I just witnessed Guthrie Govan jamming with a Gypsie Jazz guitar player [his name is Joscho something].
Possibly one of the most impressive jam's EVER ! Notes all over the place!
If I get the video of it i'll be sure to post it on here.

I have a question for anyone who can answer.
What album by Brett Garsed(with Brett Garsed, not really by) should I get? I already have Big Sky from downloading and since I have some money I am going to buy a real copy of it and another album of his. BUT I don't know any of his music outside of the music on Big Sky. I know it is his only solo album but how are the albums he did with other artists?

^ He only has the one solo album, which is Big Sky. Besides that, definitely get the albums he's done with Derek Sherinian and Planet X, namely Quantum and Planet X (the latter being a Sherinian solo album). He is sick on those. Blows away that Liquid Tension Experiment stuff by miles IMO.
And if you're desperate for more Garsed, you might like Quid Pro Quo and Exempt - those ones he did with T.J. Helmerich. I found them to be boring and downright crap, but others seem to find them cool. Let us know what you think! I absolutely love Garsed's work otherwise.

I thought you would be the one to reply. I remember you posting something some time back about Garsed's album Big Sky on this forum. That is when I looked him up actually. So thanks for some suggestions and thanks for getting me into him in the first place. :D

That'd be Joscho Stephan, who is awesome, yet disliked by most gypsy jazz purists for "not getting it", or being too much of a virtuoso (amongst gypsy jazz players - lol).
Sounds familiar though, doesn't it :p:

Yeah, I have the Alchemist, and a few songs from The Alchemist 2. Itunes has some neat shred compilation CD's like that.
For example
"Guitars that ate my brain" features:
Paul Waggoner
Devin Townsend
Chris Poland
Ron Thal aka Bumblefoot
Dave Martone
Shane Gibson
Ola Frenning and Christofer Malmström
Kris Norris
James Murphey
Eyal Levi and Emil Werstler
Hugues Lefebbre and Yann Mouhad
Mike Orlando
In other news, Itunes now carries music by Mattias Eklundh's band, Freak kitchen.
Also, I don't know how long they've had it, but they've got a couple CD's by Kiko Loureiro that look interesting.

I honestly listening to everything from jazz, to fusion, to some br00tal death metal, to hardcore, to baroque and classical, to hip-hop and rap, R&B, trance and other electronic based music, pop music, etc. Besides maybe country music(Read as country, I dig stuff like bluegrass, I also like the occasional country song), I listen to pretty much every kind of music out there.
It wasn't really about until the last year or two, before I think I really matured musically and didn't think I could only listen to one type of music. I mean I had been listening to jazz and classical, etc for a while with all this geetar stuff, but until then stuff like trance, hip-hop, pop music, etc(I use to be big in rap though like 8-10 years ago) I hadn't really listened to all too much.
I just think there's too much music, and so many different types of music to listen to out there just to listen to only one type of music. Though guitar driven music is my bread butter.

Fender isnt really for shredders, only malmsteen and to some extent eric johnson use fenders to shred. Ibanez/Jackson have necks that are more shred-friendly.
Of course, there isnt anything wrong buying a fender and using it for shred. Try different brands/guitars and choose your favourite.

What a strange one this is...

It's some unknown song a friend sent me once, and to this day I haven't been able to find an artist nor a track name for it (other than that it was in some paintballing game for PC?) It's an instrumental, with a weird-ass melody played on top of heavy riffs by all manner of distorted guitars. Kinda sounds like early Planet X, if I have to describe a similarity. Tone is horrendous, but I actually like the song. :D
Try it out. You may just dig it.

I've only ever heard Lane sweep once, and it sounded like shit. Then again, it was only a single second's worth on one of his instructional videos, and he wasn't even trying - he just swept some shape idly with loads of string noise and kinda shrugged it off.
So no, I think it's safe to say he wasn't a sweeper even if he happened to be good at the technique. Alt picking, though...

You gotta be kidding me. :haha:
Holdsy doesn't do "accessible", man. If anything, most of his songs sound the same if you haven't listened to them loads of times. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Download some albums (Hard Hat Area is a must), pick out anything that sticks to mind and see if he plays 'em. If you have any love for fusion, you won't be disappointed.

Once you're done with HHA, you might want to give Wardenclyffe Tower a shot. Be warned - it has one track with horrible female vox, but the rest is very good. The title track is one of his signature live cuts.
All his '80s albums have silly vox, but if you're patient enough to wade through them, there are some real gems to be found.

I have a question for those who have learned Becker's version of Paganini's 5th or at least part of it.
For the very first arpeggio sequence how do you pick it? I'm using a guitar pro version that is up on this site and it contains a way to pick it but I'm not really sure that is the best way to do it. It is a very awkward way of picking it but it does seem rather efficient. If you need me to show/tell you how it is shown then say so and I will provide an example.
I thought about doing it with a different hybrid picking pattern. Use my pick for the D string. Middle for G, ring for B, pinkie for E. Basically like I would if I was finger picking it. The only problem with it is that with the speed of it I don't know if I could get the D string at the right speed when it hits two notes in a row. Now I was only doing it with down strokes so that is part of the reason.
I have one other question but I am going to wait and work on it myself. I think working some of it out by myself is a good thing.
Oh and also, if needed I'll post a short text with the arps in it. I don't know if the other tabs that you may have learned from are different or not.

So I **** my pants last night...

"Yep, AOBF is being re-released with some bonus tracks (a few tracks from the Wild Woody soundtrack) It'll be a simple digipack design instead of a jewel case & booklet.
Shrapnel Records is the sole owner of all rights to the album - they're releasing it in the US, they may license to non-US countries... I have no involvement with that end of the business, nor any of the profits of this release. So instead, Shrapnel is kindly giving me a batch of albums to sell at *Bald Freak only*. I can't sell them as regular CDs because it will interfere with Shrapnel's distro deals, so I can only do special sales - they have to be above the usual Bald Freak CD selling price, as not to interfere with Shrapnel's deals with distro. So to get something more for the higher price, I'll be doing either personalized signed copies, or a special package thang... after the album was first released in '95, I spent 6 months transcribing the entire album - notation, tab, fingers used, picking, for every track on the multi-tracks for every song, except drums (I'm no good at drum notation...), it's 200 pages. I need to find an affordable way to print copies of this giant TAB book - if I can find a way, then I'll sell the CD and TAB book together. It might be very pricey though, depends on the cost of printing the books up. Will keep you posted of developments, and if anyone has any info to share on low-run manufacturing of self-published book, please let me know - thanks!!

dude, a tab for bumblefoots would be epic... although sorta pointless because very few people would be able to play the majority of it.

That is a disgrace and sound absolutely terrible. I hate when people try to play classical pieces on electric guitar. The only exception being Malmsteen's rendition of Adagio by Albinoni.

Well, guitar and violin pieces translate pretty well imho - but the metalling up of pieces is often horrible, not so much the fact that the instrument is electric guitar.

I'm yet to find a classical piece played on electric guitar that sounds good, any examples you can show me? Don't link me to Jason Becker playing Caprice no.5 though, IMO that's one of the worst offenders.

The more I think the more I feel I agree with you, actually. I know I've heard some good renditions but I can't remember what - and besides, the tide of heavy metal dross with the odd famous melody on top...
And speaking of the worst offenders, I think this particular person probably occupies the whole of the top (bottom?) ten - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-FspyiKS6M
I guess I'm biased because I tend to end up practicing a lot of the classical I study on my electric guitar (just what's within arms reach or with me when I travel) and I quite like the sound of it - Bach through a clean jazzy tone is pretty nice, imo. I'll stick some on Youtube when they're performance ready. :)

I can't really find any modern covers/arrangements of classical music that aren't completely rock/metalish.
Depends on my mood if I like it like that or not though. Sometimes I like the upbeatness of it, sometimes it just sounds like someone soloing over a generic backing track.
That's one of the main problems I think, with your standard rock band; a lack of all the proper harmonic shindigs between the instruments that make the classical tunes what they are. Tons of distortion doesn't usually help that :haha:

Has to be said, the whole classical thing mixed with shred has never interested me one bit. I couldn't care less if someone's playing the most gorgeous piece of classical music on a guitar - I'd simply rather hear a trained orchestra do it properly. I appreciate classical wholeheartedly... just not when guitar is involved.
If a shredder is going out of their way to perform some classical stuff, I'm just in it for the speed - it's all I focus on. I don't give a shit as to whether they're doing it as a homage (lame) or just being pretentious (lame, but forgivable). As long as the tone is good, just shred your guts out and I'm with ya.

^ That's the kind of thing which gives shred a bad name, IMO. And they say Batio's a robotic shredding machine - come on! At least he knows when and how to slow it down when needed, and can play damn tastefully when doing so. Fareri, however, is something else...
