Any1 sing w/ their diaphram? I have, but I prefer my throat vocals for some reason. I think my throat vocals are more raw and energetic, which is perfect for my band. When I use my diaphram, my voice sounds a bit too "pop" for my taste.

Announcement:
So after a quick talk with Resi about it, I've decided to host the shred forum's Second Annual Awards program. But there is one prerequisite: We must have a little more support over it this time around. Keep in mind that this is just a fun little thing for our humble forum and all is meant in good fun, not to be taken too seriously. It won't be for several months yet, seeing as we need to complete the passage of a year from our first one before we can have a second, but I thought I would take the liberty of announcing it now to see how much support we can get on it over the next couple of months. I still have the list of all of the awards we used for the last one, and I will be open to suggestions for new ones when we get this rolling(I will make a thread for suggestions like I did last year). As with last year, I will be counting the votes again this year pending we have it again, so no one needs to worry about who is counting all of the votes. I had no problem doing it last year, and have no problem doing it again this year.
So if anyone is interested in supporting the idea again for this year, post so in here and PM me(in case I miss your post in this thread) and I will keep track with a list of members via MS Word.

I just started coming here recently and I found that award thread from last year you're talking about (with my handy dandy search bar) and it seems like a fun idea to me, but what if I don't know what to put for a category like "least helpful user" or "best SF moment"? Should I just leave them blank?

Yes. That will help keep the votes as accurate as possible. You don't have to vote for every catagory, just the ones you can.
And I must also add, excellent use of the search function to locate the thread :)

You can listen some samples on Guthrie's MySpace. Otherwise, I'd recommend to buy the album. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone in SF who wants to share Govan's music for free.

Paul has a new HSS guitar?
Yup. It's pretty much a Pgm 301, just with a neck single coil, an tilt neck joint and a painted white neck.
it weird to see him playing marshall... but as long as his playing sound equally good you don't hear me complaining.
I got my tickets for the show in tilburg 30th may... Finally gonna see my hero!
Bruce didn't play along at your show? I heard he was gonna play along this tour!
Bruce couldn't come along on the tour due to "budget issues" or something like that. I'll try to find the statement he made on his website.
EDIT: It's no longer on his website, but this is the statement that he made:
The band members are:
Me: Lead Guitar, Lead Vocals
Mike Szuter: Lead Bass, Lead Vocals
Jeff Bowders: Lead Drums
Emi Gilbert: Lead Keyboards, Lead Vocals
P.S. I want to thank Bruce Bouillet for playing incredible guitar on my Japan and G3 tours this year. I had previously announced that Bruce would be playing guitar on my tour of Europe as well. Due to budget constraints I won't be able to bring Bruce this time. I'm sorry for any confusion my first announcement may have caused. I was so excited about touring in Europe that I made the announcement before I had all the details. I'll try to be more careful next time!
I guarantee that Mike, Jeff, Emi and I will still ROCK HARD. My guitar hands are seriously warmed-up from G3, and we are adding several new songs to our show specially for Europe! And again, thanks to Bruce. We will play together again someday!
I also want to thank everyone from Europe who sent their song requests to me. I have added many songs to our show that I have rarely played live before. You asked, so I'm happy to play them! I'll see you soon with an electric guitar in my hands and a giant pedalboard at my feet.
LET'S ROCK.

05-21-2007, 04:16 PM
^Oh yes. I have almost died twice within the last week.
To understand the visual for the first incident, you must know these key pieces of information: Most everyone who lives in my small town works in a larger town about 6 miles away, so there is a nice stretch of highway between the two towns. I live in an area that is mostly farmland, and it is quite hilly so the highways weave around the hills. Which means many curves on the road.
Earlier last week when on my way back from dropping a friend off at work, I was coming around a corner on the highway chugging along at a steady 65 mph. Maybe 300 feet ahead of me, coming at me around this corner at the same speed, was a semitruck trying to pass another semitruck. Both had full-length trailers. Some of you might realize how long it takes one semitruck to pass another, and thus would see my predicament. So I had to slam on my brakes and try pulling off the road as far as I could without going into the ditch and watch these two things whiz past me only seconds later.
Incident #2 occured just last night when I almost had a heart attack that could have killed me.

out of curiosity has anyone played the JS100? the one with the Edge III bridge? as opposed to the higher end JS1000/1200 which have Edge Pros?
I mean the only reason I'm not looking to invest in the JS100 is because of the bridge. I had an Ibanez RG350DX which I recently sold off.. playing on it was frustrating - the playability was flimsy and even lightly resting your hands on the bridge would cause the pitch of the notes to alter, muting seemed to be terribly hard.
And now if the JS100 or even the higher model have similar bridges, I'm not sure they'll ever be compatible with my style of playing - the RG350DX seemed to be tailor made for legato playing. Any thoughts on this?
On the side note, I'm looking to invest in the P44 from Parker, the guitars are made in Korea but assembled and set up in the US. Incredibly versatile guitars, and from the research that I've been doing, they seem uber hip.
Alternatively, I've been licking my lips everytime I've gone on the Carvin page and looked at the Allan Holdsworth signature H2 models. Those guitars seemed to have been made my God herself (PJ) and perfected for playing by a demi-god. I'm just afraid that it might cater solely to a jazz-fusion oriented sound, which though not bad by any means, may dictate what I play too much - which I dunno is good or bad.
Anyway, if any of you guys have either played any of the above 3 guitars, your feedback on them will be greatly appreciated.
garden of grey
05-22-2007, 12:56 AM
Avoid the edge III all together.
I don't care what else is in the guitar, unless you are willing to spend another $400 to get a decent bridge + routing in there, don't do it.
The thing will stay in tune for half a year, tops. For a cheaper guitar with an OFR, you could look into Carvin. For about $800 you can start out with an OFR on most style bodies of guitars.

I'd like to see more big band work in shred, not really jazz or fusion, something more classical, but not neo classical. unless the lines are really well thought out, I need a big band to really keep me intrested. Like zappa, with the xylophones rolling up and down and a little guitar riff in the middle, with a bass line complimenting it underneath, doubled vocal harmonies. keyboards giving ambience, some wierd saxophone or flute lead melody and the drums keeping a sexy rythmn in the background, makes me feel like solo guitar is so thin.
Also actually writing this stuff is the most fun anyone can have imo.

What's that thing called when you take your fretting hand and move it really fast from below the fretboard to above it and hitting strings? It sorta looks like you're slapping it but I don't know. MAB does it in speed kills.

He does it at like 1:49.
Thats his bloody "over under" technique, or something with that sort of name. It isn't really a technique it's just a trick.
Heh...the only good thing about that speed kills video is around 2:40 - 2:50 where it starts reminding me of F-zero.

Still talk to him on aim sometimes.
He writes techno, like me, rollerblades, and listens to death metal still.
Does he still play guitar?

I found out today that one of the girls in my class' cousin plays tuba in TSO.
Not a fan of emo, it's mostly the vocal aspect of it, it's a little thin for my taste, and I much rather prefer a more "rounded" tone.
BTW Getting your wisdom teeth pulled seriously sucks. =( I really REALLY hate being drugged up.

wisdom teeth don't have to come through at all, some people get them in their 40's.
and to make this on shred topic, hitting your wisdom teeth with a tuning fork plays the xavian scale backwards.

Paris Hilton's "Paris"
Adam uses guesses, misinformation and outright lies to review music he's never heard.
by Adam Brown
It's an unfortunate reality in modern music that sometimes great albums go completely unnoticed. Sadly, that will probably be the case with Paris, the riff heavy debut album from little known hard rock newcomer Paris Hilton. Recorded on a shoestring budget using her own money (reportedly earned while working at a hotel in some capacity), "Paris" is nothing short of a modern rock masterpiece. An unrelenting, uncompromising vision of what rock and roll in the 21st century should be. Unfortunately, it's that failure to compromise and conform to the pre-packaged pop music standards of today that will ultimately spell doom for this album. Commercially, anyway. In a world where whorish heiresses are famous just for being famous, and ****ty actresses crank out multi-platinum ****ty albums, there is no room on the charts for a scrappy indie rock phenom like Paris Hilton. And that, my friends, is a tragedy.
Throughout it's 11 devil horn worthy tracks, Paris hearkens back to better days when rock and roll ruled the world. The opening track, "Turn It Up", is a tour de force of memorable riffs, face melting guitar solos and an anthemic chorus on par with Queen's "We Will Rock You". It's the kind of song that starts bar fights. It's mosh pit energy serves as the perfect segue into "Fightin' Over Me", a balls to the wall rock and roll pain train filled with punk rock distortion and heavy metal attitude. And that train never stops rolling for the remainder of the album. Yeah!!
While Hilton's songwriting abilities are practically unmatched in modern music, it's her guitar prowess that really stands out. Earlier this year, a popular rumor spread via the internet amongst Hilton's small but passionate fanbase. According to the story, she sold her soul to satan in exchange for guitar lessons from the resurrected corpse of Jimi Hendrix. I can't vouch for the authenticity of this now famous urban legend, but after listening to "Heartbeat", the opening track on side two of Paris, it sure seems plausible to me. The song is an epic, 11 minute display of guitar shreddery that has to be heard to be believed. Remember that scene in that "Crossroads" movie where Ralph Macchio has a guitar duel with that old black dude that turns out to be the devil? Well, imagine if that scene ended with Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking Macchio AND the devil in the face, stealing their guitars, selling them and then using the money to hole up in a seedy motel with four Thai hookers and a pound of blow for the weekend. Yeah, "Heartbeat" is that awesome. Yngwie Malmsteen, you've been warned.
With all of this going for it, you would expect Paris to dominate the charts for months to come. But this is 2006, and rock is dead. Or at least it's dead to anyone looking for real rock on the radio. The rappers and "actresses" have taken over those airwaves and aren't letting go anytime soon. But there are still great rock and roll albums out there, and Paris is one of them. Just don't expect to hear about it on Entertainment Tonight.

a fair bit, yes. Not all of it's bad, and old emotional hardcore (fugazi style) is great sometimes.
Not a serious pleasure, but a guilty one, aye.
Plus, trance >>>>>> all forms of techno.(imo)
You have wisdom teeth up yet? I thought you were younger than me and mine aint proper up. I'm 18 btw, nearly 19.
I'm 16, they were "impounded third molers," and although I'm not very sure on what it actually means, I'm under the impression that they form so they are partly buried (??) and end up popping up at an angle and since had just finished my braces a year ago, we had them surgically removed, meaning plenty of sedation and numbing. (they would have crammed my recently aquired straight teeth)

i dig Jimmy Eat World, and then someone told me that they are emo, and then i was confused. But it's good stuff. Emo music is ok, there's worse out there.
Although "emo" seems to be the overly played in thing these days.

psychedelic trance (goa trance/downtempo/ambient/progressive) folks, that's where it's at.
It's amazing how many serious guitar players (eg. Steve Hillage of Gong) or Simon Posford (Hallucinogen/Shpongle) just dropped a lotta acid and took to electronic music. Jim Morrison had once prophesized about how a single person would be using technology to create the most innovative and interesting music.
It pisses me off thus, when people diss Satch's "Engines of Creation" for example.

actually house music is favored over trance (let alone psytrance) in clubs or parties. of course if you're talking about raves, then psytrance rules. I think when people think of or listen to trance music initially - the reaction is the same as when a newcomer or a non-listener is exposed, to say, metal. but if one listens to it, one starts discerning the different layers of sound, and the sophisticated melodies and arrangements that are going on. and on that note, a lot of death metal or grindcore artists, produce dark-psy trance music.
Resi, now you must die. seriously, listen to Shpongle (any damn album) or Hallucinogen, especially the album called "In Dub". Alternatively if you don't dig either too much, you can always try taking the backdoor to psytrance, by listening to the Disco Biscuits or Ozric Tentacles (both I recommend to the highest degree).
