colohue :
It's nice to see theory getting some attention, as it's a vital part of becoming a musician.

very good. I'm glad that somebody who clearly understands theory explained the basics.

thanks for the compliments, guys. sorry for the lack of bolded text where i indicated it would be. It's a weird process submitting these things with HTML in them.

This article is definitely one of those articles that every guitarist should read to help them be a better player and understand the importance of music.

PS: Bonus points for the ease of understanding and the good grammar . I gave this a 10.

Brilliant article man, I was entirely apathetic of music theory a long while back, and what you don't see when you're young is that it's simply another expressive tool, not a set of boundaries.

i think what i did was i copied and pasted my post from the forum, not the code behind it, so my bold text was lost. ah well... next time.

Yeah, the problem there is the tags. The forum bold tags is (mins the spaces '[ b ]' and the html bold tag is '< b >.'

It's the same with italics and underlines.

THis is exactly what I've been trying to tell people. I know so many guitar players who say they don't wanna learn theory cause "Jimi didn't learn it and I jsut wanna be free man" When all they're really doing is slowing down their own progress. And plus it makes their "improv solos" sound awful.

i remember asking a friend of mine when he plays this nice sounding but uncommon chord. i asked him, "is that a C6 chord?" and he says, "uhm, i dunno. but it really sounds good to me."

THANK YOU. This a damn nice article, and prior to it I had no idea on anything other than that I know I need and want to learn as much theory as possible. It did a very good job explaining the first bits of everything to me

thanks for giving me some perspective on theory, I always thought a little was good to know, but that the rest was for a bunch of music snobs. now I know thats not the case!

EZLN libertad :
theory is like shredding

there are people who over use it, and people who use it perfectly

there are a lot of people who slander it, but thats because they dont understand it

like i said, its like shredding, when you want the ability to play fast, you have it, just because you know theory doesnt mean you always use it

Redundant, but good. I think for the most part people are letting go of their ignorance on theory.

... not learning theory is like doing things the hard way, ON PURPOSE.

Theory is just for remembering things and how to talk with other musicians about what you do.
