The Guide To Goth Music

First things first... This article is intended to banish a few myths and explain modern day Goth, the Music and Culture. It is not open flaming for the narrowminded or plain ignorant thats what forums are for, if you are either of these, click back on your browser, and read somthing else. Though all constructive criticism is more than welcome. Moving on swiftly. Enjoy the article (Its a long read but very worth it).

Who Are The Goths?

Goth is an alternative subculture; it is both a style of music and a fashion, like Punk. People who listen to the music don't necessarily dress in the style, and people who look like goths don't necessarily like the music either - a lot of metal fans have adopted the goth look, making for a great deal of confusion.

The Goth Rock and the Goth Metal genres started around the same time, but Gothic Metal has very little in common with Goth Rock.

So What Does "Goth" Mean?

The name originally came from a Germanic tribe (The Goths). The Romans regarded them as barbaric and uncultured. "Gothic" was later applied to a style of medieval architecture by critics who regarded it as similarly barbaric and uncultured. Therefor the name Goth.

The Doors were described as being gothic rock. In 1967 which is interesting because important Goth Rock bands like Joy Division were really influenced by them.

This very important band (Joy Division for those whose attention lapsed) was called "Gothic compared to the pop mainstream" by Tony Wilson TV show on BBC in 1979. Which brings us onto the important dates of Goth music.

So what important dates do we have?

  • 1974 - David Bowie describes "Diamond Dogs" as "Gothic".
  • 1979 - Souxie and The Banshees describes their new album "Join Hands" as being gothic.
  • 1979 - Tony Wilson describes Joy Division as being Gothic compared to the pop mainstream.
  • 1982 - The fans of the Goth Rock band "Sex Gang Children" gets the name "Goths".
  • 1983-84 - Goth was a well known and growing subculture, but a lot of the big bands had split up, even Bauhaus the only band that can be called true Goth Rock had split up...
  • 1985 - Another major Goth Rock casualty as The Sisters Of Mercy split up.

Then we have the newcomers and famous "Fields Of The Nephilim" they also had the deep vocal stylings, similar to The Sisters Of Mercy... but their sound ended up far away from goth rock. At the same time The Cure were really popular amongst The Goths "Pornography" would be their most goth like cd (Although in arguement the spaced out drearyness of Disintegration comes close).

In the 1990`s with terrible covers of songs like Temple Of Love the Goth scene slowly died but still stayed quite popular in London (And still does, Camden being a Goth Hotspot amongst other things).

The punk influenced Goth was dead.

But Goth as we know it today just got born, with the power of distorted guitars, female vocals, male growling, organs (Do not misread as growling male organs) and lyrics which are/were both romantic and sad.

The 80`s Goth still exists but its strongest in the UK and Germany, but the sound will never be the same anywhere because the new Goth Rock bands are to influenced by industrial and techno. Bands like Blutengel, Wumpscut, Gothminister (from Norway), The Cruxshaddows and Icon Of Coil, are all examples of this. Though under scrutiny, these bands get classed as industrial and into other subgenres.

So the kids who hear about Goth today and get into it (including Ourselfs) get into Goth Metal bands like Type O Negative, Tristania, Theatre Of Tragedy, Sins Of Thy Beloved and many many more. Because this is the new goth style... Just like the evolution in the 70´s and 80`s.

So the New wave of Goth Metallers/Rockers if we can call it that, is really far from the roots of real goth music. Bands like H-I-M (Who are not nu-metal, to clear up the argument before it begins) and The 69 Eyes... These are Goth Rock but they are much darker then Bauhaus, Sisters Of Mercy etc...

Bauhaus and Sisters Of Mercy was actually called happy punk by some... Very strange since the stereotypical Goth today is slitting their wrists and commiting suicide.

Bands like These (HIM, Evanescence, The 69 Eyes) is just another sign that the subculture is changing into new styles and attracts young listeners to the culture so that they also can learn about Bauhaus, The Cure, Sisters Of Mecy Ect, And enjoy these old bands.

Many of these new Goth Rock bands are called Nu-Goth (like Metal and Nu-metal) by the people who are deep into goth music. The Goth Metal band "Type O Negative" have a song called "We Hate Everyone" and the lyrics are a mockery of the people who are narrowminded, judging Goths and Metallers, You can check the lyrics here.

Thus ending our history of Gothic Rock and Metal, Proceed to read if you want some good recommendations of what to listen for. (The layout is Band: Song).

this is pretty nice. finally someone covered the truth. although i really think bands like HIM and evanescence need to stop being sellouts/poser and just make some better music. but no, they're just gonna go on with their "origincal 'love metal'" or rant about how "depressed" they are or how they want to kill pop icons, when in fact they too are pop icons. i wish the days old days were back.

Very good but too short. I would have liked more on the lifestyle of people who support goth music / culure. Are there any typical professions that that goths like to have (like art teacher or something maybe) or do they prefer certain kinds of animals for pets and stuff like that. I really like that you make a distinction between people who dress in goth culture and those who listen to goth music, good call.

Yes, good article. Very well made and understandable for those who hear a bit Goth Metal (Tristania) and want to hear more about the genre. The genre Nu-Goth sounds funny .

Now that I've read the article, I shall conclude that it is well written and well researched (though the Sisters of Mercy are still around playing small Vegas clubs) and I have voted a 5-star for it. But my previous point still stands. (I should also mention that the connection between the Goths, Gothic architecture, and the "subculture" of today is very loose).

I can't really say you answered the question "What does "Goth" mean?". You could have described Gothic fashion and also how they are in person, to make the article a little more interesting.
All in all, this is a very good article, keep it up!

Anyway, that was a good and informative article. Although I am a little disappointed that there were no mentions of Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle. i have to say, i hate goth music etc but i do respect it and them, this is a good article. People are too narrow minded. people i know see them as thick stupid wierdos but they are clever articulate people with a "different" sense of fashion. I do have to say tho, i absolutely hate pseudo goths - the teenagers whu dress like them and listen to it to be "individual" and smoke weed cos of the image it gives them. they have no idea what a goth is and should be shot. Dont they realise that you can be a goth and individual cos being a goth would make you part of a growing culture so there are more that 1! i hate those people.

Lymbe - The guitarist is the one who made the changes. The thing that drove him to quit was Amy saying she didn't like the changes HE made to the songs because it made her feel like a sell-out, and she gave him a lot of shit for turning them into something too commercial.

i listen to most of the bands posted up there but i dont exactly consider them and/or myself goth (and most wouldnt) but goth (if you must use the term) is very misunderstood. Its not about the hating the world sh*t, its about theatrics, musical experimentation and dark (often romantic) lyrics. To the writers: thanks for giving those bands the recognition they deserve.

i listen to most of the bands posted up there but i dont exactly consider them and/or myself goth (and most wouldnt) but goth (if you must use the term) is very misunderstood. Its not about the hating the world sh*t, its about theatrics, musical experimentation and dark (often romantic) lyrics. To the writers: thanks for giving those bands the recognition they deserve.

Theatrics? Not to sure 'bout that one. Goth is a type of music. Gothic is an Architecture and Art, and like the article mentioned, the Germanic Tribes.
Take note though that the Germanic Tribes were long ago.

it's nice to see the nephilim mentioned in any aspect...the nephilim were vastly influential to my own development as a musician as well as my evolving trek within this mortal coil... combining influences as diverse as summerian fertility rites and william burroughs with the darker side of kabbalistic mysticism created a unique flavor of london goth with western apocalyptica... carl mccoy gleefully treaded the dark fantastic along the fringes of insanity to bring back painfully beautiful glimpses of a universe seldom seen by others than Lovecraft's inner circle...look inside peeps, there is a manifold universe waiting for the psychonauts of tomorrow... be bold... dare to tread where the angels fear... let us celebrate for our lesser days... thanks mr mccoy... shao fu

I'm going to go ahead and have to disagree with you about your comment of Gothic architecture being considered barbaric. It was actually a big step in architechture since the Fall of Rome based on the fact that such a massive structure could be erected and supported with so few interior columns. The structural support came from the use of arches and other comparatively modern structures such as flying buttresses. Other than that, A+ on the article.

I freaken hate it when people think that a band sucks because it has gone pop. pop is short for popular, and there is a reason they are P o p u l a r, its because they are noticed by other people and are enjoyed, it might even be because they simply are good. I hate it when people hate bands because the band has become popular. It does not mean that they sold out, cause wouldn't you rather get paid good money for playing a show instead of living in a trashy place and not getting really any money in the name of "not selling out" (I do agree that some people do see out but, thats still a really small number). So just because someone has been found and becomes big doesnt mean that they have changed or anything. And for those of you who do not want to see a band progress in thier style because you feel that they are "leaving thier roots" you are full of it. progression leads to profection, and is a healthy path for a band to take, that way the song you wrote when you first started out doesnt sound like something you write now.

    An80sAbortion wrote on 01/26/2005 - 02:46 pm / quote |

I'll join you in disagreeing that it is barbaric, but when it first started appearing that is what people saw it as, not all of course, but still... It is however very beautiful...

Manson's music isn't goth, although it certainly has elements of it, and he loves and is influenced by Bowie and Bauhaus. His music is more of an industrial persuasion, and at least a mention of him would have been appreciated, otherwise a very nice effort... Typing makes everything so difficult, but it's even worse when people can't keep an open mind about other people's opinions. There's more under the surface than what everyone seems to think. A lot of people are "gothic," but they aren't depressed at all. There are all kinds of different people under every label.

I also can get incredibly confused by all these sub-genre things, and have been called a hippie and a goth in the space of about 3minutes which really doesn't make sense, and now I'm getting told that I watch goth-movies. The second one was better. This one ***ing sucked. H.I.M. is the shit but they are NOT Goth as many people seem to think. Evanescence is NOT Goth, also as many people think. They are pop music. That's all they are, and all they will be. They think they are Goth. They call themselves Goth. That does not make them Goth.
But, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, and Bauhaus are awesome Goth bands. Good job on that part. I applaud you for that. My sister is a true Goth, trust me, she isn't a poser, but she heard Joy Division and didn't think it was Goth. They were moreso Goth that evolved from punk. She's more into Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy stuff. Kay.

Very good article for the most part but I do have some conflicts in believing Evanescence would be considered a goth band especially when I went to High School with Amy Lee..she was always wanting attention from everyone even though nobody knew who she was hardly. Plus she had a rotten personality..I don't mean to insult your judgement but to each their own I suppose. There is also a part of us that you didn't mention. The ones in our culture that embrace black metal as a big part of our lives. There are about 20 or 30 goths in my city that listen to goth/black metal such as Graveworm. We also embrace Darkthrone, Satyricon, Immortal, and some death metal bands exp: Kataklysm, Napalm Death, and such. Oh yeah. Look for a goth rock act liked Deathstars. www.deathstars.net They are very interesting. They all came from black metal bands.

I really enjoyed reading the article even those who are goths define themselves individually and are separate identities from those near them. However they still belong to a group that recognizes and neccessitates a need to create "the other" or group to feel separate from in order to affirm themselves culturally. I thought the band named Satyricon sounded pretty damn hilarious, for anyone who has ever read the Satyricon by Petronius. Petronius was a Roman noble who exploited the poor just like every other Roman noble and was one of Nero's dogs of opulence. It's funny that a band that would assume a more Marxist stance on its lyrics by being Gothic wouldn't associate itself with injustice, inequality and the general exploitation of the populace perpetuated by Petronius and other Roman Empire pigs. If half of all Goths knew anything about the cultures they're trying to emulate and romanticize, their modern mouths would spew puke at the conditions of Victorian England or Nero's Roman Empire. Anyways, a good article on Gothic culture can be found at http://www.religioustolerance.org/goth.htm if we're talkling about culture, but since we're probably talking about music more, rock on...just love the irony found in Gothic culture, had to comment...can't wait to hear you all tear me a new one

If you can answer that at least 10 of these statements
are true about yourself, then you are VERY likely to be a goth.Keep in mind however, if you say no to the
1st one you are not. Even if you said yes to all the others.

-You feel the need to spend a lot of time creating things (music, art, poetry, philosophies, stories and the like)
-Your creative efforts are often described as dark, shocking, scary, morbid or strange
-You like museums and cultural centers
-You understand and even enjoy Shakespeare, Shelley, Browning or some other similar work without having to read the Cliffe Notes
-You know the difference between nihilism and existentialism, even if you don't really live by either
-You really, truly enjoy music of many kinds
-You are a very sensual person (aware of color, texture, sound, taste and scent)
-You don't understand why the people around you spend so much time watching TV
-You don't feel comfortable looking just like everyone else you know
-You do feel comfortable just being yourself, even if no one else around is anything like you
-You wonder "why" a lot, and come up with some interesting answers
-You wonder "how" a lot, and often figure it out on your own
-You don't just reject something because you don't understand it
-You base your opinions of people on who they are and what they do rather than what they look like
-You are not afraid of the unknown
-You are not afraid of the dark
    -You are afraid of mediocrity

I'm going to go ahead and have to disagree with you about your comment of Gothic architecture being considered barbaric. It was actually a big step in architechture since the Fall of Rome based on the fact that such a massive structure could be erected and supported with so few interior columns. The structural support came from the use of arches and other comparatively modern structures such as flying buttresses. Other than that, A+ on the article.

Back when Gothic architecture was developed, it was considered barbaric and plain. It was named after the Visigoth tribe, who were barbarians.

This article starts off nicely with its information about the early bands, but Evanescence, Jack off Jill, Lacuna Coil, Cradle of Filth, etc. really have very little to do with the genre and subculture. Same with the industrial/EBM/future-pop acts you mentioned - again, that connects to a different, although related subculture.

To describe the 90s goth music scene, the article should instead be mentioning bands such as Rosetta Stone, Children on Stun and Vendemmian (for the UK scene), London After Midnight (for the American scene) and even bands like Switchblade Symphony if we are to cover more darkwave stuff, and the Projekt label for ethereal. Heading back to goth rock, in Europe there was excellent music coming from the likes of Corpus Delicti, and Clan of Xymox were still doing their great fusion of goth rock song structures with more electronic elements.

For the 2000s, the article should talk about the 'deathrock revival' where people went crazy for fishnets and deathhawks and bands like Cinema Strange, Chants of Maldoror and Murder at the Registry were on everyone's lips. Later on in the UK we also saw a lot of members of 90s goth bands start up again - Grooving in Green, The Eden House, etc.

Really guys, nice start, but you get confused about what happened to goth - it didn't morph into metal. Some metal in the 90s seems to have taken aspects of goth fashion and the so called 'attitude' or 'aesthetic' (I'd say very little from the music, actually, other than Eldritchesque vocals coming from Type O' Negative and Paradise Lost), but goths didn't turn into metalheads because of it - they had their own music scene going on. Hope this helps to clarify, and that this might inspire a few of you to check out some of the bands I mentioned.
