Any outside influence from what you're trying to achieve always helps.
I'm not saying that you have to merge styles, but by learning certain techniques of a genre (cross-picking, muted powerchords, dynamic/volume swells) and different ways to accent/phrase said techniques, you can create anything your mind desires.
