If you can, start recording soon (get good tone btw!) and let us here that because I think it'll turn out rather nice.

Don't get your hopes up...:(

Oh and FP, after more careful observation, I actually think my "new" style is actually closer to actual Shawn Picking. Before I had my hand angled all funny, and i think I've actually got it down now. (Sweetness) It's not full on Shawn picking though I dont think, but still quite a bit easier to control than I had it, and less tension I believe.

I'm imitating shawn through the oscill movement from a different angle than benson picking. It seems to work, but i'll give it a year and see how my picking goes...

Are you kidding?

If not, Shred is playing unbelieveably fast. Although, that's not the only connotation that defines shred music. It's the techniques encorporated into the music also.

Try listening to Joe Satirani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Michaeal Angelo Batio, Rusty Cooley, Yngwie Malmsteen, Micheal Romeo etc. (There are alot more I can't be arsed to name). You'll start to understand what shred is.

Yes and I have more than 1000$ (approx 2000$ give or take a hundred).

Get an electric...now!!

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 12:34 PM
MOS - Well I'm content with my electric right now (even though it isn't very good for shred) and I really want an acoustic, but after the acoustic my next piece of equipment will be another electric guitar. And since I'm on the topic of new gear have any of you played a pgm 300 because that's the guitar that I've been looking at for a long time (its got what I want being: maple fretboard, 24 frets, fast neck, it has basically the exact pickups i want, a Floyd Rose and it looks great IMO).

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 12:52 PM
Scorzerci, yeah I noticed that. Fender American = Pure Secks :liplick:

But you seriously are going to spend a few 1000 bucks on an acoustic?

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 02:00 PM
well I'm hoping on not paying more than 1,200ish, but if I really can't find an acoustic that I really like under that price limit then I am prepared to pay more.

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 02:04 PM

Is it smarter to just buy an average acoustic, save the sh!t ouf yourself (well money actually :p: ) and buy a really nice electric. Like a Vigier or something...

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 02:10 PM
Yeah I might do that, but after reading a discussion on the Suhr forums about wether there should be 24 fret Suhrs and then I realised that I didn't know enough about guitars to get a guitar as nice as a Vigier or Suhr. My main 2 concerns are : Do I need a Floyd Rose? and Do I need a 24 fret neck and *supposedly* have a not as nice sounding guitar? Opinions?

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 02:13 PM

Exactly.

24 Suhr's are possible though, there was only the question if it should become a standard model.

I'm getting a 22 myself, I barely use the 24th, only with some covers (serrana arps example), and if I want that E, I can it out of my guitar, or even higher.(Bumblefoot trick, only he does it with a thimble on his right hand index finger.)

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 02:15 PM
And it's also possible to get a Suhr or Vigier with a double locked FR if you want too, so that shouldn't be a problem.

And besides that, pretty much every Suhr/Vigier bridge with a bar stays in tune.

pavan
04-04-2006, 02:18 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, Vigiers have some frictionless ball sort of system which keeps the strigns in tune. And so you dont need a FR

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 02:21 PM
That's right for a part, not all Vigiers have that, and it's locked at the headstock, at the tuners. (Excluding the original and custom, who both have a double locked FR.)

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 02:22 PM
yeah I know that FR trems are available on Suhrs and Vigier, but I don't know if it is worth the hassle and apperantly it kills the sustain... Do you know if the 24 fret necks actually make it sound as bad as some people make it seem? I'd definitely want a 24 fret neck because I know how much of a pain in the ass it is when I want to learn some songs that go up to the 24th fret, but if it actually makes it sound bad as some people make it seem I doubt those extra 2 notes are worth it.

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 02:24 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, Vigiers have some frictionless ball sort of system which keeps the strigns in tune. And so you dont need a FR
Yeah I read that too, but I'm guessing the FR would give you a wider range (don't really know what it's called, how far up and down you can move the bar).

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 02:24 PM
Well, keep in mind that most Suhr and Vigier users have passed the "playing covers" stage of their career, so do all those users on that forum.

They care for the sound more than the 24th fret, which isn't exactly a must have in original songs/jams, they prefer sound over 2 frets more.

Personally, if I would still be in the playing covers stage, I would still get a 22 fretted one.

Why?

Because this is a guitar for lifetime, you ain't going to buy one soon again, because they are just too expensive. One's you have passed the cover stage you'll care mucho more about sound than 2 extra notes.

Sound > 24 frets

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 02:31 PM
yeah I figured that the sound is more important, but by the time I have enough money for a Suhr or a Vigier ( 2 or 3 years I'd guess) I'll probably care a lot more about writing my own music than playing other people's music. If I ever get a Suhr guitar this (http://suhrguitars.com/3973.htm) is what I want (well right now thats what I want;))

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 02:37 PM

In case you still like it over a few years :p:

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 02:41 PM
yeah, but if I were to get a guitar as expensive as a Suhr I would want EXACTLY what I want! But yeah I doubt I'll still like pink guitars in a few years. Btw, which color was it that you ordered (I don't think there is a picture).

04-04-2006, 03:06 PM

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 03:07 PM
No need for it basically, the other bridges with a bar on those guitars stay in tune as well, and aren't that annyoing to change strings.

And it looks hotter :p:

pavan
04-04-2006, 03:08 PM
Depends.

Bear in mind that you can use the whammy bar for a wide spectrum of expressions - using the whammy bar is an art in itself - listen to Beck.

On the other hand you can do many Steve Vai stunts.

But if this isnt the kind of music you see yourself playing, then consider the guitars without FRs

Master Of Shred
04-04-2006, 03:12 PM
There's no need for FRs to do whammy bar stunts, you can do those on Vigier/Suhr bridges as well. Maybe you can't go that far down or up, but you can do it.

Scorzerci
04-04-2006, 03:19 PM

Mos - the pitch can be raised with those as well right?

you can only raise pitch with tremolos that are floating (if you think about it, you'll see that if you were to try to pull the bar up on your average strat style trem, the wood under it would get in the way). Lots of floyds have a recessed routing so that they can raise pitch, I'm not sure if the suhrs or vigiers will have it.

besides, for raising pitch you can always just bend the string :p:

and MOS, that is indeed one of the hottest things I've ever seen. Also listened to your recording, and it was great

probably because I almost never use natural harmonics anymore :o

but, to get a kind of vibrato-y effect on natural harmonics, its cool to shake the neck vigorously, although its not really the same

NO NATURAL HARMONICS?

I'd die if i had to go without em... maybe.

I find myself using artificial harmonics way more than natural harmonics :/ I'm sure if I had a whammy bar or something I'd make better use of them, but I find that I can't really use them effectively. Probably due to my own ineptness more than the lack of a whammy bar :o

The basic idea is to pick one string and use your fingers for strings above the one you're picking. Most commonly used on the G,B, and High E strings.

NevermorePsalm
04-08-2006, 01:09 PM
Where your picking notes on the lower strings (bass notes) and usesing your ring, index, and middle finger (usually just the middle) to pick treble notes near the top strings.(with your picking hand of course)

Yea, and he has to have some good overhand technique to play those bottom strings.

I would find a 11-string guitar a bit overwhelming, definently since I wouldn't need so many damn strings, but eh the versatility would be pretty awesome.

Oh and btw I think that some people here underestimate the power of stage presence. It can make a world of difference, especially when it comes to exposure. Kiss wasn't successful because their music was good. Infact their music was very mediocre but their live shows were great and innovative when it came to stage effects and pyrotechnics.

You also have to remember, a full-time muisician is essentially an entertainer, so enertain both phsyically and musicially.

pavan
04-08-2006, 01:46 PM
To make "good" music, one does not have to be an entertainer.

Erc
04-08-2006, 02:04 PM
Music is a form of entertainment. An entertainer isn't just some bafoon that tells jokes on stage and does stupid little tricks. Music is a form of entertainment and the player playing or composing it is the entertainer. Adding "phyiscal" entertainment only adds to the music, if done correctly.

pavan
04-08-2006, 02:25 PM
which is the same as telling jokes and doing stupid little tricks

Erc
04-08-2006, 02:37 PM
Right, and doing jokes and stupid little tricks and add to the live show expirence. I'm no fan of dragonforce but I have to recognize the fact they've got something going. And its live show energy so to speak.

Herman Li and Sam whatever his last name is frankly just do some crazy stuff on stage, jumping around, spinning, guitar tricks etc. And guess what, their music (which hits off with a lot of people) has become very popular in the UK and Asia and since they signed with Roadrunner we can expect to hear them more in the US.

Hendrix also had a crazy live show.

What I'm getting at is...

A good live show will increase your chances of becoming succesful enough to become a full-time musician.

Resiliance

As long as your playing doesn't suffer then surely stage presence is more of a good thing than a bad thing, right?

Sure it doesn't affect the music, but IMO  Yngwie's shows wouldn't be anything like as entertaining if he cut his hair, went on stage in jeans and a T-shirt, sat down the whole show and never looked at the crowd.
Likewise, Gilbert's amazing live and a lot of that is due to his stage presence- he could keep the crowd entertained without even playing his guitar.

So for me, whilst stage presence isn't absolutely neccessary it can help to spice things up a bit.

That is almost true, and although I never even mentioned that...

The way you define success is important in such a statement. Success (for a person) is relative correct? Success would be reaching ones goal. If ones goal is a thing such as "musical greatness" then sucess would mean greatness. But if your "musical success" was popularity or financial stability then no, that wouldn't mean greatness.

BTW I think that you should give a **** about stage presence resi, but then again, it comes off that you don't care about my later definition of "musical success." Which is just damn well dandy really ^_^. Though having a stable job as a musician rather then working multiple jobs would be nice.

apocalypse13
04-08-2006, 10:03 PM
Yeah.

I think as long as you got a reputation on the net through independent releases and guitar sites, you could make money on the side with your music, which would be awesome. If you got really lucky, you might get noticed by a major label. At least with an underground fan base, you could afford expensive gear. <_<

Speaking of expensive gear...

I so totally want a Conford amp. Infact to my surprise I found out there is a dealer here in Columbia, very close to my house! I hope to go there sometime this spring break to see if they have any lying around I could try out (very unlikely). I did the math, if I get a summer job I'll have just about enough money for a Cornford Hurricane (The "gig worthy" harlequin). I so totally need to get a job, the tone of cornford amps (or at least all the recordings I've heard with one) are freaking eargasmic.

Ahh, bogner amps, I almost bought a boutique amp that was like a copy uberschall by Fabamps. Unfouranetly right at the time my family was in a money crisis due to my dad being screwed over by his job and I was unable to spend my "allowance" that I had accumulated for the downpayment on the amplifier.

Basically, its the ability to hammeron from nowhere onto new strings. I'll link you to some shawn stuff...

http://lanesblitz.com/media/Booklet.pdf

Examples 32, 33 for its basic use, and example 46 for what you can do when you're lane. It needs watching to be understandable, but he pwns... everyone else's linear legato... doing that.

Er, yep. Its great for sequences and general flexibilty, so it slightly diminishes my suck factor - it will, anyway.

And it sounds better, and its easier to apply, than sweeping for 0nps stuff thats hard to alt pick, so thats the main reason for using it for me.

And autumn's midi is attached. :)

Basically, yes. :)

Like i said, its always much over talked about - simple CONCEPT. Its doing it well and fluently...

Lol, just like every guitar fundamental, actually. Im off to teh bed (alone! no aoife here... :( ) so no more direct FP questions. He has a 3 hour grade 5 music theory past paper to do... and its half twelve, dammit.

I doubt those guys see it as showing off most of the time.

Oh I'm sure they don't consider it as "showing off". My eyes/ears pick it up as showing off because, like I said, it reminds my of how bad I suck. It's just a psychological phase that my mind will eventually get out of.
