Very nicely wirtten. In reference to suspended chords, a chord becomes suspended when one of the notes in the base chord is replaced. So the chord CFGC would be a suspended 4th, but the chord CEFGC would not be. Instead, it would be an add4 chord. Though I'd clear that up. =)

This changed my life. Thank you a lot dude. I rate this nine thumbs up. Piss coming out of my ass I finally understand chords instead of just play them because that's what I'm told.

iml84myd8 :
suspended chords are when you replace the third of the chord with the second or fourth note of the scale.
POSTED: 11/16/2007 - 10:12 pm / quote |
iml84myd8 :
and when you just add a the 2nd or 4th it is usually used in the higher octave. Usually written like: Gmaj7(add9)

D major-minor 7: xx0221

This would be D minor-major 7, not D major-minor 7. Just a small typo I expect, but thought I'd mention it.

You also don't mention the diminished 7th interval, or the diminished 7th chord. Any particular reason why?

Quite well-written, although I'm not sure how helpful it is for beginners, also I get kinda suspicious when you don't seem to know the difference between sus2/4 and add9/11.

05. Barres

With this knowledge at your fingertips, you can construct just about any chord with the roots C, A, G, E and D. There are, of course, seven other keys which need roots, and for those, you’re going to be dealing with barre chords. In case you don’t already know, barre chords refers to the technique of putting one finger across multiple strings. This is useful, and perhaps necessary, for playing hard-to-reach chords like, for example, B major.

To play a B major (B-D#-F#) in open position, you’d have to do this

Weird B: x21402

This sounds a bit rubbish, because 4 and 0 are (theoretically) the exact same note (although they will be slightly off due to tuning, string tension, timbre, etc)
shouldn't it be 3 and 0 instead of 4 and 0

^Nope. 4 and 0 is correct. 4th fret G string is B, as is the open B string, 3rd fret G string would be Bb.

Sus4 chords sound cool and open, reminds me of zelda music when u play a Esus4(x02200) 1 note at a time.

ive never cared much for theory of learning how to make chords, because quite frankly it all seems to complex and elongated, but you made it quick and easily understandable, so thanks... who knows i might even read more into this hole MUSIC thingy lol.

Thank you for the article it was very helpful. Very easy to follow and understand. I play by ear mostly but it helps to know how chords are constructed on the guitar to be able to figure out what chords I'm really playing this is helped out alot. Thank you again ReiSDaN!

self-made_page :
"Suspended" refers to how the chord sounds: it creates "suspense" by raising the third. Try playing D, then Dsus4. See how your ear wants it to fall back to D?

Excellent.

I've been playing for around two years and only after reading this article do I understand chord construction. 10/10!

Thanks!

ihatethischord :
reason why he said he doesnt know where the "suspended" comes into play is because he doesnt understand the difference between 'sus" and "add". not that he doesnt know what the sus means at all. a lot of people commented on that so i wanted to add

Uhm, we all start someplace right? Quit being an ass. I don't understand a speck of theory, but in contrats to your statement, I've been told I'm quite good at the instrument.
