Currently, my mic "has a cold" but when I get a new one or something, I'll post some of my shit.

As for whoever asked when the peak of shred was, as far as I can tell, somewhere in the 80's, and even the beginning of the 90's. Shred, musically and especially technically, has always been above most other genres/styles, and shred artists could easily become proficient in any other style if they chose to.

Master Of Shred

it was the end of becker. the beginning of Vai's solo stuff and Dream Theater :D

the whole nps thing comes from the fact its an irrefutable measure of skill.
Let me demonstrate - you argue with someone over whos more melodic - how can you ever agree? Its opinion.
Speed is not an opinion. You are fast. And you can quantify it.

But then again, speed is overrated. I love frusciante. Fareri can eat my shorts.

How long did it take you to compose your Vai-like track? The beginning seemed like it needed some compression, but then settled down to a nice steady volume.
Jinglejazz was pretty neat as well.

Probably Yngwie tried to speak english and he though that shred was some kinda normal english word at the time

Mad Marius
03-08-2005, 03:50 PM
Maybe it's from the sheer speed of shred artists. They play so fast it seems they're literally "shredding" the guitar. Just an assumption...

IgnoreThis
03-08-2005, 05:02 PM
^Maybe, or, even though this sounds stupid, it might be to do with the strings being 'shredded' or breaking.

Is it true that in the US OTT shred solos are called wanking? I've heard something about that...

YouKnowYourRite

SilentDeftone

Guitar wanking is playing fast because you can. The verb 'wank' means to "self-pleasure". It's from the UK. Make the connection?

Freepower
03-08-2005, 06:52 PM
Its also a noun, as in "All scallies are wanks", or can be used in the form of a verb - "Go wank yourself".

And as far as guitar wanking goes, it should be done in private, and never in public. And NEVER recorded and sold to the masses.

^^ same thing as echo. Where what you play is repeated back several times before it dies out. You can ajust the distance between echoes. short, long ect.

And for my chat topic, how old was becker when he started playing. I've been playing 2 1/2 years and I'm 15 and am about 3 minutes through SMS, but he was 17 at the time, and a far superior guitarist to me now. I always compare myself to others. It's a bad habit.

The speed. Yes. Thats all.
I just enjoyed playing seriously fast rythym guitar for the past year and then i believe I saw a malmsteen video and thought "I can pick that fast" and then found myself severly wrong, but intruiged by the speed.
Now, as im learning lead, im appreciating shred a little more - cant say i'd ever be a shredder, but i certainly appreciate what they do. And i like the principles of certain shred techniques, if not their use in shred. So im going to steal them!

But if anything will actually get me into shred, its gonna be rusty.

kyle_afi
03-09-2005, 04:18 PM
I had heard about Vai and Satch, but never heard their stuff, so I bought a G3 dvd. I really liked it a lot. I also saw speed lives and though "I'm gonna play like that". That was about 2 months ago. I have no idea who some of these shred artists you guys talk about are, because I'm new to shred. The main reason I like shred is because I know it is the genre that is guitar based and involves the most technique.

evidently. if you played the C major scale over 2 octaves, in 16th notes, followed it up by a simple Am sextuplet sweep, and the played a Dm pentatonic lick all at a nice and respectable 170-200 bpm, it'd be considered shredding... basically shred guitar doesn't demand you use any partickler scale or such, it's a style of guitar playing not a genre.

Random question do any of you shred in alternate tunings?

Freepower
03-11-2005, 05:19 PM
i dont shred, but i like to play with my low E tuned to the key of the piece. BADGBE has lead to great stuff. I once used straight 4ths as well, because i accidently tuned it wrong (at about one month, lol). I use Drop D a lot, and honestly, most people bashing drop D hate it because they dont understand it.
My favourite odd tuning however, is my out of tune minature guitar - its plastic, cost 50p at a school sale, and has a total range of four and a half steps, from low E to open high E. Its a great exercise to work with a untuned guitar and get something good sounding out of it. And no, it cant physically BE tuned.
I dont think many shredders will shred in altered tunings - its too much for their feeble minds to work out EVERY arpeggio and scale all over again.
Lol, basically, they need practice in them...

Heh...heh....sorry. had to.
And Harmonic minor. Still working on shredding with that though...haven't gotten to the point where it sounds good with shred.
Sorry, I have to point out that what I play is rarely "shred," as in Cooley or Becker, I play more of the instrumental virtuoso style of "shred." So for straight of shredding, AKA cool sounding scale running ;-), I like Chromatic and Dorian. You can get some REALLY cool sounds out of Chromatic, jazzy stuff, indian stuff...just gotta play random notes, and then remember em if they sound good, and reuse those licks!

Ok question: What the hell is that thing that Angelo does on Speed lives when he starts waving his hand around in air and
pokes the fretboard every once in a while?

im as good as Vai at improv. :)

nah, but i presume you mean improv shred solos - hard as **** - unless you want to sound like a scales exercise.

Otherwise, just play all your technique exercises ever, really fast.

But improving in general is easy, its 9/10 of what i do to come up with stuff.

its one of his tricks called the "over-under", basically he moves his hand and hits notes with his hand below the fretboard, then hits a note with his hand above the fretboard...if that helps

Well, do what I did, get an RG 1550/1570 and change the pickups... I don't get why people buy 2550's and the like... There is no improvement part from the pickups, and it costs way more... And you're going to replace the pickups anyway...

Does the 1570 really need a pick-up change?

Remeber... I'm not as serious, technical, or indeed knowlegeable as you lot, and therefore I'm expecting the stock pick-ups to do me fine...

Well, most of us won't be satisfied with ANY stock pickups (or non-dimarzio's ;) )

But the stock pickups on the 1550/1570 are pretty good for stock pickups... So no, you don't really need to change them, its just advisable.

I dunno, I just get discouraged; it's just the way my mind interprets it.

Although I DO practice, and I DO try to develop. I'm just trying to get to a level where I won't feel inferior when listening to someone else's music.

But I don't know, practicing doesn't work for me... I stopped practicing sweeps for like a week or two and then I come back, and I can somehow play the sweeps from Speed Lives... wtf?

Anyways, yea, I just take it in stride. My mind is intrinsically pessimistic, some players encourage me, and some discourage me. I don't feel sorry for myself or anything though lol, it's just the way it is.

But when I come across a player that's been playing for 1.7 years it's like "... SHIT, why the fuck can't *I* see those results" lol. :p: ;)

Dreadnought

Never helped me at all lol.

Although, it'd probably help, not necessarily in your technique, but in the way your brain remembers the fingerings and such.

Freepower
03-13-2005, 12:31 PM
it helps you develop the basic muscle for things, but not the co-ordination - example, i used to find picking witht he wrist really hard, i just didnt have the muscle, was my assumption, considering i use my arm, so i now sit and swivel my wrist through the air (dont do it with your hands in your pocket btw ;)) and i've seen great improvements in my wrist speed.

EDIT : Psssssssssst, dready, Resi has played piano for years - thus, his composition-ing, theory and finger strength had been developed for years. And he practices, i assume.

hah, not only are you sigged, but i own you at tapping...*ahem*...tapping.....

Tapping rules, but then again, so does classical - i'll stick with tapping, im up to 3 fingers right hand, generally arpeggios. You can create delay effects without a delay pedal if you layer two different voicings of the same chord - eg, tap D minor on the tenth fret voicing on the high E and on the 5th fret.

Who am i to give guitar lessons, lol....

while i was joggin today, i kinda thought up this idea for UG.

why dont we make *The UG Shred Theme Song 2005*?
everyone that participates in the shred forum could contribute small bits and peices of music , and we could collaborate it into a song. so someone writes an intro, attaches the powertab (this is all done threw powertab btw) and puts it in the *The UG Shred Theme Song 2005 Thread* and let the adding on begin. then people just add more and more until the song comes to a close. at the end, someone can record it and whoopdee do, we have a theme song. :) what do you guys think? its kinda farfetched but i think we could do it. kinda liek a collage of music.

I'm just learning how to play guitar, ever since I've started to play my music taste has changed tremendously. Right now I'm just getting in DT and I think it's great. It'd be cool to learn how to shred but I have a Gibson LP double cut(got it for $300 used), which doesn't seem to be the top choice for all you shredders. ;) What guitars are good for shredding and what makes the Gibsons so much worse then the them? Also, what would you guys suggest for me to practice if I want to try to learn to shred? Thanks!

Gibsons arnt bad for shreding just look at Zakk Wlyde He can shred just as good as most people on a a stratocaster but the gibson is bigger and heavier than most shreders can handle. I would sugest a Ibens or a Jackson for shreding

What shredding technique do you guys have the most trouble with? I'm really strong with legato and sweeping, but I suck at tapping and am substandard at alternate picking the runs that I can play with legato.

I suck at tapping, cause the best I can do is 4 finger tapping. Legato is also quite bad. I can do some 5 string sweeps, but not well. I say alternate picking is my forte.

There are Evolution PU's for neck and bridge position. The bridge pickup has more mids, whereas in neck pick-up the tone is more balanced, but it has slightly more treble.

RULES AND HELPFULL SITES

Important rule :

Noobs are welcome in here, with questions about shred, no stupid lines like : 'slash is 10 times as fast as angelo' so don't flame the ones with questions... or I will report you...

www.vai.com
www.angelo.com
www.dreamtheater.net
www.vinniemoore.com
www.bucketheadland.com
www.satriani.com
www.jasonbecker.com
www.shawnlane.com

www.joestump.com
www.yngwie.org
www.ericjohnson.com

some exercise sites :

www.insaneguitar.com
www.theshredzone.com
www.chopsfromhell.com

ALWAYS PRACTISE WITH A METRONOME.

Some tab sites :

http://www.jbakerman.com/trans/ ( vai tabs new album )
www.powertabs.net
www.mysongbook.com
www.mxtabs.net
www.ultimate-guitar.com
http://yngwie.org/music/scripts.html ( yngwie tabs )

Another important rule :

Don't call names at eachother when people say things like : "dude michael angelo sucks, he's just based on speed and doesn't play with feeling at all " . that's his/her opinion, respect it. obviously you can tell him/her that you've an other opinion but that doesn't mean he's some stupid ****ing retarded mother****er or something like that. if I see disrespecting posts like that I will report you, again.
