I know a drummer, who is currently unemployed, so I think I'm gonna try and spend more time w/ him. Before I couldn't because he had a demanding job. I need him, and he needs me, lol. I'll get hoss better and so will he if we each have something to work with.

Plus, his amp >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> mine.

Quite good actually. He's more metal based, but he can pull out some pretty good beats. He's still got a way to go though. He usually plays pretty simple stuff, but he's pretty good at double bass and fast playing too.

Edit- He plays simple, fast, metally stuff. Like Dave Lombardo on horse tranqulizers.

They've got a thing at our school in the spring that I'm pending. It's an outdoor concert where the school band plays, then anyone else or their band can play. I'm thinking about seeing if I can borrow Matt's (drummer guy) amp and just jamming off to the side. It's a 100 watt Marshall that sounds great. I'll just chill out on the side and jam and if anyone wants to see my 1337 skills (not really...:() they can come over and check it out.

i cant figure out nps

(Beats per minute/60) times (notes/4)

160 bpm at 16th notes:

(160/60) times (16/4) = 10.66667 nps

300 bpm at 32 notes

(300/60) times (32/4)= 40 nps.

random examples ^.

etc. :)

Edit:

**** FOO! Golbez just uploaded Raspberry Jam's for me, and it is nothing like I've ever heard from Becker. Seriously good jazz/rock jams on it. I love it. I'll upload it for you guys later.

chase09
01-21-2006, 05:59 PM
i figured mine out by recording myself on a 1 minute time limit and then going back and counting how many times i performed the sweep. since the sweep in its entirety consists of 6 notes, i then took the number of times it was performed cleanly, multiplied it by 6, then divided by 60. if i messed up during the sweep then i didn't count it because it would be too controversial then. so i guess it COULD be a little higher, but 12.8 is good enough for me considering i've only played about 7 months

Sorry, im a n00b when it comes to that stuff.

THAT, I don't know, and I don't really do myself. That, my explanation, was for how to calculate the nps of a song from powertabs or gp4. One way you could do it I guess would be to play a song at the same speed as a pt/gp4 file. You would just be playing the same nps as the powertab would be. Or yah, you could take 10 seconds, play as many notes as you can. Find out how many notes you played, then divide it by 10.

pavan
01-21-2006, 07:24 PM
or set your metronome to 60bpm and figure out how many notes you had played in that one second between the beats.

its not really important this nps thing.

What are some good virtuoso tunes that are kind of melody-driven, or riff-like?

apocalypse13
01-23-2006, 07:58 PM
Ok. I'll help.

But can you clarify what you mean by that? I'd be glad to help.

Some extremely melodic songs:

Jason Becker- Altitudes
Marty Friedman- Dragon Mistress
Racer X- Technical Difficulties
Steve Vai- For the Love of God
Buckethead- Too Many Humans
Joe Satriani- Always With Me Always With You
Yngwie Malmsteen- Icarus Dream Suite

Riff Driven:
Racer X- Technical Difficulties
Marty Friedman- Gimme a Dose
Steve Vai- The Attitude Song
Buckethead- Welcome to Bucketheadland
Joe Satriani- Satch Boogie
Cacophony (Marty and Jason)- Concerto
Yngwie Malmsteen- Black Star

Alright, there's some examples from a few different guitarists. Here's some quitessential shred tracks imo:

Micheal Angelo Batio- No Boundaries
Rusty Cooley- Under the Influence
Cacophony- Speed Metal Symphony
Racer X- Technical Difficulties
Steve Vai- The Attitude Song
Buckethead- Nottingham Lace
Yngwie Malmsteen- Black Star

Technical Difficulties is a must-hear for any shred fan.

For future reference, most people in this forum are pretty damn tired of threads with noobs either bitching, or talking about how Slash is god. So that's why we didn't take lightly to your thread. ;)

Edit- I forgot Yngwie! :bonk:

November_Rain88
01-23-2006, 08:11 PM
I dunno, I tend to enjoy riffs a little more than speed. I.E. Jimmy Page or Tony Iommi's style of playing as opposed to like Yngwie or Rhodes. I heard Friedman is the most diverse of the shredders, but I haven't heard much by him.

Erc

Uhh any good one will have a melody in them. Get You Back by Shawn Lane is kick ass. Mediterranean Sundance by Al Di Meola is awe inspiring, the Satch Boogie is an all time favorite. Under the Influence by Rusty Cooley is incredibly catchy, Technical Difficulties and Scarified are great tracks by Racer X (Paul Gilbert).

Yea uh check those out, they are just some appetizers from those artists.

The only reason I'd tune down is to
1.Use a lower note
2.On an acoustic for different harmonics

other than that I agree that theres really no limit to the stuff you can do with standard.

Freepower
01-28-2006, 09:24 AM
Depends how big your hands are...

But really, there are limits to what you can do with standard, that dont extend merely to harmonics. Like how much easier 4nps is if you have your guitar tuned to 5ths, for example. Let alone chord voicings.

And then symmetrical scales get a lot easier when you can play in straight 4ths...

Pah. You guys just dont want to have to relearn your precious patterns. :(

I can't use alternate tunings unless I change my string size. Well I guess I could, but the bridge would pull back a whole bunch. Sometimes I drop D. I've been down to a drop A on my acoustic before. I could only do it because I have ridiculously heavy strings on it (13's, and I want lighter ones.)
