'Kay guys, I asked this question once before, I think, but have no idea where the answer went, so I'll ask again :P

I need an excerpt of a Bodom song for my music dissertation at school. I need a song that:
A) Has a PowerTab available (I need to be able to provide it in musical notation, not just tab)
B) Has a section (IE a solo or part of a solo) that displays:
--- Alexi's NeoClassical influences
--- Alexi's Malmsteen influence (kinda the same, I know)
--- preferably involves both sweeping and tapping.

Cheers :)

Magero
03-15-2008, 01:04 PM
Don't think Alexi's done much sweeping, but basically go to any song off of the first album. Considering most of the song's are based on classical pieces.
So yea, anything off of "Something Wild"

Magero

Easily being a relitive term obviously.

Thanks guys :)

Please continue to fight among yourselves for which solo meets my requirements best, but I'll follow up all the ones mentioned so far and see if they fit my essay.

EDIT: Of the individual song suggestions so far, Sixpounder is the best. I'm away to trawl through the Something Wild songs - seeing as my dissertation is on "Neoclassical Shred Guitar", I guess I better kinda focus on that aspect. :p: . Don't suppose any of the SW solos have sweeping, or at least tapping?

EDIT EDIT: "Deadnight Warrior" looks good, nice spot of sweeping...... but I shall search on.

SUPER MEGA UBER EDIT: Sorted :). The outro to "The Nail" should do me nicely. Shame there's no tapping, but life is cruel

Could anyone suggestion some of the easier Bodom songs?....I only have Follow the Reaper and a few song I downloaded and from them I've selected We're Not Gunna Fall, Taste of My Scythe, Children of Decadence, Kissing the Shadows and Downfall minus the solos for all of them I think. (I Might be able to pull off one but I can't sweep) So are there any with relatively easy rhythm parts and preferably an easy solo that I could get a Guitar Pro file for?....

Bed of Razors is really fun to play. Silent night bodom night, Mask of sanity, Bodom Beach terror.

Alexi doesn't really ever tap. One of the few instances I can think of is very briefly in the Needled 24/7 solo, but that's one hand tapping.

I'm not really feeling any of these songs.....Bodom Beach Terror was kind of speaking to me but the solo sounds a bit too hard.....I was hoping to improve my technical skill by learning one of their songs but I'm not very good for how long I've been playing. (almost 3 years)

The first album, Something Wild, definitely has neo-classical influence. The song Red Light In My Eyes (Part 2) even starts with Mozart's symphony No. 25 and has a refrain using a portion of his requiem.

Yea I even remember in an interview or something Alexi said he was basically trying to replicate Malmsteen...making his solos very very neoclassical...

if you have guitar pro, then get any song you want, just slow the tempo down. for example, when i was learning kissing the shadows, i slowed it down from 140 to 110, just to get the patterns right. then i started upping it by 5 or 10 bpm to get the speed right. you'd be surprised how fast you can pick it up...i thought i could only play about 6 or 7 nps, and by the end of the day i was playing 10.

it's worth a try anyway :p:

other than that, punch me i bleed seems pretty easy.

I'm in good shape, but I'm only 5'11 and about 140 lbs.

I hate to admit it, but I'm a little anxious about how nuts it's going to be on the floor. Especially during Rimjob for a Cowboy, and the majority of obnoxious assholes who listen to them and enjoy it. No offense to anyone who does, and is actually intelligent and has good taste.

CoB is by far my favorite band. I've listened to every track they've released, including the new album and all of their covers. I'm starting to get disappointed with their writing now. It's just not as melodic as it used to be. listen to Lake Bodom or Silent Night, Bodom Night and then listen to Banned From Heaven. you might see what I mean. but I guess every band's sound slightly changes over time. and I'm going to my 3rd Bodom show in may at DTE.

Trufax.

I'm 17 years old, 6'1 ish, about 11 and a half stone... so by no means massive (and I see plenty guys smaller and lighter than me in pits doing fine). And I've been in a Lamb of God Wall Of Death, Circle Pits for Chimaira, All That Remains etc, seen Slayer, seen Machine Head twice, seen Arch Enemy, seen KoRn with Joey Jordinson on drums...(btw, ATR, Arch Enemy and one MH were in Glasgow, and the rest at Download) and sure you pick up the odd knock, but pits aren't dangerous. Worst that's happened is I broke my nose during Ill Nino, but that was a fluke. Maybe Madball or some other old school hardcore acts are a bit nastier, but generally metal pits are fine.

Plus, except for right at the front, it's not like the whole floor pits. It's your choice whether to go into the actual pit or not. When I went to the Black Crusade in Glasgow, one of my friends who went was a really small girl who'd never been to a metal gig before. We had to keep an eye on her, but she was absolutely fine.

There's always complete camaraderie - anyone who goes down is picked up immediately, and anyone who's being a dick gets sorted out. So don't worry about pits. Get yourself on the floor, it's WAY more fun than sitting on a seat somewhere. It's your choice whether to mosh or not, and either way you get to be much more a part of the show and the crowd than if you were seated.

Get down the front!

I may be the only one in saying I preferred AYDY. I love thrash metal too but when I listen to a new Bodom album I expected like Follow The Reaper or Hate Crew Deathroll. It just didn't seem very bodom-esque to me.

Its not a bad CD, it was just a let down for me as I was hoping for something more melodic like their older music.

Well, if you're more into thrash and alternative, it depends

Something Wild is pretty neo-classical

Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper are more almost power-metal in approach.

Hate Crew Deathroll is a good one, and a personal favorite of mine. You might also like Are You Dead Yet. They're closer to straight forward heavy metal.

Blooddrunk, their new cd, is also pretty thrashy in some parts, and a mix of all their different sounds.

I would say Hate Crew Deathroll. Its an excellent album and easy to get into. After that check out their older stuff hatebreeder and follow the reaper. I would leave something wild and are you dead yet for last as imo they are the worst albums by COB. As for blooddrunk, havent heard it enough times yet to pass judgement.

Blooddrunk isn't metalcore at all...it certainly takes the band in a new direction, that being more thrashy/heavy and less cheesy melodic harmonies. The first few songs I heard from it (the original mix of TMR and One Day You Will Cry) made me a bit skeptical but after listening to the full album many times I can confidently say that its the best thing they've put out since FTR. Hellhounds, Blooddrunk, LoBodomy, the new mix of Tie My Rope and Roadkill are reeeeeally solid tracks.

Gordita Supreme
03-22-2008, 04:18 PM
I'm pretty underwhelmed at this point by Blooddrunk. A lot of the songs sound very similar to other stuff / each other. I always have that problem with COB though, maybe after I listen to the songs more I will start to find the better stuff.

To the statement that COB is becoming metalcore, thats retarded. Wrong.

yoozum
03-22-2008, 05:29 PM
Yeah, the album is definitely solid. Not a huge fan of Lobodomy, TMR, and Done with Everything, Die for Nothing, but the rest of the tracks are pretty good. My favorites would probably have to be BD, Roadkill Morning, and Smile Pretty for the Devil (awesome keyboard/guitar solos). I was a little puzzled as to why Hellhounds was chosen to be the next single, because I don't think it's as strong as some of the other tracks (i.e. Roadkill)

I have to give props to COB for not compromising on their sound as they get more and more popular. I'm sure many expected the album to be in the vein of AYDY, but this is a very solid and heavy album. I can't wait to get my super Bodom package with the cd/dvd, shirt, and the 2 dvds.

Oh and it seems like people are confusing 'metalcore' with 'new wave of american heavy metal' (FYI, the UK did the new wave of metal 3 decades ago :p: ). I kinda know what yea mean with bodom gaining hints of NWOAHM with the complex low tuned fast paced wierd timing riffs. But it is still certainly Melodic Death metal. It's just that on the earlier albums they were more Neo-classical melodic death power metal.

Who cares though? These multy genres can be handy but they get misunderstood and can cause fanboys. Metal is metal, you like some, you dislike others

pistols
03-23-2008, 04:42 AM
^to me the NWOAHM is pretty much the new wave of the same heavy metal...look at the 2 most popular bands that a lot of people define as that. lamb of god and killswitch. LoG are pretty much testament meets slayer meets metalcore vocalist. killswitch are pretty much gothenburg metal.

anyways, apart from me being a genre nazi about that, bodom are just progressing. heaps of people i know constantly give bands like slayer **** for playing the same song for god knows how many years, so that's what they should be doing. the most interesting bands have always been the ones that progressed...death, carcass, etc.

Magero
03-23-2008, 04:47 AM
^NWOAHM is just a revival.
NWOBHM was just all the old 70's metal being played by new bands.
NWOAHM is just all the 90's metal being played by new bands. Hence why I hate that some "metalcore" gets relegated to the hardcore forum. Heaven Shall Burn, Lamb Of God, Unearth, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, etc. It's all heavier and more metal like than friggin' half the stuff in here, but it's "core" cause Metal Hammer likes it.
/end rant.

Delanoir

Wow, that's completely narrow-minded. The day a band thinks that way about their music is the day they should call it quits. Change and evolution is necessary.

I completely agree with Magero, pistols, Peace, and the rest. Just because it's not the same kind of metal you like, doesn't automatically mean that it sucks. To be perfectly honest, I'm with Magero in that a lot of the bands relegated to "metalcore" are far better than most bands grandfathered into "true" metal because of the established styles that they chose to adhere.

I'm glad Bodom are experimenting. And to be perfectly honest, compared to a lot of bands, they do it a lot more conservatively.

Does anyone actually care anymore? I see that genre names are useful if you need to define a band's sound, but goddamn ...I love Metallica, I love Disturbed, I love Chimaira, I love Bodom, I love Within Temptation, Lamb of God, Throwdown, Godsmack, Black Sabbath, Cradle of Filth, Trivium, Stone Sour, Dragonforce, All That Remains...

Now if you were to gather together all the genres that bands in that list have been described as, you'd have a massive list of imperceptibly different subgenres. And there'll be plenty other bands within those genres whom I don't care for much. It happens that "heavy metal" as a genre appeals to me a great deal, but within that overall genre I judge a band on its individual merits. Nearly every band worth listening to fuses genres together to some extent anyway.

And as for changing their sound, I'm reminded of a comment Hetfield made about being asked when Metallic would make another Kill 'Em All. He said something along the lines of "sure, I like that record too. But we didn't need to make it again, because it's still there". Better a band makes an original album at the risk of alienating some than it clones itself into perpetuity.

They didn't go further. Change doesn't always mean progression and they definitely took three steps backwards. The same style can get boring, but it takes a talented band to find new ground in the same style and pump out another good album of same style. Yes, it does also take talent to experiment, change a little bit, and pump out good stuff, but CoB pumped out watered down wimpy music instead of something solid. Theres nothing wrong with change, when you change and do something great (Bathory) you end up being a great band, but when you change and put out filth (Cryptopsy!) then you compromised your sound like CoB did.

I think that's a great quote from James Hetfield, personally. And goes to show one of the several things that separates a band like Metallica from a band such as, for instance, Slayer... who basically never change. To me, what they make is great and all, but they've never progressed or done anything new since the day they started.

And I had a dream about Bodom, before. Basically, all I remember is that I was hanging out with Alexi, Janne, and Roope, and I was extremely more skilled at guitar than I actually am. So it was a double blow of disappointment when I woke up and realized that I also had not just spent an awesome day of playing music with them :(

Theres nothing wrong with change, when you change and do something great (Bathory) you end up being a great band, but when you change and put out filth (Cryptopsy!) then you compromised your sound like CoB did.
You can't please everybody. Whenever there is change, some people will like it and others won't.

Yeah, also, let's face it, with the accessibilty of media nowadays there's a ludicrous amount of bands around. If a band takes a risky approach, they might come up with something awesome, and if they don't as far as you're concerned, some other band will. Much better that way than bands playing within their comfort zone and becoming caricatures of themselves.

To me, CoB's style change worked. Maybe not ZOMG THEY'RE 1000% BETTER THAN EVER worked, but it resulted in some great songs (my favourite being In Your Face as far as AYDY goes)

SynGates7X
03-23-2008, 08:12 PM
Yeah. I enjoyed the change, and it opened me up to more of there older stuff too. I wasn't a huge CoB fan when I first heard there old stuff, but as I listened to the newer stuff it warmed me up to the old stuff. And eventually, I started liking the older stuff more. It'll open up more people to your music.

I've had so many CoB dreams I'm tired of them lol.

I've seen Alexi in his little cross dressing nipple showing outfit, all of them where like that.

It was bad :(

I think progression and change are a little different, I think CoB progressed with Blooddrunk from AYDY...? but I think that they changed from HCDC to AYDY...?

Still love 'em though.

myspace and purevolume have ruined music. Now everyone with an extra paycheck or a spoiling daddy goes out, buys a guitar and starts a band. Look at the massive amount of generic metal bands out there, especially death metal and brutal death metal. It seems like every metalhead tries to reinvent the wheel and make it harder for those that took the time to shape the wheel.

Personally I disagree. There's millions of crap bands, yes, but also thousands of awesome ones, and the likes of MySpace make it easier to find bands you like, especially obscure ones who would otherwise never have crossed your path. I first discovered CoB because some random sent me She Is Beautiful over MSN.

And that has everything to do with this.

Again you fail. I said nothing about me. The point of the statement was that all the massive amounts of bands out there make it overall harder for bands to get a real notice. So your "if you dont like it, dont listen to it" idea is completely irrelevant.

Not true, Phil Demmel from Machine Head is getting one, I heard, and his is the one that's white, and a King V shape.

I agree some songs are pretty sweet. My favorites are Trashed Lost & Strungout and Living Dead Beat. But to me AYDY and Blooddrunk sound less melodic and more like they're chugging away on the same note, without ever changing key the whole time which gets dry and boring to me. The older guitar riffs were more epic-sounding and exciting to me. Perfect example to me is something like You're Better Off Dead. One of my favorite Bodom songs.

They didn't in the booklet, but Alexi and Janne have both in many interviews pointed out that nearly all of "Something Wild" was based on classical compositions because Alexi wanted to be like Malmsteen.
