Story Of A Guitar Poser

So there I was in physics class one day. It was toward the end of the school year, and we had finished all the material early, so we were doing some lame electricity labs. Quite a few steps down from what we had been learning, but it was an easy grade, so it was fine. There were four of us to a table, in groups of two. My friend Keegan and I were partnered together (no gay jokes please) and, as with all high-school eleventh graders, our conversational topic drifted from the work to anything but the work.

For a plan to make a little money on the side, Keegan said he would kill me and sell my guitars on E-Bay.

“No way, man. You’re not touching my Fender. I will be buried with it.” It’s a Telecaster, and a beautiful one at that.

One of the other guys at the table looks at me and says, “Man, Fenders are gay.”

I looked at this guy, Robert. He was wearing a Fender shirt that said “Musician looking for groupies” and was sporting a belt-buckle shaped like a Fender amplifier. He looked like a freaking Fender billboard, and he called it gay.

I figured it had to be a joke. “Whatever. They rock,” I said.

- No, they suck.
- Okay…so what’s with the shirt and buckle?
- I only wear Fender because it’s the only mainstream guitar clothes.

I couldn’t believe my ears. It’s bad enough to do it, but to come out and admit why? He deserved to be crucified. From there it was just a tag-team verbal assault. 2 on 2, and we were clearly winning. This is a recap; it was a bit more in-depth than I am repeating, for I took the subject very seriously at the time.

- Fenders are awesome
- Fenders suck
- You suck.
- Fenders are the lamest ever, go and die.
- You heard the man, Keegan, whatever Robert says goes. If he says jump off a cliff, you know what to do.
- Good idea, why don’t you go jump off a cliff?
- Can I borrow one of your Fender shirts so I look cool when I’m doing it?

“Shut up,” he said to my friend Keegan, “At least I don’t play the bagpipes, you queer.” Yes Keegan plays the pipes, and no he’s not gay. Though he does wear the kilt. The point is, it is pretty sad when one insults another for the musical ability they do have.

- Do you even play guitar, Robert?
- Of course, you queer.

After he ran out of ammo, all he could say was “You’re gay, you’re gay…blah blah blah.” You know they lose when that’s all they can say.

On and on. It was rather childish, I admit, but I had to defend myself from what became a personal assault on my pride. The bell rang, and he left class angry, while Keegan and I left hoping we had done justice in the guitar world.

My friend, Tina, (also a friend of Robert) had heard both sides of the story. She has a nice Stratocaster, so guess whom she sided with? Of course she claims that fact has nothing to do with it. She had gone to his house, and as if to prove he could, played his guitar (some “cheap version of a Stratocaster” I’m told) the whole time in front of his friends. I hear he is very fluent with Nirvana songs, and pretty good with Green Day.

I also hear he wants to fight Keegan and me. We’re waiting.

You guys, the article wasn't that great, but it made a point. We have too many posers. This one group of kids I know were arguing about who had the coolest guitar (the are all posers who play guitar MAYBE once a month). They were like, my guitar is so cool, its DARK BLUE. This other girl said, "My guitar is so awesome its BRIGHT PINK!". I walked over and said "Do you guys care about anything besides the color?". A girl responded, "Well, its not like guitars are any different besides the color, anyway."

I was entertained by the humour of this. I haven't gotten around to checking out the forums to see what everyone's talking about with making it a thread (I guess there's threads for this...I dunno), so I can't complain.
However. I'm not a huge fan of Fender...I've got my friend's Squier Strat in my room right now, cuz he doesn't use it. And I broke his high E. Oops. Anyway, compared to even just my Epiphone SG, I'd take my SG. I don't much like the action, and three single coil pickups. I suppose the higher level Fenders are superior, but, that's one I don't like.
