I tried transcribing a sonata from JS Bach and it took me 2.5 hours to get about 20 seconds of music down. I agree with the statement that transcribing rythm is a bitch. Maybe I should start with something that contains metronome like drums.

I practise without any amplification most of the time. Guess that gave me kind of a forcefull pickstroke but I don't mind that to much. When I turn up the amp I start noodling too soon and nobody deserved to hear me repeating the same thing over and over again :D.

I practice without an amp a lot of the time because it's a real bitch to set up i my room, but when i have an amp, i normaly play with a the gain level on 3 and some delay to mask my crappy playing.
Stratwizard

You should practice with distortion, unless you're training strenght. It's a lot easier to do techniques on clean channel, cause there's no noise when you move from string to string. When you change to distortion, you have suddenly a **** load of noise.

How long should it take someone practicing about 2-3 hours every day to master the fine art of shredding? Is there like a special trick to it, because i keep practicing and practicing but im only getting marginally quicker and more accurate in my playing.
apocalypse13
04-20-2006, 10:44 PM
Well that's as good as it gets...
There's no special trick to make you learn it overnight. It takes a LOT of practice.
Just focus on no tension and accuracy. Speed will come over time. If you're accurate and loose when you practice slowly, you'll be accurate and loose when you eventually become fast.
That's the biggest tip I can give, good luck!

The man speaks the truth. Impeliterri's left hand technique of barely removing his fingers from the strings Vs. Cooley's hands flapping wildly in the air, probably to keep air circulating arround his body to keep it cool so that he doesn't melt down, because he is in fact a robot.

Although it's been a few pages that Mos' very nice guitar (s) have been discussed I would like to show you the one I bought yesterday. This one is a Bo-el MC 6,a Marcel Coenen signature.
Specs: ( partly copied from the Bo-el website)
Body: 2 parts ash carved top
Neck: Hardrock maple set neck
Fingerboard: Rosewood. Jumbo Frets
Pickups: 2 Bo~el HB-SD/6 Humbuckers
Controls: Volume pot, tone pot with phase switch
Pickup Switching: 5-way switch and mini switch for coil split
Bridge: 6 string "pro edge" with push-in arm.
Hardware: Floyd Rose tremolo
Special: Shark inlay in fingerboard. 6 string guitar build by Huub Boel ( Holland) in cooperation with Marcel Coenen.
Scalelength: 647.7 mm
I played the same one at his house a few weeks ago ( he's my guitar teacher for those who didn't know) and I immediately liked it. It sounds great, and the playability is just incredible. It is arguably the best guitar you can buy under 1000 euros. It easily equals ( if not exceeds) my Ibanez, although I'm still keeping that one. :) Receiving it from Marcel personally made it extra special of course. :)
So, here it is, along with my other guitars:

1.1.4 Standard style, variation 1: Suspended fist technique exhibited by Joe Pass, Barney Kessel and many older players who at some point probably had to play hard in order to get volume out of their guitars: This is the standard style, but the remaining fingers are closed into a loose or tight fist, eliminating any contact between the hand and the guitar other than through the pick.
Whats confusing about that?

Sorry, i'm just very tired atm.

Trying not to sound like a skip reading idiot, could anyone explain the George Benson technique differently? Everytime i try, it just looks fundamentaly wrong.
1.1.8 George Benson's picking style: When I finally got to see George Benson play live in the mid-70s, I was advanced enough myself to instantly realize that he had solved the picking problem. He had somehow resolved the inherent conflict between accuracy and feel, regardless of speed. Unlike every other player I had seen (or have seen since), his technique fully supported him. I observed and dissected his technique very carefully, then applied it to normal humans:
For a normal human, the pick is held between the tip of the thumb and the flat, or pad, of the index finger; the middle finger can also rest next to the index finger. The first joint of the thumb must be locked in fully open position, and the first and second joints of the index finger must be arched and locked. (George's thumb bends back so much at his first joint that he can grip between the flat of his thumb and the flat of his index finger, but this is rare. The exact point where the pick makes contact in the range between the tip and the pad of the thumb varies from hand to hand.) This causes the pick to be rotated about 90 degrees counterclockwise from the standard style, viewing the guitar as described above. Depending on the stance (see below), the other fingers can be splayed out over the fingerboard or curled up toward the palm.

Ok now that i have a perfect amp picked out, its time to work on what might be becoming a more pressing issue.
New guitar.
Lately my faithful old rg has been turning to ****. Strings snap easier, the neck is a little messed up, some frets are dying, chips all over it, the electronics fail a lot (or did, hasnt for a while), it wont stay in tune, even when locked, the bridge is going to ****, etc etc.
Anyways, since many of you have ****ing sick guitars, what do you think would be the best, most well rounded shred guitar? I know many will say vigier, others will say jem, whatever, just tell me the pros and cons of it. I want something with a fast neck, hopefully a floyd rose, but its not a big thing or anything, nice pickups, stays in tune, please, and shape, size, color, and price dont matter, though the cheaper the better.
I know most of you will ignore this post, but please.

i am in a similar situation to you pookoo and i have decided that since price isnt too much of a worry for me that i am going to build my own shredtastic guitar next, like i am going to get which pup i want (dimarzio virtual PAF for neck and bridge) whack a nice new ibanez floyd rose on it and get a wonderful fast maple neck and fretboard....i have no idea where i am going to find the right body for this though.....
but thats beside the point maybe this could be an option for you?

if price don matter pookoo, i would get conklin to make me the perfect guitar for me. altho they are very expensive, they are well worth the price (ive played one and it was better then any Ibanez (exept for maybe the 7 string JEM w/ a fret and action jobby) and wasted any vigier, jackson, or any other guitar u can think of. if price is not an issue ide vouch for a conklin.

damn, well, mr clapton, ive thought of that for a while, dunno if i could do it or not. I can imagine myself getting 99 percent done and ****ing up.
Also, conklins sound cool, though id need to play a guitar before i buy it, its just habit. Also, price only doesnt matter because right now i have no money. Thanks though, both are good ideas.

I want a Conklin, so bad.
i haven't played one but the options are focking ridiculous.
I'm about 80% sure that the next guitar I buy is gonna be the Shechter C-7 Hellraiser (Jeff Loomis). Nevermorepsalm showed it to me, and I want a 7 string. Plus, it's only 1000 bucks.

Only $1000? How about you just slip me a couple $1000 too. I have a few purchases I'd like to make.
Speaking of guitars...
I want a hollowbody. Badly. Looked in a sweetwater magazine, everysingle one I saw was over $2000. Except a peavey. But peavey guitars suck (not amazingly fond of their amps either!)
A C-7 hellraiser would be cool, I've always wanted a 7string. Could play amon amarth and morbid angel stuff without having to drop. And nevermore stuff!

check out the ibanez artcore series, its supposed to be good for the price.

Ye, I thought the artcore series were pretty good as well.
Pookoo you should check out the Ibanez Rg8270 j custom with flame top. I think thats pretty much the best guitar I've ever played. It's gorgeous as well. Although it may be a bit over your (anyones) price range. I think the chepest ive seen on in the UK for is about £1400 so :(
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm gonna try to go to a shop sometime soon and try one. Its a shame that I'm probably gonna have to go to 5 or 6 different music stores to find one.
I hate south carolina =(

Im curious... what are you guys future plans? do you want a career in music?
I personally don't, music and playing guitar will always be my hobby but I'll go to lawschool next year so that doesn't have anything to do with music...

I'd love to have a career in music, and a part of me will always keep trying to make that happen. However, I'm still studying for my Master's degree, so time is a problem.. I'll finish my education first, and see what will happen after that :)

^^ what university are you in? I'm planning Tilburg, that would be 30 minutes by bus

^ University of Amsterdam. It was either that, or Utrecht. ( Not that my study isn't found anywhere else; this was more practical) Since I grew up in Utrecht I decided it was time for a change of scenery, so Amsterdam it was going to be :) Tilburg is cool place though, lots of opportunities to score a beer or two :p:

What I want to do is take some degree in business and then do a few years of a musical college and then basically have business as my backup plan.

I'm no where near motivated or good enough to get a career in music.
I'm a cricket nut so anything to do with that (maybe even playing professionaly) would be my dream job. I'll probably end up being an accountant or osme office job like that.
Ahhhh crap, i just downloaded a Joe Satriani discography and now it's diss apeared, crap.

wtf
1000 isnt too bad...
A nice 7 string I would expect to be over 1000 bucks, let alone a signature model.
Edit: teh career thing.
I'm taking a class for CAD (Computer Assisted Drafting) at a tech school for the next two years. Then in college probably the same thing. It's basically designing 3D stuff using computers, great for architecture or software designing. What I hope to get into is the creation of video games. (Big Bucks nukkahs)
I hope to one day be good enought to catch the eye of a scout or something however. Although it's just hopes, it sure would be cool. Just make extra money on the side with small time records if nothing else.

I'm doing engineering, I'll decide once its done.

well I'm at a pretty good place, with my future plans. As far as music goes, I never really intended to make it as a musician, I just want to explore music as much as possible as well as the depth of guitar playing... if I do make money as musician or even really get into it, it'll be more accidental than intentional... I just like jamming up with random people (who can "play" of course) and see what goes... I'm currently heavily involved in college academics and am a declared Computer Science major, which has always been another area of interest... let's see where things go...

^I do know exactly what you mean though. Remember a while back when I was talking about buying a new guitar with a whammy? I found one: a Snow White Jackson RR1 with black pinstripe around the edge and mother-of-pearl shark fin fret inlays, Floyd Rose Original Double-Locking 2-Point Tremolo. The price? $2100 without tax. I have a lot of saving to do....

Good question.... I'm personally just ending my first year of college....so I'm looking at uni, might go to Cambridge to do PPP (Psychology, Philosophy and Physio).
In terms of music, I would love to do that kinda thing but I'm nowhere near good enough and.......yeah....I'm what 18 in..4 months and I've only been playing two years so I'm nowhere near good enough basically, plus age goes against me.
