I've heard that you can loop the string around the tuning peg a couple of times before putting it throught the hole is that right?
POSTED: 07/01/2005 - 10:18 am / quote |
Valterra :
Yeah. It actually preserves string life if you loop it around the tuning peg a few times before threading it through. It gives the string more grip. It also reduces the amount of times you need to re-tune.
POSTED: 07/01/2005 - 10:45 am / quote |
lEcheloNl :
hmm my guitar is different, instead of looping at all you uunscrew a screw above the peg slide the string in the screw it back in until its tight on the string

bootyguard :
I liked how you talked not only about the strat and acoustics but also floyd rose and the gibson tuneomatic style, especially since i'm considering getting an ibanez with a floyd rose. Good article, you covered many different areas with this rather than just the strat way, showing your not a lazy bum that just wanted an article on UG.

it's good, but if you wanna have it look like it comes from the factory, when u feel the tension grab, flod the string upwards, THEN turn, it makes then perfectly lined.

so I will save you the embarrassment of going to your local guitar store and saying "Can you replace my strings" and having them laugh at you while walking to the back of the store.

They're not going to laugh at you, a lot of guitarists don't like to take the time to change all of their strings all at once so they get the strings put on the guitar when they buy them. Other than that a good article.

You tried, you really did, but it's nor greatnormally you would have 3 or 4 stars, but I shall give you a 2 for this bullshit:
It may become hard on electric tuners because they aren?t used to the tinny sound

ARE YOU MAD?!?!?!? Its the same thing for a tuner they don't sense the kind of sound, just the pitch.

you didn't say which way to turn the tuner when winding the string, just a little niggle, otherwise very good.

sixstringz :
Nice, but arent you supposed to replace the strings Like one at a time E then D, A then G, B then (high)E. Ive heard that this helps avoid stressing your neck too much from all the tension being released at once and then applied again. I think this is especially true for gibson (tunamatic?) bridges. Also Ive found that if you thread the string and then wind so that the end is pinched between the winding that it helps prevent slippage, and possibly with tuning as well. Ok theres my 2 cents.

Towlie :
tomobrien : A lot of people will not have access to a local guitar shop (be it because of the lack of transport, or just the lack of a shop nearby) so the article serves a very good puropse.

Even if you are near a guitar shop, i think re-stringing your guitar is a key thing to learn yourself. Especially when you start doing gigs.

Good artcile - will help noobs to restring their guitar no problem. 5 stars.

That wasn't the way the guy who gave me lessons taught me how to put on a string, but still useful. Also, he didn't mention what you were saying about the tension stuff. So when I put new string on my acoustic for the first time by myself...Lets just say it ended with me cursing. 1. The string came back and hit my arm. 2. I didn't have anymore strings. I will gladly say that it was the first time that's happened to me and it hasn't happen since. Now that I think about it, the way I learned is actually a lot different then those. Good Article.

jamis8891 :
ok article. if you cant string your own guitar then you dont deserve to own one. if you ever have any spare money get locking tuners. they save so much time, you just pull the string through the whole and make it tight, then you twist the lock and the string is locked in. no twisting or anything. if a string breaks in a gig then it only takes seconds to replace a string

ummmm there is a RIGHT and WRONG way to change your strings so heres the RIGHT way to do it

step 1- you guys arent retarded so im gunna skip to the tuners

now lets say your changing the low E... set up the string thru the piece n shit then bring the string around to the far side of the tuner n pull. it should look like this from above-->

if you mean take them off one at at time then put them on one at a time while the others are still on, then no you dont have to do that. a lot of people do cause they think they will mess up thier neck. but a guitar neck is a piece of wood strengthened by a metal rod, its not gonna get messed up if you take off all six strings.

You should also point out that if you change string gauges on a floating trem it has to be set up again. Also, you can just put the ball end at the tuner side of the neck on a floyd rose so you don't have to cut the ball ends. Also on a floating trem if you take all the strings off the bridge will crash into the body so you have to prop it up or change strings one at a time so you don't damage your finish. I don't know why everyone gave you such a high rating for a fairly useless article that leaves out the little details which are always more important then you would think.2 stars.

There is a bit more 2 tuning a floating bridge, probably a lot more technique there than actally getting the strings on. Haggardguy is right, put the strings on a floyd upside down every time.

It's a simple thing to do really, good article. I'm suprised you need a thread to explain it. Somebody commented on breaking strings through tuning up, I've done that. My first guitar had a Floyd Rose and that's the one that used to snap like a bitch. Since then, I've had no problems restringing anything. Good work though mate.

Changing your strings? It depends on how much you play and what kind of strings. If you play once in a while I would say every 6-8 months. If you you play alot and use elixer strings I would say every three months because elixers last a while.

may have been useful to add that if your stringing a les paul style guitar then you should put them on in order E A D E B G, its a pain in the ass if you try to put them on in order of gauge. and although it is blindingly obvious, that you should leave a few inches of slack in the string when feeding through the tuning peg.

POSTED: 07/06/2006 - 04:23 pm / quote |
InfiniteMisery :
I would never take all the strings off of my guitar when re-stringing. Do it one at a time! If the A string is getting in the way when you're putting on the low E for example you could snip that off but taking them all off at once could damage the neck on some guitars.

the fendernator :
Every guitarist I know with a Floyd Rose has had the problem of the whole bridge lifting up or down if higher or lower gauge strings are fitted. Perhaps you should have included that in your article so we didn't have to spend £25 adjusting the set up to cope with heavier or lighter strings?

Same here, cept I was gonna have to wait a week for when I'm up there (still am coz I need the strings)

This was so much better than articles on other sites, I wouldn't have realised what the back panel was for on a strat otherwise yep im noob.
