Well I got to thinking today, as I sat in Trigonometry learning the wonders of sine and cosine, about UG. After laughing at the fond memories I have of the Axegrinder/jasonbecker Yngwie arguments, the Freepower/Leevai NPS arguments, and...Resi, I had an epiphany: I came to realize how UG has influenced my playing -- even what kind of music I listen to.
Before I joined UG, I was your typical nu-metal fan, never heard of Vai or Satch, and had no idea what an RG was. When I finally got a guitar and started into the wonderful world of shred and prog, I joined UG.
So as I was studying hard in class, a question popped into my mind, like a little gopher, peeking its head above the ground: Where would you be without UG? I thought of making a thread on this but...well I don't want to. So I ask you, my shreddy pals, how has UG developed you as a musician?
For me, I would probably have given up on the guitar after hacking my way through Stairway a few times. I never would have been concerned with technique, I'd just want to learn a few songs and call it a day. And I NEVER would know of Lane or Becker or Eklundh, or 99% of what I listen to today.
So I'll ask again, because I know some of you have horribly short attention spans:
Where would you be without UG?

Excellent question snowball! *sobs*
Ok, without UG, my music tastes may be different, but they'd still be similar to what they are now. I got into Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, and Megadeth through friends, so I like to think I would have eventually gotten into shred. Considering also, I listened to a few Ozzy CDs my sister had, I sorta got into him myself. Also, after I had heard a bit of Randy Rhoads and Marty Friedman, I was instantly hooked. I had been a fan of the two before UG, and it's no coincidence that they're still my two favorite guitarists of all time. They are, and I forsee them to always be right there next to each other.
Before I got into metal, I was into a mix of oldies, nu metal, and rap. Oldies mainly being Pink Floyd, who I still admire. Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, and Metallica pushed me deeper away from mainstream. I was into Metallica from stuff on the radio. These bands led me to "Greatest Guitar Solo List" searches on google, and I found www.digitaldreamdoor.com
This site got me more into Hammett, sending me into a Metallica downloading frenzy, to hear his "face-melters." However, on these sites were names like "Steve Vai" and "Yngwie Malmsteen." "Who were these strange characters," I wondered? I saw they were high on the lists, and figured they must be good, at least worth a download on Kazaa. So I downloaded For the Love of God. I listened, and thought, "Meh, this is too soft and slow, I don't like." Over time however, I became more drawn to this mysterious side of guitar playing. I downloaded Metal Dog. Then I was hooked. My journey into shred had begun, and then I got itunes during the Pepsi free download frenzy. One of the first songs? Black Star. Then, I'm like, "OMFG this kicks ass!"
From there, I just kept going, found UG, left noobiness, and now, I'm a full blown shred fan. Writing this brought up another interesting thought, but I'm not going to steal Snowball's moment, he's got a great question. However, remind me in a few days in case I forget. It's sad and maybe not one to look forward to, but still a fact of life, and something we all will face.

Yah, for me, there was one of those "Hardest Guitar Solo's" thread.
Someone said:
Easy-!@#!#*Insert some green day song*
Medium-Stairway To Heaven
Hard-Black Star.
I was like? WTF? STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN IS MEDIUM! WTF h4x! At that time Stairway seemed basically impossible to play to me, and those now slow pentatonics were out of reach of my technical abilities. So out of curiousity I searched Black Star, came upon Yngwie, then on his website there was him playing a song "Live." So I decided to check it out. It turned out to be the full length clip of him playing Baroque and Roll from the G3 video. Seriously my eyes popped out of my head. I must have watched this video over 20 times nonstop. Kept coming back for more shred after that. :)
Burn has heard this story three times I think. :o
:p:
Uh...well before UG I listened to almost the same stuff, excluding a lot of the neo-classical and jazz/fusion stuff I listen to now, also less prog.
So yea before UG I listened to bands like Metallica, Opeth, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Iron Maiden, Bob Marley (still listen to all these bands). And well now its just expanded into more stuff like Lane, Howe, Al Di Meola, De Lucia, DT, Evergrey, King Crimson, Becker, Yngwie, Vinnie Moore etc. etc. etc. lots more don't feel like listing them all.
Oh and I also wouldn't be nearly as good on guitar ^_^. I have to thank FP for the majority of my not horrid techinque (not good but way better then it would be). Oh and I would still probably be the dumbass saying...
"Blues is about phrasing, shred is about technique."...man did Resi chew my ass off for that back when I first came here.

:haha I remember that.
To add to my list, the way I practice would definitely not be the same without UG, specifically the speed building thread. I'd still tense up every time I play, and I'd never have bothered with unanchoring my pick hand.
Ah UG...I'd be a close-minded nu-metaller with tendonitis without ya.

Well I got into from Kazaa really, like a lot of other people after hearing about Satriani somewhere on UG. It was not until much longer that I discovered the shred section here. I don't really post much here, but I read a fair amount of it other than the "OMFG metallica i5 shr3d!!!111" type of thread...
But I really haven't been influence to much on the playing side, more the listening, because frankly, I don't practice that much and can't play what I listen to, and what I can play that I listen to, I think is really sloppy but I just can't find that drive to get really good at one song... must be those damn video games I used to play giving me a crappy attention span.

Hey I'm a GP noob, so can someone tell me how to add a new section? Ie: Like on Power Tab all you do is click the add section button, but GP has to be so damn difficult.
Here's my situation:
-Overdub
| Connected
-rhythm
What I want to do is split the two rhythms and make the second rhythm start the song, and have the overdub come in after...say 4 bars. How the hell do I do that??? I only have one section of tab right now.

Consider this:
We all pretty much missed the original shred movement. Most of the guys we sit and blabber about all day are in their 40's. In 20-30 years, it'll be like a musician holocaust. Ie: Most of them will die about the same time, provided it's natural causes. It won't all be shredders either. Many musicians from the 60's, 70's and even 80's will probably die in this time period. We'll be hit by death after death, in theory of course. It'll suck.
Righteous
02-24-2006, 11:54 PM
Well, in regards to shred disapearing, there are plenty of new (aka young) shred guitarist. Just look around and you'll see many. It's not a dying passion, and the fathers of the genre have started the movement, but their deaths will not end it.
IMO at least.
Yea shred won't die, there a tons of young shredders today just waiting to get popular...which probably won't happen.

ok, wtf? I'll explain in detail an example of what I'm trying to do.
|------------

|-------------
|--guitar 2---
Ok, Guitar one and guitar 2 are playing in harmony. I want guitar one to play by itself in a new section. Like this:
---Guitar 1----
------------
--Guitar 2 (resting)
So the whole thing would be like this:
--Guitar 1--
--------------Harmony
--Guitar 2--
NEW SECTION
-Guitar 1
--------------------
Guitar 2 (Rest)
Ok, when I click Add new track it adds a new guitar to the song, like this:
----guitar 1---
----guitar 2---
----guitar 3---
How do I add a new section without adding a new instrument?

Now, if I tried to do that with my crap GP skills, I'd end up with 4 instruments, all playing at the same time, instead of 2 instruments playing two sections, NOT at the same time. Hope you see what I'm trying to do, I'm a major GP noob.
If you still can't figure it out, I'll post a simple PT, then just tell me how to convert it to GP.

I still don't see the problem.
You can just place the two "sections" behind eachother, wtf is the problem... GP doesn't work with "sections". And if you want it on different tracks, for example the FTLOG thingy, just create 2 new tracks, don't put anything in the space where track 1 and 2 are playing and copy the second section in track 3 & 4 where whatever you put in 1 & 2 ends.

It'll suck.
Shred will rise once again as history repeats itself. but it is up to us, the younger generation of shredders to buy each others albums and look 80's like. it'll be awesome.

and let it not be said that the pentatonic scale is hackneyed and overused, perhaps in the context classic rock guitarists used it yes, but today I was using pentatonic substitutions and some alterations to modal playing and ripping it up, and boy did it sound sweet!!
and some pentatonic scale notes resolved in a certain way, heighten the effect of a phrase... combine major/minor pentatonic with lydian and mixolydian modes and then throw in some aeolian + dorian flavors... it sounds real slick. and then after some hunting on tabs, I saw Frank Gambale uses similar licks, so does Vinnie Moore...

I'm quite busy with school at the moment. Therefore, I've been playing max 30 minutes a day, which is basically only technique exercises and a little bit of jamming. IMO that's enough, if you concentrate on what you do and don't fool around.

Excuse me, but can you define the difference between playing and practising?
I mean, say, is practicing a fast lick or solo from a song, practising, or is it playing. Or is practise strictly fingering and picking excerises and scales?
I'm a noob lol.
Stratwizard
03-06-2006, 09:13 AM
When I "play" guitar, it's mostly jamming, playing songs and doing stuff I can already do. Whereas, when I'm practising it's mostly learning technique, new songs etc... Much more disciplined at least.

I practice 0 hours a day, due to wrist problems. I might learn pieces for grade examinations, which takes me about an hour a piece in total, but i have to be careful to spread the load across a while. Still, my chops seem to be getting better, having absorbed previous practice or something. One thing i strive for is flexibility, and last night i was jammin a little and found i could string skip and sweep and legato fluently through my ideas at a medium tempo.
Thats all i want from my chops really, just better, with better ideas!

Sorry to be out of topic, but people at the Ultimate Settings Thread are not answering my request for their tones. So what other place is better to ask tones of those shredders than a site dedicated to them? :p:
I tried getting Vai's exact tone sometime ago, but I never succeeded. Basically, it's very hard to get their tones with digital effect processors. Sorry I couldn't help ya... :(
On the other hand, you might not want to sound exactly like Vai, Peturcci or Satriani, would you?

You have no idea how wrong you are. I would give anything to sound like them...like my right arm or left arm... :D
Well, for a period of time, i really simplified things in order to 'reconstruct' my picking technique--I did excercises like this-
-1,0,0,0,2,0,0,0,3,0,0,0,4,0,0,0,5,0,0,0,4,0,0,0,3,0,0,0,2,0,0,0-
On one string at a time for hours on end on an acoustic with .12s on and after a while i noticed just how much i could minimise the necessary wrist movements to pick 'ultra fast'--when i was playing a song though, i found id tense up again, this technique id been practising---i dont play a great deal of open string slayer, metallica stuff BTW, its just a good exercise---just hadnt become second nature to me yet. Its like when i watch Yngwie or Al Di Meola, they pick entirely from the wrist--many people assume they can pick better and more accurately by tensing their biceps and picking from the elbow---and the movement is miniscule.
Basically, i realised theres no point in me practising these alt.picking exercises if im learning to alt pick badly so i'm being harsh on myself and not allowing myself to play any songs i like until i have the wrist action down---ive heard it likened to 'waving' your hand somewhere---and ive eradicated all tension from my playing.
Thats the focking plan anyway, if i could just find the time...

found a lil' thing here applicable to economy pickers: when I downpick, my pick is usually at an angle with respect to the strings, but when following up on an upstroke, keeping the idea of economising your motion, I saw it was easier to follow on the upstroke by reducing the angle, as opposed to keeping that angle, which often had a tendency of executing a downstroke...

But closing the upload thread was a morally correct thing to do.

Bingo. If you can't convince shred fans to buy shred albums, who's gonna buy them? And its not like we were cheating record companies out of abusing artists - MAB, Vai (though i may be wrong on that), quite a few of those uploads were self produced and would have only cost a few quid...

from my experience with people who're really into music, even if they get an album off the net, which they really like, in time they actually go out and buy that very album. I personally do this myself, and have seen it in a majority of other people.
Think about it for a second, we all know that you can virtually get any song off the net or by using a file-sharing client, so why would record companies bother churning out CDs if they knew that eventually it'd be circulated and downloaded through the net, for free. The reason is the people who rip it off the net, will eventually come around to buying that CD.

Do you really think those shred-noobs, who came to uploads thread and downloaded everything there was, are going to buy the actual CD's. If there were 100 downloads - for
example, I bet there weren't more than five, who really bought the album. Besides, if you really like some album, why do you have to download it in the first place? There are a lot of places, where you can listen samples from it. I'd understand this flie sharing, if it was some crappy pop music, where the artists have no talents whatsoever. Now, were talking about shred. People, who have spent their lives on mastering the instrument.

I find a very strange creative link between my intrest in guitar playing and physics. In physics you arent creating anything, your just making realisations and unearthing concepts. Playing guitar can be likened to that, i feel, in that when I play theres a certain creative independence but also a feeling that your unearthing something that was ready waiting. Throw away all your tabs, for starters.
Favorite tone is either Gilbert or Vai.
^ That is a good place to start.
Learning songs by ear will help it a lot. After that (or at the same time) you need to start training what people call "relative pitch". Or well thats what my friend called it. =)
Its the ability to hear the difference between intervals and chords etc. You can do this by getting a friend or family member to play 2 notes on the piano, and you tell them whether its a major 2nd, perfect 5th, octave or whatever. There are ear training programs out there.
I happen to have one (or my mom did since she taught violin) called auralia. It has a wide range of exercises you can do to train your ear, but you don't need a program, you just need some set exercises.
