getting the singer as close to the mic as possible isn't a great idea (being closer isn't going to make you sound better), that action can really distort the singers tone, when you clasp your hand around the mic stick out your thumb and don't get any closer than that. Plus once you are more experienced with your voice you will know how to work the mic, especially if you are a loud singer.

If you are all ego the laws of nature will make you sound rubbish, and that’s how it should be.

Yes sir, that is correct.

It's surprising how something that seems so simple can actually be quite complex. Because of the physics of sound moving closer to the mic changes the tonal balance and you'll need to adjust your tone controls to get this back. Every mic is different in this respect too. The shure sm58 works better than the sm57 for close miking for example. The thumbs distance is a great piece of advice. I try to get inexperienced singers to keep a fingers thickness back from the mic. This merits a whole article though.

One thing I always recomend is for a 1 st time through a PA system is for the band to practice with the system at gig volume. It can be distracting to the misicans when they play when the PA moves their sound from where thy are used to hearing it come from.

Henry Rollins. He claims to put the 'punk' in 'punctual.'
