You can also use your 1st finger to touch a spot on the string while you pick using your 2nd finger and thumb. A little awkward at first, but I find its easy to get good, full sounding artificial harmonics this way. Requires a little dexterity in switching the pick between your 1st and 2nd finger.

Didn't you already do an article in Lessons about harmonics? Almost looks like the same info...good article nonetheless...

Yes I did, I even said so in this article's introduction... this one has been revamped entirely, though, with better explanations and clearer examples, and pictures to accompany.

Cheers!

I do my harmonics very different than any way posted here, but it still works very good, especially on the higher strings. The lower are a little more tricky, but here's how I do it:

I place my middle finger next to the (index)finger that holds my pick, and on the lower side of my thumb. Then when i pick the string i use the piece of skin below the nail of my middlefinger, or the nail itself, to touch the string i just picked, making a harmonic. Try it out!

A killer in depth lesson! I have a great handle on pinch harmonics, but have never done the palm technique. I will definitely be trying that one today!

Awesome lesson, I like the Steve Vai examples but you should have mentioned another Van Halen song since you're talking about harmonics, like Women in Love or something.

Brilliant article, very useful indeed. You could have toned down on the exclamation marks... But I think I'll overlook that.

Another technique for tap harmonics is to whack your tapping finger down directly on the metal fret that has a node (i.e. fret the 7th fret, whack the 19th fret, or 12th or 14th). You don't need to pluck beforehand and you can combine it with the legato runs in your last article to create some cool effects.

Erik Mongrain does this a lot, in his laptapping technique:

Haha now I get how to find the nodes when I'm fretting.... so much simpler then I thought.

I also like the tap method :3 really simple and easy to pull off (I just attack near where I'm about to tap)

Thanks again ZeG for another great lesson.

(You outdid yourself. lol)

Many thanks for this article It was clear and helpful. Now I actually managed to use the pinch technique Before this, I've always used the palm method :S I find it pretty hard to do pinches with thumb in a fast lick though :S

cool i didnt realize in order to do a good pinch harmonic you have to have your hand in a certain spot. thanks

My fav technique, prob my signature(on 5-string distorted bass) solo technique is to do a run, and at the end, drop down about an octave from my target note, and tap a Harmonic, then slide back up to my target note. If done properly, the fundamental slides up, while the sounded harmonic remains largely unchanged. If I then sustain the octave of the fundamental, it screams, kinda my ghetto Dimebag Squeal for bass (one of many harmonic techniques not covered here). If I go ahead or behind the octave of the fundamental, I get a dissonance to ring with the harmonic, causing mass chaos, mosh pits, and blown eardrums. It also makes church people cry, police run in fear, and it kills babies within a mile range. Use this technique with extreme caution. And if anyone asks where u got it,

Palm and tapped harmonics? Until now I'd never heard of them! I've even picked up better ways (and the names!) of the harmonics I already knew about, from reading this article. Great work!

Well first off, I've been following all of these lessons since the first one, and I have to say that I'm greatly appreciate them.
Second, I have a question, because some of these technique lessons scare me... especially harmonics. I've read your past article on them, and I know what they are and how to do them, but I just can't do them.
I've used the tapping technique ( because it's the only one I can execute "correctly"), but it seems like the sound is VERY quiet, even with an amp.
And if I even attempt to do pinch harmonics, no matter how slow and softly I try, the string just completely mutes.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Probably you are leaving large chunk of pick coming out from your thumb. Dont leave more than 3 mm of the surface area of the pick to strike the strings.

Hope this helps

Thanks for these lessons. I already know a lot of this stuff, but it definetely helps me understand it better. Plus i could never properly execute a pinch harmonic, and now I can! Thanks bro.

I do my harmonics by picking the string normally but my having my pinkie slightly touching that string at the same time..it works well.

How does semi-harmonics fit into this? I read somewhere and viewed a clip where you can apply a semi-harmonic to a bend and it gives it the fundamental sound and the higher pitched sound to really make the bend sound brutal. If you search Zakk Wyld's Farewell ballad on youtube, he uses the technique. So... whats the technique behind that?

Semi-harmonics are simply harmonics in which you don't mute the fundamental completely. So, you just don't press down hard enough on the string to completely kill the fundamental and you have yourself a semi-harmonic!

for some songs like "nights sorrow" by Becoming the Archetype I use my 1st finger 12 frets above the note of a chord and pluck with my thumb in a single motion. it works well when using harmonics to play appegios of chords and stuff in songs without picks

Yes this is awesome. I've kinda knew how to do harmonics but I never knew the music theory behind them or the nodes.

Ya, i had a guitarist named carl tosten jam with me, and he taught me a lot of cool harmonic stuff using right hand taps (without plucking the string, like fuzzle wrote). one of the cool things i learned was forming chords with your left hand, then tapping out harmonic arppegios.
