Trick 1: One Hand At A Time
I often find playing stuff easier if one of my hands doing all the work. This doesn’t mean one hand has to be dead weight most of the time but keep at least what one of your hands are doing simple. When playing two notes repeatedly up and down the fret board I only move my left hand when I’m picking at a steady rhythm. Alternatively, if you’re doing a fast bit with your left hand you will find that not only is it easier to play but it often sounds better too.
Trick 2: There’s A Few Ways To Make One Chord
I find when doing chord progressions or arpeggios at speed moving all of my fingers is pretty hard to do. To avoid this you can cover two strings with one finger. Plan ahead, if you know your doing a A then a E (or a couple) the chord diagrams usually would be something along the lines of (the numbers show which finger I use for it).
e ---|---|---|---|---|
B ---|-4-|---|---|---|
G ---|-3-|---|---|---|
D ---|-2-|---|---|---|
A ---|---|---|---|---|
E ---|---|---|---|---|
then
e ---|---|---|---|---|
B ---|---|---|---|---|
G -2-|---|---|---|---|
D ---|-3-|---|---|---|
A ---|-4-|---|---|---|
E ---|---|---|---|---|
It, at some speeds could become difficult. But if you play.
e ---|---|---|---|---|
B ---|-2-|---|---|---|
G ---|-2-|---|---|---|
D ---|-2-|---|---|---|
A ---|---|---|---|---|
E ---|---|---|---|---|
then
e ---|---|---|---|---|
B ---|---|---|---|---|
G -2-|---|---|---|---|
D ---|-3-|---|---|---|
A ---|-4-|---|---|---|
E ---|---|---|---|---|
...it's significantly easier. If you’re jumping to a chord like G you can do this.
Usually:
e ---|-3-|---|---|---|
B ---|---|-4-|---|---|
G ---|-2-|---|---|---|
D ---|---|---|---|---|
A ---|---|---|---|---|
E ---|---|---|---|---|
You’ll find that putting anything behind you’re forth finger doesn’t make any difference to the sound; this means you could do this to make it easier.
e ---|-2-|---|---|---|
B ---|-2-|-4-|---|---|
G ---|-2-|---|---|---|
D ---|---|---|---|---|
A ---|---|---|---|---|
E ---|---|---|---|---|
There are also a couple of other tricks with finger positions but they all use these same ideas. The only other trick is keeping some fingers still when changing chords, for example you could do a chord then move to next not moving your 3rd finger but putting another higher up the fret board so your 3rd finger isn’t doing anything. You could also move from one chord to another leaving a finger behind on a string, but in this new chord you don’t have to play this string so it, again, doesn’t matter.
Trick 3: Un-Played Finger
This next trick was mentioned in the last one so I won’t say much about it. Play a note but have another finger on an un-played string, or behind it; this helps you get to the next bit of what you’re playing without having to do as much with your left hand.
This isn’t everything you can do, experiment, there’s loads of easy ways to do stuff if you just look.
