I wAs just wndering, has anyone one here ever started the 'ultimate powertab' or something like that? Im sure everyone on here knows a thing or two so if everyone contributed like, four exercises or licks and someone took the time to tab in PT or GP it would be a Pretty awesome 'instant trickbag'...

Here, its very simple, continue in same sorta vein, add licks and bass and drums... whats there is basically a non-sloppy version of what i did for my mock practical at AS level.

And decide who's actually adding to it before adding to it, we dont want 50 submissions at once.

And its in gp4 format, btw. Please keep it that way or powertab, GP5 is teh gay.

you know I was thinking, I remember this grand thing that folks in Riffs and Recordings did last year - they had a backing track and a bunch of people soloing over it, it was a competition of sorts...

I was thinking it'd be really cool if we shredders got together and wrote an epic long original composition, not something that we might necessarily have to do immediately, but take our time with it and such... people could probably start off with a simple idea and that could be extended and such... it'd be a progressive effort both in terms of musicality and concept due to the nature of the project... and finally after we have a fairly concrete idea of what it would be like, we could have solo interludes for people involved in it...

any takers?

Wow. Could you narrow that down a little please?

Speed is a mixture of muscle development and accuracy. Accuracy is trained into the muscles via attention and correct practice.

What exactly do you want to do faster and more accurately, and what's keeping you back from doing them? What tensions, what motions are causing you problems?

I suppose step one is economy of motion. Start training your fingers to stay lower. Half the motion, half the effort, double the speed. Quadruple the player. (Technically, anyway, blah blah blah)

Nice clean tone. I notice your weakness in phrasing already in the first bars. Might wanna try to get your vibrato better. The backing track's pretty boring, but you can come up with some pretty nice licks.

All in all, it's decent guitaring.

It might not be tendonitis, but it's bad, and is most likely a result of too much tension.

Dissect your technique and find out what the problem is. You may have to relearn your fretting technique, or at the least make a major adjustment. But something's not working right, and it's up to you to figure out what that something is (I'm 99% sure it's tension). Is it your hand that hurts or your wrist?

What leg do you play on? Try some of these positions and see if one of them works better for you:

Ok, I'm putting this question in here in light of recent closing of certain threads *coughwhydammitwhy!!* and it probably has been done before...
Whats the largest crowd you've played(shred or fusion etc) for? What was their reaction?
I played for about 250 people. After it everyone was like "Woah! you never told us!" it was so cool,cant wait to play live again...:)

abuot 300, talent show. ****in loved me. Seriously, it was all black people and crazy chicks, and drug people i know, they loved me, from then on i had the respect of every senoir, chick, stoner, and black drug dealer in my school. Played serrena and a bit of a jam, got me into a jazz guitqar class next year too, and a music class at my school typically only for seniors. Made everything in my life radder, and it was ****ing sick too. Can't wait to play something again.

me and my band have played live twice so far... the first was at an assembly at our school (and my school is pretty big, there must have been at least 1000 people there) and the second was at a fundraiser, where there were probably a few hundred or so. I count myself lucky, because there aren't that many good bands locally, so we get praised as being "musical gods" when we're not really that special :D

once, my friend (who isn't that great) brought his guitar to school in like grade 8, and played "smoke on the water" and "do the bearcat" all day long :haha he had this huge crowd of people following him around for weeks afterwards

I think that clip I posted in the shred videos thread is about the best I can do as far as playing goes(minus the few minor mistakes, the out-of-tuneness at the end, and the crappy improvs, of course). I put something up in the original recordings section that showcases a bit of my own, but that too isn't much to brag about.

I completely agree with you: Some people are too easily impressed, and those people are the ones I live by.

I think that the main reason I seem so good to everyone around me is because there are no other guitar players in my town for them to compare me to, so they don't really know if I'm good, fair, bad, horrible, or whatever. But I have managed to influence at least 4 other people to go out and buy a guitar to learn how to play, so I guess that might be good.

But I have managed to influence at least 4 other people to go out and buy a guitar to learn how to play, so I guess that might be good.

Of course, and they usually don't listen to instrumental rock or something. And there aren't many "serious" musicians general per highschool, 1 (or maybe 2).

We have some really great guitarists in Amsterdam, also some who don't even study on musiccollege here, a friend of mine for an example, Robert, is a really kickass guitarist, but he doesn't study music or something.

There are a few guitarists(2/3) on my highschool who play Satriani/Vai stuff. One better than the other, though. (One pwning FTLOG solo, other still busy with Satch Boogie.)

But anyways, it's fun to jam with those guys, they don't know mucho theory though :(

I so totally want a Conford amp. Infact to my surprise I found out there is a dealer here in Columbia, very close to my house! I hope to go there sometime this spring break to see if they have any lying around I could try out (very unlikely). I did the math, if I get a summer job I'll have just about enough money for a Cornford Hurricane (The "gig worthy" harlequin). I so totally need to get a job, the tone of cornford amps (or at least all the recordings I've heard with one) are freaking eargasmic.

Hmm...after listening to them, what happened with these new ones is that they aren't humorous like my Dee outakes. These ones just suck horribly...well, except for my Mr. Crowley piece; everything goes fine with that one up until about halfway and sucks to the end. But what I found was:

onLy listened to the Crazy Train one and i think its quite good the way youve tried the Live Tribute intro but i think you just need to relax a little and study the verse riff a little more---your rhythym is slightly off on the plam muted open strings---i reckon with a bit of practise---alternate picking mainly---and a good transcription--powertab is always good---you can nail it.

I'll post a recording someday relatively soon. Actually no, maybe after the summer. The Oscar Peterson solo (just friends) on guitar is hella hard. It's a great technical exercise though and I recommend it to everybody, a lot of non-standard shred licks in there. No boring 3note per string scalar runs in there!

BTW went to the store today looking to play a Cornford. None were there =(. Played a dual recto instead. Ugh, those cleans suck the **** (not that its a clean amp anyways) and the distortion is a little to bassy for me though it wasn't too bad. Yea, just thought I'd throw that out there.

After reviewing as many of the accurate tabs as I could, and after countless hours of listening to Randy's live performance of the song, I've concluded that he only hits the open A note twice every time during the main riff. But, I will admit I fudged it a few times on my recording. My alternate picking kinda blows, so that is why I haven't gone after the alternate thrice picked A, because I can't work the timing or the rhythm right.

But thanks for the positive outlook. It's goes much appreciated :)

what helped me was chromatically doing one position up and down the neck.


the second one works very well for it, or if you reverse it, that gives it a nice counterbalance thing

Whoa, I've been practicing the first shape a lot myself.

Are you comfortable with sweeping yet? I just stuck with practicing a 3nps sweep shape in one direction until I got comfortable with it, then practicing the other direction, and finally putting them together fluidly. But I think you're farther along than that...?

I still think Altitudes and No Boundaries have great sweep picking sections that work well for building speed with sweeps, maybe look into those? I'm not a huge fan of sweep picking (at least in the way most people use it), but learning those two songs have helped my sweep picking technique a lot.

yay...I made a second attempt at the ol' Crazy Train for anyone who cares. This time, I completely left out the fills altogether to avoid a crapiness multiplier. I personally think it went a little better than the first time, even though I still ****ed up here and there. And no, PooKoo, you don't get to hear me swearing in this one.................my amp was loud enough to conceal it ;). I also plan to re-record my short Mr. Crowley bit and throw it up there sometime today...if I ever get a decent version recorded, that is....

EDIT:.....well...after an agonizing 9 takes, i finally got the most decent recording of Crowley that is possible for me today. It seems ok up until the pre-solo on out; then it blows. I dropped my pick to try to tap the solo, since there is no way in hell I am capable of picking it at my current skill level....I am only a Level 2 guitar player with a +3 guitar. But yeah....have a good laugh :)

It's TOTALLY just sitting up there. Its finished and all, everything made, it even makes sound. Tested it through some PA system speakers and all that, everything is stable. Even modded it a little. But then I got lazy. I ordered 2 103db The Wizard speakers, and now they are just sitting up stairs doing nothing. In short, all I have to do is go out and buy wood, build a cabinet and it would be 100% finished but...yea.

Interestingly enough though, my father and I were talking about it in the car today and it sounds like we're actually gonna start building the cabinet relatively soon, hopefully tomorrow since I hope to go out and buy the wood I need then.

Oh and in short on the tone of the thing (through the PA speakers, don't know how good it'll sound through the actually guitar speakers) it does a great classic rock crunch which was expected, it even does a good slayer sound. Its too trebely though but when I stop being lazy and order the resistors and capacitors I need I'll mod it to be bassier and more mids. I also need to redo all the grounding because I didn't star-ground it the first time through =(, so it gets squeal at maxed out gain.

Of course all this requires me getting up off my ass, and hopefully I'll do that tomorrow but....well I'm unconsiously good at procrastinating.

He just took the 3 notes, found the 3 notes on one string on the guitar and tapped it. Like the 12 on the Low E string is E, the 5th fret on the Low E is A and the 9th fret is a C#. He just found the 3 notes on each strong in a tappable form and tapped them out.

I have teh GH50L... What you want is a GH50L and your volume pot wired so high frequencies don't drop off if you roll the volume back.

Volume pot = instant gain & dynamics control.

Especially with a good amp. There is one thing good that you can steal from SS modeling amps and thats a certain resistor and capactior setup I think on the 2nd pin of the tube (can't remember) from the input jack. It can take you from beautiful cleans to mesa distortion.

Anyways yea, a laney would do your best bet for a Gilbert tone because he plays a laney ^_^.

I've never gotten a chance to play a laney, just curious...how are the cleans? Detailed description (or sound clip if anyone may).

BTW its amazing how something so small like loosely fisting your hand can improve your picking technique (or at least for me). Me having my fingers spread apart and slightly up caused quite a bit of tension in my hand and now thats all gone! Hopefully I've worked out everything...though I'm sure there is more somewhere =(

OK, I finally decided to learn Vais Boston rain melody todayand although im geting on very well with it---great four finger legato work outs!--but theres one bit where he starts tapping in '10s'---its actually 10:8-i dont know the technical term-nondecaduplet--and being totally self taught, im not too hot on the old subdivisions--I know a straight run of 32nd notes '10's at the songs slow tempo isnt massively taxing but im struggling with how to 'count' the rythym--my metronome doesnt do divisions of 10---so how would any of you approach it?
Counting 1,2,3,4,5,1,2,3,4,5 feels really unnatural to me, im getting on better counting 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,4 but im still not satisfied...

Does that make a word of sense???

The Supra is pretty much the cheapest Excalibur, not because of it's playbility, but because of it's looks. They still look pretty okay if you ask me though, pretty much the Excalibur Special without burst and matching headstock.

No much difference if you ask me, you're really lucky if you can get the Supra under 2000?, but it's worth the try.

Yeah I did, I just browsed through the Vigier site and I noticed that there isn't a dealer in finland, so I guess you have no choice but to order it. (if you want it of course.)

I'm pretty sure that you'll love it, you have to get used to the extremely flat neck in the beginning though, but after that it's rockin'.

In the Ebay gem thread guitar forum there was a link to an excalibur which sold on ebay for something like 1700 swiss francs which (according to XE.com) is about 730 quid :D
