Eh, you just gotta be careful and follow the rules.

I'm pretty regular around there. You just gotta be careful as to not confuse nu metal and metalcore with metal, and don't make any recommendation threads.

I mean, if you knew the place a little better, you'd see why too. Here'd be the average day in order:

- Old threads continuing on
- Trivium thread, arguing, closed
- More old threads
- a7x vs Trivium thread, raping, closed
- "What's some good black metal?" thread, closed
- Old threads
- Green Day thread, mutilation, closed/deleted
- Lamb of God Thread, closed
- End with old threads

No lie man. It just gets old, the same old, same old illegal threads. It's like the equivalent to having one thread saying "Slash is 15 times more emotional than Steve Vai," another saying "Lolz Led Zeppelin Is ShrEAD!!" and another one saying "Can someone show me how to do alternate picking?" EVERY DAY. It just gets annoying.

If it weren't for those Metal Forum hard-asses, the hardcore n00blets would overrun the site and we'd all die from their flood of nonsense and whatnot that they keep getting reamed for. What most don't realize is that it is a strategic system of checks and balances :)

But the SF is a little bit nicer of an environment.....providing that you don't aggrovate the wrong people. ;)

Yeah, I understand the whole repeated thread point, but they didn't have to approach me as they did. Back when I joined, I made a first post in here about technique, but I didn't know about the technique thread. However, PooKoo kindly and calmly pointed out the technique thread in an understanding matter, and then the thread was shortly afterwards closed.

HOWEVER, in the metal forum, all I get is "what the fu*k you fu*kin dumbass, read the fu*kin thread, it's fu*kin at the top of the fu*kin page you fu*kin oron. Die motheru*ker."

I mean come on, that's a little TOO extreme, no matter what the circumstance.

So basically awhile back, I decided to try to learn to play the Just Friends peterson solo on guitar (transcribed by Win Den Herder), quit practicing it and trying to get it up to speed because of school and other things like that. Now that summer has come around and now that I've got a LOT of free time, I picked back up on learning it and trying to get it up to speed.

In the process of attempting to get this up to speed, I've discovered that it is near impossible to play extremly long complex consistantly fast lines on guitar without alt-picking (as opposed to eco-picking).

It just seems almost impossible not to get "locked in" (so to speak) and cramped while keeping the difficult lines consistant and in-time.

I've failed at eco-picking =(. Alt-picking here I come!!

Beckerism
06-19-2006, 01:20 AM
Odd? I've never noticed this before. Everyone's different though of course. :) What picking style do you use?

Erc
06-19-2006, 02:09 AM
If by picking style you mean motion, I use an oscillatory motion for the actual picking of the string, a rotary for the switching of strings, unanchored economy picking with a lot of inside picking.

That basically describes how I used to pick. I never had any trouble learning to play what I used to want to play (Yngwie, MaB, Petrucci, some Timmons etc.).

Sadly, not even practicing quarter notes at 50bpm could even get me the first 13 or so seconds up to speed 0_o. (did it for 4days if you're curious until I decided that there is a weakness in the chain thats not letting me be able to play at this speed cleanly)

I have a super-unhealthy obsession with Oscar Peterson. (and other jazz pianists, but mainly him) I'm trying to get some peterson-esque chromatic licks and what not into my playing and improvisation and now not everything is a simple 3/5/6 note per-string fast run.

What changing to alt-picking is giving me now is more "range" of motion, or at least its forcing me to use a larger range of motion (and therefore not getting the cramped feeling of almost constant inside-picking) and therefore increasing my percieved freedom of movement. With the increased percieved freedom my body loses some of the tension that I still end up unwillingly harboring. Whether or not I actually am more "free" is up to debate, I suppose I am since there is less inside-picking involved then there was previously.

Beckerism
06-19-2006, 02:15 AM
While you're at piano pieces, try to learn 'From Within' off of the Live Petrucci/Rudess CD. It should be really easy, once you get 3 prosthetic add on hands >_<.

well there have been some moments in the first round, but the knockout stage is where it's at. and blame England's playing on Eriksson's defensive strategies. I kinda am rooting for England, but now that Owen won't be able to play the remainder of the WC because of the injury he got in the match against Sweden, I have serious doubts whether England will make it thru to the quarter finals.

"Shawn Lane, like a lane, or carpool lane. Carpool relates to pool, which relates to a jacuzzi. Which rhymes with Pizocookie, a famous dessert food item, at a restaurant called BJ's. Ex-President Clinton got a bj from Monica Lewinski. Clinton's wife, Hilary became Senator of New York. New York is where Michael Romeo was born, thus, directly relating Shawn Lane and Michael Romeo."

Teh feckin work is teh balls. I started again today only 2 days after finishing my exams, and I couldn't go out tonight to celebrate finishing them with the rest of my year because I have to work tomorrow morning. Not only that, but the place I work in is under new management, the management of an asshat who I could tell straight away didn't like me due to my long hair. Fecker. Also, it looks like I'm only going to get three days a week, which isn't going to be enough for me to be able to afford the Cornford by the end of the summer. I cried when I figured that out. I did alot of extra work last summer that I didn't need to do as a favour to the the then manager, and now when I want a favour, it looks like I won't get it. Just lovely.

Bad as it is, everybody is telling me it will ge better, new manager doesn't know what you're capable of Tommy they say, when he does you'll get the hours they say. He damn well better. Thankfully, some of the other people that were there last year and needed me in often are still there, so chances are I may still be in demand. I've worked in almost every department, so I can really do anything in there, sales, customer services, helping out in the warehouse, whatever. Plus most of the people there will be taking their holidays in two weeks, so I'll most likely have to be in full time for those days, maybe he'll give me the hours I need after that. So all of you need to pray that he'll give me the hours so I can buy a Cornford, ok lads?

We still on? Btw, empty your PMs. Sorry to hear about this crap, also - being underestimated because of your youth and appearance is perhaps the frustrating thing in any career, when you've got the goods...

 WHY IS THIS

TheUltimateSin

Well, some of you might remember me talking about that burn on my arm not too long ago. I thought it wasn't that big a deal because it didn't look bad. But as it turns out, it affected the nerves running down to my fingers, so I am starting to have difficulty holding a pick. On top of that, I am starting to develope a nerve disorder of the hands that runs in my family, so I lose feeling in my fingers every now and then and occasionally in the entire hand.

That is terrible.
edit : I hope you've consulted a good doctor ( not a quack like Beckerism )

Give it some time. I think its too early to make a judgement. Go to a doctor.

TheUltimateSin

^Well, I'm thinking that the burn-related symptoms will dissipate as it heal, and it has been a little bit. That's not my primary concern. If this genetic disorder kicks in I'm screwed. My father has it and he's been going to the Mayo Clinic almost every day for the last week getting testing done. And that clinic is supposed to be one fo the best medical facilities in the world.

I'm really hoping that it goes dormant. I'd rather not have my life dream be done in by some stupid genetic hellstorm.

Dude, that sucks something fierce. I really hope you're ok. Good luck, not much more I can say than that.

Guys,in terms of amps, would you say that Marshall DSL/TSL's are worth looking at? I was slightly worried about the distortion o them, thinking I may have to add an overdrive pedal to them to get the sound I like (I've never hear either amp but my mate said tey didn't do dist too well.) anyone, have one/tried oe and would be able to tell me?

I remember trying one in a store and I didn't think it was too good. I didn't have much time to really dick around though.
