Im so sorry but u have so much things that r usefull in composing for sum ppl. But for example i do not use those things anymore. Or if i do, as an extend of an basic idea. And all this...
Its unfortunate but many of worlds do-it-their-way guitarists havent learned any of this(HendriX, is a fine example).
But as an article for ppl who think degrees r usefull, this is very nice.

good article, but would it make more sense to go to an excellent guitar teacher than spend all the time and money going to a university?

in short, sick. You have a solid article that someone w/ limited theory knowledge (such as myself) could apreciate, and while i dont plan on getting a degree, your article helped give me some direction into what i may want to explore more of.

Great Article, but for some people it may help and for others it may not. Personally I just hear a melody in my head, put it down on guitar, and then work out the rhythm and everything. I know it's not professional, but that's me and I'm not into music theory either. And no, I'm not some power chord guitarist. But I liked the article and took my time reading it and I respect you taking your time and writing the benefits of getting a traditional four-year degree in music. Made me think.

I think you're articles are really informative but after hearing the audio streams from your website I'm not the most impressed person on the earth right now. I fully respect and admire your abilities to recognize, understand, and utilize advanced music principles but advanced playing is something to always be admired in collaboration with the more advanced knowledge of theory.

Not to say that you dont have any talent it's just that the songs dont showcase your ability to play intricate or original riffs. Another thing to note is your lack of amp setting versatility because the settings are the same for each song.

Anyways good articles at least, hats off to you

From what I understand, Jimi was a much more serious musician than he let on and, though he wanted to take his stuff to the next level, his higher ups kept pressure on him to continue his wild-child act.

i liked your article, and I think its unfortunate how undervalued a musical education is for most guitarists. Most people don't realize that there is a difference between playing and knowing what it is your playing. It took me a while to undertand this myself. Basically, I liked that you took the time to convince some people to learn music theory. i would also like to add that I have found it useful in learning other instruments (such as piano), and I would suggest to anyone to broaden thier musical horizons, and learn other instuments as well.

Great guitarists such as Hendrix who (apparently) didn't learn theory and advanced concepts, only succeeded because they were exceptionally naturally talented musicians and practiced HARD. It's not acceptable for an average guitarist to use people like this as their excuse for not taking initiative and trying to learn more advanced musical concepts and simply just get better at music! If you don't go to college, that's absolutely fine, but at least try to learn something! Be wary of getting to the point where you can play some really wicked songs well, don't leave it at that.

I gotta admit this article made me think about going to college for music theory. The knowledge that I gain from that experiece will make me a way more better guitarist, at least in my opinion. That piece of song "epic" with the 5 guitar layers, that is some melodic stuff right there.

Awsome article, I start Music classes in august. My two Idols are what got me going when I saw they both attended music colleges. John Petrucci, and Joel Stroetzel that is, though Joel did not finish, due to the commitment he had to KSE.

nopoleon779467 :
if you dont play by the notes on the neck can you still improvise?and will you be able to make it sound emotion cuz "I'll play a D# because it's the altered 7th of E minor, and it resolves up by step to the root if it's in the outer voice, and it's the major 3rd of the V chord in a V-I progression, which is what the riffs are doing in background. I'm on B major (V) now, and the next chord is E minor, so my next note should be E, even if only briefly. Maybe I'll quickly move up to a G to emphasize the minor tonality of the key. Or maybe I'll play a G#, making it sound like I'm in E major instead, though this will only work if the riff isn't playing a G natural. Since the chord is an E5 voicing of E and B, though, it will work."dosnt sound to emotional.
