Having a plan was the way for me to decide that I needed a new guitar teacher. The lessons I was having would simply get me through some pop songs and teach me strumming and new chords (all good, but already mastered by myself on my own.)

After hearing a friend of mine playing his guitar I promptly changed my lessons to his teacher. He clearly understood my goals (playing lead, great solos, and all the techniques involved.) Every lesson puts me through a different challenge and he's got good metrics to measure my progress.

I've given several good steps towards my goal while having theses lessons and I progressed a lot more in the last 6 months than in the previous year-and-a-half with a bad teacher.

Good article. As we all know its very easy to lose focus when playing and the subsequently become stagnant. Looking forward to the follow up to this

Another article that points out pretty obvious things that people are for the most too lazy to think about without encouragement. A decent article!

This was just so inspiring! However.. how can I know where I am headed when I don't know what all the destinations really looks like? Every new style and technique I hear or learn gives me more understanding of where I actually want to go, but I can never clearly say where is it just now. How could I know whether I really want to be somewhere, unless I am at least halfway there and see how it goes in that area..
To me, short term plans are the way. I want to learn a technique, get to some point in my journey, not to be closer to my destination, but to get in that spot, from where I can see further and decide where to go next.
For me, this is journey with no clear destination..
(other than me being satisfied with my journey, being sick of it, or having a carpal tunnel syndrome)

I find that it actually doesn't matter, in a way, what your goal is, as long as it's there to keep you playing. A kid could start out wanting to be the next airhead lip-syncing 'rockstar', but as they learn more techniques they come to respect and appriciate shredders or great composers, prog-rockers or whatever, and change their focus. That's how I interpreted it anyway - to have an inspiration, and vision to help you along - even if it's not where you end up.
