It's a thing my uncles friend (drummer from fugazi) set up, he gets a bunch of bands from a city, finds a condemned house, and has each band play one song in the house. They film it all, and then the house gets burned down. It's really a work of art, I've met the guy too, he's pretty crazy.

Too mainstream/indie (odd combo, i know), for most of you probably.
umm, mostly local indie bands, a couple local punk bands, but usually very pretty stuff, some great dc based bands on the dc set, and great portland bands on the portland one.
Portland one's got a band made of 10-12 year old girls that are really good, as well as a rap group.
Only bands off it I've actually heard of before were Sleater Kinney, The shins, Wilco, Ted Leo, and The Decemberists (absolutely amazing performance, whether or not you like them).

The shins are pretty amazing on it, sounds like old school british pop. Great harmonies.
Decemberists had:
A violinist,
And Accordianist
A guitarist/singer
A standup bassist (bowed also)
A mandolinist
And a drummerist playing with them.
And it was amazing.

Aaaaaaaah, well... No, not really.
The fake Suhr pics really had nothing to do with it, I had long known he was a little plagiarising asshole, I just didn't have the mod powers to enforce anything until some six months ago, so I promptly permabanned his little pathetic ass...

Billy Sheehan is a great musician.
Really, music boils down to personal taste, evaluated on a piece by piece basis. For example, I don't absolutely adore everything I've heard by Pastorius or Coltrane or Holdsworth, yet they are among my favorites.
One has to make a commitment to cultivating a personalized style based on what one wants to express as an individual. In my opinion, preconceptions of what any given style or instrument should do only hinder the process.

I dont like just shredding, I like it when bassists use the bass in more harmonical context, like what Jaco was famous for. I personally love the bass myself, there are lots of amazing players out there - Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Thierry Mineau, Kai Eckhardt to name a few.
Cheers.
Bass shredding (just like all things in music) has its place.

Oh i know, I love a lot of his solo work, but i find a lot of his "shred" solos, especially with vai, quite useless, to listen to at least. Lots of fun to watch, and I'm sure it's hella cool to see live.

I've always liked bass being played the way Sheehan does, it's always interesting to hear solos on instruments other than guitar in a band, like piano or drum solos too.

I like all aspects of bass playing, its just shredding on bass is often condemned by many musicians, not me it must be said, and i was just interested to see what the folks on here's opinions on the topic are. I have a lot of time for it, but I also have a lot of time for the likes of Stu Hamm's melodic/chordal work, Jaco's general ownage and Victor Wootens superb technique. Thanks.

bigfatbassman
01-01-2007, 06:27 PM
^^Yeh man, i tried a standard series fender jazz bass fretless and it was well good. And i agree, tastefullness is essential. Though i make an exception in Billy Sheehans case because he was the first of the "virtuoso" bassists (i.e Jaco, Wooten, Marcus Miller etc), that i was introduced to, so i have a bit of a soft spot for him, however i will admit he occasionally sacrifices musicality for sheer crowd pleasing antics. But hey, can't blame the guy! Anyway, yeah fretless adds a whole new dimension to my bass playing. Totally different sound and adds an extra challenge in playing.

Um, well... That song's completely different from most of their output, it's much more transparent rock. I think Origin of Symmetry is far and away their best album, but then again, it's nothing like Knights of Cydonia. Showbiz is brilliant if you dig relatively quiet, but intense songs - although it's not bereft of stompers either.
Absolution is so-so, imo. The start down the line of blunt lyrics and OTTnes at the expense of believability. But as you can see, plenty of opinion divided on that one. I'd reccomend, tbh, checking out some more of their stuff before doing anything!

Was going to bump the JB album thread but it contains more so here:
Hey Peeps,
Thank you for all your sweet wishes. I say again my "fans" are the coolest ever, man. Apparently you guys wrote to Guitar World Magazine about my song Altitudes, so sometime in the future they are going to put it on a CD that will come with the magazine and include the transcription. You all are special.
Peavey just told me they want to be the ones to make my JB numbered guitar. They are really gung ho. They want to make a hundred availble for people who want one. They want to make it exactly how I want it. They plan to debut it at the summer NAMM show. This is much better than the uncertainty of Jackson. Jackson did say they got many calls about it. Thank you guys. The Peavey will be a lot easier to get.
I am hoping my new CD will be finished in three months. I had been waiting for "stars" but pshaw. We are getting some awesome singers now. Dave Lopez, you are right, you have the coolest friends.
My autobiography is now moving thanks to Mike B. and Lyla. Lyla is now working on a book proposal for major publishers, from what I have written so far.
I had a great Christmas and New Year. I hope you all had good holidays. My favorite part of Christmas is hanging out with young kids; it can be magical. I gave each of my 5-year old twin neices their first little guitars with nylon strings. They loved them. They are the same age as I was when I got my first guitar.
My neice, Emma, really warmed up to me. She often rubbed my shoulder and pet me with a big smile. Sarah wanted to but she is really shy.
My 6-year old buddy, James, had a blast. I got him some legos and the first season of Pimp My Ride; he loves that show. Also the DVD "Cars" which we watched on Christmas Eve with the whole family. On New Year's Eve day, Serrana's 3-year old grand neice Alyssa, came and got a bunch of princess stuff from our family. Fun.
Hey, thanks for all the "goosebump" songs. I have heard about half of them before. I love Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Roy Buchanan, Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, and others that you mentioned.
Peace and love,
Jason

*cough* They do. Believe me, i've met 13 year olds play me under the table and are almost as comfortable with music theory. Let alone that guy who was just 20 and could keep up with lane's picking on power solos...

Yeah, I know. But alot of those child prodegies end up losing it, I dont know why. Like those countless youtube prodegies that play vivaldi at age 6 or something, and the piano kids and what not. But its ok, Im learning at my own pace, and thats fine with me as long as Im not too behind.

That's because they usually get a lot of pressure from their parents and lose the fun in playing the instrument. Whereas those who start playing later do it from their own will and are inspired by some guitarist that makes them to carry on with the instrument.

Do those child prodigies "lose it"? I doubt it very much...
Even so, once something's learnt to a certain degree, physical ability is the main limiting factor in reachieving that level of ability. Give them 3 weeks and they could be kicking your ass all over again.

I think they lose it, the fire dies out. Itll be like a robot playing, me thinks. The few ones that keep going are the ones that become greats, but at that age, it would be hard for them to keep doing the same thing since 6 or 7, till they die. Specially with everything that changes people, like pubery, high school, middle school, peer pressure, parental pressure, and just changes in interest. But yes, if they do persist, they eventually get what they deserve.

Yesh, but do you know any child prodigies who burn out? I know we're only really going to hear of the ones that don't burn out, as they leave more traces of their existance, but tbh, i honestly think this idea of yours comes from nothing. I cannot think of any child prodigies who burnt out, and i can think of a few hundred who didn't.
Where did you get this idea?

Regarding the child prodigy deal, I think that it depends on if their parents keep pressuring them to play or not and if they actually like the instrument itself. I have 2 friends that started playing instruments at a very young age, one was constantly playing piano and was writing pretty good music (well it was to my ears when I heard it at least) in 4th grade or something. Her parents stopped pressuring her and now she has simply stopped playing piano. The other friend, had some of the most pressuring parents ever, they installed a camera in his room so that they could make sure that he practiced at least 2-3 hours of violin a day. Now he still plays violin, taking lessons a few times a week (including friday after school), playing a lot in his free time and he's in an orchestra. His parents are still pressuring him. However I think that he still has a personal interest in playing violin, for example once me and some friends including him were going to the mountains to go snowboarding on a friday after school. He had violin lessons and therefore couldn't take the same train as us. He ended up taking a night bus up and came to the train station at 2 in the morning, and he didn't even consider asking his teacher if he could miss this one practice. That, I think was personal will and interest, not parents pressuring. So basically I think child "prodigies" burning out or not, depends very much on parents pressuring, but there still has to be an element of personal will to play for the prodigies not to burn out.
(Sorry about drifting off about it times)

I doubt the allmighty Jason Becker was pressured by his parents.
And yea like insideac I get bummed out seeing all these kids play me under the table :p:
I went to an audition for a music college and lets just say I hate the air of competition. I don't know but it seems that guitarists are a competitive breed, there's some kind of underlying ego factor :peace:

^Yeah good point, it's not very often that parents pressure kids to play guitar.

Is anyone else here a major fan of "Steve Stevens" guitar work???? I bought one of his albums with Tony Levin (LTE and King Crimson) and Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa)... Stevens guitar work is insane, I didnt realise how versitile he was, like i was always a fan of Billy Idol, but i thought Steve was just that sorta guitarist, not versitile....... Anyone else with me???
