrote the instrumental track Ballad Of The Beaconsfield Miners for the album, which served as a tribute to 2 trapped Australian miners who asked for iPods with Foo Fighters songs while waiting for their rescuers. Any rock star could have written a mediocre, assembly line song as a tribute, but Grohl managed to craft a beautiful acoustic number that stands out as one of the best on Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.

03. Velvet Revolver - 146 votes

With the exception of vocalist Scott Weiland’s DUI arrest, Velvet Revolver can reflect upon this year with satisfaction. The band has yet to gain the success that Guns N’ Roses or Stone Temple Pilots had during their glory years, but Velvet Revolver has attracted its own steadfast fan base regardless. Libertad was not the perfect work of music mastery we might hope for from the likes of Slash and Weiland, but it still was a testament to the riff god that Slash is and always will be.

04. Machine Head - 140 votes

After going through a period a few years back where they couldn’t find a label to take their demo, Machine Head is now the epitome of success. There are few bands that could top the highs that vocalist/guitarist Robb Flynn experienced this year. The band landed a coveted spot on tours with Megadeth and Lamb of God, the single “Aesthetics Of Hate” received a Grammy nomination, and The Blackening CD made the top-5 lists of several publications. Even with a little bump in the road (one word: Disney), 2007 could easily be Machine Head’s strongest year to date.

05. Radiohead - 132 votes

While not helping amend the environmental crisis or battling major label monopolies, Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke has managed to still find time to be musically prolific.

Whether he’s recording with Radiohead or pursuing a solo venture, Yorke has served as not only an idol to fans, but an inspiration to peers in the industry.

The Worst

01. Fall Out Boy! - 442 votes

I’m almost beginning to feel sorry for Pete Wentz and the boys.

Fall Out Boy won the title of “worst” band by a landslide, beating out everyone from Britney Spears to Nickelback.

Whether it’s because of their teen idol status or the so-so album Infinity On High, the guys in Fall Out Boy offended on many, many different levels.

02. Linkin Park - 276 votes

The “M” word oozed out of Linkin Park’s latest record Minutes To Midnight, and we’re not talking about “metal” or “Mike-Shinoda-as-the-focal-point” (okay, that’s more than one word). No, unfortunately we mean the often-feared “maturity.” To be fair, maturing is not the most horrible thing in the world, but when the music leaves your fans bored, we’ve got a problem. Linkin Park still has flocks of dedicated listeners, but vocalist Chester Bennington possibly pushed the limit when he decided to explore his sentimental side this time around.

03. Avenged Sevenfold - 249 votes

And we once again return to Avenged Sevenfold. Conversations on the UG message boards were heated over Avenged Sevenfold this year, with the band’s new self-titled record as the focal point. Did M. Shadows ruin his voice by having vocal surgery? Has the band completely forgotten how to write music? You pondered all the hard-hitting questions, and more comments were still being added the last time we checked. But for as many discontented customers as there were, don’t feel too sorry for Avenged Sevenfold. The majority still felt they kicked more ass than anyone else on the music scene today.

04. My Chemical Romance - 246 votes

Like Green Day’s situation, it’s been a while since the band released The Black Parade, and My Chemical Romance has somehow continued to piss off legions of music lovers everywhere. The band spent most of 2007 in a touring frenzy (minus the time off for food poisoning), but vocalist Gerard Way did make time to set the record straight about one particular subject.

To put it succinctly, Way stated back in September that “emo is a pile of shit.” As entertaining as his statement was, the UG readers’ comments were even more enjoyable in a different, brutally caustic kind of way. By the results of the poll, it looks like there’s quite a few who believe Mr. Way is in denial.

05. Green Day - 136 votes

Green Day hasn’t released an album in a little over 3 years, and yet people are still pretty riled up about whether or not American Idiot was worth all of the hype. The record won favor with radio listeners, but old school Green Day fans weren’t so sure the band still had the creativity or punk attitude to warrant all of the accolades.

Vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong added to the dissatisfaction a few months ago when he referred to the current music scene as “stagnant.” After his statement found its way into the media, many found it puzzling that a man who writes power chord-driven songs could really help solve the stagnancy problem.

I wanted Tool and/or Opeth up there too, but it seems they didnt do much this year except (maybe) touring.

Green day in there, I don't know but I think their first albums were pretty nice, so is American Idiot. The John Lennon cover and the song with U2 were pretty shit but I'm not gonna say they suck because of that.

I think the voting should be that you take the total of votes for the best band and subtract the votes for worst band and that's how many points a band would recieve.

I agree with the worst bands. And I listen to classic rock, so I can't really say much about the best bands. I'll just say that it's not my style, I thought Van Halen might be up there, with the tour that hasn't failed. Who would have thought that Eddie Van Halen and a lead singer, especially David Lee Roth, could coexist for so long?

The only reason I ever picked-up an A7X album was because of him. He's drunk alot. Go watch Slash play when he's drunk. It's basically the same thing lol. This is one of the stupidest columns I've seen on UG. This idea should simply have been left to rot.

How can you take this as a valid overview of the best and worst bands. Look anywhere on the forum and you'll see a ridiculous amount of bashing and flaming from people who haven't even heard the band they are complaining about. Quite frankly, it's pretty clear that the people who voted for Green Day haven't been paying attention to the band they hate so much, considering they haven't done anything this year.

Also, to people whining about why bands like Led Zep, Thin Lizzy and AC/DC aren't up here - get with the times, don't be stupid and just vote for your favourite band even though they've done nothing for millenia.

First off, MCR definitely sucks. Always have always will. A7X used to be good, but they lost it when I began to hear 'Bat Country' 5 times a day. The top 5 best bands, not so sure about that list. Velvet Revolver dissapoints me more and more over time. And music must've really have been terrible this year. A7X was THE best band?? Hell no. Far from it. But it's all about opinion isn't it?? Personally, I would've put Sevendust in there instead of A7X and Otep instead of Velvet Revolver, but that's just me.

These Best/Worst band lists are all very inaccurate. Everyone has their own opinion on bands. Each band appeals to different music tastes. For instance, 2 of my friends love Minutes to Midnight. No list is going to change people's tastes.

Ok, here's my take on the entire list.

Avenged Sevenfold is one of the more overrated bands on the face of the earth. Take them off the top and keep them off the worst.
The Foo Fighters I have always loved and are where they deserved.
Velvet Revolver is a great band. I'm not going to complain about them being there, as well as Machine Head.
I'm a pretty big fan of Radiohead as well.

The worst, I agree with four of the choices...wow, hard to expect that when you look at my username.

Fall Out Boy is the worst band...EVER. I'm a pop-punk fan and cannot stand them. Whoever said that they are not rock are right.

Linkin Park has fallen off my fav list. Minutes to Midnight has got to be one of the worst albums of the year. And to think...I used to listen to them...

I have never liked MCR. Maybe they shouldn't be on the list due to the fact that they haven't tortured us this year and kept their crap to themselves for now, but they are ideally in their place for any year they are active.

Now, Green Day shouldn't be on this list. How can you be the worst band of 2007 when you haven't released an album since 2004? I'm one of their biggest fans, but they shouldn't even be used in the same sentence as 2007. Sure, they shouldn't be the best of 2007...and yeah, American Idiot was a definite step back. But if you compare the American Idiot step back to the Minutes to Midnight step back, you realize it isn't that bad. I'm sure you guys can agree with me when I say in order to be the worst band in 2007...you have to exist in 2007.

I personally think that both lists are completely bogus. I don't think anyone has the right to make a best/worst bands ever list, unless, this list was for their self. Its impossible for a group of people to come to a mature decision about who is better or worst simply because music strikes each of us different. Maybe some of us only listen to music for the technical ability that goes into it. Maybe the lyrics speak to us. Maybe we just like to mellow out after a long day. It doesn't really matter which it is, no two people will have the same opinion about every band. It also seems quite unfair to harass someone about a band they like or to pick on them about defending a band that you don't like. Its an opinion, if you don't agree, you don't agree and thats all that should be said.

MCR had a good year, not great but good. They kept getting injured or sick or married or yelled at marilyn manson the entire time.

The Used had a bad year. Changed drummers, Bert had surgery, CD was too much of a pace change, and they spent most of their free time hating on MCR again.

Avenged Sevenfold REALLY made a darn bad mistake when they recorded A Little Piece Of Heaven. But other than that, not too bad. Unlike SOME PEOPLE, I used to listen to FOB and even unthinkably used to embrace their music. until, that is, i saw the lyrics. Nothing but songs about love and sex? Eww. No thanks. MCR and GD? Hell, they both get boring kinda quick, plus their songs aren't that technical. Excpet for MCR sometimes. Ray Toro IS one of the most technical guitarists in mianstream pop-rock. It's also worthy of note that it's them who got me into rock and metal in the first place.

It saddens me that Linkin Park was on the list. Although M2M wasn't my favorite album from Linkin Park, I think it was definetly better then people make it out to be. It opened up a lot of new doors from them. They broke away from the Nu-Metal genre and now they can basically do whatever the hell they want to. M2M had too many slow songs I admit, but it had so much variety it showed Linkin Park can do more then what they've done in the past. They're ****ing amazing live too.

People are too keyed up about whether a new album will live up to their previous albums. People and bands change, if they didn't then the music we listen to today would be really boring.

Oh well, posting opinions on the internet doesn't really solve anything though :p.

ok, personally i would've put machine head first on the best but probably because i've only just discovered them and i love The Blackening. But Avenged Sevenfold are good. I suppose muse should be where radiohead are but because they haven't done much this year i understand why they're not here. and to the muse fans complaining, be grateful they're not on the worst list! which brings me to this: MCR, FOB, and Green Day are the plague of the earth as far as i'm concerned. Green Day are just overrated and old but MCR are the reason people walk around looking like marilyn manson! they basically write songs that say to people "did you know that life actually does suck if you waste enough time trying to think it sucks?" and FOB are only famous because their bassist (who probably isnt even that talented) is so "hot". who can even hear him in the songs? as much as i like them, i agree linkin park are getting a bit boring. although they do still sound good, much like foo fighters do some acoustic stuff. unfortunately people associated linkin park with heavier stuff so much that it freaked people out when they lightened up.

Honestly I don't think Linkin Park's new album is 'terrible'. I actually love it to bits. So what if it is softer? It seems that people are totally in a box here when leaving comments. The lists that are good and bad are taking into account a plethora of opinions. There's people suggesting that everything on the best list should be metal...well no. I am a big fan of metal, but as a musician, I like to keep my musical horizons as open as possible. The list attempts to encompass the whole musical world as best as it can, not just one ****ing genre. Metal is good and all, but there is more to life than just that one genre.

So please people, you're allowed to have your opinion, but you should also take into account that there are many people who think many different ways. I feel that this list is fair enough to a general populous, but really, there is no way that a list like this can ever be remotely right.

So...I agree with the list to a point...I like that the Foo Fighters are high up. And Fall Out Boy and MCR are not contributing much to the modern music scene.

Anyway, my point is that there are a lot of people leaving comments that are totally undeveloped and ridiculous. If you have something to say, then for ****'s sake make it sensible. Your opinion is fine, but the world probably sees things in a bigger perspective than you.

My Chem - Definitely didn't deserve their place on the worst list. Their last album might not've been their best work but come on, Plus the majority of you probably haven't even listened to their 1st & 2nd albums. I bet half of the people being nasty about them think Metalica & Maiden are the best thing since sliced bread (I'd just like to take this oportunity to say that I think Metalica & Iron Maiden are two of the most over-rated bands to ever come out of the metal scene).

Although after reading the little booklet in LP's album, you'll realise they only changed their style to see how good they can sound when they're not going on about how they're disappointments to their parents (numb). crap sells: look at MCR. They play all power chords with catchy melodies. same applies to GReen Day. I would say about 0 music theory or any higher level playing is involved with either band

Not every song needs to modulate to the sub-dominant during the middle section which is in 5/8, using sweeped modal scales.

Ok, 2 things that really suprised me.

1: why is Avenged on both sides? Are they the worst band, or the best one? WTF?

2: One of the only reasons LP is on there as the worst is because of M2M. And that is a stone cold fact. Whish is stupid anyway, because judgements shouldn't be made so quickly. People were shocked about the change at first. Being an LP fan myself, I was too. But then after time I realised that nothing was missing, a select few songs on the CD still contained everything the band had before. Chester's hardcore and uncopyable screaming was in at least 4 songs of the album, and the band went with a new theme, *mainly cause of all the n00bs out there calling them emo*, they switched it to political views, which makes sense because of all the political shit going on. I don't think the song "The Little Things Give You Away" would have sounded good all angry and hard, considering it was about hurricane Katrina.

those two things said, I'm not too suprised with the list. Fall Out Boy has had more haters than fans over the years. Green day needs to release a friggin album. And the My Chemical Romance style emo is pretty out.

On the Other side, Velvet revolver was a shoe-in, who doesn't like Slash? *aside from the band's name being such a copy of Guns n' Roses*, and Radiohead I wasn't too sure about, but hey, the votes were tallied right?

Because the more liked a band becomes, also the more disliked they become. Hence Avenged Sevenfolds appearance in both lists. You woudlnt see a band who had had a quiet or unsuccessful year in these lists. However personally I would find it very hard to defend MCR's place in the worst list, although I suppose I could forgive somone for taking them out of it if they were replaced by the Arctic Monkeys. I also think 3 years since American Idiot, people should start giving Green Day a break. I know American Idiot was shit but there is worse stuff out there. I don't have Libertad, but from what I've heard it's nowhere near as good.
Contraband was a decent album. It wasn't paticularly exciting or fresh, but you can't tell me the riff to Slither didn't destroy pretty much all songs in 2004.

I agree with the worst list except for A7X, but the best list is iffy. Alter Bridge should be up there, Blackbird is an awesome album.

I personally like Avenged Sevenfold... their old stuff is loads better but the new stuff is still okay. They definitely shouldn't be in the best list if we're going by their latest album... if this were 2003 after the release of Waking the Fallen, however, I'd say they should be number one. Meh, there's my two cents.

Also, why the Fuck is everyone asking about why Muse isn't on the top? I personally don't see the appeal in their music. Sure, they're creative but creativity doesn't necessarily equate with good music. Look at Sunn 0)))... their music is creative but all it is is a bunch of ambient noise. Atmospheric stuff. I don't have Libertad, but from what I've heard it's nowhere near as good.
Contraband was a decent album. It wasn't paticularly exciting or fresh, but you can't tell me the riff to Slither didn't destroy pretty much all songs in 2004.

I agree wholeheartedly. I don't have Libertad either but Contraband was great. When my band got together Slither is one of the first songs we played before starting to write original stuff!

You cant compare Slash and Synyster Gates.
Slash is infinitely more talented.

perhaps the reason that there is not all metal bands up there on the top 5 list is because they all sound so similar and there is nothing to choose between them where as most of the bands on the top 5 list do things that are original and different and the reason that it says at the top that it seemed to be the same bands coming up on both lists is because some people love it and some think its overated but you don't get publicised by being the same as everyone else

Now, Green Day shouldn't be on this list. How can you be the worst band of 2007 when you haven't released an album since 2004? I'm one of their biggest fans, but they shouldn't even be used in the same sentence as 2007. Sure, they shouldn't be the best of 2007...and yeah, American Idiot was a definite step back. But if you compare the American Idiot step back to the Minutes to Midnight step back, you realize it isn't that bad. I'm sure you guys can agree with me when I say in order to be the worst band in 2007...you have to exist in 2007.

i think that that all the bands up there were worst of 2007 with the exception of radiohead. I think that Between the Buried and Me's new release colors is one of the best things to ever happen to expirimental and metal music. The Black Dahlia Murders new release Nocturnal was quite possibly the fastest album ever written the timing is incredible. Thats how i see things anyways.

I am sorry, but I cannot see the Foo Fighters as being number two, but I guess it is opinion. I mean, I didn't like Nirvana, and I don't like the Foo Fighters, case closed. As a musician i know that most people think good music as music that is appealing to their ears right? Well to real musicians like myself we know that it is also music that is written very well and not, for lack of a better term, cheated. My 5 year old brother can finger four different power chords and call it a song by green day or other bands that really can't write TALENTED music. I dont think Linkin Park shoulda been on there though, and if it had to be it should've been number 5. Their latest albums wasnt too great, but I dont think it was that bad. especially in comparison to My Chemical Romance or Avenged Sevenfold.

i agree with greendayfan222, its really not fair to say that Green Day was on worst bands when theyre last album came out in 04. its just a bunch of Green Day haters that will do anything to try to convince people that GD is a bad band.
A good band is creative and tries new things with every album. that is what Green Day does, i have all 9 of their CDs and they all have a unique sound.
A7X is the exact same way, all 4 of their albums sound different and in their own way, they all sound awesome. they are a very talented and creative band. why would you want the same old music being given to you each album?
i have to admit, A7X's last album was my least favorite and it, along with City Of Evil sounded really different than their old stuff and thats what divided up their fans, but come on, have some respect for the most creative bands out there.

Basically, music doesn’t have a sing goal when it comes to sound.
