Excellently written! I agree with most everything, however, one thing ought to be said about tube amps. It's quite common to buy a bit of a smaller tube amp (I did so myself, 40 Watts) for both price and portability (in my case) and tone (think Vox AC 30), and then use a high quality instrument mic to mic the amp. I have done this and couldn't be happier, I can use one amp for gigs and recording and still have stellar tone. Just an idea for some, and again, very well written!

excellent advice, I was trying to answer that question myself, combo or stack,
I think I'll go with a combo and get a extension cab when I need it.

Mr_Fooz :
some good things but I have a few things to say

1) solid state cleans are almost ALWAYS better than tube cleans. I have a Peavey XXL Combo that is $900 CAN on the street and its cleans are amazing. If you buy a decent solid state its cleans should almost always outstrip tubes.
2)Crates dont all suck, the Blue Voodoos are incredible.
3)you make it sound like tube amps are god's gift, but believe me, a tube amp will not "inspire you to play" any more than a solid state will if you don't love the instrument.

My tip is when going to buy an amp look at two things: the wattage (make sure its power can suit your needs) and the tone. If it sounds good, who cares whether its tube or solid state. And if it sounds good to begin with it shouldn't just fall apart on you.

That's all I have to say about that. Peace out.

Mr_Fooz :
and there are many instances of great players who play high gain pinch harmonics who play solid state amps. Just look at Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. He plays through a solid state Randall stack and he is the king of the pinch harmonic, second only to zakk wylde.

I might point out to Mr Fooz that Zack Wylde uses an ALL Tube JCM800 modified with an additional gain stage.
DGONZ- Awesome job.

man dont dog on the crates solid state or tubes. the crate i have has more balls than any marshall solid state and those avt series. blue voodoo is a mean loud mfer with more balls than the mode 4 at eleven when the blue voodoo is at 5 (im talkin bout the 300 watt voodoo). he didnt get into the different sound qualities that stacks and combos have. he didnt talk about the general rule for dB with watts and speakers. he didnt talk about the sound that the speakers give you as in the brand, format (cab, combo) and type of magnets used.

and correct me if im wrong. Dimebag Darrel uses a randall warhead. im pretty sure its tubes. but mostly balls and 300 watts

and by "balls," you mean....?

of course 300w is going to blow away a marshall avt. of COURSE. you didnt take into mind that the avt's dont come in 300w amounts.

PEAVEY RULES! YOU NEED TO GIVE PROPS TO PEAVEY.

Methinks my Peavey Ultra 212 combo can dish it out with the big boys. May not when it comes to pure volume, but it's perfectly fine, tonewise. I bought it for $500 used. Quite the deal.

Oh, and you seem kind of ignorant saying price and quality always go hand in hand.

Just cause you use that stuff doesnt make it the only good amps to get, Line6 for instance... hello?

Hello back.

Peavey and Line6 were both mentioned, Peavey with various props.

Methinks you didn't read the column.

Shadowofarobot :
one thing i would like to say is that some guitars seem to like the solid state amps and others simply sound like crap unless played through a tube amp. for instance my gibson sounds very dark and just overall not good on a tube amp while my parker (which i put seymore duncans in) really sings and every string is heard on a tube but not a solid state. other than that your article rocked

Great Article, I don't like Peavy's personally, but they are cheap and get the job done.

thank you, there was a lot of things that i didnt kno, and im sure they will help in the future, as i am in a band and we are looking for new amps

jtwickedme :
Nice article, but you should beware some things you are saying are not right:

Roland does not make and, to the best of my knowledge, has never made tube amps.
Some good all-tube brands would be Roland, Peavey, and Fender.

But it is still a very nice article.
