I discovered shred.... um..... probably from the "Crossroads" movie.
During the climax to the film, where the young kid battles against Vai and after he has done those arpeggios and plays the fast bit around the 14-17th frets had me mesmerised (sp? :p: ) the day I saw it and still does now, even though I can almost play it all.

Thanks man, it means a lot to me! Wish me luck in the blues comp!
And so that it doesnt look like im turning this thread into my personal promotion thread, im not into shred, but there's shred i like.
Eg, satch, cooley, and one of resi's songs is ****ing awesome.
Im only around the shred forum because of the higher level of intelligence and technique - im sick of reading threads asking about pinch harmonics, i want to learn the really crazy stuff!
(pssst, today i did some amazing sweep and tap arpeggios! At about 3nps, where they sound tasteful).
Scary news - fareri played slowly is beautiful. Maybe he has faster ears than us and hears the melody better?

I must hear this slow fareri...
Freepower
03-26-2005, 08:32 PM
no, no, fareri PLAYED slow, he just plays it too ****ing fast all the time. I found one of his exercises on chops from hell really nice until he played it all fast. Thats where that statement came from.
jiveasshonky
03-26-2005, 09:02 PM
all he is doing is playing arpeggios up and down the neck, of course it sounds musical played slowly its the job of the musician to make it sound musical. becker was good at it, fareri is not.
Freepower
03-27-2005, 05:58 AM

evac|DB
03-28-2005, 03:41 PM
Jason Becker's Serrana (the "original" one) is pretty much only arpeggios up and down the neck, still people seem to like it. ;)
But I do agree about Fareri; the stuff I heard him play is pretty boring. One of his videos really surprised me, though, when he started playing some nice slap guitar. I haven't heard any of his songs but he has the potential to make good music.
Freepower
03-28-2005, 03:44 PM
Yeh, whats his actual songs like? Hes probably insecure and feels the need to show off. Even cooley's vids are just chop fests.
And the slap really suprised me as well! I have that vid on a huge DVD of awesome guitarists, which i made using nero.

Resiliance
03-28-2005, 04:00 PM
Well, it didn't surprise me....
It's so bad that all of you seem to think a musician can only do one thing(in this case Fareri), when you don't even know that musician in person, and YET feel able to pass judgement on his abilities/capacities/possibilities.
Let the man do what he likes, insecure or not.
(Though I severely doubt the insecurity)
I wouldn't be surprised if he made immensely beautiful slow pieces earlier in his life, and then passed on to the stage he is now. To each his own, because what he plays now IS probably immensely beautiful to him.

Sorry blackened-world, but your so obviously a complete arsehole with no sense of humour, etc, etc.
And John Kimble is a poof? Was that MOS's idea too?
Do you have ideas of your own?
And also, a steve vai fan club? Well, im afraid your probably the worst advert for that. I mean, would Vai endorse starting silly hate clubs? What are you going to do? Gang up on blackened world and hurt his feelings? I mean, by the sounds of things, your best possible insult involved spelling amazing. Nice one, but he beat you to the sarcasm mark, mate. Double sarcasm doesnt work.
I mean, honestly, i do encourage you to try and start this club, but i think that he will simply own you, over and over again, let alone this board laughing at you. How do you feel having yourself ridiculed in a stickied thread? Real smart.
Anyway, resi, i've only seen 2 people do slap guitar, and i wouldnt have expected fareri to know it. Then again, he does have excellent technical abilities in all areas.
I dont think hes insecure for stupid reasons, i read an article by him where he sounded very...lol, insecure. BUt he has no need to be, as far as im concerned.
With a faster ear, im sure i'd find his stuff far more interesting, and i know fine well he enjoys what he's doing, otherwise he wouldnt do it.
And as for judging him, those are our opinions of him, personally, i think what i've heard is crap (exremely chop-filled crap). Thats that. Thats also why i was asking for a description of his actual songs, other than suspension.
FINALLY, me and axegrinder#9 have a collab up in Original Recordings. As one would expect, i get uber-pwned on guitar, but hey. Mixed reviews, some hate, some love.
Also, the blues competition is going strong, and id encourage you to vote, as there havent been enough votes at all. And one of my songs is up. Dont mind if you dont vote for it, just take a look!

Lol, yeh, my guitar and my gf eat up most of my time, if i wasnt such a nice guy i would have no-one but my guitar and gf.
Why am i such a nice guy? ;)
Nah, i have loads of friends, school and school related activities should take up about 7 hours a day, but i relegate that to friend time, and then theres guitar time from when i come home till about 9 (interspersed with computer games time, but atm we have nothing worth playing that much), and then i talk to my gf for about the next 3 hours on the phone. Then i sleep.
Seriously, music and my woman is my life at the minute.
EDIT: Im giving this information out because currently i am staying up all night to get my sleeping patterns right, and companionship on msn or a chat in this thread would be appreciated, ill be refreshing this thread regularly to see if anyone wants a chat.
EDIT 2: Could the third person that called me a badass today please reply to this? Perferably by repeating "you badass" as the thread i was in was deleted while typing a response. About downloading becker and charity? Thanks!

There has been Violinist shredders for centuries, Paganini being one of the more famous ones.
Paganini's playing was such that he was thought to be associated with the devil.

And he's no joke, old MOS, hes a nice guy and he plays better than me. Calling him a joke for those two things, well, **** you, that makes me a joke too. And more of a joke, considering he plays better shred than myself.
Now, say he did fake that recording, do i care? Nope, i like the guy. And not just coz he voted for me in the blues comp, but because of who he is. Adding "One-time fake" to the end of how i describe him will make no difference to me now.
So, you either call me a joke, and try and fight this extremely "goodie-two-shoes" posts inherent niceness, or you just let the ****er go and make your bitter jokes with a good post either before or after them.

I can sure tell you guys arent very absorbed into proving me wrong. just like guitar playing. half of the people here arent focused or abstracted into guitar playing or shredding. which would explain why half of the posts here end in arguments.
ask yourself this. if you dont play guitar for more than 2 hours a day, do you feel guilty? does 60% of your mind consist of the fretboard? does simply looking at the guitar make you wanna play it?
end your stupid club and end this bull****. post the recording and STOP FUCKING AROUND.

Shred has a different feel to it, as does metal, gabba, hardcore, etc.
They just dont like shred. And they dont see why we do. That, and a lot shred is ****e, so obviously, if they hear someone who exists only on chops then its gonna really piss them off.
EDIT: Go www.theberzerker.com, go to the sounds section, and download massacre - did you enjoy that? Bet not, did it just sound like noise? Did you feel it? Now, thats obviously not technical enough to be interesting, but go look at the tab. You downpick that fast, go on, i dare ya!

It really needs some delay or reverb, now it sounds little bit boring. The playing gets better towards the end, cause in the beginning the notes are not in time very well. The sweeped part is very good, but you should get some dynamic to your playing. Learn some tapping and alternate picking, then your shredding would be more versatile.

i play sometimes on my fathers awful nylong stringed acoustic, which has no access to frets 12-16 due to a lack of cutaway, and its can be used as a fretless (practically) by playing without fretting, so i generally use it for really random stuff.

Set list included (but was not limited to) K'm-Pee-Du-Wee, Answers, Sisters, Lotus Feet, Glorious, Building The Church, Whispering A Prayer, The Audience Is Listening, Reaping, Juice, The Crying Machine. I was very glad that he played Sisters, that was a nice surprise. Unfortunately the girl I was with had to go home before the encore, and I missed FTLOG!:sad::sad: There's always next time I suppose!
I wasn't too big a fan of Lotus Feet from the album to be honest, but the emotion that he put into the live performance just blew me away!
Everything he played was dead-on precise and fantastic. I think I made a shred fan (or at least a Vai fan) out of the girl I went with (who happens to be the same one who wants to learn guitar, for those of you who read the Musician Talk forum).

i personally enjoyed the encore the most. Liberty, Jam on my guitar wants to kill your mama with Sardinas, and the new arrangement for FTLOG.

At the Detroit show:
I was standing roughly dead-center on the first set of steps, so I could see just above everyone's heads. A few feet behind me there was a jackass who kept yelling stuff. He eventually moved to the front.
I was kind of near where Sardinas went up the stairs in the audience when he was being carried by that stage hand during his final song in the opening act.
Did anyone see that guy who looks like John Petrucci before he cut his hair? I almost told him that he did, but he didn't look so happy?
I saw those guys who put up signs over on the left, but couldn't see what they said.

What do you guys think would have happened to Megadeth if Marty hadn't gotten somewhat famous in Cacophony?

I don't know, but Marty has acclaimed way more fame with Megadeth than he ever had with Cacophony.

^I love Megadeth..
One of my All time fav bands..
Marty pwns BTW, I like him most in Cacophony, closly followed by his Solo stuff..
i like marty when he was in cacophony, megadeth, and solo, he is an amazing guitarist. I love his exotic solos and his heavier solos in megadeth. I like his solos in Holy Wars and Hangar 18 the most. There are too many amazing solos to mention while he was with cacophony and his solo stuff.:D

^Ahem, i have to say that the Tornado of Souls solo is the best Solo Marty has ever done with Megadeth
^Shit dude, i forgot (like you said) the best marty solo with megadeth. God damn! that solo defines melodic, i read on his website that he improvised the whole thing too. Marty Friedman

i love the solo in a megadeth song called victory. i think marty and mustaine play parts one after the other. marty's part is wicked. that's my fav megadeth solo.
i also love the solo in foreclosure of a dream.

I am pretty sure that he only did the last one with feedback. In all the videos i have seen it is Friedman playing it, and i dont think Mustaine can come up with that, plus in a book i have it explains the solos theory and says it was marty.;)

Merty did the two slower solos and the little Spanish thing before ...The Punishment Due. ;)
P.S. Tornado of Souls is awesome and quite tricky to play.

megadeth is one of my fave bands but the singing took some getting used to. especially "sweating bullets". wow.

Mustaine might of played the fast solo but Marty's 2 solos are more complex and difficult.;) That little spanish lick is awesome!
