So, it took three tries to delete the last one, but the warm, fuzzy feeling finally came over me when it disappeared.
Regardless, this is the new and improved Only Thrash Metal thread. If you want to talk about Thrash Metal, this is where to do it. That includes Children of Bodom, for the bitter ones. Our resident chemicalsolutio will be posting a list of recommended Thrash bands - listen to them, talk about them, enjoy.

I thought I?d put some recommendations of thrash/speed bands on the first page in order to incite people to discover new bands. Many of those bands have a link to a site where you can find mp3?s, but if there isn?t any link, you can maybe find some audio files at http://vibrationsofdoom.com/test/index.html . The only problem is that they are .ram files. The list is subject to change whenever I feel like it. I will be updating it, adding new bands or removing bands I judge inappropriate. And I still don?t know what I?m going to do with Black/Thrash and Death/Thrash bands yet, so I?ll figure it out later. Here?s the list:

There's a lot there I haven't heard, but of the ones I have, I'd definitely recommend the likes of Sacred Reich, Sodom, Kreator and Overkill to any up-and-coming thrash fans. And on a side not, Annihilator= thrash, uh, they don't sound very thrashy to me....Jeff Waters is more kind of swingy, they don't 'chug' that often.

What have you heard of them? Listen to Alice in Hell and Never, Neverland. That stuff is genious and pretty good thrash.
BTW, good list chemicalstudio. I have heard of the majority of those bands but the ones I don't know I'l check out.

While I'm here, why don't I bring up an age old debate that seems to never have a definitive answer.
How do you classify Venom?
Yes, yes, they released "Black Metal", laying the roots for the genre, but you have to admit- Venom sounds nothing like black metal at all.
So where do they fit in? Are they to be considered BM simply for an album title, or are they to be genrified by their sound in and of itself?

I've always thought of them as a transition band between NWOBHM and modern thrash.
In a similar way that Possessed was a transition band between thrash and death.

Woo! Cyclone Temple! I found an old CD of theirs, and purchaed it solely on the name, expecting it to be just empty-headed power metal lmao. But instead of Power, I got PWNAGE!!!
Listen now. Recommended for people who like more melodic vocals/music.
EDIT: the CD was I Hate, Therefore I Am. I should have guessed it wasn't power by the name ;)

^Don't forget Dark Angel or Destruction. They are fairly well known.
On Venom Topic:I think they are Thrash/Speed, because to me they sound very similiar to Overkill.
On no topic:are Coroner Thrash? I'm in no position to judge because I haven't listened to any of there stuff in months and I was just thinking of them.

Well I have that problem with Black/thrash bands: Celtic Frost, Venom, Occult... and Death/thrash bands. I do not want to include them very much on the first page, but they can be discussed. And I also did not put Diamond Head, who were discussed of in the last thread, since they're not even thrash.

Holy **** that was terrible. It sounded way more like Nickelback at times than Metallica. It's definitely not thrash.

Well the First Sin Demo had great songs/riffs on it and vocals sounded less like mainstream rock than what the new album will sound like.

I've finally decided to check Anthrax out, so I bought: Spreading the Disease and State of Euphoria. I'm kind of disppointed. Spreading The Disease has some good songs, but it does not sound like thrash very much. Sounds more like some heavy metal to me, so I was kind of disappointed to see how many people adore them and consider them thrash, but whatever.

Anthrax have the most NWOBHM influence in their music, but songs like "Among the Living" and "Caught in a Mosh" are definatly thrash.

Sepultura's early records can be considered thrash.I.e 'Beneath the Remains' and 'Arise'.
But after that they slowed down and progressively got ****tier by each album.
If only they stayed a thrash band, because I thought they were amazing:(
By the way I just got Anthrax's first record with Neil Turbin on vocals, 'Fistfull of Metal', and to be honest I'm pretty dissapointed with it.
Joey's vocals on Anthrax's later stuff is much much better. Turbin's vocals, and the songs in general are just way too over the top and melodramatic. They just sounded like a cheesy Judas Priest rip-off.

I wouldnt call later Sepultura Thrash because it doesn't possess the same speed as the Thrash Metal Genre boasts.
I personally think Chaos AD is a great album, although not a thrash album, a good Metal album nonetheless.
Like most here, I prefer the thrashier stuff through Schizophrenia to Arise... (I'm personally not huge on Morbid Visions, Max sounds like he's burping at times) The earlier stuff had an energy to it that made you want to go nutty. Especially The Main Riff in Arise... It makes me want to destroy something... preferably valuable.

I said the vocals are more accessable not the lyrics, meaning the style of singing/growling. Brujeria growl in Spanish and Nile occationally growl in Ancient Egyptian, which is more accessable? Brujeria, because the vocals are nowhere near as aggressive regardless or language/lyrical themes. This example is no different.
I own both albums and enjoy them, but they're still not thrash. Listen to Arise, then listen to Chaos or Roots, they are clearly completely different.

IMO Chaos A.D. was a pretty good record, but Roots was just bad. Chaos was somewhat of a bridge between the thrash days and the numetalish Roots album, and it turned out pretty good. The tribal drumming was more apperent which helped it stand out as a unique album. Roots on the other hand, was far too simplified and numetalish for my tastes.
I just thought most of the riffs on Chaos A.D. blew. All slow and no drive. I mean, that's not to say I dislike slow music, even metal, but for the sound they have, slow doesn't work.

I guess it's just one of those cases where if another band put it out as a debut it might be looked more up to. But looking at Sepultura, it's not the output expected, thus a more negative response. As much as people deny that theres bias in that way, to be honest there always is. Example: Load

Chaos AD and Roots are boring albums - especially after listening to albums like Arise - \m/
I think I would have enjoyed Chaos A.D. more if they had a total sound overhaul, instead of just simplifying what they had. Yeah, they threw in a couple new elements like that wierd acoustic song dedicated to all the guys in prison, but beyond that, it struck me as a crappy, boring Arise.
It could have been good, but they just took what they had and dumbed it down instead of trying something new.
I have no problem with bands changing their sound (thats not entirely true, but if I feel no particular attachment to the band, like Sepultura, it is), and if they'd tryed to be different, I think I would have liked it more. Sorry, I'm just rambling now, but I hope I got my point across haha
Well guess im biased Cause Chaos A.D is my fav album ...what more can I say except that songs like refuse/resist ,biotech is godzila ,amen ,territory(wicked drum solo) are perhaps my fav sepultura tracks yes I do like Arise Benith the Remains but I dig the sound of Chaos more ...well thats my 2cents with a few spelling mistakes
And Roots isnt that bad really its not all solid but Ratamahata and Dictator**** ..awsome tracks
SickMetal
08-11-2005, 03:28 PM
Yea, IMO Chaos A.D. is a decent record but the reason I didn't like it as much as the others was because it was dumbed down. Still, it had some very good tracks and the unique drumming kind of made up for it to me.
It would be better as just a one-time experimental album, but they furthered it with Roots and it turned into pure shit.

While I still like both albums, Sep did pretty much go belly-up after Arise. After that it was just a slow change into Soulfly, and Soulfly is worthless.

Once Max did a song with Fred Durst, that's just....:(
well i havnt listened to soulfly ..the only band i want to listen to with Max is Sepultura and from time to time Nailbomb ...I did see a couple of video's from them ,but fred durst wtf ?!..Max pls go back to Sepultura ,PLS
Heh too bad they have such differences with one another I read somewhere that since Sepultura broke up Max hasnt spoken to his brother ..sad really

I can't believe the same dude who made "Arise" is in a numetal band :(

Mastodon are hard to classify. They border on thrash at times but at the same time can sound a little like metalcore. I'd count them as metal though, possibly just a modern take on classic Heavy Metal.

Yea, kind of what it is I guess. They have their own sound, which I respect them for :)
mer_de_noms, I know very little about the Haunted but I heard that "The Haunted Made Me Do It" is one of their better works. Don't take my word for it though.
So, I'm having trouble classifying Martyr. Their vox and tunings are classic thrash, but you really don't see much "tech" thrash beyond the solos. Would you call them thrash metal?
At first I just lumped them in with the Tech Death crowd of Quebec, but I'm pretty sure they aint death, you know? It's a stupid technicality question, but I'm just wondering.

I've always counted Martyr as tech death, the drums and guitars are just that little bit more brutal than your average thrash band. I suppose they could be death/thrash like The Crown or Vader, but I'm still happy calling them tech death.

I always see them as technical death metal. But yeah the vocals aren't really death metal, but that doesn't matter. And the guitars aren't really thrash.

The Children Of Bodom thread has done in 2 days what the Thrash thread did in a week. We gotta get into serious discussion because a single band has had more conversation going on the a whole Metal genre.
Btw, I am not insulting Children Of Bodom in any way. I am just saying this is a fairly slow thread and we should try and pick up the pace.
Okay, back to Thrash, what is everyones least favourite songs off some of their favourite Thrash albums?

Get both. Reign in Blood is loaded with kickass riffs. South of Heaven's my personal favorite, as I find it has more a mature approach and isn't afraid to dabble in slow tempos.

you could also get Seasons in the Abyss because it has some of their classic songs like War Ensemble, Dead Skin Mask and the haunting sound of the title track. As for other thrash bands, any of you got Beast of Bourbon by Tankard. Its got some nice fast, aggressive riffs, the elements good german thrash is made up of.

It was all backwards for me, Hell Awaits got me into Slayer and it is probably my favourite at the time being. What I think they should have done though was combined Hell Awaits with Haunting The Chapel and scrapped Hardening Of The Arteries(its a good song but they should have just used some riffs and solos in some other songs instead). Then with the four songs from Haunting The Chapel + seven songs from Hell Awaits - Hardening of The Arteries there would be 10 tracks, like the traditional Slayer album.

Seasons in the Abyss had a clean intro too, and usually longer songs means it's not accessible to the mainstream, because the mainstream wants catchy 3-4 minute songs. I agree with the Haunted in that it's somewhat of a combination between RiB, SoH, and SitA.

Yeah R.I.B is a pretty good starter, though I think people underate Show No Mercy too much.
Its a bit tamer then their later releases, but I really like the raw, less serious style that they had back then.
And overall I find that the album to musically be more diverse than R.I.B.

For me it was Disciple, God Send Death and Exile were the only ones that stood out. And if songs on a Slayer album stick out, its not a true Slayer album because usually all the songs should be near perfect anyways. I guess it has been the Slipknot influence.....
Anyone have/see War At The Warfield? On some of the solo's they just improvised. I think they either just got bored, or have smoked/drank them selves retarded to the point where they can't do something they have done a thousand times....

What about Megadeth?
I personally love the band.
The lineup has changed quite a bit, and we all now Mustaine has a little bit of an ego, but I think the music is great. What do you guys think?

Megadeth = good
However they only have a few decent albums
RIP, CTE and PSBWB are great, the others are boring.
I bought the DVD Rude Awakening a few weeks ago - its pretty cool, every song is played perfectly but there isn't chemistry with that line up. It seems like instead of Megadeth it should be Dave Mustaine.
i enjoy megadeth, especially now ive been listening to them a lot. I had a bootleg of an entire show in london and it was pretty good quality, for guitar playing tis amazing, mustaine rhythms and friedman's exotic solos.

I have a DVD of a show somewhere in Scandinavia of Slayer. I bought it before I knew they were going to release War at the warfield. It's a sad that Jeff's guitarsound is aweful but the concert was pretty good and with Dave on drums. I also own WaW, Still Reigning and Live Intrusion. I think Live Intrusion is the best: :headbang: At dawn they sleep :headbang: Kill, KiLL , KILLLL!!!!

Metallica - Kill Em' All
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Testament - Practice What You Preach
Annihilator - Alice In Hell
Kreator - Extreme Aggression/Coma Of Souls(Don't own these because I can't get Kreator here but I have downloaded quite a few of these songs previously)
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends(Don't actually have this one either, but I have heard at least 5 of the 7 tracks and it sounds more than worth it)
Edit: These aren't my favourite thrash albums, but for a Thrasher, I would reccomend them.

I'm in a bad situation as far as Megadeth goes...
I bought Peace Sells a while ago and listened to it, I like Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells, and My Last Words, but the rest of the album is just kind of...bad. The lyrics are typical chessy gory stuff, and the guitars are just as cheesy sometimes, such as the beginning of The Conjuring. Everybody loooves Megadeth but they just don't do it for me...are there any albums that sound different? (Besides Risk, that CD is a piece of ****)...

Yeah the Cause for Conflict, Outcast and Endorama phase is bad, except for a few good songs which they play on Live Kreation
