That's a really hard question, but it was a mixture of mid 90s trance and REM. Out of time was the first album i owned and i loved it.

My initial loves were the beatles, rory gallagher, bob dylan, my parent's stuff basically, but i really started being really into music with dance and REM.

And then i was (am) a huge obsessive muse fan, without matt bellamy i'd never have picked up a guitar. Now i love music more and more as time goes on, life is good. :)

Well....uh I've always been music oriented but what pretty much lead me up to now was from being a Nu-metal kiddie when I was about 9 (I also listened to rap at that time...) and then I started listening to Ozzy and Iron Maiden and then Beatles, Pink Floyd, and a lot of classic rock and then to heavier and heavier metal from just things like BLS, Metallica and Pantera down to what I listen to now like Nile and Morbid Angel.

Oh and also from pink floyd I got into more prog stuff and uh the metal lead me to shred.

the ibanez rg series is good for shredding but keep in mind that just becasue you get a "shred guitar" you won't just become a great shredder. even though it will be a lot easier to shred on an rg than a les paul remember that its your hand that makes the big difference.

Firstly, why has someone pointed out that in some random internet list that Clapton's While My Guitar gently weeps solo is number 42? Am i missing something? I think it's a great solo, its not technically flashy but it fits the song so well. Cant say ive heard Shawn Lane's All Along the Watchtower solo...

Secondly, Alter Bridge are OK, very much like Creed- not always a good thing- but Tremonti has pretty good chops and i suppose its good to see mainstream players playing well. I didnt like that Total guitar thing he did, it sounds like me noodling around in the harmonic minor scale, its not really original or anything. Gilbert's lesson in that issue on harminc minor string skipping 3 note per string runs was infinitely more inspiring.

I think its an awesome solo too, gotta say.

And as for AATW - its a different "feel" from hendrix's version, but the rhythm playing is just incredibly divine, every fill is a godly fill, there's a sneaky little stretch lick that just sounds sooooo good, there's a brilliant bit of phrasing on one note, fantastic embellishment of an original melody, and then a huge diminished wank fest while the band cut out for a while.

I was almost dissapointed when the song dissolved into that, it does break the mood a little, but the rest is divine, and the diminished stuff DOES play a role in the end...

Its a great solo, but its one you have to pay attention to all through, y'know? It's not like you can just jump in and think "Nice lick" "Nice lick"... its a whole solo, and any individual part would sound only half as good without the rest.

http://s47.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=18STC4B7CNAJD0GXGWJOD7N8SQ

My favourite solo atm.

The end, he sounds a bit like vai, which I give him credit for, but other than that, not much else in it.

Freepower
11-20-2005, 12:35 PM
^ really? I find the hendrix version far far more rowdy, less pretty, noisier - the SL version has the cleaner sounding guitar, light delay, and a lighter touch on the guitar work, as well as a decidedly more gentle voice...

I find them completely different. And what do you mean, you give him credit for sounding like Vai?

Resiliance

The note choice throughout the song - aside from the obvious - isn't really much different, and I have to honestly say I prefer Hendrix's version, probably out of nostalgia.

What you said about noisier, sure... But it fits the tune.

Shawn Lane's AAWT is impressive but IMO lacks the feel of Hendrix's. I think the fact that everything was technically "spot-on" took from the song. Hendrix was sloppy but who cares? He felt every note, and in this, I feel Shawn didn't.

I heard the SL version of AATW yesterday. It was pretty cool. The end of it is yes, a wankfest, but it really rocks. And it is very smooth, damn is it smooth!

And, I think I just figured out oscillation. :headbang: If not, it's just modified a slight bit, because I have my hand right, I just don't know what to pick with. I don't think it matters because with that method, there's no tension with anything. Also, I use my pinky to anchor my hand in order to keep a very small pick movement base, and I can hit really kick ass speeds now. I've only used it for five minutes, and can easily see the difference.

Freepower
11-21-2005, 05:19 PM
^ remove the pinky and float, use a gentle touch of the palm to the strings if you really need it. You couldnt do a SL diminished with your pinky down, i think it'd quite literally tear off.

The awesome thing about oscillation is the incredible instant relief of tension, im not very good at it yet, so i tend to alternate between transverse with a little oscilliatory and oscilliatory when im practicing it, and i really notice the difference instantly. :)

I think you're right, i dont think he felt the "hendrix" original parts as much as hendrix did, and they make up a good portion of the song. The shawn parts (the fills in the rhythm, the end solo) are as emotive as any solo i've ever heard - for me. ;)

I was considering posting "Get you back" as well, which is just as awesome, but all original, perhaps you guys would enjoy that more?

"credit where credit's due", as far as lane goes, he may not play the hendrix bits as well as hendrix, but where he has some freedom he outplays him, imo.

Like the harmonics in the background very tasteful, sounds like a mellower justin king - and the actual melody is nice too, it reminds me of a Vai song but i can't remember which one. Maybe just reminds me of Vai, but you would expect that and find it a compliment, no?

Overall, nice, simple hapy-go lucky with a smattering of bonus quiet guitarist, i like it, but it needs developing and length, obviously. :)

The problem with SL's Wachtower for me is it sounds a bit sterile, yes, he rips up the fretboard-no one can dispute the guy's ability, but it just lacks something, maybe it lacks feel. I feel the saMe about George Lynch's version, the rhythym guitar, the drums and the vocals all sound a bit weedy, and the guitar is TOO polished. Hendrix's leads sounds flame-grilled, passionate, intergalactic-the others don't.
Still, awesome shredding by Lane at the end. Freepower, post more Shawn Lane please!

Got the G3 tokyo dvd today, and having only skimmed through it, i must say John Petrucci comes across as very melodic indeed, especially on Glasgow Kiss.
Other notable things
-More homoerotic stage antics between Vai and Sheehan.
-Vai's insistence on having a fan blowing in his face(?)
-Vai's awesome note choice.
-Satch's awesome legato and whammy bar manipulation.
-Petrucci's awesome alt picking
-Satch's bass player - Bisonette?- singing smoke on the water and doing a pretty good job too.
-SMoke on the Water having two bass players(?)
-Satch trying to sound low and sexy singing Foxey Lady.
-Satch addressing the audience in Japanese.
-Mike Portnoy turning up for a bit of drumming on the g3jam.
-Billy Sheehan's tapped harmonics on a bass!
-Billy Sheehan's double neck bass!!

All in all though, the playing is, as usual, of a ridiculously high standard throughout and i'm warming to Petrucci, after previously dismissing him as too cold and clinical, he's actually quite a passionate player.
Buy it if you want to be reminded you need to practise more.

though I'd like to point out that I find Satch's vox on Foxey Lady is abysmal, but the man redeems himself when during the commentary in the sound-check he says "I have an amazingly low vocal range *laughter*"

of all three, though he has terrible stage-presence, Petrucci's playing was stellar.

I haven't heard all he has to offer; i cant really get hold of much of his stuff to say for sure, but a player's tone and feel is just as important to me as the notes they play, and Lane's Watchtower just didn't grab me. I'm well aware of how good the guy is, but at this level of ability a player needs that extra something to grab me...
Just watched Gilbert's Intense Rock and having been listening to a lot of his stuff lately, im surprised by his humour, the way he doesn't pretend to be an absolute God on the instrument, he seems friendly and the attitude he puts into his playing, even on an instructional video really blew me away.

edit: Am I the only one annoyed at people who thinks petrucci is just an emotionless shredder? they need to hear songs like goodnight kiss and finally free, the solos in there I think are very passionate and emotional.

I love john petrucci! I saw him on the G3 dvd and i really love glassgow kiss and not as much but still an awesome song, damage control. I have a question though, what colour is his guitar? It seems like the color changes depending on how the light shines at it. I checked the music man website and it said polyutherane (or some big word like that) finish. Does this mean it is one of those thats colour changes depending on the light cus i've seen stuff like that on cars?

^ remove the pinky and float, use a gentle touch of the palm to the strings if you really need it. You couldnt do a SL diminished with your pinky down, i think it'd quite literally tear off.

The awesome thing about oscillation is the incredible instant relief of tension, im not very good at it yet, so i tend to alternate between transverse with a little oscilliatory and oscilliatory when im practicing it, and i really notice the difference instantly.Yes, I suck at it. But I want to get better, it seems like it could become much more efficient, but right now it's extremely difficult.

I think I'm finally going to get the "Melodic Control" video by Marty Friedman. I'm getting a Blank DVD for my friend to burn it on, I can't wait. Plus I just got Cliff Em' All, and Cliff's solos are definitely teh roXors.

"Uh, yeh, i like these sweeps"

As a sweeping beginner, you try and follow what he does, but obviously, with no tab, no slow version, no explanation, no NAMING OF THE EFFING SHAPE...

"Yeh, and you should try this - *SWEEP SWEEP* - *no explanation*"

It's not that I cant play it, it just annoys me that you cant see the actual speed as in powertab. I think gp4 capped speed is like 10 nps. Believe me, I can handle it. I just really dislike it skipping around. It's more of an annoyance, not a necessity. That's one of the reasons I like powertab better. :p:

Actually I think it is less. For simplicity's sake, I opened up Baroque and Roll, and the first single string run he does, which is approx 12 nps, skips when it is 3/4 done with the bar. What does that mean? For one thing, DEFINITELY not much higher than 10.

I prefer the way of marking notes in GP by FAR though.

Beckerism
11-25-2005, 01:41 PM
That is true that it has a good way of showing the tablature, but sometimes I also like to see both parts being played at the same time, (such as if you dl SMS off PT) so it's a double edged sword. You probably know what you are talking about anyways. I don't actually use the programs to tab out, but steal others and learn pre-tabbed out songs. :p:

Take the notes, (it was 32th note) divide it by 4, then multiply that number by the beats per min, then divide by 60.

So (32/4)(145/60) Atleast I think it was 145 beats per min.

Yeah, the PT's do fine. I think Nobuo is the best video game composer. I had a list last night that was almost done, and I accidentally signed off.... I'll make it again. It was my favorite FF tunes.
-The theme during the opening credits on FFX. Before the menu comes up. It also plays when you first get to Zanarkand
-"Ami"- FF8
-Cosmo Canyon- FF7
-FF8 Panic Music (ie: "Only a Plank Between One and Perdition")
-Lunatic Pandora-FF8- OMFG I love this one. I have a game saved inside it just so I can listen to it whenever I want. The intro is pwnzoRz x 70 million. If you haven't heard it, get to Disc 3 immediately.
-Music during "The Spring" video on FFX. When Tidus swims with Yuna in a corny romantic encounter. The graphics are beyond amazing and the song is beautiful.
-The theme played in the Train Graveyard, and Nibelheim, in FF7. That is one of my all time favorites.
-The Balamb theme- FF8

Take the notes, (it was 32th note) divide it by 4, then multiply that number by the beats per min, then divide by 60.

So (32/4)(145/60) Atleast I think it was 145 beats per min.

And for example, a 16th run at 30 bpm would be

(16/4)(30/60)
how about if there are triplets/quituplets/sextuplets/septuplets/ect........?

Resiliance
12-06-2005, 08:40 AM
^I don't really think the way that formula's explained is really clear :p:

I use: (bpm/60).note division(16ths = 4, 8th triplets = 3, 8ths = 2, etc...)

Easy as pie.

Freepower
12-06-2005, 10:42 AM
A septuplet is 7 notes to the beat. So figure out how many beats per second via (bpm/60) and then multiply that for bpm. For goodness sake, i figured it out myself, its simple maths.

Buy Van Halen 1 and 2, Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz, The Infinite Steve Vai, The Electric Joe Satriani, Cacophony's Speed Metal Symphony and Yngwie's Rising Force- Give them a listen and see what you think, if you're like me and were blown away then i would suggest getting POwertab Editor or Guitar Pro as these programmes allow you to see the score and the tab, they often have performance notes about certain techniques as well as the ability to slow down parts and play along with them etc...
The world of shred is often viewed as elitist and inaccessable to mere mortals but thats not the case and stuff like the artists ive listed are- believe it or not- all about speed- Get the transcriptions, study them like mad and see what these guys are doing, what they play thats different to rock, blues players etc-basically, why they are virtuosos.

Aside from this, the best advice to is to practise like your'e possessed, but those guys are right, dont immediately think ' right, how fast can i play?' work on your cleanliness and articulation, these are things that separate a good player from a great player- in a technical sense of course, IMO Dave Gilmour says more with three notes than other players can with fifty, but phrasing is something thats individual to you and will mature with your ability and confidence.

What do you think of this (That Song)? I wrote it, in no particular scale, or meaning. I just jammed and wrote what I played. The first part turned out unexpectedly successful. The sweeping is kind of hard though. I especially like the acoustic, I'm really proud of myself for that, especially with this being the first song I really took seriously. It isn't done, but I just wanted to see if sounded OK to others.

The second one (Another Song) is just a couple riffs that turned out unexpectedly bluesy, so I put in a tenor sax and it sounds funny, lol.

Edit- lol, I put the wrong file up on "That Song." It stopped abruptly because I put the Zip file I hadn't modified in a while on here. Oh well, it's fixed now, so it's cool to hear now.

He plays with his fingers I noticed, he should work on that, but other than that he's good. He has a lot of covers in google video, try googlevideoing his name and you get 30 results.

And to Ugliest Weenie (what a strange name...)- put up stuff you want to learn how do do or make a thread on it and people are bound to help more there than here.

And to apocalypse- I'll listen to your song in a minute.

okay- listened to it now, here's a few thoughts-
For That Song
Measure 17 to the repeat thing should be faster and maybe with the acoustic guitar accompanying with an octave higher, or with the electric higher and the acoustic lower.
It's strange how it goes straight from the solo-type thing in the begining to a repeated rythme/melody and only really does that for the rest of the song, but I understand that this is only an idea.
I would suggest starting out with the acoustic part, then to the melody that is presented in measure 17 then getting faster, and then the solo then chorus and then acoustic again.
These are just suggestions and I'll listen to the other song later.
It's good too.

And about a practice schedule, ask someone like freepower maybe since he's more of an authority than yours truly.

Not at all, seriously. :)

Um, fundamentals are where its at. The ability to keep your fingers low, play cleanly and stay loose right and left handed are the three most important things. If you're doing all that, the rest of technique comes down to researching the correct method and slowly and methodically getting the fundamentals of that sorted.

With fundamentals, you can knock down the "wall" of technique from the base. If you start with keeping your fingers low and loose, then that makes complex fingerings, legato, HO only legato, scale work and chord work about a million times easier when you reach them.

And learn your theory. Whats the point of being able to rip around a fretboard if you can't even make a decent melody over a simple chord?

Yeah, I think I'll just uninstall it.

All you have to do to upload a PT file is:

1. Go to the file and right-click it, and select "Send To," then "Compressed (Zipped) Folder."

2. Then on UG, select "Manage Attatchments" on the post screen.

3. Then find your zipped file, and upload it.

The reason for the zipped folder is that UG doesn't accept .ptb file extensions, so you have to put it un a .zip file extension.
