seriously dude, ive been there, thought that. but when you listen you gotta think how complex even the rhythm guitar can get. also ive recently found out off a mate that Roope Latvala (Rhythm Guitar) does do his fair share in the spotlight, he even has a whole live solo on "Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Syndrome" that goes for 1:20 he plays his part dont you worry, although i do reckon Alexi is pretty much the key player in the band.

A large amount of people like consistency. I don't particularly love Yngwie, but appreciate his influence on various bands I like whether directly or indirectly through his influence on neo-classical metal.

Agreed. I don't enjoy listening to Yngwie, and think his arrogance and social personality is a complete joke. However, I can respect his influence and (original) innovation. I'm glad Alexi got over his Yngwie phase, and has started something of his own. I'm sure the next CD will be interesting, at least stylistically.
They began neoclassical, then hit an interesting midpoint at HCDR, then a very different style at AYDY. Now Blooddrunk seems to be going back to something closer to HCDR, as mentioned. It'll be intriguing to see where he takes it from there.

At Download they were damn good - I'll confess they weren't one of those gig experiences that has seared itself permanently into my memory, but nonetheless definitely a good show. And, frankly, I was mesmerised just watching Alexi's fingers - he's such an amazing, AMAZING player, that that was all I was focusing on for a lot of it.
Their set was wayy too short though. They were down to play 50 minutes (as if that wasn't short enough!) but I think they must have considerably undercut that.
They played In Your Face and Living Dead Beat off AYDY, and (the song) Blooddrunk, and Silent Night Bodom Night. Didn't know the others, my knowledge of old Bodom isn't amazing.
CodySG
06-22-2008, 08:21 AM
Honestly, Bodom's live shows are *from what I've seen and heard from others* usually not that amazing, unless they get a long set time to jack around and have fun.
I think one of the main reasons is that the singer, is also the lead guitarist. I mean, for metal at least, there is something about a singer thrashy around on stage and fueling the crowd that helps bring a show to another level.
Also, since he's the lead guitarist, there isn't another focal point to help keep your attention to the show.
Alexi is the singer, so you're already going to be paying attention to him most of the show.
Alexi is the lead guitarist, so when it's solo time, you get to watch Alexi spazz out on the 'board.
And since Alexi is the singer, he's the one ****ing with the audience, so when that happens, guess what!....you get to stare at Alexi!
God damn Alexi making the shows boring with his awesomesuperaresuperawesomeamazingsupercard.
...

Also, since he's the lead guitarist, there isn't another focal point to help keep your attention to the show.
You forget Janne. I'm not a keyboardist or anything, but watching Janne's hands fly was mesmerising. Shame he doesn't keytar it up though, he is a tad static.
God damn Alexi making the shows boring with his awesomesuperaresuperawesomeamazingsupercard.
...
I love him so much :(
You're right that he's definitely the focal point - but IMO he's a big enough presence to pull that off. Like KoRn - JD takes constant centre stage, but that's cool, because he's just that epic a frontman. Alexi doesn't have quite the same type of charisma, but he's still enough to keep you interested. Especially as he's one of the best musicians on the mainstream metal circuit. I can't emphasise enough just how stunning his guitar work is. He's so f*cking PRECISE.
His in-between song banter is a bit limited, mind. If you removed the words "f*ck", "motherf*cker" and "dude" from his vocabulary, he'd be practically dumb :p:.

Magero, you must have just had the bad luck of going to a mediocre show. From what I've heard, despite what Cody has said (not to say that he's wrong), I've really only ever heard great things about their live shows most of the time. And from my own experience, they've always been great.
And Alexi has gotten better, from what I've found, with his onstage banter most of the time. People who are native english speakers may not realize that a lot of his cursing (in the past) came from the fact that they were basically filler words for when he was trying to formulate his thoughts and figure out how to say something in english. Nowadays, since he's a lot better at speaking it, he doesn't do it as often. Comparatively, at least.
As far as the onstage presences go, Alexi kind of has all the spotlight, but the other guys do their part as much as they could, really. It is kind of annoying how all Janne seems to do anymore is drink, though. He used to do the keytar sometimes, in the past.
Like it was said, Alexi really is on his game, though. What might have affected a few shows lately though is that right around the end of Gigantour, and afterwards, he (and everyone else in the band) got really sick. Henkaa even mentioned it in his online blog right after that tour ended. I can imagine dealing with that while still traveling across the world, all the way to Finland, the UK, and Australia, and still playing all the time, can take its toll.
That might have affected your show, Mag. Possibly even download.

Delanoir: You make a good point. I read about them being really sick aswel, and Alexi REALLY looked it. You can read my review on my blog, and since it's extremely long, I won't take valuable space here (unless you people are too lazy to go read it yourself :p: )
The problem I have mainly is that everyone's been trying to pass it off as jetlag. Which to me, makes it a bigger problem, because if you've been touring for god knows how many years (10? 12?) you should understand the issues of coming to another time zone. Especially coming from basically the middle of Europe which is like...what...10 hours behind Australia? So basically, my main complaint is, if it WAS jetlag, they should have taken another day to just chill, relax and generally adapt. Instead of rushing down, and putting on a mediocre show.
Related to that, I read the tour dates for the first time on the back of my new shirt and it turns out they're going like this.
Brisbane - 20th
Melbourne - 22nd
Sydney - 24th
Auckland - 26th
Adelaide - 28th
Perth - 30th.
Now, for those of you that don't know Australian geography, it basically looks like this.
http://i32.tinypic.com/5otg1i.jpg
Start and Brisbane, go all the way down to Melbourne, past Sydney, then play in Melbourne, then go UP to Sydney then over to Auckland, then all the way back to Adelaide, then up to Perth, then go home.
Kinda confusing to be honest....
Delanoir
06-22-2008, 08:11 PM
Yeah, I'd personally attribute it to being really sick. I know that Alexi is currently dealing with a serious stomach virus, too.
Though, to be fair with the argument of the jetlag, they usually go by bus. Not plane. And not in such a short amount of time, what with Sauna Open Air, Metal Hammer Awards, Ireland, and then Australia. Not sure about the order, and there's definitely other stuff between those too, but yeah.
In either case, I can imagine it's the former more than the latter.

I think some people might have been under the misconception that I think Bodom's shows are boring. Not at all, I mean, they are like...Cody's all time favorite hero God-like amazingraresuperawesomesupercards.
I'm just saying that some people might feel that way because. . .
I mean, read back from when I posted that and see how many times Alexi is typed :haha
Example, I don't know how many of you like Lamb of God, but I love 'em, and while I would rather see Bodom than LoG, I think that LoG puts on a more energetic live show.
Not better per-say, just a different style.
In any case, I've seen Bodom twice and Lamb three times, once with them together. Both where AMAZING shows, and I hope to see both again soon.

Cody - LoG are an exceptionally good live act though, so it's harsh to use them as a benchmark. It's not like it's a bad thing to not be as good as LoG live, because most bands, including some great ones, aren't.
On the "sickness" thing, Alexi did look, like, chalk white at Download, but I just attributed this to him being all Finnish and stuff. It certainly didn't impair his playing :)

Have you actually even read the lyrics to that song?
Besides, I'm not saying he's never done it. How would I (or anyone here) even know, anyway? And it's not like every musician who ever made a drug reference in a song was an addict. :p:
All I'm saying is that I extremely doubt he does hard drugs, since he's been quoted as saying "I'm not down with that ****" even recently. And if nothing else, in this case, Henkaa said (as mentioned) in his online blog that they all got really sick right after Gigantour ended, and Alexi said in that interview (the one with Tuomas, which was this last month) that he contracted a bad stomach virus.
The typical drug stereotype bothers me, when applied to any rock/metal musician, at the drop of a hat. For all I know, he does, sure. A lot of musicians do. I know you probably meant no harm by it, but it does get annoying. People shouldn't throw things like that around, about anyone.

I (personally) completely disagree that Blooddrunk is lacking, or fails, in any way.
To be perfectly honest, the only fans I've found to not like it are those who still are in love with their old sound.
The reason why they've gotten less neoclassical (after Hatebreeder and FTR) is that Alexi started to find his own style, instead of mimicking his idols. Blooddrunk is almost nothing like AYDY. It's honestly most like HCDR, which is a great thing. That's the album that everyone in the band has said they feel most personifies their sound and style as a band.

If you only like the old stuff, cool, enjoy it! It IS amazing, but don't belittle the other stuff like it's utter crap. Still Bodom, just with a different twist.

That's very cool, I like it when musicians actually give a **** rather than just caring about the money and the fame. If I ever make it big, that's what I'd be like, and would actually like to hangout with fans whenever I got the chance, it would just be an opportunity to meet a lot of cool people interested in your music.

im at a dilemma. im in need of a new amp, and have narrowed my choices down to the Peavey XXX stack, and the 6505 stack. im not able to get out and play either of them because no one i know has one, and no music stores around here have any in stock.
i want a good searing metal growl sound, (intro of Angels Dont Kill) and something that'll give me Alexi sounding solo's. up until now i have been relying on you tube demo clips of these amps, and so far, i think the XXX has my attention most, regardless of the fact that it seems like 90% of UG is up the 6505's ass. I want it to be able to do CoB & Bullet For my Valentine very well. help?

Honestly, if you really want it, I'd just save up the money and go for an ESP Alexi.
I know the specs are the same besides the neck finish and letters on the headstock, but trust me you'll know the difference playing them side by side.
The ESP feels a LOT better, better wood, better construction, all around better guitar.

You're 16/17? Really? You sound like a whiny 12 year old.
What you need to do is grow up and get over the fact that Alexi has moved on to a different sound.
No one likes it? Speak for yourself. You'll find very few people share your opinion. HCDR is a favorite among most Bodom fans, and Blooddrunk is quickly approaching the same status, as they sound quite similar stylistically.
I love their older neoclassical style as much as anyone, but their newer sound is even better and more unique to me. And Alexi (and the rest of Bodom) never said they hated it. Do you realize how different of a perspective a band has on their own music, let alone their beginnings album(s)? I can imagine any good musician would have a critical view of their musical debut, after growing and evolving after over a decade.
After meeting and hanging out with Alexi, and the rest of the band, I can assure you that it's idiot kids like you that only make them (and us) laugh, and say good riddance. If you can't accept them as they are and in what they choose to do, it's honestly your loss.

Roope drunk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qfl3XkeBe0)
The bit with Roope in is from about 0:30 - 1:40. Listen carefully to him because at times it's almost indistinguishable but if you can understand what he's saying it's hilarious.

According to my tickets, I have numbers 5-8 for the Oct. 10th show in Mass. Pretty pumped, though last time I saw Bodom, the acoustics were terrible in the Palladium and it was hard to make out the leads.
