Alright, I couldn't leave this place without a bit of shock :p:
As you know, we've had problems with CoB on UG before, but we're going to give this another shot.
This is the Only Children of Bodom thread - NOT for flaming, not for insults, none of that shit. I don't care if you don't like them - this is for the people that do.
Keep it halfway mature and somewhat on topic, and we won't have problems, okay?
Have fun.
Good job! Now, lets give Spike a goodbye present and not **** this up, ok team?

I happen to like CoB. I've liked them for quite a while now, Alexi has some of the sickest chops I've seen, especially him being so young. And they're keyboard player is great.

they would a lot better if they got rid of their keyboard player, imo. and never replaced him.

i like all of their songs
i dont know why people feel the need to hate them so much
(well locally they often do)
and to be honest
i like the keyboard parts in most songs
although it does sometimes sound awkward
like theres two sources of music out of time..

I didn't particularly like them live. I thought they were horrible, it shouldn't have been the venue because its renound locally for its awesome sound system, but who knows. I didn't really like the mix at all (maybe their sound guy isnt so hot) and they got alittle wankish. Especially the keys, they were terribly wankish and.. just... meh overall. And he had the keys at some funky angle pointed towards the crowd and stuff. it was weird.
I ended up walking out after 20 minutes, despite the urge to watch alexi play.

Ahh... Children of Bodom. Prob one of my favorite bands! Laiho is fantastic guitar player. I love his classical influence. Something Wild is by far my favorite, while Hatebreeder comes in 2nd. The new album didn't turn me on so much, few songs were cool, but overall no. I hope to see em live someday!

I think they're alright. Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper was good........
Hate Crew Deathroll was pure garbage, IMO. I haven't heard the new CD yet.....hopefully it's not as bad as the last one.

YAY! I've been waiting for this..... hope it doesn't go to crap.
Unfortunatly i've seemed to like Bodom abit less then early this summer when all the threads were going on :p:
Are You Dead Yet? was abit of a dissapointment. Some songs like We're not going to Fall and Trashed Lost and Strungout are probably my favorite on it.

-YAOW YAOW
-More fast playing
-YAOW YAOW

-Keyboard Guitar Solo pt. 2
-YAOW YAOW YAOW YAOW

I find it's their newer albums (HCDR and AYDY) that repeat alot. And you can tell that he's playing in the same general area in the new one. I really got into Hatebreeder, love the whole album, Something Wild is just decent to me, Follow the reaper is great. I'd love to see them live. If they're touring in the US or Canada in the summer, then i'll see them.

No way man, SW sucks balls. HB, FTR and HCDR are THE ****. AYDY was decent, but I didn't think it was as consistent as previous efforts. The only outstanding songs off it are LDB, AYDY and TLSO. The rest are either just good or meh.

'Are You Dead Yet?' seems to have a strong industrial feel to it, with synth layered over the guitars. It seems to be less creative than their previous albums. Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder were much better albums (their best imo), and Alexi Laiho is pretty overrated.
Also I don't mind the keyboards, even if Janne Warman is a bit of a wank, he's a virtuoso on keys.
All in all CoB has great melodies, harmonies, and riffs, but the lyrics tend to suck hard, and Alexi's thrashish/black/death vocals get irritating after awhile.

Well firstly, weither you know it or not, Mikael and Peter can shred. I have seen it with my own eyes. Secondly, their solos are better. Why? They mesh with the music better. The song isnt some basic format where all you do is wait for an annoying wankage of a guitar solo. So far from what I have gathered, listening to bodom for around 4 or 5 years, is that the only thing the band is noted for, or even listened to, is because either A: People are wannabe metalheads. or B: People want to listen to the wank. Personally, listening to alexi rip off other artists' chops for a good minute and a half is annoying.
I don't know where the shot at Opeth came from, but that wasnt a very bright idea, considering I know many people who would say that Opeth are much more brilliant as a whole and as solo artists than bodom will ever be. They can write actual music, not just a wankery guitar solo, AND they can incorperate many different genres into one particular piece. They might not want to play a certain sweep pattern for a minute like Alexi, but they also want to write MUSIC, not wank off material *cough*
Like I was saying, most bodom fans listen to it for the wankery or for the status, but yeah, bodom is neither high in many true metalhead's eyes NOR very talented, so I guess people are just idiots.

Opeth don't tend to shred on the albums. They do it live, but on the albums, the jazz/blues solos fit the mood much better. Plus, some of their riffs are wicked hard, even if they don't sound like it.

In my opinion Opeth do too much of that expiremental acoustic stuff. Im not a huge fan but from the songs I have heard and the mixed CD I have. Now dont get me wrong some of the acoustic stuff goes very well with the music but some of it sounds forced.
Bodom on the other hand mission is too shred everyones ass off which at first is cool but by the 10th song I am so not in the mood for bodom anymore

Comparing Children of Bodom to Opeth is like comparing apples to nuclear weapons. They have nothing in common.
My opinion on CoB-a lot of their stuff sounds exactly the same, and the keyboards do get kind of cheesy. I still like these guys a lot, though. They were one of the first metal bands I ever got into, and they got me into melodic death (back when they were accepted as melodic death and not thrash).

I love COB! I think they do a very good job of applying the classical feel to metal applications. I can listen to Bodom for hours and hours on end. Everytime I seem to find something new in the songs that I can relate to my guitar playing or technique. My favorite song is Children of Bodom, the breakdown keyboard riff in that song sends chills down my back. I also really like Bed of Razors, Silent Night Bodom Night, Black Widow, and Fear The Reaper.

To the guys saying Aleix's solos fit:
Well duh, he has about 3 different song formats so he can use the same chops over.. and over... and over again. for like 10 albums. No wonder why they fit.
He is like the kirk hammet of (insert genre here) basically he is a one trick pony. And yes, I love kirk hammet before we get into that, its just the stuff all sounds the same basically, Sure, there is a difference, but its all relatively close.
He IS good at guitar though. not great, just good.
Has anyone heard the song "Hate Me" ? Am I the only one on earth who thinks its quite possibly the most annoying intro/gheyest concept ever? I was just thinking about it, I really hate that song. I know alexi doesnt give a **** if I hate him, but he sure gave me a funny look when I was shouting insults his way. I think I hurt his feelings =x

I can understand why people think Bodom solos are wankery, in fact, I think that's true to an extent. But there are also many solos out there that I find REALLY fit the songs well. Wankery isn't even always necessarily a bad thing, I mean, how much respect does Petrucci have around here?

I personally really, really like the band, and think the keyboard is what gives them their flare. If they didn't have those sick keyboard solos and intros, they wouldn't be Children of Bodom. They'd be like a hybrid of Chimaira and Trivium, or something. Still good, but not as good.
My favorite songs: If you want peace, prepare for war!, Are You Dead Yet?, Livind Dead Beat, Trashed, Lost and Strungout, and who can forget: Needled 24/7 (my #1). The keyboards in Trashed, Lost and Strungout aswell as Needled 24/7 are furious. Guitar riffs kick ass, too.

Children Of Bodom is a cool band, but a better Finnish band is Stratovarius. Singer, Drummer, Guitarist, Basist and Keyboardist, their Keyboardist is awesome and their singer is reminiscent of Bruce Dickinson in a way. Check em out ;)

i find that for the most part, people are disliking CoB now only because they have become almost as popular as any band in the Metalcore genre. I think that is completely ridiculous but i know that some people acctually hated them from there first album. If you never liked them, thats just you, but it really bothers me how some people who have liked them in the past but dislike the new album and go on verbal rampages to prove there "metal superiority" and even deny ever liking them..
Id also like to add that the new album isnt that huge of a change for CoB, it could have been alot worse, people are too picky sometimes

The new album sucks more **** than Elton John & Graham Norton put together. On the posistive side, Follow the Reaper, Hatebreeder, & Something Wild are all ****ing excellent albums.

Alexi produces great solos, [which are influenced Vivaldi I'll have you know.] much better than those that come from ****ium who bum Metallica to death & rip off all of their riffs & layer their music really stupidly.

The point wasn't actually that they would be that much like those bands at all. My point wasn't what bands they would be similar to without the keys, it was that the keys are a big part of who they are and how great they sound. Without those keys, they would be like just any other random metal (or metalcore) band. It's what sets them apart, at least in my opinion. Though the rest of the band truly are good at what they do, a good keyboardist is extremely uncommon. Hell, the only other band I like that I can think of who use keys is Rammstein, and they're industrial... which is a common industrial characteristic from what I gather; yet CoB are more pushed towards Power Metal. So, the point I'm making is: They're unique.
Whatever, I like the band. They kick ass.

HateCrew was alright but i have to say it is not the best ive heard from them. I did enjoy a good bit though.
I haven't even heard the new CD although I have heard it is their least techical album they've ever done as far as guitar playing. All I have heard from that CD is "IN Your Face" which I thought was fair but not breathtaking. Not as technical as their old stuff.
It is kind of understandable though since he broke his right arm and lost his chops for awhile.........I dont want to jump to saying they've lost it or they are selling out yet.

Is it just me or do people over use the word "wank" a lot and the numerous forms of it? :p:
Anyhow.. CoB is an awesome band to me personally for their compositional skills. Personal favorites of this are Needled 24/7 and Angels Don't Kill.
Alexi's lyrics are a bit.. um.. off... but hey, you can't understand him half the time anyways.
But my favorite song out of any CoB album would have to be the fourth track from Hate Crew Deathroll. I can't remember the name right off the top of my head, but what gets me is when Alexi starts out that solo and goes into that monster of a run.. which, whether it be easy or hard to anyone.. is just awesome to me, and the intro drumming lines rock, too.
Lastly, to all the people that think Alexi is over rated, decent, etc, I do not think anyone here could pour such technique/skill into their music/soloing as Alexi does, else you all would be making money from it instead of posting about him. I say just use it as good inspirational tools to get better, and maybe when y'all are 26.. you'll be half as good as him. Which I think is amazing.. him being only 26 years of age and shredding like that and being so melodic about it.
That's just my two cents...

"His primary influence is the keyboard player Jens Johansson from Stratovarius (also played with guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen and Dio). He has adopted the oddity of tilting his keyboard slightly on-stage from his idol."

^I tried playing my keyboard in that kind of angle. Actually, it was easier to play when I was standing. I think it's because you can keep your wrists straight, and don't have to angle them. At least it creates less tension, which is definately a good thing.

As for Kalmah: just got some older stuff and its really god. Might get the new album.
As for Cob/Kalmah: I like them both to be honest Ive only heard a little Kalmah and their pretty even. Bodom have great instrumentalists and keyboards, and Laihos voice is just so badass and unique, you cant get that anywhere. I really don't see what anyone would have against Bodom. Alexi Laiho is amazing, and so is Janne Warmen. I can't see how some of you can say the keyboard is **** or how it doesnt belong. Listen to it a few times over then go listen to Warmen, Jannes other band. The keyboard makes Bodom what it is. Listen to these other AMAZING bands: Dark Tranquillity, Norther, Ensiferum, Kalmah, Wintersun, Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, Scar Symmetry, Masterplan, In Flames ( Synth Overdubs, Sampling), Dream Theater, Finntrool, Kiuas, Imperanon, Sonata Arctica, Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, Virtuosity, Symphony X, Helloween, Demons and Wizards, Dragonforce, Kotipelto,Warmen e.t.c. All these bands have keyboards. If you havent heard of most of these I suggest you check them out. They keyboards play a MAJOR role in these bands, the main leads, intros, breaks, outros, harmonized leads, main riffs everything, just the same as guitar. It sounds amazing. I love bands without keyboard aswell ex. Necropagist, Shadows Fall, Pantera, Atheist, Thine Eyes Bleed, e.t.c. My point is without keyboard these bands wouldnt be where they are, they wouldnt sound half as good, and they would be empty, and not half as good. When Alexi is up there soloing ,sometiems, he has Janne playing the same thing and its just awesome, when hes playing main leads he has Janne playing them and backing chords to it making it sound more fuller and more melodic.
Back to Bodom. I Love every album FTR and Hatebreeder beeing my favorites. Alexi is definately one of the sickist guitarists I've ever heard.
