Well. I'm 18 and doing a Masters in Theoretical Physics, think of that what you will. After I graduate I'd like to become an an actuary or a futures trader to make big bucks and buy loads of guitars..and houses (hopefully that is).
^Did you read my recommendation of the Ibanez a couple of pages back. Stuff in the States tends to be about the same price in $US as it is in £ here. But I don't know if thats the kind of thing your looking for.

Idk if I look my age or not...
I think I maybe look a little older than I am. I'm 15, maybe I look about year or two older. But that's just IMO.

yeah, i saw, Ill look into it.
I have no idea what I'm going to do for a living.
I've always though building amps as a side thing (if I got any good at it) would be cool. Would only have to sell 100 amps at $1000 to live off of.
When I go to college I'm gonna...do...something. I'll probably find some sort of proffession thats just budding out there, because thats where the money is. Making money in an "expirenced" form of buisness = hard.
I'm a freshman in highschool btw. So having no plan for my life (yet) isn't too bad ^_^. Oh and yea Pookoo I thought you looked much older.

I'm in my last year of College. I'm setting up myself for an LL.B (Hons) in Law. I hope to become a barrister (my ultimate dream, i'd do anything to get it). As far as music is concerned, i'll deal with that later, once I get my degree, if possible.

^Nothing wrong with that :) Looking younger/older than you actually are has its pros and cons I guess. People usually think I'm 5 years younger than I actually am... Ah well, if that's still the case 20 years from now... :p:
It was fun to read what you people do from day to day, and what your plans are :)

SnowballofDoom
04-24-2006, 09:17 PM
A program to jam with people online, in real time. With reasonably high quality. For most of you, you'll wanna go to the download section, and locate the windows XP client. But get whatever one suits you (obviously). They have an IRC channel for people to join so you can play w/ others randomly loafing about. And they have a forum section for it too.

an online jam program. Basically a live chat room, you hook the mic up to your amp and jam with other guys online.
At least in theory. I personally haven't figured it out so far. :o

hey i have a few questions about Ron Thal like how does he reach frets higher that 24, does he have a guitar with that many cause i have seen his bumble guitar when he plays guitars suck and i have a tab where it goes up to fret 36? and also whats this thing i am hearing about a thimble someone please fill me in
Freepower
04-25-2006, 07:21 AM
^ he uses a thimble like a slide. That solves both your problems.
mr_clapton
04-25-2006, 07:22 AM
so he puts a thimble on one finger and slides up the strings to the pitch he wants?
^^pretty much--i read an 'in the style of Ron Tal' lesson in some magazine and the notation was littered with instructions like 'slide up to imaginary fret 33 w/thimble'--which i suppose isnt all that hard except it was performed during a crazy multi-fingered polyrythym tapping sequence with some HUUUGE legato stretches--

Yea so basically today, after what I felt to be a very unproductive practice session, decided to find out how fast I could do a painstakingly simple chromatic spider pattern at.
240bpm 16th notes. Too bad I'm a million miles away from playing anything remotely more complex then that, but it told me what I needed. I have the picking potential to reach at least that. I needed the confidence boost after a half week of what I considered to be unproductive practice sessions.
Just thought I'd share that all with you

Meh, I've been practicing a whole butt loads of Thal-esque tapping, you know huge ass finger gaps, mixed with many finger placements at blood curdling speeds. The usual.

Woh! I forgot about that song (sea of lies)
I learned that tapping part quite a few months ago. Damn it has been forever since I've played it, I probably can't play it up to speed anymore.
I really need to stop having uh...practiceing...ADD, or something. I typically start learning a solo, learn a lot of it, and then just quit or get bored of it and find something else. *sigh*
It ends up with me not having a very impressive repritore(sp?)...I really need to kick myself in the ass.

It's different with me. I'm awful at sweeping(Just replace it with sweep tapping =D), picking techniques, but I'm freakin awesome at legato work. Found a new 8 finger tapping thing for myself where you put fingers crossed and under and between eachother, and then you just keep going up 2 frets then back one and you have do it really fast. It makes a kick ass rain sound effect.

I really need to stop having uh...practiceing...ADD, or something. I typically start learning a solo, learn a lot of it, and then just quit or get bored of it and find something else. *sigh*
It ends up with me not having a very impressive repritore(sp?)...I really need to kick myself in the ass.
Yeah I have that exact same problem. The only song I know in full is Merry Chistmas by John Lennon and Yoko Ono... :(

I get that problem..I never learn a whole song...but I thought about it and really you don't really need to learn whole songs unless you're gonna cover them or something, just learn your fav bits or whatever.....
But yeah the only songs I know the whole way through are The Trooper by Maiden and Row-Row-Row Your Boat.....

I get that too. Like the other day I tried learning Black star but i kinda stopped after it got to the solo ( the bit about 2:40 is through) I thought I'd be better off learning a nice d# harmonic minor or something and just doing it myself. I know quite a lot of metal songs all the way through, but when it comes to shred only about 6 or 7 songs.

Smae thing happened with me for the wind cries mary.
I don't think there's much point in learning whole songs because most of it is just repetition which is hell boring to play all the way through with no backing.
I've learnt tonnes of parts of songs in 3 years, but most of it i forget because i don't play it enough because i'm learning something else.

Neither am I, though I REALLY want to be. But, I need to find a vocalist, or learn to sing myself.
And FYI, it SEVERELY helps your playing when you play with others, especially a drummer. Playing with a constant beat forces you to always be thinking on your feet.
1.)So I would recommend keeping writing, and try to write drums and bass too if you have the software to, so you can sort of experience playing with a beat.
2.)Learn theory, that helps a lot, as much as you may want to deny it. I always thought theory wasn't worth the effort to learn, but trust me, it is worth very second. You can write anything you want with a good knowledge of theory (something I don't have yet :o)
3.) Get in a band if you get a chance.
4.) The more you write, the better. Writing comes easier the more you do it, and it becomes more fluent and sounds better when done. So just keep writing.

That's how I've always done it. I think it was something I picked up from a Vai lesson...
Anyway apoc, you just stick with one "thing" (playing on only one string, only doing trills, only playing within a certain fret range, anything you can come up with) until you've completely milked it, and everything you play starts sounding similar and boring.
Then you keep doing it.
Eventually, you'll come up with some really cool ideas or phrases that you can make into a song, or stick in an existing song you've come up with. It's tough to break through that boredom phase where you don't think anything else can be done (for me anyway), but once you do, the possibilities are endless.

Certainly the most efficient. Fun, too.
Necessity is the mother of invention. It's a simple idea. You say "I'll only do _____" or "I won't do ______" and then stick to it. While obviously trying to compose something simultaneously.

Hi, I posted quite some while ago and asked about practice schedules,(doubt anyone remembers :D) but thats not relevant...
I never really got around to practice on my guitar as much as I wanted to, but now I finally have nothing but time! plus now I'm inspired to practice from lsitening to surfing with the alien :D
so where should I start, to eventually after many years of practice learn how to shred?
and what "shred" artists do you recommend? Right know I've been turned on to Satch, Vai ,and a little bit of Freedman... I don't like Malmsteen that much tough...
Thanks...

i would say instead of doing exercises countlessly over a metronome learn one of the songs from those guys, i would say if your starting off do something familiar like satch boogie that isnt too fast. It will be hard and you will be tempted to just go stuff it but when you reach those hard phrases that you cant play and you practice them slowly and build up speed, then finally can play them you know you have gotten better, built techniqe in that are AND be one step closer to being able to play the song.
Ugliest Weenie
04-29-2006, 04:15 AM
Yup, that sounds good, since songs can open doors to learn a certain technique and to me learning a song is more fun than countlessly do some exercise...
btw, anyone here have the Joe Satriani - Guitar Secrets book? I actually found it in our basement. I used to belong to my brother and I was wondering if it is any good?
I've already checked out the 4 first exercises and they seemed very useful to mee, but thought I should get a second opinion...

Day 1: Practice new licks and riffs
Speed training 1+1h
Day 2,4,6: Speed training 1+1h
Tapping 1h
Alt. pick. 1h
new scale pattern 1h
triad chords 1h
Day 3,5,7: Speed training 1+1h
practice on new song 1h
new scale pattern 1h
fretboard memory 30 min
new theory 1h
this would be for the 3 first weeks
Day 1: new licks and riffs
Day 2,4,6: speed training 1+1h
new scale pattern 1h
sweep pick. 1h
down pick. 1h
7th chords 1h
Day 3,5,7: speed training 1+1h
theory 1h
scale pattern 1h
learn song 1h
practice writing riffs, licks 1h
That would be another 3 weeks.
I was also thinking that I'd take 1 hour per day to go trough one lesson in the Satriani book...
Oh and I'm sos ossry for the doule post!

for 1 h I only play at a low tempo (with a metronome of course) different licks and chromatics up and down the neck on all the strings, then pause and another hour where I play short speedy bursts at a higher tempo and in between I play at a medium tempo... there was a thread about that workout in the musician forum a while back...

Yes, i found it really useful-its not an instant shortcut to guitar mastery, but then it doesnt pertain to be, its just a very incisive collection of the things a lot of us--well, me--know we SHOULD learn, but sometimes cant be bothered--harmonised scales, modes, chord voicings etc...
By the way, my current method of practising involves two little books, each one with about 100 short exercises in--the one book is sixteenth notes and the other is triplets--some exercises are from magazines, some are from songs i like and others are just pure 'chop builders'--basically i stick the metronome to a set--slow-- tempo and work through the exercises spending one minute on each one---
For a long time i was really against this type of practising because of everything i heard about the need for diversity and the dangers of repetition but to my surprise, this really works and like what someone said earlier, if the exercise is a little boring i'll end up changing it---sort of a watered down form of improvisation if you like--while playing to the click, which requires a surprising amount of quick-thinking--you know, same rythym but quickly changing the notes...I'm constantly adding to these exercises with anything i like the look of or anything that comes to me while jamming and it has improved my technique SOOOOO much i cant believe it. Obviously, theory and composition play just as large a part for me, but for out and out woodshedding, i think ive found the right formula for me.

Thanks. And I should have, but mysongbook pisses me off a ton.

It's gp4.
Edit: Nevermind, they must have converted it. Let me see if I have the gp4 file. I know I tried it out before they changed, but I'm not sure if I saved it.
Edit 2: I didn't save it. :( Perhaps one of these chaps did though.

I was corresponding with MoS over mail, and this is what he said: apparently, Greg Howe is the new guitarist for Planet X.
Now I'd never really gotten into Planet X, but now I might have reason to check out some of their new stuff with him.

I also found this somewhere, dont know if its of any use to any of you---its not all that insightful but there's a couple of nice licks in there which you could make an exercise out of.

I haven't bothered to go there and flame those idiots, cause it seems so pointless. They'll just reply with the same "no emotion" argument and never learn.
Props to you for sticking out though! :)

As I said in that thread, good try Apoc, credit to you for having enough patience to have another stab at it. But,tbh I could not waste a single cell more of energy on trying to convert ignorant fools. Let them be fucking tools and let us appreciate our stuff. If they're willing,of course by all means I'll be the first to welcome them and give them new stuff to listen to but if not, fuck 'em
