I think they're Melodic Death Metal, I think the vocals make it more Death, but I don't know about the keyboards, they kind of point more to Black.

No no NO! Black metal does NOT have keyboards used like that!

I saw them at the House of Blues a couple of hours ago, they were opening for Lamb of God (who I didn't bother to see). They put on a pretty good show, I thought it was entertaining when Alexi started playing the keyboard with the keyboardist.

I apologize... I don't know what I was thinking...
You know me and my Black Metal lovingness, that was clearly a mistake...
COB have more "DEN DEN DEN DEN DEN DE-DE-DEN!" keyboards... whereas Black Metal can sample an orchestrial piece. But also, Black Metal is mainly focused on religion, and uses more musical styles to represent that.

Please don't yell at me again... I love you...

i told you all already what they are. melo-thrash. dare you jest?
I CHALLENGE THY WITH A JEST! They are Melodic Death, because the vocals point more towards Death Metal than to Thrash Metal.

Yea, I did, they were amazing. Their set was short, but the songs they played, they did the hell outta them. I know they played In your Face and Are you Dead Yet? Which aren't my favorites, but they played Angels don't Kill, Downfall, Needled 24/7, and a couple others. Great show. It was their newer guitarists birthday so Randy (lamb of god) had everyone wish him a happy birthday in his own way.

Well, I've only heard 3 songs by them.
-Silent Night, Bodom Night
-Needling 24/7
-and some other song that my dad had recorded on a tape from a couple years ago.

I liked all three songs, and was wondering what albums/songs are recommended to listen to.

After this, the band headed back to the United States and Canada for a main support tour with Children of Bodom and Amon Amarth. Man, I had no idea that there were THIS many COB fans out there.
I gotta say that Bodom is one of the greatest bands to ever grace the metal world. I honestly love everything that they've done so far-even the new album. But my favourite has to be "Follow The Reaper" so far, as well well the 2 albums that came before it...
Just the same though, I know what most of you mean when you say that, "oh the new Bodom stuff sucks" But for me, it's not that they suck now, they're just different. If you think about, they simply dropped some of the neo-classical elements for a heavier sound, and for metal, that's always a good thing...
But anyways, Bodom forever!!!

CoB r one of the best bands and the guy that said "they simply dropped some of the neo-classical elements for a heavier sound, and for metal, that's always a good thing..." is an idiot that is not the case, as its been said above those neo-classical classical element are wot made them 1 of the best, personally i dont lik " are you dead yet" because they changed their style but there are a few ok songs on the album like we're not gonna fall and such. I think they changed because of the introduction of guitarist roope who was lead guitarist along with alexi in sinergy. i think roopes style made an influnence in the albums outcome. I think cob can still produce another fantastic album maybe not as good as hatebreeder but fukin class anyways. Alexi is still a god to me on guitar and him being soooo young i know he can produce something magical again.

Idk, I love some of the solos on there more than anyother before, like when he was younger, and less experienced.... I think IMO- IMO!!!- that some songs began to sound way too much the same for me, but now he's exploring a lil' into what I like to refer to as badass ****ing **** bitch!!!
Plus, idk, I really like how he has dropped his seemingly artificial death metal voice, and gone for his more I guess natural voice, idk how to describe it really I just like it better.

... PS- no flaming on the others- just saying

Bodom kicks ass. I saw them live with slayer, lamb of god and mastodon. They were pretty good but I would've taken out Living Dead Beat and Angels Don't Kill from their set and replaced them with Bed of Razors and Lake Bodom. My favorite album is definetly hatebreeder, then follow the reaper, something wild, hate crew deathroll, and finally are you dead yet, which is definetly their worst album. Its got a few good songs: are you dead yet, if you want peace prepare for war, and trashed lost and strungout but the rest of it is ****. My favorite bodom songs are Bed of Razors, Lake Bodom, and children of decadence. hopefully bodoms next album will sound more like hatebreeder and less like bull****.

Shreddin 4 Life

Well come on,

If u guys all seriously think that COB could ride the neo-classical elements of their songs forever, than ur all ****ing stupid. The only part of the music that ever sounded neo-classical were the riffs that were taken out of the Baroque era of classical music (as in directly from Bach & Vivaldi). As in "Red Light In My Eyes (parts 1 & 2), "Black Widow" and "Downfall" respectively. That's why this was said:

Of course they are, Yngwie wrote them.

Besides, Alexi Laiho said it himself in an interview that I read a while back that they (Children Of Bodom) knew they couldn't ride the neo-classical stuff forever. In fact, to keep it fresh, they did pretty much all u can do in terms of a neo-classical sound and riffage...

Furthemore, I never meant that the new Bodom sound is better when I said "dropping the neo-classical is a good thing"...
oh yeah,
By the way, I never said it was a good thing! What I WAS saying is that at least they're still ****in' heavy, and didn't start playing Linkin Park-style or something...
Just the same, their solos are still kick-ass, so there's no selling out completely. I just mean that in terms of music on its own, it's still great, but obviously when compared to vintage Bodom, it'll never come close...

On a lighter note, my favourite album by them (as I mentioned b4) is "Follow The Reaper", and as far as I'm concerned, "Something Wild", "Hatebreeder" & "Follow The Reaper" are some of the best albums of any genre of music to ever be released!!!

CoB's neo-classical riffs weren't all stolen from actual composers...obviously they're influenced by them but there's a difference. For example the end of Towards Dead End. That's no ripoff.I really don't like their new style but at least I have 3 albums of some of the best **** ever. Hatebreeder ftw.

Shreddin 4 Life
07-12-2006, 04:09 PM
Yes, I do acknowledge the fact that not ALL of the neo-classical stuff that Bodom's done is taken from composers.

However, u can't deny that the songs I mentioned are taken directly from pieces such as Bach's "Two-Part Invention No.13" (Red Light In My Eyes part 1) or Mozart's "Symphony No.25" (Red Light... part 2).
I never said so to complain, I was just sayin' is all.
COB Arranging that stuff for electric guitar in a time where soloing or playing guitar really well was practically frowned upon is comendable enough. And above all, it sounds amazing the way they did it.

And I'm not trying to 'piss you off'. I'm just pointing out that writing 'COB 4EVR' after every post does not make you look any cooler.

OK, if u say so...

Anyways, back to the purpose of this forum:Bodom.

I was wondering, which album, or preferably, which SONG do u guys think is the best work that Bodom's put out so far?

Mine would have to be a close running between "Follow The Reaper" & "Hatebreeder"
My favourite tune's "Kissing The Shadows"

-Alek-

But I'm not a big fan, and therefore can't say if it's the best they've put out.

kissing the shadows is their best song, and everytime i die is really good too, howevr i hav yet to hear something from them i don like, and i've heard a lot, if not everything they've done, truly an incredible band that should be more respected. btw google vid, children of bodom, watch the 50 minute concert in seoul korea, has all their best songs in my opinion, (including kissing the shadows and everytime i die) k

I have no idea where else to put this but it has to do with Alexi Laiho so...

I was looking on eBay and stumbled upon an Alexi Laiho Young Guitar Istructional DVD and im thinking about getting it. But does anybody know if its good? It sais Alexi talks about Picking, Legato Technique, Sweep Arpeggios, Accuracy, and How he comes up with solos. So, has anybody owned or seen the dvd and is it worth 24.99 (plus shipping)?

Thanks.

Well, judging by the instructional on "soloing" on on demand he doesn't seem like a great teacher. That could be mostly just cause he speaks poor english though...lmao he says "you know" like every 2 seconds you know? I would probably get it personally though, since it's his own instructional and probably not some sit-down with some dude askin him dumb questions. If you really like Alexi a lot I'd say go for it. I'd like to see what goes on in his head.

The Instructional DVD? Im thinking of either getting this or John Petrucci's Rock Discipline. I know Petrucci's will deffinately help me but i actually like Alexi's playing a bit more. Mainly the only thing im doing to practice technique is learning hard solos from my favorite bands so right now im thinking one of the DVDs will help me out.

One thing that seems helpful about his lessons (like most pro guitar lessons) is the speed difference: he does it fast, and then at a speed that still keeps it interesting (unlike Rusty Cooley).
Another thing is the angles. I've seen some of above referred videos on youtube & it seems worth your while. Go fer it!

However, I'd suggest "Bed Of Razors" fer one, it's not that difficult at all.
Also, u might wanna try "Lil' Bloodred Ridin' Hood". It's got some excellent melody lines that will definitely help u get into more complicated playing such as string skipping!

I like them alot. Alexi Liaho is a great guitarist and will soon prove to be one of the best of this generation. The only problem I have is there keyboardists, keyboards arent metal im sorry. Especially since he turns it down so hes playing it like a guitar and headbanging, its just dumb. There awesome though.

At least Warman doesn't play a keytar like a lot of power metal keyboard players (just for the record I'm not categorizing Bodom as power metal, because they aren't, I'm just pointing out that some keyboard players in power metal play keytars)

and whats wrong with a keytar? Its the same a keyboards haha. And COB is very power metal. Sure they have a few riffs that are influenced by a diff. genre, but they are basically power metal with harsh vocals. Anyways I don't think they are ever gonna release anything quality again. I liked everything to Hatecrew alot. But Are You Dead yet is just lame aside from a few cool parts here and there.

rianne-the song they are playing is called passage to the reaper, it is a sinergy song, a side-project that alexi was in with roope before roope joined cob(i think). It is a version of a song by vivaldi or some other classical composer. You can get tabs for it on this site under sinergy or bodom im not sure but check out some of sinergys other songs, you probaly wont be able to find one of their albums because they have split up but you can try and download some.

liesofautumn-personally i like the old stuff better- hatebreeder, something wild but hatebreeder imo being the best. After that i would go for hatecrew deathroll but beware of Are you dead yet? not many songs on it sound like bodom used to in follow the reaper period but its your choice.

Rakoro

the vivaldi song is the last movement of Summer, which is part of The Four Seasons.

If you like it you should definately check out the other parts of The four seasons, which are, spring, summer, fall, and (omg no wai!) winter. The particularly metal ones are summer and winter.

Yea man, Children of Bodom use a lot of metaphors in their songs. And there is nothing I hate more than an ignorant person who can't comprehend a song, so he labels it as crap. Well! That is crap! Kissing the Shadows is actually about Alexi (or whoever) being too shy to communicate with a person he's attracted to (I think). And Dave Mustaine has a lot of meaning in his lyrics too. Kissing the Shadows is actually about Alexi (or whoever) being too shy to communicate with a person he's attracted to (I think).

So what are u guy's opinions on Alexi only using a bridge pickup. He says that he doesn't like the sound of neck pups so he doesn't play with one.

Shreddin 4 Life
09-08-2006, 01:14 PM
well, it's a matter of taste really...

I personally don't use a neck pickup much, so having a guitar like his would be a good thing.
For others, they can't use anything other than a neck pickup, so they stick with what works fer them...

anyone got any similar EQ amp settings that Alexi uses? I just cant get the right tone, i was givin ones and they sound alright but not perfect and theyre clearly not the ones alexi uses as he said in an interview that he plays with mostly the mids boosted so that the guitar stands out over the drums and keyboard and bass, but the settings i have say the mids are like 3, so if you got better settings post them please?

Use allot of mid, then push the treble enough to let it cut tough enough and then work the bass up to your liking.

And use the r-rief channel.

Hey guys, this is probably stupid, but are there any relatively easy CoB songs? I've looked at a few tabs, but every time one of Alexi's sweet-as-**** solos comes up and I break down in despair.

Are there any (ideally off the AYDY album, I only have a handful of other tracks) that don't have a solo, or have a relatively manageable one? I mean, I love listening to Alexi and Roop play so much, I just want to find something where I can play their stuff without having to stop at some point and go "okay, there's a kickass solo here, but I can't do it"

Cheers much, Hatecrew types ^_^

all have solos but there are achievable one, im guessing you arent an unbelievable soloist so u'll want th easier ones, in order of the songs i have i would say, Are You Dead Yet? the solo seems pretty manageable only one quick run in it but you could alwasy improvise a little run to go in its place. The Every Time I Die, if you can manage the tiny 3 string sweeps at the start you can handle the solo i'd say, then Silent Night Bodom night, its a manageable solo, then if you can do the sweeps at the start of this solo (im having a bitof trouble) you can handle the rest, so givem a try

TheUnholy
09-10-2006, 07:43 PM
Cheers much ^_^. I'll give AYDY a good play tomorrow, as sweeps aren't something I'm confident with yet (though I suspect I could cope with 3-string stuff if it's not lightning quick). Plus, AYDY has a kickass main riff.

If you have Hatebreeder then "Bed of Razors" could be pretty simple as long as you don't play the keyboard solo...Alexi's solo isn't very flashy so it should be pretty simple...the only tough parts could be the riff right before the first verse and the sweep-picking riff that the guitar and keyboard do in unison right before the solo

As for AYDY, "Punch Me, I Bleed" should be pretty simple except for the end of the solo...give it a try if you can

just got into this band, must say i absolutely hate screaming vocals, one of the reasons why i never got into trivium, or those other metalcore bands, but this stuff rocks, eventually you just learn to drown the vocals out and it just becomes a very angry distorted instrument.

Comparing it to other bands, i find em real upbeat and really get me enthusiastic about listening to their music, however they don't really have an ability pump out classics like metallica do. I think kirk hammets solo's are much worse than alexi's cause they never tie in with the song, it's like james tells him "solo time" and <insertsolohere> gets some lightening fast pentatonics, these laiho solo's kinda fit in with the songs, or rather are kind of so much apart of the songs that they wouldn't make sense without em.

Not as insane as some Necrophagist or Nile riffs. How those two singers manage to play that stuff and sing is beyond me. Simply amazing.

Really? I don't find that riff too confusing. Hell, I can actually sing Kissing the Shadows and play those riffs at the same time, but I can't sing like Alexi so there isn't much point. :p: I find Battery harder to sing and play at the same time than MoP actually.

Yeah, all the covers I've heard by them were horrible, which included Aces High too. I'm not completely sure if either of those are ACTUALLY them though. They sounded it, but I've seen other covers mislabeled as being from CoB. Either way they sucked. That double-bass in the intro verse of the Trooper sounds so stupid, ahaha.

CoB is an awesome, but complex, band. First off, all of their albums own my soul. Second, all of their albums are different. If a band kept putting out the same old s*** and didn't change (I'm not talking about selling out) a little bit, it would be gay. Alexi Laiho is a great guitarist, he's not the best but he's not over rated either. Their new album isn't as good as their older stuff but for a funny reason. Alexi broke his wrist while he was drunk and dancing on the roof of a car and fell off. They own live. I saw them in Reno Nevad in July with Lamb of God and they rocked. Each member of the band owns.

IMO their albums rank as follows

Follow the Reaper
Hatebreeder
Hate Crew DeathRoll
Something Wild
Are You Dead Yet

But AYDY still owns.

Bottom Line CoB owns and anyone who says different is just cynical.

I Don't Give A F*** If You HATE ME!!!!! :headbang:

I like how in that first sentence you use complex as if it's a diss "they're good, but complex," like complexity subtracts from awesomeness.
