I doubt the allmighty Jason Becker was pressured by his parents.
And yea like insideac I get bummed out seeing all these kids play me under the table :p:

I went to an audition for a music college and lets just say I hate the air of competition. I don't know but it seems that guitarists are a competitive breed, there's some kind of underlying ego factor :peace:

I think for me, its because I cant stand to see myself working for 3 years harder than everyone that Ive known to play an instrument, and then I go to a wide area and all these unseen kids that I didnt expect, show up and own. makes me feel like im secluded from teh rest of the world, and my playing goals arent realistic.

Is anyone else here a major fan of "Steve Stevens" guitar work???? I bought one of his albums with Tony Levin (LTE and King Crimson) and Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa)... Stevens guitar work is insane, I didnt realise how versitile he was, like i was always a fan of Billy Idol, but i thought Steve was just that sorta guitarist, not versitile....... Anyone else with me???

Oh my! That would be quite boring...

I listen to everything except emo and hardcore, and there is a bit of tribal rhythm oriented music that I don't find all that interesting. My favorite of what I listen to is usually orchestral, mostly tracks grabbed from various sound-tracks of games and movies. Some of my favorite composors are, Koh Ohtani, Nobuo Uematsu, Klaus Badelt, John Ottman, and Hans Zimmer.

I listen to a lot of 'new age' piano music lately. Windham Hill records type of stuff. And also a lot of jazz like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk. Ummm soundtracks like LOTR and Harry Potter. Latin music, classical of course, not much classic rock at all, a fair amount of power metal. Mostly just solo piano stuff lately... it's so relaxing in stressful times.

Good work, keep it up, slowly increase the metronome and before it you will be sweeping 16ths at 240bpm...... Plus atleast your doing it the right way and will be playing CLEANLY, unlike 98% of the YouTube shredders, sweeping their sloppy 16ths.

Yes, i have problems.

Haven't you heard the saying that there are only three families of chords? Direct quote from Joe Pass there, by the way. You can have a dominant chord that's altered in everyway while still being a dominant chord and it'll still have that function, i.e. an alt chord.

The extensions don't change the functions of the chords. Only what you play over it according to theoretical guidelines.

Alrighty then... But Joe Pass still kicks Cor's ass when it comes to jazz theory. Cor is more of a classical bloke.

And I'll still trust what a master musician that has ages of experience like Joe over a bloke on the internet, I'm afraid :p:

Freepower

I know Cor's a classical bloke, but there's as much to be learned from either - if i hear that a #5 allows a chord to do X in classical theory, i'll try it out and if it works and i'll keep it. Why take jazz theory as the correct theory?

And i'd take Joe over Cor if i knew Joe better, but i don't, i know Cor better. Still, i trust Agnew, so i'll email her about this.

I was playing one at guitar center and loved it, it's actually what i'm looking at currently.
And as far as heavy, not very, not very heavy at all. Definitely not heavy enough that i'd lose all the definition in my tone, I just want that nice humbucker crunch, and that's what's turning me off strats.

HammerForce

RGA's look quite sweet. A mate of mine has alow(ish) end PRS clone called a vintage (24frets fixed bridge, holds tune really well),anyways, he modded it a bit (put in a couple of JB's and fiddled with the intonation a bit). Anyways now this guitar has the sweetest tone out of most I've heard, I'd say it sound better distorted than my mates Les Paul Standard. Maybe you could do something along those lines. I don't really care very much for Schecters personally.

OE SATRIANI ANNOUNCES 2007 G3 TOUR

Celebrated Tour Continues with Three Legendary Players This Spring

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The 2007 incarnation of Joe Satriani's popular G3 tour will kick off on March 14th in Phoenix starring SATRIANI, JOHN PETRUCCI and PAUL GILBERT. The tour will play selected dates in North America throughout March and April. The starting tour itinerary follows with more dates TBA shortly.

The 2007 tour marks the 5th North American G3 run and the 12th G3 tour worldwide since its inception. The first G3 tour, featuring Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai, played to sold-out crowds throughout October and November, 1996 and was followed by successful treks in Europe, South America, Japan and Australia. The most recent North American G3 tour, in 2003, showcased Satriani, Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen and was documented in the platinum DVD G3 Live in Denver. Other platinum DVD's include the 1996 run and the 2005 Japanese tour with Vai and Petrucci.

JOE SATRIANI has been a worldwide guitar hero since his 1986 breakthrough album, Surfing With The Alien. Over 10-million albums and CD's later, in addition to 13 Grammy nominations including this year for his latest studio release Super Colossal, Joe continues to push the envelope of modern rock guitar playing. In October 2006, Satriani released Satriani Live!, as both a double audio CD and double DVD package. In addition to breathtaking, nine-camera footage of Satriani and his band tearing it up for more than two hours at their Anaheim stop during this year's Super Colossal tour, Satriani Live! captures them backstage and onstage on the last stop of that trek, with comments from fellow guitar legend Eric Johnson, candid moments with members of Joe's band and crew, and one amazing surprise unleashed by the audience that night in San Francisco.

Joe's G3 cohorts, JOHN PETRUCCI and PAULGILBERT, are each recognized as brilliant players - both as soloists and within the bands they are known by. John is the founding member and lead guitarist for Dream Theater, recording eight albums with the band, including their sophomore effort, 1992's Images and Words. The album proved to be a breakthrough commercial success as the song "Pull Me Under" became a surprise hit on both MTV and rock radio. John is also involved in several side projects including Liquid Tension Experiment with Tony Levin, Age of Impact and even a Sega Saturn game called Necronomicon. In 2005, John was involved in three releases. A solo album, Suspended Animation, Octavarium with Dream Theatre and he was included on the G3 Live in Tokyo CD and DVD.

Paul first became known for his work with Racer X and went on to platinum success with Mr. Big who topped the pop charts in 1992 with the ballad "To Be with You." Mr. Big disbanded in 1996, and a year later Gilbert made his solo debut with King of Clubs; Flying Dog followed in 1998, trailed by Beehive Live in 1999, Alligator Farm in fall 2000 and Get Out Of My Yard in August 2006.

A recent poll of the Top 100 Greatest Rock Guitarists ranked SATRIANI at # 7, PETRUCCI at # 11 and GILBERT at #14.

SATRIANI stated simply, "I can't wait to hit the stage with John and Paul, they are two of the scariest, most amazing players I've ever heard!"

Continuing with the same successful formula as in years past, fans will be treated to individual sets by each guitarist with their own bands before joining Satriani and his band on stage for an all-star jam session. As with previous G3 tours, special guest guitarists will be invited to join the jam at select dates around the country. Past guests have included Neal Schon, Gary Hoey, George Lynch, Billy Gibbons, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Fripp and Brian May.
Finally!!!!
Too bad that they aren't coming to Europe though:(.

I never said that was a bad thing.

And besides, i should perhaps i should have toned it down a bit to something more like "Petrucci has this amazing style, it's like he's a skinny guitar nerd trying to be a new Kerry King"...

And i don't personally think Petrucci has added anything new to electric guitar. A lot of fans, perhaps, and certainly high profile.

In case you hadn't noticed, i'm quite fond of DT. :)

Hey everyone,

I am glad you dug the Guitar World interview. They edited it a bit to fit the space, so in the future I will put the whole thing up here. Thanks for your cool questions. You are all great, man.

Thank you for sticking up for my homely ass in regard to the comments on EBay. Don't worry, I didn't even read them. I sho nuf don't have time for ignorance.

I did meet Dave Mustaine years ago. I was walking with a cane. I went to a Megadeth show when Marty first joined. I went backstage and everyone was way cool. After a while there was a conversation between the band and road crew that I couldn't hear. Finally Mustaine asked me if Marty was a good driver. I said, "Oh, no." Marty and I had just been to a store and he accidentally scraped a parked car. He said, "I drive good but I am not great at parking." I cracked up at that. Later I felt bad because Marty was trying to talk the crew into letting him drive one of the equipment trucks. I had ruined his chance.

The only counterpoint part in my song "Air" that was played on just one track was the section after the really slow, simple melody.

I was going for the Colts and Saints. Bummer about the Saints, but man, what a great game for the Colts. I like New England, but they had their glory.

The Peavey guitar is coming along. The proceeds will go to me and ALS research.

Peace and love to you all,

Jason

The Random board /b/, named after the Nijiura board of Futaba Channel, is 4chan's most popular board by far, according to statistics which have been released by 4chan staff, as well as the sheer post count: As of January 13, 2007, /b/'s post count has surpassed 19,000,000 posts with most of the other boards still struggling to break 250,000; the anime and video games boards (/a/ and /v/, respectively) are the only other boards to have accumulated more than 1,000,000 posts. After /b/'s 18,000,000th post was made on December 27, 2006, it took only 17 days to accumulate another 1,000,000 posts on /b/, meaning /b/'s posting rate has now surpassed an average of more than 58,800 posts per day. The humor of /b/'s many residents (also known as "/b/tards"[2] ) has spawned enough intricate and hard-to-follow inside jokes that most newcomers find many posts incomprehensible. In addition, /b/ is known to officially have "No rules", save for a ban on illegal content and invasions of other websites (these being site-wide rules).

Ok. So, here's my situation. I need new picks. I'm down to one. All I can get from the stores around here are Fender Mediums, which is ok because I like Medium picks. They fit my hand right and work right for the majority of what I play(although I have used a Dunlop Heavy pick for some things). So, I was wondering what brand and gauge would be right, given those prerequisites. I am going to order them online, of course, since no one near me carries anything decent. Thoughts? Any help from you guys who know your shit would be appreciated. :)

Well, if it affects the situation much, I use an Essex(Gibson knockoff) Les Paul with 9's(occasionally 10's).

KurrptSenate
01-30-2007, 04:58 PM
well, what I was getting is...

Say for my 7 string guitar, tuned down a full step, I put 12s or 13s on it, due to it being a slightly larger "scale", and the fact that tuning down relieves string tension.

but yea, if you're in standards 9s or 10s are perfectly fine.

I stay with hard picks, considering there is really not much margin for error. I find it really easy to get a feel for how my pick is striking the string, at what angle it makes contact, and how much of the pick is extended under the string, like for attack.

I feel with some of the lighter picks, the way it bends, you really don't know what angle its making.

IDK. Like I said, its really personal preference.

I choose DR strings so I don't have to change them. I can usually get away with changing strings once every six months, since they are coated

Yes, exactly.

Actually, if you want a challenge, here's one for you. Play the Sultans of Swing with two picks, both held at the same time in your picking hand. Now, use the soft pick for the rhythm parts, switching to using the hard pick and your fingers for the leads and fills. I've seen it done., and it's something I'm trying toe get the hang of myself lately.

Cheating.

The idea is that you become fluid at changing picks, so that you can get a good rhythm tone, and controlled leads. The hybrid picking, well, that's just to challenge your coordination a bit. You'd need to leave the pick down somewhere, then pick it back up, while leaving the other down. This way, you just one fluid switch while holding both.

Actually, aside from that, I've mostly been working on my timing lately.

I know. But you're still fags.

So? What if I like gay porn?

I like the idea, i was just joking about.

What part of timing? Note groupings, time sigs, phrasing, off beat playing, exact on-the-beat-ness?

Don't leave us hanging, dude!

Well ye see, my Dad's a drummer, and a ****ing good one at that. My rhythm has never quite lived up to his expectations of Steve Gadd on a guitar type awesomeness. So everything, really.

That's where the humour of the joke was intended to lie - Yngvie's "Canon in D" is to the Speed Metal Symphony that was referened to just 2 posts before. Or Steve Vai to Eruption, or Joe Satriani to the Top Gun Theme Song.

But obviously, it failed horribly. v_v
