I was curious enough to further expand my shred collection, and happened upon a guy called Joe Stump.

*giggles like a 5yr old at his name*

The music's alright, for an outright Ingvay clone, but I can't help but think of some very negatives words for this...

Sorry, but the look on his face says nothing but "DUUUUHHHHHH, I'M RETAWWWDED AND I CAN PLAY GEETAWWW!!!" to me. I can actually sense sadness in those puppydog eyes... There's something intensely sorrowful about his expression in that pic.

The classical theme in Under the Influence by Rusty is extremely fun to play it on guitar, and I've only learned the first little bit! Very good for my controlled mid tempo picking, which I need to improve on.

EDIT: Those 3 string sweeps that come after the picking part seem ok for me to attempt later @ 75% speed, 137bpm. This song rocks for technique training lol.

If it's a "Cliffs of Dover intro tribute" I'd guess that it's Shawn's tribute to EJ. Shawn used that little lick a lot. Imo, he plays it too fast for it to sound cool. Otoh, they influenced each others fast pentatonics. :)

Then I'm guessing you would know about this:

"Actually, for all we know it may have been the other way around. Shawn and Eric had known each other for many years.... Shawn's grandma (whom he lived with for most of his life) even recalls Eric Johnson coming over to the house to see shawn as early as 1979-ish (as her memory serves). Eric used to check out Shawn's playing way back then... even though Eric 'made it big' as a solo artist before Shawn did."

I think guthrie is very jekel and hyde in that his rock and jazz sides tend to keep seperate from each other alot of the time, yes its jazz rock, but he generally splits the two and this solo of album of his was his answer to the rock section, which alot of people find a dumbed down version of his playing (which it isn't imo)

Something I dislike about Guthrie's playing is that he is so capable and wry that I never feel he's addressing anything he really cares about musically. I get that he's making music for it's own joy, fo sho, but it's like trying to get to the emotional core of someone who's really adept in conversation and doesn't want you to get there. :p:

Discuss?

DaFjory
11-30-2008, 05:27 PM
Sort of Holdsworth-like, I guess. He makes music for himself, not for others? Maybe that's why he's not as big Satch and co, who strive (deep down) to make music for the guitar-loving masses in order to sell.

There is a documentary on horowitz, or maybe just famous pianists in general that I saw a portion of once, and there was a commentator, a pianist, when addressing horowitz, said something of the likes 'there is something about perfection and artistry that are contradictory...'

Maybe that is what you mean?

Freepower

^ not at all, really.

What I mean is that Guthrie is so adept at expressing himself, and so musical when expressing petty ideas (like being hungover) - that he can "avoid the subject" deftly with his music. Sure, he can play a great lick or two that expresses a "hangover", or the joy of enjoying some "skunk" with his friends, and he can play beautiful, beautiful music - but can he play "death in the family"? Can he play "unrequited love"? Can he play "lust"?

Can Guthrie tackle something too big to be funny to him?

I suppose that's the core of the issue. I've found that the more I can play well enough to make people laugh (eg, with silly outside lines, parodies, lighthearted melodies...) - the less I can find the courage to really tackle what's important to me within my music. I noticed this in Guthrie's playing before I could play properly, btw, I'm just noticing now that I have the same problem I believe him to have.

I think this is why I can listen to vai with more sincerity than guthrie, hes got the humour in his playing and while his technique may not match up to guthries flawlessness he always trys to produce something emotional and 'bigger than him'

I even asked the legato master himself as to when he's getting something new out, and he said "hopefully sometime next year" (this was November '07). If only I would've gone to see him again for that September date at the same venue... The same question would've awaited him, but this with my digicam so that I could've done that Shawn Lane thing - "My Idol, Allan Holdsworth! The greatest!"—"Not really..." :p:

In my humble opinion, the world needs more eccentric guitar albums more than it needs guitar ballads. I'd rather hear Guthrie play than Steve Vai.

^ If only because between the late 70's and early 90's the amount of ballad guitar albums produced went into frenzy and now the world is loaded down with them.
I admire both players greatly though and don't really group vai into ballady nonsense, more like ballady eccentricity (can't call RI:R anything different). Guthrie lacks any kind of speciality, hes just a guy playing really amazing guitar, nothing behind his personality or songs other than the obvious.

I think Erotic Cakes and Garsed's Big Sky start off almost identically - compare Waves to Undoing; I always get them confused! They're uncannily similar with that main melody IMO. Either Guthrie decided to rip off that melody and run away with it, or it's just conincidence.

Randomly out of the blue today, I learned sweep taps. Still rough around the edges but I got it acceptably clean @ sextuplets 120bpm. Inspired by the Concerto F#min theme, and I came up with a bunch of cool original licks by myself too =D.

Of course, my sweeps are still crap but I think I'm getting there....moving progress from 3 string to 4, not too much of a problem. Got greedy and went for the 5 string sweep and failed.

Think I'm going to learn the lyrical solo in When the Water Breaks @ bar 337 soon...and gotta finish learning the Biaxident solos...ahhhh I want to play guitar but I gotta sleep!!!

Well I'm doing 3 (moving onto 4 atm) string sweeps with an extra note tapped at the top, like this.
|-------14-19-22-14------
|----15---------------15----
--16---------------------16-

My sweeps are crap as in I can't do 5 or 6 string sweeps yet, but my 3 strings are respectable now and adding the D string is going pretty well.

Nacho, I personally use(d) the following for my sweeps.

Roughly in the order of increasing difficulty in my opinion...
Bar 71 of Altitudes - JB
Bar 150 of Cask of Amontillado - Michael Romeo
Concerto main theme- Cacophony
Towards the Dead End intro - Children of Bodom.

Slowing down faster passages also generally works. I'm learning those 3 string sweeps in Under the Influence @ 75% speed now and it's coming along nicely and sounds pretty good so far.

This is more metal than shred, but any opinions on Jeff Loomis' Zero Order Phase?

I find it quite one-dimensional and the production has those awful drums and sounds like the lead is extremely distant. Still not a huge fan of the lead tone, but I'm getting used to it.

It's good in small doses though. Jeff's leads have Cacophony written all over them.

Definitely look into the Guilty Gear soundtrack, made by a Japanese guy who's a metal nut. My personal favorite is this one. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rGetImTgyFA

Some of the Melty Blood ones are good too, but are more game-y, if you know what I mean. This one has a great neo-classical piano/harpichord intro. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2PqfbmwUKg&feature=related

Mainly the Rich Ward comments.

Just because someone doesn't do tap solos and sweep picking in every song does not make them a bad guitar player. It's about the feeling and emotion you put into the song that matters. I'm just as happy with Daron Malakian's down tuned riffs as I am with Eddie Van Halen's tap solos. It's just a matter of the style you play and the emotion you put into it.

And stuff like this.

I really wish Brett Garsed would put out more solo stuff. My latest purchase of the new year was his Big Sky album (the first track of which, I still say, sounds practically identical to Waves by Guthrie Govan!), and I'm loving it even more than when I had it lying around as a download. There's something original about it, yet not quite off-the-scale different - it fits in nicely with the Vais, Satches and Gilberts, but has a pleasant vibe throughout. Trinity, in particular, has these ominous/foreboding melodies early on that shiver me right up and down.

Brett rules.

can anyone give me some suggestions for some decent 80s superstrats to look for?

Ideally I'd like a maple neck, bright colours and a weird pickup arrangement but anything that screams 80s is good.

guitars along the lines of the Kramer pacer, BC rich gunslinger, old style ibby RGs, Charvels, Peavey vandenbergs etc.

I'd start a thread in EG about it but tbh this is just for me to waste time looking for them rather than a serious hunt for a new (sort of) guitar. If I found one for a decent price then I'd be all over it but I'm hardly gonna save up and hunt one down if you know what I mean.

so... yeah, suggestions plz

I've very recently started advertising myself for guitar lessons and it made me think 'how can I be the best darn guitar teacher ever, hut dang' so I thought, the usual, just know how to play every song everyone ever brings to you. Now in 90% of cases these songs will be easy and learnable on the spot by ear, or at most I'll have to spend an hour or so out of the day learning it for the next weeks lesson. Even though 90% of the songs will be easy, players tend to have really varied intrests and the idea of having to learn a completely new piece of music maybe multiple pieces every week filled me with a kind of horrid fascination. Alot of people do this kind of thing on their own, but I'm not one of those, so actually being forced to play such a wide range of music makes me giddy to think about.

I guess I have to pose the question to everyone out there who teaches, do you feel the benefits of being in such a demanding position?

Freepower
01-21-2009, 07:22 PM
Yes, definately. I've arranged "Stacey's Mom" for 3 guitars and I've arranged the Spongebob Squarepants theme for 1. Fun times!

Although you need a few stock one string riffs for the complete beginners. :)

It's also a really good idea to be able to create a whole "simple song" on the spot, preferably easy to play and preferably in a rock style. It's great for just jamming out lyrics.

Whenever my school has the next pupil concert I think I'll put up some vid clips from my best groups, you wouldn't believe how much energy there is in some kids screaming nonsense over powerchords. :p:

what do you do for beginners, just try and teach them something simple that sounds cool?

Freepower
01-21-2009, 07:52 PM
Well it depends on age, prior experience, personality etc - and if they have a favourite song or artist you can arrange for them that's great, but these are useful fallbacks.

http://www.justguitar.co.uk/articles/z-not-published-yet/playing_songs_song_list.php

Btw, can you sing at all? I'm a terrible, terrible singer, but I find it does help get the students into it - and it usually gets them to sing too, because they can't be much worse than me. :p:

I've attached some files I recently did up because I'll be starting with 8 new pupils tomorrow with a new music school - these sheets are always useful for beginners. :)

Axegrinder#9
01-21-2009, 08:06 PM
hmmm the one thing that kind of proves to be an impediment to teaching and learning, is when beginners come and ask you to show them a bunch of "cool licks" and that Metallica song.
It's kind of hard really, because when I'm approached for lessons, I really get into the theoretical aspect of things and then let the person apply it in any manner he/she sees fit. The problem is that most beginners cannot think or conceptualize music very abstractly, so they seek out familiar territory (like learning a particular blues lick or a pop tune).

I think the challenge for any teacher is to take advantage of the tension between the two ways of teaching; via pop songs, and straight up chord charts and licks, and the other being getting into theory and immediately applying it in a way that makes sense for the student.

public property
01-21-2009, 09:37 PM
I was thinking of the way I was taught and it was pretty much divided into 2 sections per lesson, the poppy songs licks etc and music theory. In that way you can explain improvisation to a student from their perspective because you can relate it to what they are currently learning.

Freepower
01-22-2009, 04:26 PM

I don't think the hairdband usage really lowers the "wow factor". After all, if you can make the playing easier some way, then why not? It's not really the difficulty of the licks that impresses me, it's how cool they sound.

Freepower
01-25-2009, 01:27 PM

I think the guy will be great if he incorporates some of that into good songs.

I also think that if you can make the playing easier, then you should. By the other logic, lowering action should take away from fast licks. All I care about is the final product really.

By that same logic, nobody should care that dragonforse masks their playing in the studio.

Please, tell me how do they "mask" their playing in the studio? And how is it related to this? If we follow your logic, which suggests anything that makes playing easier is cheating, we shoud take away the cutaways of the guitar because they make the fret access easier on the higher frets. Also we should amputate at least 3 fingers off each guitar player because playing is easier with multiple fingers etc etc.

I don't really see why it's so horrible come up with something that makes your playing easier. When you make something easier, you can, on the other hand, make some things more complicated and thus achieve very interesting sounding results. Eliminating string noise with a hairband in this case, gives you more freedom to focus on the musical content when you don't have to worry about ringing strings.

i believe he accents every 4th note instead of every 3rd like i'm used to doing and uses outside notes when doing speedy runs...is that all there is to it? can anyone confirm this and maybe give me some more pointers?

Listen to his playing. A lot. You'll catch a lot of things without even noticing it. Also, try transcribing a couple of his solos.

well, i do..i have Erotic Cakes, i've seen just about every video performance or lesson with regarding that album, i've seen his little blues jam track things, and i've even learned a bit of the song Fives. so far i've deducted that he sometimes uses outside notes and accentuates every 4th notes instead of every 3rd note...which to me is a completely different style of playing coming from learning Gilbert style stuff for the past 2 years.

are their any particular scales he uses besides the usual major/minor that i'm not aware of?

A shredder who perhaps has the biggest difference in size of fanbase across the ocean is Chris Impelliteri. In Korea at least, he always gets a mention when Yngwie and neoclassical shred in general is brought up. You barely hear about him in North America though.

His high speed instrumentals are very cool in small doses. 17th Century Chicken Pickin', Spanish Fire and Race Into the Light are all worthy of mention.
Rat Race and Beware of the Devil aren't half bad Yngwie tributes either.

Your thoughts?

Some food for thought.

I never found those 80s hair metal shredders that interesting. MAB (in Nitro context), George Lynch, Reb Beach, Doug Aldrich etc...they may be great players and some have cool styles but because they're trapped in the hair metal realm, their shredding just flops for me. There are a few exceptions though, like Gilbert in Mr Big (not exactly hair metal but approaching that territory). I love his work in Addicted and Daddy, which have been getting the most listens out of all the PG-related songs in my library lately haha.

Similarly, the same can be said about modern power metal lead players, if you don't like power metal that is. But players like Gus G should try the instrumental thing more often instead of making average power metal, and he's definitely capable of it. Feast of Savages, the instrumental Firewind song with Marty Friedman guesting in it, kicks ASS.

Those that have gone solo are doing damn well. Timmons, Gilbert and Kotzen (again, if quitting Mr Big counts) come to mind immediately. More should follow in their footsteps.

I've been meaning to look into Lynch's work outside of Dokken but I was not one bit impressed with Mr Scary which is supposed to be Lynch's Scarified, so I didn't bother.

I think Loomis is one of those. Just my thought. I don't care for his band work but that solo album of his was pretty good.

ZylitoL
04-08-2009, 09:31 PM
Hahaha damn, this is interesting!!

Loomis is one of the few whose solo efforts I actually don't like too much. There are moments in there but it gets very monotonous after a while and I can't listen to more than a song at once. It was like TGE without vocals, and everything a few notch down in quality aside from leadwork. In Nevermore, there's Dane's vocals and Van Williams' kick ass drumming to keep it interesting.

The same goes for Petrucci and Suspended Animation. I remember I first heard Glasgow Kiss, and was excited as hell to get Suspended Animation. Then, the first track, Jaws of Life hit me like a DT B-side riff.

I think it's because those guys have long instrumental passages with their main band, which they fit into so well that anything extended instrumental work they do with session musicians and without the input of their band members is bound to fall short. But having said that, they still kick enough ass to crank out a few decent songs per album/effort.

So I just played my first major gig in front of around 200 people.

I was given about 2 minutes to just shred, and I had this whole repertoire planned out starting with the Eudaimonia Overture intro. After that though, it just fell apart. My mind went COMPLETELY blank and my palms got sweaty as ****, and playing some Yngwie-ish 1 string licks was a disaster cuz my hand kept sticking to the neck. I ad-libbed the rest and played a very different set of licks. It was full of sloppiness, bad hand coordination and I even forgot to finish a few licks.

I still got a huge applause from the crowd who have probably never seen this kind of thing, but I feel absolutely no personal satisfaction.

And of course, this makes me realize how amazing all my favorite players are, and that I'm still a bedroom guitarist at best.

Don't worry about it. It takes quite a lot of time to get used to the live situation. It's surprisingly hard to play live the licks that you're perfectly able to play in your bedroom. Besides live performances aren't about perfect technique in the first place. All that it matters is that you're making the crowd have good time and conveying your emotions.

man i remember my first concert with my school's Jazz guitar class. i was a freshman going into a class that freshmans generally weren't allowed in, but my guitar teacher pulled strings to get me in because he knew that taking an intermediate course before going to jazz would have been a waste of time. so i got a "solo" part in the one rock song we were doing (White Room by Cream) and god did i feel it right before my solo came up... my hands were sweating, i was sweating, i had no clue what to play...once the solo started i pretty much started going with whatever licks i could come up with in the key of E and thank the lord i had that gain cranked cause my arms were feeling mighty weak at the moment, i even hit some accidental artificial harmonics but luckily they were in the right places and sounded good. all in all, everyone was telling me that i was great, even my guitar teacher said he was impressed, but to me all i can remember is a sense of fear and weakness :p:

it's been 4 years and numerous concerts (both good and horrible) later and i don't get as nervous anymore, but that feeling of "how do i recover if i mess up?" will forever be there.

I'm trying to get into sweeping, so I don't know if this would be the right forum (Guitar Techniques is better?), but since there is a shred chat, I thought that I it would be easier to just post it here instead of making a whole new thread.

Is this the "recommended" way of fingering this? Because I've got a problem, the first one is that the A keeps ringing after I start the scale. This might just be because it's a kinda big stretch when you proceed to roll you hand down the next part, or should I use my index in barre to dampen it?

Also, the D10, G9, ans B10 tend to run together, I use my ring finger on both of the 10-fretted notes.

4 2 1 2 1 4 2 1 2 4
e|----------------8h12-------------------|
B|------------10--------10---------------|
G|---------9-----------------9-----------|
D|-----10----------------------10--------|
A|-12------------------------------12----|
E|---------------------------------------|

I'd finger it like that. Less work between weaker fingers.

I'd guess its a 12th fret harmonic ringing on - you need to use your right hand to mute as you ascend and be very precise about finger movements. :)

Just a note, Either fingering between what you posted or FP posted will work. Personally, I use your fingering for that shape.
As for the harmonics, also play with where in the space between frets your left hand actually frets the note and how you lift your finger, to try to avoid sounding/minimize the harmonics with your left hand in the first place.

Couldn't find a pick when I was sitting down last night. Didn't want to get up and start hunting, so what did I use instead?

I keep a pick through my strings. Like up at the fifth fret . I hope you know what I am talking about. I find it to be the best method.

Do you pick with the whole length? you'd get like 30 pick strokes :p:

I've finally figured out how to beat Francesco Fareri's top score -

Sweep THIS, bitch!

Naw, just the curved end - it works remarkably well in desperation. Nice broad chords.

That was a very subtle bump.

Anyway guys, it was my birthday yesterday and I got a Schecter C-1 Classic. It's freaking amazing.
