Having written the "incomplete and overrated" article
of The Most Underrated Musicians Of All Time, I am ready to write a second list. Now critics, I am ever so grateful for your advice and comments - although, I would like to re-mention the fact that it's my personal opinion. Now in this article, I have packed in a lot more, and as I stated in the summary, the previous article was written for advice mainly, and I never thought it would make front page in a million years. So now, I want to do justice for my writing and my musical knowledge. Ready?
1) Adrian Belew
is an American guitarist who worked with artists such as David Bowie
, Frank Zappa
, Talking Heads
, Nine Inch Nails
, etc. Mainly as a session and touring guitarist. But boy, can he play! He is known for using a lot of vibrato in an experimental style and he's also known for that crimson suit!
Key Tracks: "Inner Revolution
", "Only A Dream
2) Lita Ford
now many people have probably heard this name. But a few years back, Rolling Stone did a poll on female guitar players, and Joan Jett
ranked higher than Lita Ford
. Don't get me wrong - I love me some Joan Jett
. But if people seriously think she's a better guitarist or singer than Lita, they're kidding themselves. If you don't know her, check her out Now.
Key Tracks: "Kiss Me Deadly
", "Playing With Fire
", "Close My Eyes Forever
3) The Pretty Reckless
has been getting a lot of bad press almost everywhere they go. Now, I don't know about everywhere else in the world, but in Australia they haven't received nearly as much credit as they should. Taylor Momsen
may dress provocatively and have a who-the-hell-cares attitude about her - but she can sing. She can scream. She can groan and moan with the best of them. And better than most. A true female rocker who isn't given nearly enough credit.
Key Tracks: "Make Me Wanna Die
", "My Medicine
4) T Rex
had to be one of the best acts of the 70's. They were right up there with Bowie
and Mott The Hoople
as a Glam Rock hero. But are they given any credit for it today or even remembered? Marc Bolan
, the lead singer of T Rex
, died young in a car crash (which he predicted, mind you) and it seemed that a decade or so after his death, people simply forgot or didn't car anymore.
Key Tracks: "Get It On
", "Hot Love
", "Children Of The Revolution
5) Brian May
hardly gets any recognition for his playing. Yes, he's that guy in Queen
with the black, curly hair who plays guitar. He's a spectacular guitarist and hardly ever gets mentioned when people are discussing great guitarists. He can play melodic rock and still manage to really rip up a fret board. There are just no words.
Key Tracks: "Sheer Heart Attack
", "Tie Your Mother Down
", "Hammer To Fall
6) The White Stripes
were extremely experimental, wonderfully eccentric, sometimes very sensitive, sometimes very strange. People think they're a little weird and they may know a few songs from The White Stripes
, but they don't really delve into the music because they have different expectations of it. But Jack White
especially, is a brilliant musician. Very skilled, very interesting, and never a carbon copy of someone else. I suggest if you haven't already, you need to go and listen.
Key Tracks: "Jolene
" (their cover), "Seven Nation Army
", "Blue Orchid
are one of the dirtiest, meanest, scratches-down-your-back bands of this day. They're like the Motley Crue
of the 2000's. And I suggest you check them out immediately. Loud guitars, growling vocals, and a mean rhythm section. Youtube
Key Tracks: "Take On The Night
8) L.A. Guns
didn't get nearly enough recognition, I think. They're like Guns N Roses
, Motley Crue
and Van Halen
mushed into one dirty-rock-n-roll band. A true energy from the 80's hair metal, they really didn't blow up like they should have. When you mention the 80's to some people, all they might mention is Bon Jovi
, Guns N Roses
, Def Leppard
and Motley Crue
. All amazing bands, but L.A. Guns
should be right up there on that list.
Key Tracks: "Sex Action
", "The Ballad Of Jayne
", "I Wanna Be Your Man
9) Laura Wilde
is just one of those artists who bring you back to true Rock 'N' Roll grit. She plays guitar well, and no she's not the best vocalist but she holds her own. Not mainstream and hardly recognized, but she's a great musician, and a great chick - very down to earth and very rock chic. Definitely worth a listen.
Key Tracks: "Sold My Soul
, a band that survived the 80's but hardly anyone remembers. Sad, really. But this band is brilliant, and even better live. They join wailing vocals, slide guitar, hard rock and awesome passion. You could tell just by listening to a few tracks that they love music and that's what they live for. Seriously underrated, and they definitely deserve more.
Key Tracks: "Gypsy Road
", "Push Push
", "Don't Know What You Got
" ("Till It's Gone
Well, that raps up the second Most Underrated Musicians Of All Time. I hope that people are more respective to this list, although I still stick by the first one (particularly Steve Clark
and Rick Allen
) and appreciate all the comments and advice. I put a mixture of bands/musicians above. If we had to go through all the most underrated musicians of all time, we'd be here for years, but in my opinion these are some of the most predominant. The point of these lists are so that people who may not have heard some of the people, can go and listen - you might be surprised!
Once again, thank you for the recognition, recommendations, advice, comments, everything! Consider it all taken aboard.
