Hi all, I'm pretty unfamiliar with CoB, and I just wanted to know what would be a recommended album to start with?
Cheers.
The best place to start would be with "Something Wild" and then "Hatebreeder".

for those who have heard but havn't seen, or even if you havn't heard them here's a short set from tuska 2003. Alexi is so amazing! (note how he can destroy you with his vocals and play quite tech lead parts at the same time! :headbang: )

Alot of people seem to love alexi's voice but I think its agonizingly sucky =x then again I think that about bodom in general.
A great vocalist? Mikael Akerfeldt, that guy is godlike. If you've heard The Grand Conjuration you KNOW he can't be human.
That song is good and all, but I didn't like his growling on that song. The soft singing was awesome though.
Anyway, Who else is going to one of their coming headlining shows?
I have tickets for them at Pop's in Sauget, IL (basically St.Louis)

03-24-2006, 01:23 PM
i enjoyed are you dead yet, but i do believe it isn't their best effort. lots of songs did sound a bit pop-like in the chorus, but i found a lot of it to be great music, bands always need a change, i think they could've done something more interesting though. i want to see them get even more prog/melodic now instead of more thrash/death. if you base it off of the new album, would you consider them thrash now? thats all i ever hear is that cob is thrash now and no longer melo-death. i guess you could say they're thrash/death but idk. hatecrew was their best album imo
Stratwizard
03-24-2006, 03:03 PM
Arrr... COB is nowhere near melo-death anymore. Allthough, I have to say I kinda like the change. I mean, they can't compete with bands like Arch Enemy, Opeth, Cannibal Corpse in death metal.

I didn't see much of a difference either.

I went to their concert in New Haven on the 18th. It was SICK!! I do agree with one of the above posters (too lazy to go back and get the name). Their guitar tech really screwed up, the guitars were way off. It was still a sick show though. Apparently Alexi threw up on stage or something, heard he was recovering from the flu. Will post links to pics of concert when I get them.

16/07/2003 - So...unfortunately it is true that Alexander is no longer part of the Hatecrew, and we just wanted to make the point clear that there is absolutely no bad blood between us, what so ever. We really try not to make a big deal out of this, and since it`s not our place to talk about Alexander`s personal affairs, we have to be brief about this. Alexander realized he couldn`t take this constant touring life anymore and felt that he was holding us back by not enjoy doing this anymore and that it was better for him to bail out than not giving the whole 100% and making himself unhappy. His exact words to me were ?It`s not fair to me, to you, or to our fans to pull an act in front of you all and just do it for money? We understand that some of you might feel that it`s not COB without him, and it is true that he was a huge part of us just like every other member, but we hope that YOU understand that this has not been easy for us, but, god damn, we will carry on with a new guy(which we`ll let you know about later),cuz after all, the fact is: CHILREN OF BODOM AIN`T READY TO ****ING DIE YET!

technical skill it'd be roope, but just the musical composition i'd have to say alexander. they'd be doing harmonies, counterpoints, and dual leads and now its like turned from that highly melodic standpoint to thrashier death metal and alexi is hoggin the solos when he's got a really good guitarist playing rhythm, they should at least do some dual leads or some ****.

COB cover of Britney Spears is f?cking hilarious!!! I can't get over how damn funny it is... However, there are those out there who clearly haven't listened to the whole song... They are the guys who say, "I used to like COB, but I can't respect them after this..." or "COB is so *** now that they did this!!! **** them!!!"
Because those guys liked them in the first place... *ahem,* I think that's called being a POSER!!!
Anyways, back to subject: COB is coming to San Diego on June 6th... Worth going? Are their live shows really that great? Cuz I love the album stuff... If they can capture the energy live too, then hell, I"m there...

whtas the difference between passive and active pickups? and how do i do tap harmonics???
Stratwizard

Active pickups have more output than passive ones. Tone-wise I prefer passives over actives anyday.
Tapping harmonics... Lets say you fret a note on 5th fret, then you tap it 12 frets above on the 17th fret.

I have a questions regarding the Unholy Alliance tour!
The first show is coming to my area on the opening day I believe (6/6/6 baby) and I was deciding whether or not to go depending on the quality of CoBs set.
How long do you guys think they will play, considering slayer is the main act and there are 2 other bands? I won't go if they play for like 30 mins and half the songs are off the latest 2 albums which IMO suck pretty hard, especially AYDY.

they are my favourite band. i like the keyboard parts, i think it gives them something not many other bands have. definately one of the best metakl bands around now.
and apparently on the britney spears cover, when it gets to the part in the middle where he just starts talking in finish, everyone just thinks hes saying whatever the hell it says in the actual song, where really hes asking his manager "when can we get this stupid song over with so i can go drink some beers"

Im going to Unholy Alliance too, and because it starts at 2, most likely ends at 11-12, and 5 bands there, it will most likely be at least an hour long set for each band Im guessing.

'Are You Dead Yet?' seems to have a strong industrial feel to it, with synth layered over the guitars. It seems to be less creative than their previous albums. Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder were much better albums (their best imo), and Alexi Laiho is pretty overrated.
Also I don't mind the keyboards, even if Janne Warman is a bit of a wank, he's a virtuoso on keys.
All in all CoB has great melodies, harmonies, and riffs, but the lyrics tend to suck hard, and Alexi's thrashish/black/death vocals get irritating after awhile.
Alexi Laiho is not ****ing overated, sorry im spazzing but hes the best guitarist ever. Just because hes metal people are like ohhh he has no tone and that **** but who gives a **** metal doesnt need tone, it needs pure balls and requires amazing skill

as much of a fan of Alexi as i am i have to agree that that statement was pretty ****ing ignorant none can really say who the best guitarist is because there are many diff styles, alexi is a very goo METAL guitarist while esteban is a very good flamenco guitarist tha doesnt make him any better or worse than alexi . and just because he plays metal doesnt mean that he doesnt have to care about his tone. i was reading a copy of guitar world and kirk hammet said that he spent almost a week finding a tone he liked for "Master Of Puppets" so i dont know what the **** that guy thinks he can say that for..............

So that article was pretty nice... A good long article devoted to a great player and his band. Kinda good to see that.
About the EMG Hz's: I've played the Zakk Wylde Epi Les Paul, and personally, I loved those fücking pickups. I really liked the tone, the ease with which I got harmonics, and the general use I got from them. Oh, and I know this makes it worse, but I played it thru an MG... I know, they suck: I plugged in a Jackson Soloist next and it sounded horrible...
Either way, my point is that those p-ups really aren't that bad. It just depends on the guitar and amp settings. I'd love to get the same kind of set up Alexi's got - V with Hz's and a gain booster (think that's like the EMG Afterburner?), but of course I'm a poor college student and all... Donations are accepted graciously...

I didnt think he was overrated as a guitarist.
The only bad things i could say about him is that his lyrics suck, and his vocals on the new album are slowly decending into nu metal. ughhhhhhhh *shudders*
What happened to the neo classical stuff??
Something Wild, Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper = deafinitely best albums by far. love nearly every song on each of them.
I didnt mind Hatecrew Deathroll but lame song titles and lyrics brought it down. And what was with the whole style of the album? Real weird up beat happy tunes. I mean Children of Bodom have their signature happy melody but that album took it too far.

question:
You know how Alexi has his signature "scream" (awww yeah yowl or something similar to that) that he does in nearly every song well do you think he got it from James Hetfield? Because on Four Horsemen off Kill Em All album James Hetfield does a "yeah yowl" which reminds me of Alexi everytime. Do any one here agree with me on this?...

I've reading a lot of people saying the keyboard should be gone...the best part of CoB besides Alexi's guitar is Janne's keyboard. It adds so much to the music. Keyboards are awesome in metal and that is why they are known as melodic death metal.
I also saw them in concert in December with Trivium and Amon Amarth and let me tell you it was such a good concert. CoB is my favorite band of all time!

My first CoB song i learned was Bodom Beach Terror.
And Alexi's probably the main focus in the band, and its a shame, Roope is just as good in his own sence.

I'm seeing them this summer and from what people have been saying, they should put on an awesome show, anyone else here seeing them on The Unholy Alliance Tour? I'm hoping to hear them do: You're better Off Dead, In Your Face, Trashed Lost and Strungout, and Mask Of Sanity (those arent all my favourite songs but they seem like good live songs)

The first CoB song I ever learned was Needled 24/7. I know it's pretty easy as far as CoB songs go but I still love playing it.

Ok guys, I was told to post this here...
I just wondered what you thought or knew.
I was thinking of this based mainly on:
-Slayer are confirmed for Reading festival already and they are touring with them prior to it.
-Children Of Bodom are touring European festivals in August and seem to be free at that time.
-Mean fiddler are still confirming acts for Sunday which is the metal day.
Stranger things have happened and being a metal head I pray they are there for a heavier line up is definitely needed this year...
Anyone know anything that adds to this or completely crushes it?

Sorry to change the subject but my band and I were looking into playing a couple of CoB songs live but we lack keyboards and don't plan on getting any, so my question is what are some good songs in which the keyboard parts are small and unimportant or better yet nonexistant.

hey, i was just learning this as my first CoB song, and i got a question or two, probably very stupid ones.
Why is it in every video i see of kids playing it, they bring their fretting hand around the neck to fret the second chord in the verse riff when its up on the high e/B? Is it just because its the way Alexi does it, or is there something im missing here?
And is it sweep picking in the second verse? (i've never done sweep picking, so if it is, i guess i'll have to start to learn)
thanks :)

^ I'm pretty sure it's just for showmanship.. It's pretty pointless IMO.
And yeah, it's sweep picking. Haven't tried it yet though.

hey this is my first post on dis thread and all i got to say is that i like em a lot. Bodom beach terror is great, and my bands drummer is rly good at the double pedal used in it. Another few good songs are 6 pounder and their cover of oops i did it again(lol). They are nice and the synth player rules. And alexi well he is like better than malmsteem and he is one of the best guitarists of our generation. I play bass and i find their bass player to be quite acerage but still...they are a good band

I like how Alexi does the yelling "C'mon!" "HUUUUUURGH" or like in the britneyspears thing, how he gets very enthusiastic in yelling "yeah yeah yeah YEAH YEAH YEAH".
It's the mix of the Mustaine/Hetfield singing style that I wanted to do for so long, and him doing it is a perfect realization of it. Granted I'd do the normal vocals in a Hetfield/Mustaine manner, the 'C'mons" and "YEARGGHH" are perfect the way they are.

Hetfield is hilarious live, every song starts, ends and probably consists of... "OOOHOOO YEA!!!!" and "UGHHH!!!!!!!" Tis rocktastic though.

I think CoB Rock because oif Alexi's style and speed on his stuff, also his influence bieng a big Steve Vai fan, his favorite song is said to be Steve Vai's "For The Love Of God"

Lol, Bodom seems to have a lot of different classifacations. So far ive heard:
Death Metal
Thrash Metal
Melodic Death Metal
Melodic Thrash Metal
Black Metal
Melodic Black Metal
Melodic Power Metal with Harsh Vocals
Power Metal
Thrash Metal with Harsh Vocals
and the one i think they actually are is
Melodic Thrash Metal with Harsh Vocals.

I think they're Melodic Death Metal, I think the vocals make it more Death, but I don't know about the keyboards, they kind of point more to Black.
The order of albums from the ones I liked the most to the wins I disliked the most:
Follow The Reaper
Hatecrew Deathroll
Are You Dead Yet?
Hatebreeder
Something Wild
But that's just me...
Oops I Did It Again is... weird...

I call em Melodic Death metal.
Melody from they keyboards and the leads.
Death from the vocals.
But the drums resemble a thrash style mixed with death, which I enjoy very much.

I saw them last night at the Unholy Alliance tour.. ****ing incredible, but I have a question. Before Children of Bodom took the stage, they played a sample over the PA that sounded like a child's nursery rhyme, about a guy going crazy, or "madder" as it was put in the song, because of some girl I think, I don't really remember, but I know the little rhyme starts to speed up and his voice gets high pitched with it. It was either before CoB or Mastodon. Does anyone know where I could download this, or if it's a song or something, it sounded pretty cool.
