I haven't followed the first 150 pages of this thread lol, but being new to the forum, I'd like to say that I think many people just assume all thrash/screaming/death metal is all crap just because they literally can't make those musical connections in their head telling them that the song musically makes sense
I listened to trivium for my first time about 2 years ago with a great understanding of music, yet it sounded like crap at first
It sounded like screaming and random, unconnected 'dead' notes being played in quick succession with no unison or formality
I slowly built my way up from 'easy' metal like enter sandman to death metal
(actually it went pretty fast)
Now I look at metal music as the most musically talented music aside from some symphonic pieces made in the previous centuries on piano
My point is; if people really tried listening to COB and learned to process the notes and the rhythm in their head, tried to hum or whistle the tune for once, I bet metal would be the the most popular music in the world and COB as well as many other metal bands would be respected for their deep understanding of music

I like the USA Alexi, too, but I kinda want 2 pickups. Also, if the Edwards RV is better, then I'd rather get it (for the same price XD)
So... I guess it's like:
Jap ESP > Dean
Edwards > ESP
And LTD is pretty much there if you don't wanna import an Edwards or can't afford an ESP?
Opinion more than anything. Build quality though IMO would be around...
Jap. CS ESP > A lot of things
ESP > Edwards
Edwards > LTD
The Edwards is more or less the Jap. version of LTD.
Either way, earlier I went to try out some new guitars and low and behold...they had 'em all!
I got to try out a ton of stuff, more importantly though, a few nice Jackson's and ESP's.
The American ESP-AL, the LTD-AL, along with, an RR1, KV2, and an RR24.
Sadly, everything I've heard about the RR24 apear to be true :(
It just did NOT feel like a thousand dollar guitar should...sucks too because I think cosmetically it's the best looking.
The ESP and USA's where VERY close, but the ESP felt better in my hands. This is so close though that it's more opinion than anything else.
The LTD was heads above the RR24 :(
All in all, the ESP and USA's where more or less tied. The LTD was better than the RR24.
Another thing, no RR24 has MoP inlays. All toliet seat :(
I really wish the RR24 was made to USA quality, because I prefer the smaller bevels compared to the larger ESP ones. If it had the make of a USA, it would be in my hands...sadly, this is not the case :(
Maybe if it was cheaper, but the fact is, it's just not worth the price tag...unless you only care about looks, but if that's the case you might want to check why you're playing guitar...

I dunno, I actually like the keyboards. Guy's got chops...for a keyboardist. And to be honest CoB is one of the only band where the intro are actually good. Most metal bands (and I mean metal not metalcore/glamcore) start with tons of banging then launch good riffs.

Also I know this is kinda off topic, but has any1 played the Alexi 200 yet? I'm a budding guitarist and my only guitar is a little squier so I wanted to get something a bit better but not too expensive, nothing over 600. Any suggestions? I really like The alexi but im tight on munnies ya know

You'd be better off going all out and getting a EMG's and floyd rose set up, like the alexi. However, they're a bit out of the range of 600. However, there is the ESP LTD MH-400. It's $659 with EMG's and a floyd rose licensed. It's awesome, up there with the alexi.

It might be opinionated because i tried out a the LTD alexi and it was good but no were near as good as the RR24 imo. So the only way you can know for sure witch is best for you, me and Cody have differant opinions on what makes a good guitar, and you probly will too.

They seem cool to me but bear these things in mind;
1. Floyd rose trems are great but are high maintenence, especially the licenced ones
2. V shape guitars are a aquired tase, I personally prefer them stood up and sat down
3. The best thing you can do is reaserch guitars for a while before even thinking of buying one. Read reviews, look into differant companies alternatives, see how much more guitar you can get for a bit more money and try out guitars for yourslef.
Hope that is any use to you :)

1. If you are fairly new to guitar, don't get a locking trem.
2. You should be looking at Schecter and Ibanez if you are in that price range. I suggest going to $650 and getting a Hellraiser, or if you really absolutely can't go above it then something from the Blackjack series. I think they are like $550, and it's pretty high quality for the price.
3. The fact that the Alexi 200 exists saddens me.

they would a lot better if they got rid of their keyboard player, imo. and never replaced him.
YOU DISCUST ME! Alexi is god all on his own but you NEED Janne Warman for all the intense "beepy" melodies, the keyboard is what seperates COB from all the shit wannabe melodic metal bands. On another note, Children Of Bodom is the best band in the whole ****ing world! I saw them on the Unholy Alliance last year in Vancouver and I own all their CD's and their DVD. Two things I'm sick of is people saying the music's good but the singing sucks, the singing is great! It's the icing on the metal cake, and the other thing I'm sick of is people saying they have no musical skill, that they just play fast, who ever says that is a dumb ****! Bodom just plays their amazing melodies so fast that the untrained ear doesn't realize what it just heard. COB fans are a new breed, an ultimate breed, The HateBreed(er)! LONG LIVE THE HATE CREW, and death to people who don't like the keyboard like the fag I quoted.

I beleive the keyboard is a good accomadation, but i dont like the setting they use. I feel in, for example, the intro for downfall kills the song, but it sounds good in the verse. Its hit or miss most of the time. The keyboard will sound really cool, or it will sound like it should be in a pop 80s song. Bodom still owns and Alexi Is God

Really...I mean...why? I just get so tired of hearing that over and over again with SOOOO many guitarist. I mean, it's one thing to say favorite/most influential/hot/sexy/leprechaun but I mean...come on!

Because he is the person alot of people on this forum would most like to be trapped on a desert island with. He could teach you guitar and you could have relations with him.
Not that I'd do that

well being favorite/most influential/hot/sexy/leprechaun does kind of put you near the status of God so.... :p:
he's a good guitarist, but they're defiantly are better. it's like when people say Slash is god, they just do it because they like him.

I'm guessing most likely because he can play really fast, isn't ridiculously popular yet, does entertaining things like breaking bones consistantly, and many girls find him extremely attractive for no evident reason.

Wow, Alexi's got it good. I guess he just has an aura of attractiveness. :haha
Okay... Who wanted the pink guitar GuitarWorld interview/article thing? Here it is... And FYI you owe me. That was a bitch to type. XD
Guitar ace Alexi Laiho from Finland's Children of Bodom is one of the newest players in ESP's artist roster. He's at the vanguard of young guitarists who have reinvigorated interest in virtuoso shredding. "Guys like Alexi are bringing back the kind of playing that took a back seat for a while," says Masciandaro. "For example, Steph Carpenter [of the Deftones] has been one of our big endorsees for 11 or 12 years, and he doesn't solo. That's just his thing, But now its coming back around. It's refreshing to see guys like Alexi out there doing what they do, Alexi and Children of Bodom gained popularity in Japan and Europe before the U.S., so in 2003 he developed a relationship with the folks at ESP Japan, where the band was touring a lot at the time."
Actually, ESP's Japanese wing came to Laiho's rescue at a time of dire need. His only two guitars, a pair of Jackson Flying Vs, got stolen right at the time when Jackson was changing hands, making it difficult for the guitarist to obtain suitable replacements in time to meet Children of Bodom's concert commitments.
"I had all these tours and gigs coming up, but I didn't have no goddamn guitars!" Laiho recalls. "ESP stepped in and said they could make new guitars for me, I gotta tell you, dude, I was very prejudiced against any other brand than Jackosn. But ESP proved me wrong and I’m glad they did."
First introduced in Japan, the ESP Alexi Laiho Signature Model is a classic metal-style asymmetrical Flying V. The guitar's initial color scheme- white with a geometric black pinstripe- was very much inspired by Randy Rhoads. Alexi's V is equipped with a Floyd Rose and a single, bridge-mounted EMG HZ H-4. He's definitely a one-pickup kind of guy. "I just like that 'mean' sound," he says, "that high-end thing. For metal, that's the perfect sound. When you're doing fast picking, I like that you can really hear that edge when the pick hits the string."
The EMG used in Laiho signature model is one of the company's few passive pickups, but the guitar also has a built-in gain boost designed by a music shop in Finland that Laiho works with. "It's a gain boost like Dave Mustaine and the guys in Anthrax had," Laiho explains. "They used to have that killer guitar tone. I sussed that out and wanted to have it."
As for the guitar's neck, Laiho says, "I like it kind of thick, but super flat. I don't really like some of the Jackson and Ibanez necks that I've played before, I prefer eth thickness of a Les Paul neck, for example."
On close inspection, the guitar's triangular "shark fin" fret markers turn out to have saw teeth, giving them an alarming resemblance to guillotine blades. "I remember that one of the Ibanez guitars- maybe it was the JEM- had one sawn edge in the fret markers," Laiho says. "But I figured, why just have one? So I told the guys at ESP maybe we could have sawed-off edges on the entire slanted surface. It was okay with them, and I think it looks cooler."
After the Alexi Laiho signature model had been doing well on the Japanese market for a few years, ESP U.S. decided that the time was right to introduce the guitar in the States. "IN 2005, Alexi won a Guitar World readers' poll," says Masciandaro. "We took that as an important sign. We have a pretty good grip on what's going on here in the States. WE watch the industry; we have contacts with the record labels. We had a good feel for what was going to happen with Alexi and his band, and now we're working very closely with him."
Next up will be a new color scheme for the guitar- a black body with a bold pink pinstripe. Alexi is pretty excited about it and was very specific about the shade of pink he wanted. "He picked out a Maybellene lip color called Fruit Punch #409," says Masciandaro. "We're also going to airbrush the band logo, COBHC, on the back of the body in that color, Right now we're working on matching inlay material, You can paint a guitar any color, but you're kind of limited as to what you can make inlays out of, They don't offer inlay material in any shade of pink you want."
"WE went through a bunch of shades and colors," Laiho adds. "I just wanted to have that Eighties, Miami Vice pink. OI think black and pink go really well together, I got the idea from Twisted Sister, They had a black and pink thing going on, WE were actually looking up colors on the internet, The guy who runs a guitar shop in Finland that I work with- his wife found a website that was all different shades of lipstick. We were just looking through, and I said, 'yeah, that's the one,' When you go for something that's pink, you better make sure it's cool."
Pickups may be the next frontier. "I met with Alexi at NAMM recently," says Masciandaro, "and for the first time since we've been working with him, he said he wants to try different pickups. He wants to do something different with the electronics. I suggested moving to an active EMG, That might be a good starting point."
In the end, Masciandaro says his goal is to accommodate Laiho as fully as he does any other artist with whom he deals. "If a guy can play like Alexi, you gotta respect anything he asks for, You can't go to a guy like that and say, 'I think you're being a little too picky here. Why does the neck shape matter that much?' With the kind of ability Alexi has, he's feeling things and he's got ears that most of us don't have."
Laiho, for his part, is happy with not only EMG's indulgence on his behalf but also the causal connection he has with Masciandaro and others at the company share, "So far, I have a good relationship with both the Japanese and American companies, The dude from the American company, we just hang out and we don't necessarily talk guitars, We can toss back a couple of drinks and talk bullshit, It's that kind of relationship; it's not all official, And I think that's the way it should be."
Certainly, one of Laiho and Masciandaro's most recent conversations had nothing to do with guitars.
"Alexi called the other day and said, 'You're not gonna believe what happened.' He went bowling," Masciandaro recounts. "He got a strike and was so happy, he jumped up in the air, When he landed, he slipped and injured his shoulder, Now he can't play guitar for the next month." Masciandaro's concern for the guitarist gives some sense of the kind of paternal worries that beset the chief of a company whose whole business plan is based around close artist relations.
"I remember when I first met Alexi, one of his arms was in a cast, How he's got issues with his right arm and shoulder, He's young and he's having a good time, I guess, He's the guitar god of the moment, Alexi has quite a future…as long as he quits breaking bones."

Ahh... Children of Bodom. Prob one of my favorite bands! Laiho is fantastic guitar player. I love his classical influence. Something Wild is by far my favorite, while Hatebreeder comes in 2nd. The new album didn't turn me on so much, few songs were cool, but overall no. I hope to see em live someday!
I agree, their older stuff was much more impressive but, I like their new stuff too. Not so much with "Are You Dead Yet?" But "Hate Crew Death Roll" always seemed like an album I could bang my head to. Anyway... I always liked the sort of classical atmosphere with a side of melodic thrash...And for those of you who have not heard of Sinergy (Although I doubt thats possible if you know anything about Alexi) Check this site out www.myspace.com/1sinergy They don't have an official myspace so I made one in hopes of connecting Sinergy fans and expanding on their fan base...So far its been a pretty decent success I'd have to say.

well, Alexi may have been suicidal or "emo" if u prefer, but it's not like he was cutting himself fer the sake of cutting himself. He actually had some bad shit going on in his life at the time. And also, he actually attempted a true suicide altogether by overdosing himself, not cutting...

I believe the term is "Post Thrash".
And as for why it's not allowed in the "Metal" forum, I'm pretty positive it's to avoid flamewars arising over whether or not they are "Metal" enough for the metal forum.
As for COB, I wonder what ever happened to those stolen Jacksons. Did he ever get them back?

speaking of "the nail"...
the quote that is in the beginning of that song "your eyes are filled with hate number 41, that is good, hate keeps a man alive"
i watched the movie it's from in my history class, it's called Ben Herr (i think, and i know i spelled the title wrong) it's about a gladiator dude.
Also the short reading in the beginning of Follow The Reaper comes from a poem called "Death Be Not Proud" by John Dunn, it's a pretty good poem too.
anyone know any of the sources for the other quotes they use in the beginning of songs?

Yeah, CoB is worth checking out. For genre, you're going to get either Melodic Death or Power Metal from people (their genre has been debated for ages), but they are not Black Metal. For songs: Bed of Razors, Bodom After Midnight, Children of Decadence, Northern Comfort, Silent Night, Bodom Night. and Red Light in my Eyes Part 1.

They are melodic death, but your religion shouldn't get in the way since they aren't really satanic at all.

they do have few songs that touch on the whole "satanic" thing, like Hate Me! for instance but believe me its not much at all.

I thought they were pretty Power-metally when I first heard them (Needled 24/7, Children of Decadence and the She Is Beautiful cover). I mean, I'm not someone who dives to deep into the world of subgenres, but I can see why you'd think they were power-metal. And I don't see why someone should take offence at that, it's just one more label among millions of others.

well it depends what you class as power metal
according to wiki (and in my own opinion the correct classification) power metal is
"Power metal leans toward the positive, happy side of life, seeking to empower the listener and inspire joy and courage. Power metal usually carries fantasy or science fiction themes."
thats somthign children of bodom (again in my opinion) is definatly not but each to their own

Yeah, you're probably right (although remember She Is Beautiful, a very happy song, was part of my initial exposure to CoB). But with the shredding and the keyboard solos, I can see how someone (like me) who honestly doesn't know or care where the boundaries between neo-thrash, blackened Viking and melo-death lie, could call them that.

Sorry, but CoB dosen't cut it for me. Alexi's tone is rather weak and dry with his keyboard, I guess I could say. Not to mention his riffs sound a tad uninspiring, concidering a few sound like direct ripoffs of Pantera, Carcass, and Manowar.

Well, a lot of it depends on the amp too. The guitar, the pickups, the playing, the volume.
A lot of things.
Basically, Alexi is good no doubt. He has a decent gain amp, his guitar is alder, a gain boost, and extreme playing volume.
I mean, you can hear his tone, it's like an ice pick. It picks up EVERY frequency almost, so if ANYTHING sounds wrong it amplifies it be 20 gajillion.
So like I said, it depends on a lot of things. Also, he really does have his mids up stupid high...like I said his actual "mids" are like at 3, but the mid shift is literally probably around 9-12 or 3-4 o'clock.
Shreddin 4 Life
05-28-2007, 02:37 PM
yeah that is true, I find it's "harder" to play with that much of a boost on mid frequencies but hey, as long as he does't do it in the studio as much it's all good I suppose
Shinozoku
05-28-2007, 02:57 PM
Lol! When my singer sat down behind the drums one day, he told me to play something. So I turned the mids on my amp all the way up and started playing Chokehold, but I couldn't handle the sound! I had to turn the volume down, and after that, it still irritated the **** outta me. My guitar is made of maple (laminate, ugh), so that made it even crazier to control feedback and stuff. I commend Alexi for being able to play as good as he does live without ****ing up, because it's frikkin hard not to!
He could still put his distaste for Dream Theater behind him and practice a couple more hours before going out on tour though, lol!
For those who aren't familiar, he said in a Guitar World interview that he didn't like the guys who are so super focused and don't **** up once live (like Dream Theater!). He believes that you SHOULD **** up live, because it shows you're really into it, rather than just standing there staring at your guitar (like Dream Theater, lol).

I actually like COB's guitar tone. I think th think is that Roopes amp is set up for lower mids because he does most of the rythm, and alexi's amp had a higher mid because he plays most of lead.
I think it works to be honest. Alexi's guitar sounds mindblowing on the second sixpounder solo

Silent Night, Bodom Night

I was extremely limited. I tried doing 10 songs, couldn't do it. It still killed me to even broaden it to 15.

Why...
So you can go through the trouble of adding them to mail/comment them saying how much they suck?
People steal peoples songs all the time, who cares???
Also, it's not like EXACTLY the same thing, it really COULD have been a fluke. The intro isn't really hard or that unique.

guys, listen to the song Tunnel Vision by John Petrucci and then listen to In Your Facew by Bodom. the main riff is almost exact
i thought it was pretty ironic

I thought Something Wild was his least favorite, due to the extreme Yngwie cloning?
As for my fave, definately HCDR. I recently got Hatebreeder in the mail, and I love it, too, but HCDR trumps it for me.
By the way, I'm ordering the Edwards RV on the 15th :D

I thought Something Wild was his least favorite, due to the extreme Yngwie cloning?
He did, but in an interview on Scythes-of-Bodom, he stated that his least favorite album is now Follow the Reaper. He also despises Kissing the Shadows because "the chorus is gay" and it "sounds like Rhapsody."

I thought Something Wild was his least favorite, due to the extreme Yngwie cloning?
Nah, he said he was proud of because he was only 17 at the time, and there are some songs on it that he enjoys. He says there are a few songs he likes on FTR but he still says it's his least favourite album. I forgot what he said was his favourite album, I think it was either Hate crew deathroll or are you dead yet.
And he not only doesn't like the needled 24 7 video, he doesn't like the are you dead yet video. He says there are too many closeups on him and not the rest of the band. And he didn't lik the story to the video either. His favourite vid is in your face.
