I bet you can't play What's may age again by blink182, Tom finds that difficult to play so it must be hard."
Why are these people allowed to pollute our guitar shops? And even more, the are in sound control where the keep the Ibanez guitars.
That happens to me as well quite often, but you just gotta live with it...
the weirdest thing is, i can play quite a lot of 'difficult' songs, but for some reason I find the Whats My Age Again riff pretty hard to play, although ive never spent a great deal of time on it, and i dont mind admitting it, im not like some of the other people on this board who maintain they can play every song ever.
I prefer kids playing nirvana etc in a music shop to some kid who fluffs his way through the sweet child o mine intro or god forbid, atte mpts eruption and fails miserably. just as bad are the kids who'll play some jazz chord, let it ring for five seconds, then play another one- minor sevenths are always a favourite-, then look meaningfully into space before playing some lame-ass descent on the bass strings and then ending on another annoying, discordant and extravagantly named chord- its like they want you to beleieve they just made it up, freeform when really its just some chords off an early chilli peppers song played clean and slow.

abit off topic here, but has anyone else realised how oddly marty friedman has his picking hand!!! surely its not gentle on his wrist!!!
He has a mad picking style, he admits it weird, apparently when hes sweep picking he does some mad thing like playing individual downstokes when everyone else would be sweeping back toqwards the ceiling with upstrokes- Or something like that, im sure one of the more, educated, shredders on here can clarify it.
beaker
06-13-2005, 04:23 PM
i take it you mean he does individual downstrokes when hes sweeping back up? if so then that is mad, lol
something like that yeah, i read an interview with his somewhere and he was going on about his unorthodox picking etc- Its hardly done him any harm though has it?

can someone reccomend some goood shred scales?
HammerForce
06-13-2005, 08:04 PM
I use the harmonic minor most often...Checkout Yngwie's stuff to hear what that can sound like. Melodic minor is also quite cool but i think, no matter what scales you use it just matters that you can come up with some stuff which sounds good, nobody cares if its in a pentatonic minor or anything...Just use everything you know.
Anyway..My question: What is the definition of actual shredding? Is it playing over a certain speed or something? It's just i thought it was a term but I've heard lots of people say 'I can't shred' or 'Alexi Laiho can't shred' so i was just wondering if there was a specific definition of what it means?
GnobleEnemy
06-13-2005, 09:27 PM

Last night, Michael Angelo had a clinic at a local guitar shop. There weren't man people there, but he was fucking amazing. I've never seen anyone play like that. I did almost get to see Satch have a clinic there too, but I had to work.
I'm just glad I got to go last night. I got his autograph and was going to get a CD but I didn't have any cash and my mom wasn't able to loan me any then.
A funny thing that did happen though; He was playing his first song and suddenly the power just goes. He said that he was just getting into it and there was still a couple minutes left. When the power went out though, some biker redneck goes, "You played the electricity out!" It was hilarious. I would have preferred to hear the rest of the song, though.
It was an awesome night and I hope to see him again.

One of his songs did begin with some bluesy riffs, though.
I was surprised when he first came in, though. I've never heard him talk or anything and his name is very Italian. I didn't know he was American and I was actually expecting a very Italian accent:p:. He actually has a kind of dorky voice. He sure makes up for it in his playing, though.

He shredded his ass off but, he's also a pretty funny guy. He can keep the crowd entertained even when he's not playing with comedy anecdotes and of course his famous stupid voices. (As featured on his DVDs).
He's also one of the safest down to earth guitarists you will meet and values his fans. Anyone that wants a signature or photograph taken with him can have one. Go to see him if you ever get the chance.

But yesterday in one of my summer college courses, we were talking about how the installed a "remote" in a guys brain similar to the condition Jason is in, and he can now control things by thinking about it. They've also been able to plant these in deaf peoples brains and enable them to hear again. I don't know if they're computer chip like things or what....that kind of stuff is all to vast for me, but I'm sure you could find some stuff on the net about it. As far as i know, he can write and has written music, which EVH was meant to play...
Anyway, make a becker thread, or better yet, post in one of the ones already here, if you want to know more.
Next question, to put it neatly for the random shred chat thread, whats the most technically complex (on guitar) music that is reasonably slow? Shred seems to push the borders on speed, but lets see who has the most painful chord shapes...

i asked satriani if he had any news about becker ( when satch came down here - read my post on page 34 i think ) and he said that he didnt.
i read something about a brazilian team of doctors who were doing something..... i dont remember what exactly but something that has a 1% chance of him coming back to normal. Someone has even forwarded the info to Becker's site.
well if i somehow make it to a medical college , i will keep becker in mind.

He wouldn't be able to play like that anyway, but if you consider that as being able to "stretch" then yes I could do 12-24 but I sure as hell couldn't play like that. But actually "playing" I can do 12-21.

How long of fingers do all you mofo's have compared to how far you can stretch? Can you guys give me your middle finger length, and how far you can stretch from... we'll say the 5th fret on the top string?
edit: just checked and my hands are quite small. My middle finger on my left hand measures about 78 mm and I can stretch from the 5th to the 13th fret on the top string.
Freepower

I can actually play something from the 5th to the 10th fret. I can stretch to the 11th, and if I turn my index finger on its side I can barely reach the 12th fret, but I wouldn't be able to play anything.
My index finger is about 91mm long.

Woah, are your fingers dislocated or saggy or something, cause my middle finger's about 85mm (when measuring on the palm, not the back of my hand) and I can't even stretch from the 5th to 12th fret in a playing situation.

It's a 22 fret squier strat if that helps. Standard neck length for strats. I don't know. I can comfortable reach from 5 to 12 and play that, but I can barely reach 13, just don't ask me to play with that much of a reach.... I don't know why this is surprising?

Haha, Dreadnought, you do have small hands...BUT you can still reach as far as I can so I guess it doesn't matter. Is 91mm longer than most middle fingers? Just wondering, some people say I have big hands.

Meh. I think I just have very flexable fingers. I can't dislocate them or anything like that, but I can make pretty large angles between my fingers. When stretching from 5 to 13, I am making roughly a 110-120 degree angle with my index and pinky fingers.

Okay this is out of no where but I got to post it anyway. I was at a show at a festival last night of an older cover band, and I sat in on a few tunes with them. Anyway, the lead guitarist for them is pretty good when it comes to covering music, but during the fourth set he plays Cliffs of Dover (by EJ of course). Well the drunken wife of the bass player who was sitting next to me turns to me and says "I've seen Eric Johnson in concert.....and Bob (the guitar player) plays this ten times better then him." It was almost enough to keep me from ever drinking again....

My band and I watched Joe's show from backstage on a TV. It was so perfect. His concentration is solid and his playing seems flawless. His command on the instrument is stunning. He squeezes that neck to get every sound and note possible. Reeves Gabrels put it perfectly once when after a 2 and a half hour Satriani performance, he said it reminded him of a prize fighter in the 15th round and he's made every punch his body could muster and still keeps slugging it out (I'm paraphrasing). We were all just looking at each other while Joe was playing, and laughing at how amazing it was. After the show I asked him how it went and he had the nerve to say "Ah, I played kind of sloppy tonight." I told him to shut the **** up before I get sick.

They both thought that they had somekind of disease and went to see a doctor. Later on, they got to know it was nothing serious.

When your girlfriend is hotter still, and you're hopelessly devoted/pussywhipped so that you dont find the friends too tempting, but still nice to look at, then its great.
Besides, hot girls have very few male friends that stay just friends. Im very dependable and a nice guy. Im just helping our gender not look shallow arses.

There are lots of funny incidents.
And about the virginity thing, when he went to the clinic, there was this really hot doctor, who he was hoping would take his pants off or something. I dont remember exactly, but I think she gave him some sorta injection or something, and his "little friend" still hasnt forgiven him.

I actually literally checked up the thread to see if someone else's music was being discussed.
Well, um, i think the most important thing is to make music you enjoy. MAKE it. Making music teaches you so much about it.
Having a guitar and only playing covers is like having a dick and using it only for wanking.
Sure, its fun, but there are better things to do! Its good to start with, but you need to PROGRESS! (continues in same vein for a while...)
Most important things - learning theory, be open to any kind of music - you can ALWAYS, ALWAYS take something useful away with you, and find your own style by noodling around and learning stuff you really love.
And that said, dont neglect technique, whatcha want to do is practice slowly. Wish I had from the start... :(
EDIT: That said - new song up today fellas, 80s guitar ballady thing. My personal favourite out of my own lead guitar, its nice to see some improvement, y'know?

what? there's considering Muhammed did everything on both albums, I don't really see where the second guitarist comes in so far. Where can I hear him?

Sorry, missed this post somehow. I doubt you saw that in a short film, the picture was taken on a still analogue camera by my mother when i was fourteen. There is a chain of safety pins through my lip to my ear and my hair is spiky.
Now its past shoulder length, but im thinking of going back to the spikes.
Girls thought i was seriously hot stuff back then - i got the nickname "sexy daniel" from 3 different girls, independantly.
Now im known as "floppy daniel" by my girlfriend. How times change.
For my floppy HAIR, damn you!

Hmm, same thing kinda happened to me...
6th grade= cool
9th grade= Hybrid jock/nerd/musician.
Don't get me wrong, but more girls liked me in 6th grade than 9th, but I DO have a lot more friends now. Meh. Now I'm like a hermit with the guitar... :( ( and I still suck)

Go on a trip, return 1 month later, there are like *5 who is the fastest shredder threads* and 25+ people postin all over the place. Anyone besides me notice this? (Not saying its bad, just give them a few months and they wont think kirk is faster than yngwie ):D

Didn't get any acknowledgement except for from Axegrinder, and he posts the same thing again and people get interested! Bollocks, I say.
But yea, Muhammed Suicmez (of Necrophagist) is a beast. PERFECT chops, does everything flawlessly. Not to mention, the girls probably trip over themselves trying to get in bed with him.
But, everyone in that band is insane. The drummer is so good and precise that someone was 100% SURE that they had used a high quality drum machine instead of a human drummer. The bassist is just as crazy as Muhammed, and the other guitarist keeps up pretty well.

Well, I guess not being able to shred doesn't = n00b. But I've listened to Freepower's stuff, yeah, and it kicks my feeble attempts at playing guitar's balls. Actually, I think most people in this forum could outplay, but I like it here anyways.

Ok, I gotta make my 3000 post in a good thread, so..
Yeah, I enjoy this forum the most over all the other genre's, Modern Rock used to be where I always hanged out because Grunge was like the only thing talked about in there, but its barely talked about now(All the Grunge people(including me) have gone to another website  )

Hey, believe me - you'll have no bother outplaying me soon if you practice.
And i like this forum partly because most people here CAN outplay me! Its how i pick up lots of cool advanced info and techniques.
I know id never have started sweep picking without this forum, and i suppose i've picked up more than that.
Hence why i dedicated "shredola espagnola" to this forum. You guys pwn.

Haha, took you a while to put that kidding in there. lol. I think that that was more random than off topic. I've been playing for a year and I can't even do a six string harmonic minor sweep behind my head... I really should be practicing...

^Practice=Good.
Anyways, yesterday(Friday), I saw Deep Purple(with Steve Morse on the geetar) and it blew me away. Around the middle of the set, they did this all instrumental peice, it was written by Steve, but I think its an actuall Deep Purple song. It was fucking amazing!, I didnt catch the name of it, but could someone maybe help here? And can you reccomend me some essential Steve Morse stuff?(IE good Solo records, and good Dixie Dregs(sp?) records?)
Thank you my shred brothers.

it may have been the instrumental song called "Contact Lost" from their last studio album 'Bananas'
anyway, I recommend you get 'The Introduction', 'Stressfest', 'Structural Damage' and 'Major Impacts' among Steve's solo albums... actually all of 'em kick major arse
