Malmsteen's in Icarus' Dream Suite, Vai's or Gilbert's which sounds like a reeeeaallly cheap distortion but tampered to make it sound so pro and smooth! Or Beckers I guess....My least fav is Cooley's in songs like Jazzmine's song*shuuders*...Its a really nice song, ruined by his tinny dist and wide vibrato:(

The only one I've got is auralia. If you've got a P2P program like Ares or something you could try searching for it on there, because buying it new is something like $150.
Really expensive. I know there are other programs out there...I just don't know the names of them. Sorry.

I like Bob Zabeks tone, Vai, Lane's works for what he plays but id make it sound like ****, Satch needs a mention...
Basically, almost everyone at the top has a good tone. My taste would lead towards the weird though. (Im sure that will shock you SFers...)

I liked Guthrie's comment
'At its best, it represents total freedom of musical expression, unfettered by technical limitations. At its worst, it represents a competitive sport for those with no musical identity. Allan Holdsworth and Chris Impellitteri spring to mind as examples of these extremes (though it would be unprofessional to say which player represents the best of shred and which represents the worst...!).'
Ouch.

anyway ne topic what would you prefer, being lead guitarist in a band eg dime or being your own solo artist like vai. what do you think the pros and cons of each would be?
Stratwizard
03-13-2006, 03:11 AM
I'd like to be first in a band as a lead guitarist/singer. Then maybe progress to a solo career. Kinda like Vai did. The cons in being in a band would that you wouldn't have so much freedom on composing songs and such. On the other hand, it would be easier to get recognized and signed. And vice versa on being a solo artist.

I'd like to be in the kinda Alexi Laiho position, where he sings and takes most the leads but not all, and then go on to do some solo stuff.
Although I don't sing much and I'm not that good on guitar, so that lets me down, as for pros' and cons of them, being a singer guitarist means alot of pressure as you have to do two things at once, like tapping your head and rubbing yours tomach..which I can't do :(

but guitar still comes first.
Guitars don't get pregnant.
You can play your Guitar any time of the month.
Guitars don't have parents.
Guitars don't whine... unless you want them to.
You can share your Guitar with your friends.
Guitars don't care how many other Guitars you've played
Guitars don't care how many other Guitars you have.
Guitars don't care if you look at other Guitars.
Guitars don't care if you buy Guitar magazines.
You'll never hear, "Surprise, you are going to proud father of a new Guitar" unless you go out to buy one yourself.
If your Guitar is flat you can fix it.
Your Guitar doesn't care if you never listen to it.
Your Guitar won't care if you leave up the toilet seat.
You don't have to be jealous of the guy who works on your Guitar.
If you say bad things to your Guitar, you don't have to apologize before you play it again.
You can play your Guitar as long as you want and it won't get sore.
You can stop playing your Guitar as soon as you want and it won't get frustrated.
Your parents won't remain in touch with your old Guitar after you dump it.
Guitars don't get headaches.
Guitars don't insult you if you're a bad player.
Your Guitar never wants a night out with the other Guitars.
Guitars don't care if you're late.
You don't have to take a shower before you play your Guitar.
If your Guitar doesn't look good you can refinish it or get new parts.
You can play your Guitar the first time you meet it, without having to take it to dinner, see a movie, or meet its mother.
The only protection you have to wear when playing your Guitar is a decent thumb pick.
When in mixed company, you can talk about what a great time you had the last time you played your Guitar.
And last, but not least:
If you decide to part with an old Guitar, you don't have to give up half of everything you own.
So says the wise man Burn.

After living in Japan for 6 months, I'm back in the Los Angeles and starting production of my first GUITAR INSTRUMENTAL CD. I hope to record the most frightening guitar work I've ever done, and scare everyone within hearing distance with a towering monument of glowing guitar metal intenseness. The first step is practicing my guitar 100 hours a day. So off I go...
Should be awesome :D

is shredding, or to be considered a shredder is it just playing really fast, or is it using classical techniques in your playing just curious
down to the bare bones of it, yes. A shredder is just a technically proficient guitarist. Of course if he can't write a decent piece of music then its just wasted talent.

EDIT: NEED HELP!...I'm getting my new guitar next week, I'm planning on getting either a Jackson KE-3(crimson swirl), LTD F-250 or an Ibanez RG model, I only have a £500 limit so, what do you guys think I should get?
considering I play mostly metal, bits of shred and I'm starting to learn more blues and jazz, also I have a fender 15watt and a peavy 10watt, but I could buy a new amp as well, and I am definately set that I want a guitar with 24frets, lociking nut and trem and humbuckers.
I'd go for the Ibanez, but this is coming from a guy who spent that sum of money on a Japanese Telecaster--the best guitar ive ever played-its harder to play metal/shred stuff on but i love it to bits. An Ibanez is next on my list though...
If Vai is at best 'strictly mediocre' then i guess theres hope for us all...
I wouldnt use the words 'crazy' and 'mark Tremonti' in the same sentence, if you want mediocre, then he's your man.

That, and a week of extreme playing, which is far more hard to keep "safe" than practicing. That, and i've been getting into legato, and conditioned my fingers to hammer-on a little too hard, methinks.

What do you think, what is better way to develop technique: learning shred songs or doing technique excercises?
Resiliance

Shred songs.
shredfan
03-25-2006, 05:40 PM
Hey...
What do you think, what is better way to develop technique: learning shred songs or doing technique excercises?
Not really sure, I think theres advantages to both. If your playing shred songs, then you're (probably) focussing on the musical side of playing as well as technique, which can't be a bad thing. You'll also begin to develop skills in different techniques, when with exercises you might only ever focus on picking (or whatever).
IMO though, if you want to improve a certain area of your technique, the best way to do it is by creating excercises that focus on just the trouble spot.
Say you wanted to improve your inside picking, you'd probably do so a lot faster by repeatedly playing a cyclic inside picking exercise than by repeatedly playing a run from a shred song that contained both inside and outside picking.
Freepower
03-25-2006, 06:20 PM
^ otoh, one runs a risk of only being able to apply certain techniques well in the tiny bounds of the cyclic patterns you learned them in. Thats happened to me plenties a time, sadly.
I think one should focus on the technique till it's at a level where the fundamentals are all in place, and then start learning songs/improvising with it. I dont learn any songs, let alone shred ones, and my technique sucks, so perhaps Resi's right. *shrug*
I must try and find out sometime. When my hand gets better. I might have to stop typing as well, which would eat balls. Guitar is roughly 33% of my life. Then theres 33% family and friends and 33% Aoife.
You get what you give, and thats why some guys here will overtake me. I know that spending the amount of time i do with Aoife throws away half the technique i can develop in a given length of time, but i do honestly love her and god knows she inspires me.
Matt_Malmsteen

That's so sweet :p:
Oh and I'd say the best way to learn is to mix the two, like go through a shred song, and whatever in the song bothers you, for example sweeping, just practice sweeping, that shape as well as others....although I can't really shred, I've mainly learnt via practising techniques instead of learning songs...I actually only know about 4 songs on guitar.

Scorzerci
03-26-2006, 08:19 AM
Try slow songs first that are quite easy. Right now I'm transcribing "Ten words" by Joe Satriani and for me it seems like it's going quite well. So choose a slow, quite simple song that you won't get sick of easily (you'll have to listen to the song very many times to transcribe it) and if you're the type of person that gains a lot of confidence from completing something, then a short song (because you'll transcribe it quicker which will give you more confidence).
Resiliance
03-26-2006, 08:20 AM
Well don't start out with any Shawn Lane obviously... Start out with something slow - like say the Always With You, Always With Me theme, or Starry Night, the start of FTLOG, the Bohemian Rhapsody solo, you get the picture.
