Manage Your Attitudes

Sometimes we think that we don't have anything to do playing guitar because we play it very bad, but you know that this problem is only attitude question?. The difference of people that have success playing guitar and the people that think that can't play and give up, is that the first thinks that he could be good, maybe he have bad days and he feel frustrated but he doesn't give up, he try to find the mistakes and continues practicing, and he try to be objective.

If you want to increase your skills, there are here recommendations that you can use to train your brain and be more successfull.

01. Never think that you are a looser, if you repeat that, your brain is going to learn the things that you are repeating, it's suposse that playing guitar is a pleasure, not a mental torture. Better you try to repeat, I can, I can solve my problems, and you'll see that you level is increasing because your attitude. It's difficult to change the attitude at first because it's like neurolinguistic programmation, but you step by step will go training your brain to change the attitude.

02. Be disciplined. If you want to success you need order, it's better to practice scales 10 minutes 5 days at week than 1 hour, once at week, the time doesn't matter, the thing that matter is the discipline and order.

03. Find specific objectives. It works, when you don't have objetives you will be lazier and disordered because you don't have a goal. But if you say, I want to learn all the pentatonic scale in 3 months, you'll want to practice a lot to achieve, and if you couldn't learn all the scale, at least you have more hability that if you haven't had a goal and you will feel good with you.

04. Don't depend about the other people says about you. Normally people expect that the friend or the girlfriend told us that you are good, or maybe a friend says that you are bad. Normally this is very deceptive, because they don't know well.

For example my friends tell me that I'm good, and very fast, nobody has told me that I'm bad. But I feel that I wasn't as good as I want, and I question to my teacher, a person that knows and he told me "you still are not good guitarist, you go well, and you are learning in a correct form, but you also have defects (like any person that is learning guitar) and you still are not a good guitarist". The thing that I want to say is that you have to be autocritic and not to expect that your friends tell you that you are good, if you don't know, as me, you can question to your teacher or a person that know about it.

05. It's good that you feel that you need to practice more and you can be better, because you will try to improve and each day be a better guitarist. It's normal that you feel frustrated because always there are something that you have to improve, but without arrive to the end that you are a looser and you don't work here. Attitude question.

06. If you have a mistake, don't see that as a mistake, better you should see like and unsolved result, try to improve that and is not because you are bad.

And remember this Ayrton Senna words: "Always try to be the best, but you don't feel that you are the best."

good article. ive heard from my family that i was good. then, when i went over to my friends house to see him (bass), my other friend (who im better friends with than the bassist) (guitar), yet another friend (singer) and not really friend but still cool(drummer) practise, they made me play something. so i played some stuff on my friends guitar, and now they want me in the band. as lead (guitar). but my one friend (not in the band) said that in the beginning i sucked some ass. now he doesnt say anything.

I didn't read the article due to immense laziness but I will offer some debate, from the heading and reading the replies: if they can't keep the right attitude about playing to begin with I'd rather them not play. If you don't pick up guitar for a reason, a gut feeling, then what's the use in picking an instrument up..?

k I read the article, I'll reply more accurately The same thing applies as with my first post, if you think you suck, well.. get better. If you don't think you're bad, but everyone tells you you're horrible, you've a huge ego. And lastly, if you get what you think to be 'valid' tips from a pro, be happy, but most of them can be very stuck up. It shouldn't be that stressful. Also, if you let what other people say bother you it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that you shouldn't listen to people that know nothing about what it takes to play an instrument or haven't the good ear you develop while playing music. What this guy is saying may be needed by some of you, and by those of you who need this article, god bless your souls, people who live by other's guidelines on common sense need to take a gooooood look at their surroundings.
