great article man!! it didn't really help me 'cause i'm not bored of playing guitar but was still somewhat inspiring.

Tip top work.

Excellent. 5 stars. Definitely need to switch from piano theory to guitar... *makes mental note*
POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 10:42 am / quote |
hEadShoVeL :
damn i just realize that i have 0 theory that sucks, all i do is just read tabs see the tuning and thats it....can anyone tell me is that a bad thing???
POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 10:59 am / quote |
GuitarStrings12 :
nicely said man!! You learn well and teach me ..........3yrs and i still suck at guitar LOL
POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 11:02 am / quote |
InquisitorJimbo :
headshovel, it dont suck the fact you have no theory knowledge. Before i taught myself the guitar i was taught the sax by a pro. He taught me theory and if it wasnt for him i wouldn't be botherd to learn theory now. I just think theory helps a lot for writers of music, but bedroom artists just need a knowledge of reading tabs or other forms of music.
By the way, great article. i have a few ideas........

POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 11:28 am / quote |
hEadShoVeL :
ok define bedroom guitarist....they just sit is their rooms and just play? damn i gatta get some theory knowledge then....i'm in a band, lead guitarist, but haven't really started composing any of our own stuff yet just covers

Geldof...That was a "SUPERB" article with immense efforts to get the point across & I m sure,U r successful...WONDERFUL article(Real Long time huh!)

I relate heavily to this coz i am exactly in that state of guitar-coma where i lack the basic interest to pick the damn six-stringer & start playing. This is bcoz i m alone, without frndz or accompainsts...I have an acoustic guitar man...So i cant relate to all the Electric guitar grub u blurted, though it made sense.
I dont know Why,but GELDOF,i cant get that drive, the motivation,to start playing new stuff. I m sick of playing the same old stuff again, scales r so boring & if i play somethng else, then i feel like i m playing the same shit again.I m confused, so i let my guitar lay at its undisturbed corner.Pls HELP!Anywayz ur article's surely an inspration 4 me to start playing guitar seriously..After all,Its all in the mind.THANX.

Dammit, where's my numbers?
Anyway, I'm glad this was well recieved so far, but incidentally this is my fifth column since the Ultimate Buyers Guide Part 3 is being put on the shelf until my coursework's done.
Anyway, happy reading, and watch out for me because frigginjerk is on his way out!

i was bored a couple months ago, then i started playing some random chromatic finger exercises (gradually increasing difficulty) and voila! now i am back in with my guitar.

nice article

Pumpkinsmasher :
yeah great artice, i can tell u put in alot of thought there. shit now i feel all inadequate and stuff, i mean ive been challenging myself and even getting pretty good at Stairway, and i make up riffs and songs, but i dont actually kno wut the hell im playing most of the time. do u think it's more important to kno the name of every chord and where 2 play all the scales, or is it ok 2 just have a really good ear for music and kno what stuff sounds good together?
POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 02:01 pm / quote |
Pumpkinsmasher :
oo, and duz anyone kno where 2 get cheap distortion pedals?
POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 02:01 pm / quote |
megaderrick :
good work, man. i've been playing for a few years, and i'm not bored with it, but you've given me some good tips. keep up the ass-kicking.
POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 02:49 pm / quote |
Geldof the Grey :
Well, I think it's important to know the names of the open chords and what-not, but not Emaj7add9/D if you see what I mean. You cna get by with limited theory, but it's a good idea to understand when you are playing wierd scales and chords.
POSTED: 03/05/2004 - 03:07 pm / quote |
Geldof the Grey :
That was to Pumpkinsmasher, btw. He should also know that you can buy cheap pedals from pawn shops or second hand guitar stores (of course).

megaderrick: Kicking ass is what I do.

the fendernator :
sorry geldof the grey but i use a vibrator all the time when i play. you just turn it on and it does the work for you. and it keeps you occupied when you havent got a guitar too...

Nice article. A 5 fret natural harmonic on the D string is a D, two octaves higher than an open D.

I agree, this is a very helpfull article, even if your not bored of playing guitar its a good idea to learn these things. I have been learing odd middle eastern and asian scales for inspiring, and new idea's. This was a well put together article.

Every one should listen to Steve Vai for inspiration, no matter what style you play.

KevinHallX :
great article, i think i will try those things. HOWEVER, i have to disagree about the 12-string idea, i bought one from a buddy's mom of mine for $115 and i've hardly used the thing a dozen times in the 6 months i've had it.

i have been playin a while and people say im quite good, but i use no effects or pedals and im on a limited budget. what would you advise me to buy
POSTED: 03/06/2004 - 12:58 am / quote |
bobisonthecob :
it did kind of suck, it was a good idea, but things you suggested weren't really guitar player ideas, it was more like if you just picked up a guitar and want to abuse the PRIVALEGE to play a guitar...

i dont know where im going with this, no one reads messages this long anyways

grood article.. the first song i learned was one last breath. after that i jus learned some easy intros to some other songs, but not much more. i got kinda bored and played it with jus 2 fingers so decided to try to improve my fingerpicking. then i got into theory and am stil in it.. ...
POSTED: 03/06/2004 - 08:40 am / quote |

ignore the rest, now listen to the best(me)
i didnt read it all the way through, maybe i should, but it seems good from what ive read.

I will be good at guitar some day.

Tom Martin :
another idea to make it more fun is to take a leaf out of tom morello's book.
try finding new ways to actually *play* your guitar.
hes used a magnet, alan key, effects on feedback, guitar lead... hes done the lot..

its great fun playing most of his stuff... give it a go.

why would it be getting boring in the first place if ur bored with ur guitar then ur natural reaction would be 2 start something new anyway and not have someone tell u knew ways of styles discover them ur self
POSTED: 03/06/2004 - 09:30 pm / quote |
basketofplastic :
o and u wanna know something 2 make ur guitar really fun put the amp by someones head wile ther sleeping and pump as much volume and distortion as u can and play metal it will give the person a heart attack

Nice one.. well written and with good opinions.. One question however: Should a person that is just learning how to play start playing with effects? These things can make you a god when youre not, you know.. I believe that they should be used only after the guitarist has mastered his clean sound..
POSTED: 03/07/2004 - 11:14 am / quote |

If you're trying to learn a song with heavy tremolo it'll sound like crap without tremolo. Use effects when you need them. And don't abuse, sometimes less is more.

Hey this article sucked. After reading it, I took my acoustic and electric guitars, burned them, and decided to learn to play the cowbell.

All kidding aside, I haven't grown bored but wanted to read the article in case ::gasp:: the time ever came. Fantastic job Geldof.

POSTED: 03/08/2004 - 09:59 am / quote |
OnspringFan :
aright...great article, it made me think some. the only complaint i have is that you compared blink 182 to the offspring...even that u used them in the same sentence. blink 182 is a joke, they are a mainstream punk band w/ minimal talent. the offspring has been around since the mid 80's, their lead guitarrist Noodles is easily the best punk guitarrist out there, or ever, and definately stacks up against some of the metal greats in talent. so dont go saying the offspring is "simple". listen to their Self-Titled album and see if u can still say that.
POSTED: 03/08/2004 - 04:26 pm / quote |

POSTED: 03/08/2004 - 08:48 pm / quote |

very nice. lots of good advice. the only thing that I would add is that since some of us can only read tab, try learning to read music (aka standard notation) and try some piano stuff on guitar.
POSTED: 03/08/2004 - 11:01 pm / quote |
kcor of music :
excellent article man. even if people aren't bored still a fun and informative article. we need more like these. keep it up. and rock on!
POSTED: 03/09/2004 - 10:31 am / quote |
tremontifan :
great article. how about we call you geldof the jerk? anyways, can anybody tell me what the name of this tuning is?

DADADD

i've noticed that several of creed's songs use this tuning, and it sounds really cool.

POSTED: 03/09/2004 - 12:14 pm / quote |
AngilasGuy :
^ Always does that.
Another thing I find cool is look up MIDIs online of whatever music you listen to, and get a program to read the mini in standard notation (on a staff) and you can play it easily, cause most of the time I can't find a "Yes" song book, or a "Meatloaf" song book, or even video game tunes (call me a dork, meh).

Anyway, great article man.

POSTED: 03/09/2004 - 08:07 pm / quote |
fender rocker16 :
im not bored of guitar but that article was pretty good. i noticed that a lot that stuff you said is stuff that i do haha. maybe thats why im not bored. i have been playing for i little under two years and i try new shit all the time. its amazing how much you can improve if you are not lazy. the only thing in this article that i strongly disagree with is different tuning. that is so gay. theres nuttin wrong with standard tuning. if you really wanna tune different then go get a 7 string cause thats the only time when its even close to worth it
POSTED: 03/09/2004 - 10:08 pm / quote |
fender rocker16 :
durrrhhhh "i use a vibrator".
i got a little rule to go by.
people who use vibrators, use two kinds.
yea you know what i mean haha faggot lol i bet that poor kid ran out of batteries for his giant vibrating dild... er i mean uhh nothing...

POSTED: 03/09/2004 - 10:13 pm / quote |
StratClap89 :
Great article, being bored for a guitar player is like going through pergitory. Lmao, Rocket, I dont even wanna know where your vibrator theory came from, just leave it right, there. and theog was on to something, i mean come on, that was one of the best benifits to playin guitar was the girls, which lucky for me Im still in the age where that is a benifit
(for those of us who are male guitar players of course, or maybe not just the males, it is the 90's after all, and female guitar players are becoming more and more common)

POSTED: 03/10/2004 - 12:32 am / quote |
Geldof the Grey :
^it's, ummm... not the 90s
have you travelled through time, and, if you have, why not take the lottery numbers back with you?

POSTED: 03/10/2004 - 12:55 pm / quote |
StratClap89 :
yeah i tried that, they decintigrated in my time machine man, lol, no, sorry brain lapse for a sec there, man im too young for that, ok, its beyond the 90's after all.
POSTED: 03/10/2004 - 02:19 pm / quote |
geoco_69 :
Amazing article i am actually inspired in taking myself to another level with my guitar....just to stop playing " outside" .....SIMPLY AMAZING
POSTED: 03/10/2004 - 08:03 pm / quote |

Awesome article man. So.....So..touching. Anyways before i go mushy on your ass let me ask you guyz is there any good place on the internet to learn about theory. I know the basics, but i want to learn more
Aight
Lata

POSTED: 03/10/2004 - 08:33 pm / quote |
cannonball_900 :
read the article late...man,this article rocked...and ive learnt theory, until the end...but i dont think it really helps in our playing guitar...only maybe it could spark somehting inside us to get creative again...and girls are not the reason i play guitar...im not sayin i got a lot of em...but if the world started guitarin for girls, i guess the creativity would end, wouldnt it?
POSTED: 03/11/2004 - 07:05 am / quote |
Geldof the Grey :
theory stuff: click lessons at the top of this page.

I may write a beginners article to ensuring things don't sound crap, but don't hold your breath.

wheres buy a 30cm wooden guitar from a toy shop for your freinds birthday and nick it from him and play it on stage with some maracas ducktaped to your feet?

This article made no sense. I want to think up new fun things to do, not go out and buy me a 7-string guitar. Besides bass is ten times as fun as guitar. When i'm bored of guitar (which happens pretty often) pick up a bass.
