I'll take a decent tune or riff opr speed anyday, I prefer players that tend to use a bit of emotion, giving their music character rather than seeing how many notes they can play.
You 'shredders' make me laugh becuase when a guitarist doesnt fill absolutley every bar with solid 32nd note runs, you call him/her sloppy.
You immature twats have got a lot to learn beofre you take the big steps from your bedroom to the outside world.
Bitch please?
You come in to the shred forum, and to the shred chat thread just to insult the people posting, act like a fanboy and an ass, and make opinionated statements like they were the truth.
We're immature?
Majority of the people on this forum are quite nice people, and there was no need for the insulting.
This repeated way too much around here, but a lot of shredders actually do have a lot of emotion in their songs(Vai, Satch for the most obvious example),and as Resiliance has pretty much said, the emotion is in the listener.
And it seems like you have no idea what sloppy means.
SLash isnt the best thing ever but dont tell me theres not an awful lot of people on here who dont instantly dimiss posts on 'lesser' shredders such as Slash with responses like ' Cooley owns Slash any day' or ' Shawn Lane could play Paradise City while he was still in his mothers womb' or ' Joe Stump can smoke any guitarist ever.'
Slash is not a shredder. He is an overrated guitarist.
Seriously, he is.
He has written a lot of great tunes, has that tone, and is overall good at what he does but so are a lot of other guitarists. I dont understand what makes everyone worship him so much. Maybe its the image, I really dont know.
If there's those people who base their opinions on technique and speed only, they're best to ignore. And there aren't many of them here really.

Can somebody say, got turned down? Don't come bitchin to us if your upset.
Ouch, ouch, ouch.
If Slash wanted to, he is more than capable of SHREDDING, the actual technique of shredding MEANS nothing, learning how to play scales really fast means **** all if it isnt in context of a song.
You guys contradict yourself.
You quote your hero's mantra like philosophy like ' Anyone who is individual is a shredder, anyone who challenges the conventions and boundaries with uniques style is a shredder.'
In my book, that makes Slash a shredder, when everyone else at the time was tapping themselves into an early state of tendonitis, he took music back to the blues based playing, he combined elements of blues, punk rock and hair metal to make a unique sound- ASnd his technique is decent too- THATS why people think so much of him.
According to this, then the guitarist from New Order can be deemed a shredder, because his minimalist style is completely unique.
But then i think many of you guys disagree, so whats it to be?
I will give it you, Holdsworth has amazing technique, and the way he uses Coltrane and Davis style jazz voicings to his playing really is something else, a very recognisable player. To me, though Im nopt keen on the overall compositions.
This has notyhing to do with how much jAZz/ fusion i listen to, becuase belive me ive heard a lot, I like some, i dont like some.
I can admire the pioneers of thuis type of music, Vai, Satch, Malmsteen even John Petrucci, but all these no mark imitators on these word-of-mouth, pointless, widdly PROG albums or the Malmsteen imitating wannabes that are about as unique as New Found Glory's guitarist make me sick.
I dont care if Cooley or Romeo have spent three hours a day more on their sweep patterns and thus OWN Malmsteen or whatever, becuase theyre not original.
I agree that the emotion is in the listener, if someone LIKES a piece of music and it moves them then NO-ONE else can k nock it, even if they dont understand why, its all down to to taste.
But then again, I dont really listen to shred music to be moved, becuase hearing Malmsteen flying around, sounding like a trapped bumblebee doesnt really move me.
I prefer listening to singer songwriters to be MOVED, becuase in general, they are singing about things i can relate to. Having never FLOWN IN A BLUE DREAM, been FAR BEYOND THE SUN or been SURFING WITH AN ALIEN, i find it hard to relate to the music or empathise with the artist.

slash isn't original, he just made catchy songs, and all those things he combined, its called rock fool, and he didn't start that, and to your previous post and your comment 'that sounds too smart for slash' well duh, of course he didn't realise what he was playing, cause hes not a theory buff, but its a three note pattern, not chromatics like you thought and since 9 is 3 3's its easy to make it fit.
Just shutup and get out of the shred forum, everyones just getting irritated by your immature remarks, we DON'T think guitarists all gods because of their technique, we discuss technique here, because its the shred forum, just because you admit to not being able to play chromatics at quarter notes at 180 dosen't mean nobody else can.
I'm sorry that you don't get moved by shred, but the top three songs on m list right now are tender surrender, altitudes, perpetual burn, the boy from seattle and kill the guy with the ball/the god eaters, you know why? because if you understand what the artist was trying to create then its damn easy to get sucked into the tune
Uh,
e-----------------------------------------
b------------------------------------------
g---------------------------15h1617-----
d--------------15h16h17----------------
a-15h16h17-----------------------------
e--------------------------------------------
They look like chromatics to me.
Slash didnt create rock, and Steve Vai didnt create shred.
Youre not obsessed with speed? Check your signature mate.
I never said it sounds TOO smart for Slash, i said it sounds PREtty smart.
If you wont even read my posts then just f!ck off, your argument is flawed, you obviously dont like a discussion.
I listen to loads of shred, and it doesnt move me, sorry, i cant change that. I bet you Satch and Vai would give their left testicle to write a riff half as memorable as Slash's, Ok, he never really strays far from the pentatonic, but imagine a GnR song with a Lydian solo or a modal sequence traversing a load of keys, it would sound horrible.
I listen to Shred for inspiration, not to be emotionally moved.
I must admit, ive never tried to sit down with a metronome and play straight quarter notes at 180bpm, but then again, I can play a far amount of Satch, Vai and Malmsteen stuff, and I can play the Paradise Cuity outro so I guess i could do such a pointless and mind numbing exercise if the fancy too0k me.

Nope those aren't chromatics, No i'm not obssesed with speed, I just like vai. And all of slashes riffs are boring and everyone guns and roses song sounds the same, in my opinion.
Got any more arguments? no, then shutup.
Whats a chromatic then?

I dunno what neckpickup to buy for my Ibz SZ, I also have an RG 7 string and I play more heavier things on that one, I use the SZ for little bit softer things like timmons, reinhardt, di meola, mclauglin etc. good neckpickups for this kinda stuff ??

You are not getting it at all. We dont like shred because of the speed, we like it because WE LIKE THE SONGS. For The Love Of God means as much as Stairway To Heaven or whatever song means to you and its not because OMG IT HAS 903485 NPS SOLO, its because we like the ****ing song.
Sure slash COULD learn to play fast, but I doubt he could be anywhere near as melodic or creative as Vai.
I bet you Satch and Vai would give their left testicle to write a riff half as memorable as Slash's, Ok, he never really strays far from the pentatonic, but imagine a GnR song with a Lydian solo or a modal sequence traversing a load of keys, it would sound horrible.
Stupidest statement EVER.
Im sure a lydian solo would fit just fine on some of GNR's songs, it would just take a guitarist that has the capability to learn more than one scale.
You take your musical takes and make them out to be like they are TRUTH and not OPINION. Because you dont like Vai and whoever that much makes it IMPOSIBLE to think that somebody might like a Vai tune more than a GNR tune. Read what you type next time.
I understand that people like Vai more than Gnr, normally anal, speed obsessed guitarists. If you are not one of these then i salute you.

I dont wanna bash slash, I respect him as a guitarist. But he doesnt know any theory, while Im pretty sure he would be way better if he knew something. And it's silly to too say that lydian wouldnt fit in a gnr song, slash would do his own thing with the lydian just like vai did his own thing with it. I dont care at all if you dont like shredders or something, thats just a matter of taste. But you can respect them, now you're just acting like an ass.

Vai, FTLOG...well, i dont listen to much/any vai. But at least he still has both his testicals. Unlike satch.
And i think you'll find none of us are speed obsessed when it actually comes to music. After all, my favourite band are muse. You'll find that although speed is often MENTIONED in relation to shredders and their technique, a lot will still prefer Vai, Satch, Malmsteen - whoever speaks to them, regardless of speed.

You are not forced to learn a FTLOG or always with me always with you for your 6th grade exams.

one last thing, I am an unabashed Vai worshipper, but never mentioned anywhere that I could shred. If you want to argue, why dont you pick on something I actually said ????
Anyway, even if you could play better with one hand or with your wang, I wouldnt listen to it for anything in the world, just because of the way you talk. It seems like your having a bad day or something. Just chill man, arguing with 10 people and losing is never the solution.
and pray to God, its never too late.

If i go to a rome and diss romans?
what the hell does that mean? Theres a difference between having a heated argument and getting personal and making crap jokes abouyt having 12 yr old girlfirends isnt there? Trying to put a lame internet geek slur on my character because i dared challenge the mighty Vai? And you say im immature?
I'll let this lie and drop the argument, but I'll just say, If Slash knows less theory and still writes memorable songs, riffs, solos, melodies, then that to me makes him a better player becuase he's playing with his heart not his mind, he doesnt add notes becuase ancient old music theory decress that the lydian mode has an airy feel, or the harmonic minor has a neoclassical feel, he's PLAYING what SOUNDS GOOD, what he feels.
Right, now forget all the confusion over the terminology of what makes a shredder, Slash hasnt recorded any pretentious instrumental albums, he doesnt talk abstract boring theory in magazines, he doesnt play out and out shred, but hes done flashy moments, and i didnt realise this website was that elitist that such an attempt at a discussion would result in such bollox.

07-20-2005, 12:05 PM
^ he has some solo stuff.
Most shredders write music with their hearts : Jason Becker is a fine example. Even Steve Vai. If their stuff is pretentious to you, maybe thats the image created by your mind, and thats perfectly normal because we all have different perceptions.
And no, your argument was anything but elitist.
again, peace, lets go to a pub and play some good old led Zep, and maybe why not even gnr?
I have a lot of time for Jason Becker, whereas Vais stuff- however technically impressive- tends to verge on either silly stuff- Kittens Got Claws, Ya Yo Gakk, Bad Horsie, Salamanders in the Sun, The Riddle- or weird spiritual stuff- Whispering a Prayer, FTLOG, HIS WHOLE NEW ALBUM- and to me its all a bit TOO good. Vai's spiritual stuff just has no appeal to me, froma personal sense, therefore, the only thing i listen to it for is as an aspiring guitarist.
I think of it like photorealist painting- Ralph Goings is a good one- his painting is technially astonsihing, but its too good, whereas someone who had much less technical artisty- ie Edward Hopper- i find more appealing and interesting.
If i practised 15 hours a day, Id want to be as good as Vai, but i dont, i dont have the kind of commitement he or half the other popular shredders have, and thats what i admire about them, surely that qualifies me to come on this board. After all, its a guitar sitre, not an out and out Vai apreciation site, and when i come on with a genuine and legitimate question about a piece of pretty fast guitar music, it is met with endless cries of 'Slash is not shred!', well, get this neither are rthe Cars, but theres a thread on them on here! or ' those arent chromatics' even though technically they are. whast the hell was all that about?
Are you starting to realise what gets me so pissed off about some of the poeple on here?

see, there are better ways of putting across an idea. firstly, you dont attack the concept of shred.
yes, as i mentioned earlier ( in case you noticed ) that i like slash. i love Jeff Beck's music. I love love Dave Gilmour's guitaring. Not so long ago, I pronounced my infinite love for Nirvana. I even went ahead and called Kurt Cobain a genius. I said people like him come once in a million years. I love Indian and Western Classical Music. I like Jazz. I like some pop. I like Rush. I like Crimson King. I like Metallica. I love Megadeth. I like the Corrs. I like Audioslave. I like the Who, Led Zeppelin, Simon and Garfunkel. I like so many non-shred things.
But when I declare my great love for these things, I dont put down any other form of music. I dont anger other people by saying hey, shred doesnt have emotion and stuff like that.
you have a minor point, but there's a way of putting across an idea or discussion.

Do you guys not realise noone ****ing cares.
It's all about the music, who cares what you call what and who is what, shut the hell up and go practice towards whatever goal you have set for yourself.
Learn to have some fucking respect for other things, you're acting like a bunch of xenophobes.
wil: I don't even get what you're trying to say man, please formulate a clear point, because I really don't know what you're ranting about, and in succession everyone ranting against you.
We don't need this.
I suppose some of those Becker pieces have a fair old amount of emotion in them, hes a great player and its a damn shame what happened to him, to me, that makes listening to his music a bit more emotional, left wondering what the hell he could have gone on to be etc etc.
I respect the fact that the majority of shredders must have an awesome amount of dedication to their instrument and thus automatically require a certain emotional connection to their instrument, if thats clear. Yngwie's music is repetitve as hell and pretty annoying, but its his LIFE, he talks more about guitars than his family, there are more pictures of his guitars on his website than there is his wife!
However, just cos Slash was in a rock band, and he doesnt play perfectly picked 32nd note passages etc, he is often criticised for being sloppy, or not SHRED, but as weve established, the Cars arent shred, nor are Extreme, nor really were Mr Big- yes, they may have had capable guitarists but they arent shred- yet they are talked about on this board, so why isnt SLash- If i like the bloke, and have a certain query about a passage of his music, recieve some criticism for this, then defend my argument that shred doesnt move me all that much, then whats the problem?
The guy is more than capable of defending himself, he doesnt need me to do it for him, i just think hes a unique, pretty talented and great sounding player.
What is it? If a post doesnt contain the names Vai or Becker dont you guys take it seriously? Why not take my word for it when i say Ive HEARD loads of this stuff, and Vai, Becker, Satch and Malmsteen are the satndout shredders, the rest- Fareri, Eklhund, Romeo- etc etc are just a bunch of pale imitators.
As for that chromatic thing, THEY DONT HAVE TO BE FOUR-NOTE PER STRING CHROMATICS LIKE A MIND NUMBING SHRED EXERCISE YOU KNOW.

I'm in England man. ;) I'm just an Allan fanatic so I hunt down anything with his name on it. :p:
EDIT: Anyone interested in Allan's "compositions" should by the Gary Husband album "The Things I See" All the tracks are "covers" of Allan tracks played on acoustic piano, no drums, no bass, no distortion and NO SYNTH. :D
Ive looked everywhere, but cant find hardly any Holdsworth or McLaughlin, most of the stuff ive heard is on the internet etc.

Hello.
Maybe some Joe Satriani songs to start with, songs like Always with me Always with you, Summer Song, some off of his latest album - Is there love in Outer Space, Ceremony, Friends. I suggest you buy the anthology album.
You may get frustrated many a time. You may get stuck but just keep going. And since you know your theory, you may even be able to appreciate the song writing and learn some new things.
good luck

theres more things about Steve Vai. I read somewhere ( it may not be true, i dont know ) that he didnt have sex for 2 months before recording Erotic Nightmares, and that he fasted for 2 days or so before recording Tender Surrender.
I read somewhere he stopped masturbating for ages while practising- although you could argue he probably just swapped his dick for his guitar.
The guy is so committed to his instrument its unreal.
I cant stand ALexi Laiho but i think he put it pretty good when he said theres stuff on Passion and Warfare that no-one else will ever be able to do.

So much for a fucking Shred Mafia. The Blues Mafia got all fucking pissed as shit over is, saying I copied them, which I wasnt trying to do. They wouldnt let me in the Blues Mafia(for the dumbest of reasons), so I made my own.
Why not let me in the Blues Mafia? They wouldnt let me in because I have other tastes in music, not just blues. What the fuck is that shit about? This is a goddamn Guitar Forum, why so many fucking rules about a goddamn club?
Yeah sorry for the rant, just that whole reason of them not letting me in, well it made me fucking pissed off, so stupid.

I just saw the G3 dvd with Satch, Vai and Yngwie.
And I must say, it was ****ing amazing!
There are a few parts that almost made me piss myself it was so cool.
The whole jam at the end was amazing.
Yngwie raping his guitar. :p:
But the coolest thing in the whole concert was when Vai played the really fast part in I'm The Hell Outta Here with the other people in his band. How they trade off and stuff was too cool for words.
Just one question, was the Billy Sheehan playing bass for Vai?

Greetings shredder people, i too spend abnormal amounts of time worshiping the 6-stringed beast!
I have recently started to try and add tapp's to my sweeping bits/runs.. but I have a bit of a question thing..
When sweeping and tapping I have to pick(sweep) OVER THE FRETBOARD!!!, this means I cant mute the strings at the bridge which in turn leads to way too much noise!
My question is how do you guys deal with this? do you bring/brush the palm of your hand across the strings as you sweep them to stop ringing? im thinking this is the way to do it but i know its gonna take a lot of practice to achive (which i av no probs wiv!) i just need or would like to know if im on the right track!
This is the type of lick im talking about..
-------------------------------------------8h12t1512p8--------------|
----------------------------------------10-----------------10-----------|
-------------9h12t1412p9---------9-----------------------9----------|
----------10-----------------10---10-------------------------10-------|
----7h12-----------------------12-------------------------------12p7-|
---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
h= hammer on t=tap note p=pulloff
that kind of shape maybe further up the neck and maybe broken up a bit. (shape mite not b rite (i dnt have my guitar with me)).
Hope tha makes sense! Thanks for your time dudes.

yeah, sweeping over the neck uses exactly the same muting priciples, just moved from the bridge to where ever your right hand is.

Similar question to his:
Can anybody here do the Michael Romeo style string skip tapping cleanly and at speed?
I've tried doing it, but its a nightmare to keep it clean and avoid extra noise. In particular I tend to sound open strings when moving to other strings, like an accidental pull off.
Any tips on how to get it right, mechanics wise? Something other than starting at a slow pace, because I can already do that.
Arpeggios like this are something I'd really like to start using, but I'd prefer not to play them at all than to play them badly.
Freepower
08-10-2005, 07:07 PM
^ idk, other than practice, id suggest looking up some lessons on it. There are tricks to it, but i cant recall them from memory.
And as for the sweep and taps, just dont sweep over the fretboard, is what i usually do. Sweep right before the fretboard and perhaps just mute less tightly with your palm. At the end of the day, your problem with sweeping over the fretboard is that you may accidently tap a note with your pick....or deliberately. :)

Yeah i would have said the whole thing about not sweeping over the fret board if tony macalpine didn't do it so damn cleanly, clearly theres just som knack for it.

Sweepin over the Fretboard seems to be do-able at speed so damn tricky tho, total respect for those who do, seems worth learning it that way.. I cant imagine doing it any other way without having to dart about to put it tap's.. do any of you guys sweep over the board n mute with the side of you palm as you cross over strings?
ALSO.. It would be a great help if you guys could tell some names of good books on theory that may have helped you guys out, aimed at to-be shredders perhaps. Lots of good web articals but a really good book(s) on the subject is what im looking for. I mean knowing scale patterns any how to pull a lick is one thing but.. you know what I mean , gotta put it all together and know what it means. Like Inervals chords/scales relationships.. modes.. and such like...
Sorry for all the questions! But I gotta ask!
Thanks for your time again!

When I do the Romeo string skip tapping thing, such as the interlude in sea of lies, I tend to mute the string being skipped with the fleshy part of my index finger. Hell, just experiment muting the unwanted strings in different ways. Once you figure a good way out, work it up to speed.

Most vai songs have that thing were they relate to every other song hes done somehow, that little 'rememberance' sound that he gets, makes you feel more involved in the song.

I must confess, I would prefer if Vai didn't sing on his albums at all, but maybe thats just me. He doesn't have a bad voice, but his guitar can do the talking for him so much better. His playing seems to suffer on the vocal tracks.
The first half of Fire Garden is easily the best.
Similarly, RI:R starts off well with Building the Church, but then on Dying for your love, I just think 'Dammit Steve, just shut up and play yer guitar!'
Fire Garden is a good album overall though, if a bit wierd at times, i.e 'When I was a little boy'.

Lyrics by Steve Vai
Album : Flexible Leftovers
Warning: these lyrics are pretty coarse and are not intended to be read by children like public property or anyone easily offended by written words. You've been warned.
**** yourself with a rubber hose
Stick it in your mouth and down your throat
Up your nose and in your heinie hole
I don't care where it goes
And it don't matter if you're straight or gay
You should **** yourself anyway
Now, you don't have to listen to a word I say
But I know you, you'll be humpin' away
**** yourself with your neighbor's nose
If you can't use that, use a 10-foot pole
Stick it up your ass and go for a stroll
Everyone will know you've been to this show
If you can't take, eat my stool
Masturbate with some crazy glue
I don't care what you do
Fock yourself with a garden too
l**** yourself with politics
Ahh they're full of ****in' ****in' ****
I mean you know we've been lied to ever since we were born
It's amazing that we've been getting ****ed that long
**** yourself with the world wide web
Man you could ride that sucker right from your bed
You may even meet a Tom, Dick, Jane or Billy
Then grab onto your modem and **** yourself silly
**** yourself with your heart and soul
Give it everything you got, hey I'm talkin' to you
If you can't even **** yourself,
How ya gonna **** somebody else?
**** yourself with my microphone
I'll give it to you later when we're all alone
We can turn it up loud
And see if you come, but
Don't get your jizz on my microphone
**** yourself with organized religion
Now that is some seriously sinnin' business
If the Lord sees their pathetic crimes
He'll be ****in' them 'til the end of time
And can someone explain to me this racist crap
I know it isn't white, but it isn't black
And to all you people who only see things your way
Well, you can suck my dick and take all day
**** your nose with a pound of blow
Watch your money get up and gobut when you burnt your brain and you sayI don't know!
I hate to tell you but I told you so
**** yourself with this grunge rock noise
I mean, stuff those albums in your groin
They come down on me because I know how to play -Hey... **** you!
**** yourself with a copy of Rolling Stone
Or are they too holy for your holiest of holes
Now those people think they're holier than Moses
But aren't they just a bunch of ****in' posers
**** yourself with your mother's jewelryI won't tell,
I ain't a stooly
If you pounce hard enough you'll cough up a ruby
Your blood will be rich and so will your doodie
**** yourself with the latest fashion
With your spikes and your hair and those cute little buttons
And if you happen to have some leather and lace
**** yourself 'til you're blue in the face
**** yourself with your income tax
They're ****ing you and that's a fact
Before you know it your money's all spent
And you've just been ****ed by the government
**** yourself with your lawyer friend
You're the only one that's getting ****ed in the end
I have been so ****ed by legal bills that my asshole is the size of Beverly Hills
**** yourself with your full-length sweater
With your minks and your diamonds and your Irish Setter
With your cash and your trash and your sinks and your drinks
Just **** yourself 'til you can't even think
Those of you who enjoy this songthank you thank you, I love you
Let's get it on
But for those of you who are totally outraged
**** yourself with your face

"He knew what Resi was thinking, he could taste it like rust in the air. They thought alike, always had. Perhaps thats why they were both bastards. But Freepower had the girl, and had left Resi long ago with no-one but a guitar for company, and but 3 fingers to play it with. He had played his move, let Resi know he was going to kick dirt into his teeth one more time. He finished this post, and then went to bed, waiting for the drama to unfold."

To think, i was missing out all those years. And now they've changed the law so even gay oral sex is technically rape for someone when underage. That sucks. Or doesnt, come (heehee come) to think about it.
Anyway, who knows where that site is where groupies log on and tell the world how big different rock stars penises are? Time to laugh at various shredders, methinks!
