ok i'm very new to the whole shredding thing but very eager to learn. i've been practicing yngwie's arpeggios from hell and to be honest i dont find it too difficult. by no means i'm saying that i can nail the song but more like i think i'll be able to play it in a few weeks time.

however there a few things i need to ask from more senior shredders, am i supposed to pick all the notes cos i'm more comfortable hammering on and pulling off?

and what exactly is sweep picking?

thanks for your help people

perpetual shred
03-26-2006, 06:34 PM
you dont have to but to get it to sound like yngwie you'll have to pick almost everything. the way i see it is that when you can do everything with picking you be improving in many departments like picking and co-ordination rather than just keeping your legato up to scratch. good look tackling the whole thing!!

edit: sweep picking is where you pick a lick with all downstrokes or upstrpkes or combine the two. check out my sweep picking thing in the shred forum called arpeggios from heaven

I have a question for all you ear-training meisters out there:

I've been trying to get a better musical ear, and have made an interesting discovery, but since I have no real musician friends, I have no one to check this with. Anyway, I've found that I can hum a song I know, and start it in the right place. That way, in order to hum, say a C, I just think of a song I know that starts on a C, and 9 times out of 10, it's accurate.

Hearing a tone and deciphering what note it is is a bit trickier, but I use the same method, and it usually works.

What's this called? Can everyone do this? It's like perfect pitch for dummies :p: I'd love to be able to eliminate that extra step, but it's not happening just yet.

Anyways, is there anyone else that can do this, or knows what to call it?

Hey I just got a cool idea. Basically, it's to collaborate with each other to make songs, but not recordings, just tabs. There's already a thread for recording collaborations, as you all probably know, but I requested in the Site Suggestions forum to do it in Tabs and Chords with an official thread. But, we could still just do it here in this thread, eh? I think it'd be a good idea. One of us would post a GP or PT of a song we wrote, and then others can freely add to it and post the new versions. Or maybe one person write a rhythm, and someone else write a solo. It'd be good songwriting practice, and I think it'd be fun.

Anyone up to it?

But I've got a quick question, and i dont think everyone will appreciate me makin a thread on it,
I kinda missed the big classical wave a couple months ago, so can someone reccomend me some excellent classical artists/composers? Obscure or big ones, but please give specific songs.
Im looking for stuff without singing, opera, voices, any of that, backgrounds fine but im not into it, and id prefer it as one or a couple instruments. Symphonies or whatever are fine, but I'm more into just solo stuff.

Im basically a classical noob, i only know what ive learned on guitar, so I'd appreciate it mang.

If I get ahold of my sis's digital camera, I'll make a video.

But, basically, the way I do it is this:
-hold the pick to where it's level with the bottom of your thumb.
-Pick in such a way that it strikes the pick first, then your thumb.
-By itself it sounds meh, but add some heavy vibrato to make it "scream."

Once you get the hang of it, try to do it without moving your pick, instead angling your pickstroke to hit it correctly. Because that's how you'll need to do it when playing fast.

Yes, I guess you could call them squeels, a lot of people do. And as someone else said, when you do a PH almost always you should use vibrato to make it sound better.

Freepower
04-02-2006, 10:11 AM
^ grr, i just wrote a huge ****in post on PHs and lost it. Heres the jist.

The point at which you PH is dictated by the location of the harmonic nodes, its not random and you can do a whole lot more if you know this. There.

04-02-2006, 11:30 AM
Usually Les Pauls have pretty good PH from what I've seen.

TheUltimateSin
04-02-2006, 11:36 AM
That's kinda why I'm not to concerned about it. Rhoads seemed to get really good PH from them, and as for non professionals, I had a few friends who could get them really good on Les Pauls. I think it's just a matter of me learning how to them them correctly and good enough to be able to do them automatically, without staring at the string as I pick it to make sure I have my thumb placed right, then up at the fretboard to make sure I'm fretting the right note. But...I can pull some pretty mean regular(or natural, which ever it is) harmonics so I'm happy with that much :D

apocalypse13
04-02-2006, 11:42 AM
Natural harmonics become sooooo much more fun with a whammy bar. I rarely hit NH without using the bar in some way.

TheUltimateSin
04-02-2006, 11:48 AM
I'm trying to save anough cash to purchase a decent guitar with a whammy bar. I have loads of fun with my Les Paul, but I feel I need to experiment with a whammy, especially if I want to play certain Rhoads songs, like Suicide Solution. I came close to buying a Jackson RX10D not long ago, but I refrained for some reason. I think it had something to do with it only having one knob, a master volume knob. I'm not sure though.

Not entirely sure yet. I don't know what types are reliable. I was aiming for a company I've heard of, a nice shape, good feedback on it, and not too expensive(as in thousands of dollars, which I couldn't afford). Like I said, I was considering a JEM because it had good feedback, but it's kinda pricey for a good one. I also really like the shape of the RX10D from Jackson(but again, the knob issue). I don't really know what to try. But the most important thing I am looking for is that it is a reliable instrument. I don't want something that turns out to be a pice of crap 2 days later(that should be obvious though :P: ). For the time being, I am just trolling around looking at various brands.

EDIT: To clarify a little, this is what I mean by shape-

something like this: http://media.samedaymusic.com/media/brand,sameday/fit,325by400/quality,85/p27242h-ffa93cc841a502a05d137443461d8f99.jpg is just ugly to me.

This is more my cup-o-tea: http://media.samedaymusic.com/media/brand,sameday/fit,325by400/quality,85/2903000586_hi-95380a338f9d7dadfb9961f0e207e1c9.jpg

If that helps at all

Master Of Shred
04-02-2006, 12:45 PM
Well I've heard from a lot of JEMowners that they have problems with the electronics, so it ain't worth the money anyways.(Besides the fact that it's 500$ more expensive because it's a sig.)

Floyd Rose is an acceptable brand, not really expensive neither.

Master Of Shred
04-02-2006, 12:46 PM

I love my Gibson Tony Iommi SG.

...and yes, John P looked pretty bad in the those pics IMO. Oh well.

Dude... It's jazz...

It's all improvised.

And Michel Petrucciani owns Oscar Peterson to no end.

Well, I'd upload some, but my upload limit for the month is at 95% and it refreshes the 15th, so you'll have to wait a while.

This is the only one I've got uploaded atm, not one of his best...

If you want to get ANY jazz piano album, Michel Petrucciani's "Music" is, in my opinion, unrivalled. Especially if you're into Bossa Nova as much as I am.

I have yet to hear anyone on any instrument to match Petrucciani's improv for me.

Lol, I thought you said musicians can't own each other in the ONLY Shred Videos upload thread?

Exactly, heard of humor?

It's a new invention.

 indeed.

I guess I'm too used to people knowing the methods to my madness...

That piece was awesome IMO =)

Great stuff, I very much like it. Is that album "Music" easy to get a hold of? Scenario being, if I went to my local CD shop, looked around, would it be there or would I be better off ordering it?

I think you'd have to order it. Think it's on Amazon.

I put an uncomplete version up right before I got banned, but this is done. The whammy effect at the end sounds nothing like that in real life, so don't worry. And no, I don't have it memorized.

Not bad, not bad. I don't think it quite has its own "feel" to it, but thats very well could just be the damn midi!

If you can, start recording soon (get good tone btw!) and let us here that because I think it'll turn out rather nice.

Oh and I agree with the offnotes not sounding cool in an offnote way around bar 13ish.
