ok, here a noob question, how do i get my NPS or BPM? i know i have to use a metronome, but what speciafically do i do well play 16th notes at any bpm (which is 4 notes per beat) lets say you play 16th notes at 120 bpm the actual equation you can use is 120 times 4 divided by 60 and you get nps so bpm x 4/60=nps :) to make it easy just divide your bpm by 15 and you get notes per second if your playing 16th notes.. i hope that wasnt too confusing :p:

Can someone please check my maths on this one...
135bpm/60
64ths - 16notes per beat - hence 36nps?
I just calculated hands by bumblefoot and im still in shock, im not trusting myself to make that calculation right, could you check it out?

Lol, sadly, when i doublechecked, i found that actually, he was only playing 12 notes to the beat.
Darn, only 27nps! But so melodic, too.
Still, that beats everything but holdsworth and satch on the list.

I went and saw Vai last night. Holy Shit. They went on together a little bit too much, its not that they werent talented just at times they overdid it some. All of those men can freaking play like no other.
And I met Eric Sardinas, that dude was something completely new to me and I couldn't resist shaking his hand.

Well, I don't know if you have any Racer X cd's at the moment, but the one I bought first was Technical Difficulties. It has great riffs, and shred of course, but its very diverse. It goes from 17th moon, which has a real metal style riff, to BRO, which is Pauls rendition of Bach (BRO=Bach Rip Off). Then I bought Superheroes, and listened to it relentlessly for months. Its my favorite Racer X cd....ever...So I'd start w/ those two, then get into the older stuff, Extreme Volume, Second Heat etc... Before you know it, you'll have them all.
BTW, Racer X's most recent studio cd, Getting Heavier, is a good one too. But if you like Racer X only for Pauls solos, you might not like it as Paul backs off from the crazy stuff a little bit. (Still worth buying though)

pardon me? anyways, anyone know how to change the metronome on powertab? (The bps part) I copy pasted a part of serrana into a blank page, and the metronome should be 140, but in the new page its at something differnt, im guessing 90ish, so the song is played much slower, and if i change it to 32th notes instead of 16th, they are way to fast.

Hey, sorry if this has been asked before, but I don't have the time right now to read through 29 pages.
I just listened to Becker's version of 5th Caprice, and it's amazing. Unfortunatly, it sounds nothing like how I'm playing it. The tab in Guitar World has it as straight eigth ( or sixteenth ) notes. I forgot which it is.
However, Becker plays it in a very different way, much better way, IMO, but which way did Paganini play it? Because I learned it as straight notes without any rhythm.
Edit : I guess I listened to some other Becker song that someone named 5th Caprice. My bad. I got the correct version played straight through.

Random (stupid) question:
I downloaded a song titled Joe Satriani & Metallica - Instrumental from limewire. I didnt think it was really what it said but its a really good track. The tone is just like Satrianis and style's a lot like his too. Someone says a half of a word on the beginning of it (sounds a bit like russian  ) then it goes to this pretty fast riff. The song ends to something that sound like harmonics (not sure). I think it could be a demo tape or something, cause the quality isnt too good. Does anyone know what this song could be? I'd make a tab of the beginning of it if I wouldnt suck at tabbing so much.

heheh my first and only recording.
Go to the third track called "Death Session."
Prepare to want to turn off your speakers and track me down and kill me.
There's my friend on the vocals and drums, and me on guitar and "winding down" vocals. If you have a high enough pain threshold to withstand the song, I commend you.
It's basically just a very crappy snare drum rhythm and dissonant chords. If it weren't for the semi-fast acoustic guitar solo I wouldn't even post it.
Keep in mind, it's supposed to be a joke, so don't bash me too much(except if you want to bash my technique, feel free :))
EDIT:
BTW, I'm known as "Winston Churchill" on the site. And my friend "Minister of Scream" is actually a very good trumpet player, and therefore can hit some pretty high notes when he wants too(both vocally and trumpet-wise).

It's for a week. Anyways, Satriani is going to be there. WOW, Satriani for a week would be amazing. But, Satriani costing 1000 bucks? Come on, make it freeee.....

lol, that depends. Some people just play fast, but make music that most people wouldnt listen to unless forced to.
Others use their guitar skills to make mind-bendingly awesome music.
Basically, just look around these forums, check out satriani, vai, jason becker, frank gambale, marty freidman and yngwie malmsteen.
That'll give you an idea of the flavours that shred has to offer! Good luck with your playing, since i came here the peer group has made me see so many things as as simple as they really are, not unattainable levels of skill.

the most generic shred youll hear is michael angelo. his songs are blindingly fast and every song revolves around his speed. the most tasteful shredders are vai, satch, paul gilbert, becker, and the like.

^I personally think that Angelo (technique wise) is the most insane out of all of the shredders. That fact that he can play two guitars at once should be enough to satisfy the crowd, but he can do so much more than that. Not only does he play two guitars at once, but he shreds two guitars at once. Plus, he can pretty much play the guitar in any position that's humanly possible.
Not to mention he can back off and restrain himself when necessary.

Blabbermouth.net reports, Megadeth, Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan are among the musicians that are scheduled to perform in India before the end of the year. "The artists have confirmed their tours around the end of the year and Delhi will certainly be part of the plan for some of these stars. Plans are also underway for rock god Eric Clapton's show early next year," says Cyrus Gorimar, proprietor of Opium, the event management firm that is organizing the concerts, according to HindustanTimes.com.
Joe Satriani is scheduled to play in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore on May 13, 15 and 17 respectively. He?ll be accompanied by acknowledged musicians like Jeff Campetelli on drums, Matt Bissonette on bass and Galen Henson on rhythm guitar. "We are all very excited, as this is our first time in India. steve looks like one of those camp modern day men.
Cooley always looks really unhappy like a gay guy who desperately wants to come out of the closet.

I got bored so I saw how fast I could tap a single string wank.
Turned out to be 21.3 nps. Meh.
I just did 32nd notes at 160bpm.
(Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

not too bad, but dont forget pedal tones, arps and all that other interesting stuff to tap too...
And thats cooley's patented, "i pwn you, but im a nice funny guy" expression...theres a vid somewhere of him doing insane legato while doing that expressiong, then pretending to smash his 8 string...
And vai always looks like a slightly queer wizard, but the guitar and the wizard overcome the queer...there, they honestly look like a couple.

Ha ha, thats sad but true. Some of the pictures on his site are even worse as you've probably seen. But then he looks quite happy in the ones where he's with his daughter. I bet she doesn't get much attention though, seeing as Rusty must spend his life shredding.
Does anybody know why Rusty's selling his 9-string?

I'm hoping the next cd will be as varied and unique as all the others. You can't really confuse Passion and Warfare with Real Illusions, because they're so different. Vai doesn't redo his other cds on his newer cds, they're all different, I'm just hoping he keeps doing that.

Yeah but still, you can compare tracks from real illusions to similar work he has done, like k'm pee du wee sounds like boston rain melody or lotus feet like or the love of god.

every albumi is different, but has that signature vai--ness that would single him out in a room of a million guitarists.
i like freak show excess, it kept ringing in my head recently when I did a 6 hour marathon exam ( i am still alive ).

First post here i think :D
Hows it going guys? Anyway, I've never really been into shred, always had Surfing with The Alien and Crystal Planet (both I love) but never experienced other shredders apart from Satch and some Dream Theater (but the vocals annoy me)
So today I bought Steve Vai's Anthology which I'm liking, not music I can listen to every day but definately good.
Anyone want to recommend me some good shred along those lines? If there is any shred/metal please feel free to give it a mention.

^Look in the must haves thread for a general guide to shred albums.
I'd say check out Frank Gambale if you haven't heard anything by him. Some of his songs sound quite Satriani esque. Maybe try his 'The Great Explorers' album.

I got Surfing With The Alien for £5 (very cheap over here even though converted into other currencies it would be the normal price) i.e that would be just under $10 in US ($8 probably)

Alien Love Secrets for 10 dollars at a Barnes and Nobles which surprised me becuase usually their cds are like 20 dollars each no matter what artist it is.
