Good thread. You put alot of ideas out there that should be common but not enough people really do all this.
First band I played in I just worried about playing my part during rehearsal. We got a gig way before I expected it and felt like crap not knowing how to act on stage. People don't just come to hear music, they also want a show!

You're absolutely correct.
Also, recording you're music won't just help you remember what you have conceived but will also help you edit and criticize it. For me its a little different from hearing while playing and just hearing it- when you listen to music as a whole song and not just a dimension of it.
